THINGS THAT MATTER

‘Tis the Season, for the memories, for the things that matter . . . and for the MUSICA! Happy Monday! Rabbit-Rabbit!Being my camera-loving Mother’s daughter (except and because of the fact that that we no longer have to buy film), I have over a hundred-thousand photographs in my iPhotos … so many they don’t fit on my computer, I have to keep them in a separate hard drive with a ton of memory. They’re filed by category, under headings like “Holly Oak,” “Family,” “Quilts and Sewing,” “Birds,” “England,” “Tablesettings,” “Children’s Letters,” “Tea and Dishes,” “Heroes,” “Decorating,” and “Tiny Vases” ~ 135 categories! There are innumerable subheadings too, like “Diet,” “Time,” “Courage,” “Happy,” and “Dreams.” They’re also filed by color. So if I type “GREEN,” into my Photo Search, over 100 photos come up, all green, from green fireworks to my green Girl Scout badges. The color headings include lots of photos you haven’t seen because they haven’t necessarily fit into a story. I can’t wait to show you BROWN! Brown sounds so boring but it’s NOT! But today, in honor of the season, we are going to do RED! It’s my biggest color category, almost 300 photos, and as you might guess, over half of them have to do with this wonderful time of year!

This is one of the pictures Joe took for the back cover of my Christmas Book.

“I love bright red drinks, don’t you? They taste twice as good as any other color.”
Lucy Maud Montgomery

You can see, the silverware and flowers aren’t even on the table yet, but I didn’t care, I had to light the candles to see what they were going to look like on that tablecloth which is actually a bedspread! Just thinking about that bedspread this morning . . . where is it? Need it!

Right now our kitchen table is a gathering of little piles with addresses and cards . . . this to there, and this to there . . . spreading cheer where we can.

As you can tell, I love this radish. As a lover and collector of whimsy, here was never a more perfect photo to add to my RED pile than this one.

Food is Love

It’s not a very big book, and it’s almost full … not every dinner party gets in, but every so often, I write down the whole thing, what we ate, who was there, what we were thinking . . . For the memories.

See what I mean? RED is everywhere in the Christmas season!

Even the tiny bits of red stand out in these guest-room towels!

And this old guy. Years ago we had a person making dishtowels for us, but he retired and so that was that, but not before I got this one for my collection! Joe modeled for me, that’s how I drew Santa… “His eyes ~ how they twinkled! His dimples ~ How Merry!”

‘Cause, when I can’t make them, I draw them . . .

Making the cupboards shine . . .

with sparkly glasses . . .

Symphony in RED, my Mom, Me, and my Dad. I’m mashing, she’s thickening the gravy, he’s got the salt. The perfect number of cooks in the kitchen, if you ask me.❤️

Joe’s handiwork . . .

Reflections . . . I don’t know what it is about them, but they feel like magic . . .

Roses.

Heaven and nature sings . . . “…and so many orchards circled the village that on some crisp October afternoons the whole world smelled like pie.”
Alice Hoffman

Need I say more?

Sometimes the RED is very subtle . . .

And sometimes you really don’t have to look for it!

I am not allowed to throw out a poinsettia. I have to hide them to throw them away, because Joe will even take them out of the trash if he sees them. So, see the little one on the left? That came limping in from the previous year.

Just good RED.

And embroidered RED for the bread basket.

And my boy with his Christmas feather!

Through the pantry window to the barn after fresh snowfall, I should play the song, Isn’t it Romantic . . .🎶

Cheese Blintzes and Cherry Sauce!

5. You make magic, like Santa Claus . . .

Spiced Pecans and best old stove, heartbeat of the house.❤️ MAS MUSICA!

My other boy at work in his village . . .

A heart-shaped strawberry. Nature does make the most whimsical REDS.

In my next life, I will paint my house cranberry red just like this! I think I should even aim for this very one!

“But Jo, I think I will be homesick for you, even in heaven.” ❤️ Beth, Little Women

This slipped into the RED category because of his cheeks!

The pear is actually a candle. I think this and the book was a Giveaway from a few years back.

A Valentine from Joe. I do wear it sometimes, like on Christmas morning, when I want to be festive, even though it goes up to my knuckle! Do not think it is a real, what? Cranberry diamond? Because it’s not. It’s just sweet as pie.

Making memories…

I mean, did someone say RED? Remember when we went to Vermont for a sleigh ride?

Then there’s this . . . it snowed on our first Thanksgiving in this house, which was exactly thirty years ago this last Thanksgiving! ❤️

Just a picture I never get to use, but I love it. That dishtowel is hanging on my stove right now!

There’s that cranberry cake! Tea party, cozy fire, sugared fruit, vintage tablecloth . . .

One of the other Photo-Categories I love is “GLASS” ~ 132 photos of sparkling pitchers, lamps, candlesticks, sugar bowls, and etched champagne glasses. These Star Bobeche are perfect additions. AND they are our Giveaway for this very RED Letter Day.

For the Lucky Winner, a pair of Star Bobeche will soon be flying your way, from me to you, just in time for decorating! Vanna was downstairs earlier, she climbed into the barrel filled with all of your names in her flannel Santa Jammies and kitty-cat slippers. She stirred the little slips carefully, and for a very long time, but finally, she did come up with one name (one, is not enough, I wish I could do fishes and loaves and have them for EVERYONE💞)… BUT here is our grand and I do mean grand WINNER:

G  I  N  E  T  T  E     W  H  E  E  L  E  R

Congratulations Ginette … I’ll be emailing you, please write me back with your address and your Bobeche will be on the way!❤️

I’ve been listening to and watching Little Women while writing this post . . . tears and joy and the spirit of Christmas.“Jo, your hair will grow back and it will be as lovely as ever, but you will never be more beautiful than you are right now.”  ❤️ MarmeeLove you, dear ones . . . Deep Breath, do what it takes to make your hours turn into Red Letter Days.❤️ A little cup of tea here, a little pet-the-pet there, a little baked potato with lots of butter here. 💋 Use your powers for good . . . XOXO

  12. Joyce Heffner says:

    Dear Susan:

You have done it again! Sprinkled your magic fairy dust on us all, like all the red in your home and pictures. Only a true artist sorts pictures by color! I mean this as a sincere compliment! My child is my artist and it would be something she would do.
I hope you know how much joy and peace you bring to us (your kindred girlfriends)
Thanks for being so generous with your life and charm. Enjoy the season with the ones that bring joy to your soul.

  21. Linda says:

Love this post, as red is my favorite color.

  22. Mary says:

I have never considered myself a “red” person. I decorate with it at Christmas but that’s it. But something has happened to me this year … I’m bonkers over all the red, and I can’t get enough! This, of course, was a veritable feast, and I thank you for it. ❣️I WILL figure out how to encorporate it into my life after the new year. Thanks for the inspiration. And have a very Merry Christmas 🎁

    Mary (Forest Grove, OR)

  23. Judith says:

Red is just the color for winter landscapes (inside and out). Wonderful photos and post! I have a technical question for you…do you have special software that finds the color and groups them for you? Or are you having to create those folders yourself? Either way, you are SO organized! Happy holidays to you and yours ♥
    From Seattle with love ~
    Judith

  24. Sharon Maier says:

Hey Susan…The red thing threw me back to my childhood since my Mom insisted on red in her kitchen…she even had a red telephone (dial of course!). I think she was one of a kind in that no one at that time was “doing” red — it was all about pastels — in the early 50’s. Anyway, red was her accent color and it brightened everyone’s spirits — the house was built in 1910, and I thought it fit right in. Sharon in Houston

    • sbranch says:

She was ahead of her time! So little decorating going on back then. When you watch old Ozzie and Harriet or I Love Lucy, they have NOTHING on their counters! Now we have to fight for space to cut up an apple! 😁

      • Jill says:

Those were fake kitchens! My Great Aunt Jane came from the same time period and her counters were PACKED.

  25. Carol Ybarrondo says:

Always LOVE all your pictures, the red is at it’s best at Christmas time. Thanks for sharing, and MERRY CHRISTMAS from Lemon Grove, CA!

  26. Delores Yearous Berg says:

I also love the color red, so thanks for sharing. In our inner courtyard (in Stockholm Sweden) we gaze across to a beautiful red building which always brings joy to my heart. Stockholm has lots of red buildings, you should visit! Take the train from England on your next visit😎Also, our country house from the 1690’s is red, as are most old wooden houses throughout Sweden. Come by for tea and a baked goodie anytime. Or fika as it is called in Sweden.
Wishing you a God Jul (Merry Christmas)

  27. Pat Wyrick says:

What a cheerful post..thank you Susan. Loved all the red…so festive. Merry Christmas to you & yours 🍅🍎🍭🍉🍒🍓🍁🌷

  28. Kathleen Williams says:

    Hi Susan,
A couple of years ago I bought almost that same “Birthday Girl” pin…I love it. Haven’t been able to find another one. And it just so happens that it’s my favorite time of year and my favorite color….well, RED of course. So loved this posting. Thank you for taking the time to write it and send it our way.

Feeling a bit under the weather, then your lovely post arrived. What a cheerful bright spot of comfort. Dearly love 💕 your charming photos in red. Thank you for the beautiful pick me up! Feeling better already. Love is the best medicine.

  30. “Red is the ultimate cure for sadness.” ~Bill Blass
Love all of your reds here this morning. I have been feeling x-tra blue because of having lost my mom earlier this year. It has been a year of sad firsts. Mother’s Day was hard, so were the Birthdays, and now Christmas. It will be the first time in 64 years I won’t hear my mother’s voice, or probably 65 as I am sure I was well aware of it before I was even born. Your reds have cheered me up immensely! Thank you for that! You are such a treasure. We love so many of the same things, redwork embroidery, teatowels, snowflakes that fall on red cheeks, noses and eyelashes, Christmas! Happy Christmas to you and Joe and to all of our Kindred Spirit girlfriends! May this Christmas be more than just a season, but a way of life! HO HO HO
PS – Congratulations to your very lucky winner! I am sure her Christmas just got a bazillion bits better!

  31. I am living in the Cotswolds for six months and often think of you and your English adventures while here. This is a dream come true for me and I have started a blog to capture our incredible experience and thought you and your readers might enjoy it. 32. Karen Howell Burton says:

❤️RED! ❤️The color of energy and love…of which you have both! ❤️ Thank you once again for Warming our hearts and homes. I have a gi-normous 1800’s Red cupboard in my living room which is one of my prized possessions. I paid all of $10.00 for it but to me it’s priceless! It holds so many treasures of loved ones. Wishing you, Joe, Jack and all our kindred spirits a wonderful holiday season and a ❄️☃️MERRY CHRISTMAS☃️❄️ ❤️🌲❤️🌲❤️🌲❤️🌲❤️🌲

Don’t you love it! Never about money! Scavaging, that’s what it’s about! Merry Christmas, dear Karen! 😆❌⭕️

  33. Chris H says:

I’m not a big fan of red although that might be a whole lot different if I could pair it with snow!! Every now and then though I break out and use a touch of it and I can really appreciate it in other people’s homes. This is a beautiful post; full of joy and sparkle. Chris from Brisbane Australia

  34. Barb Kuzdzal says:

Susan, I got up in the middle of the night not able to sleep. I had saved reading your post till I had a few minutes to enjoy it and remembered to bring it up. It warmed my heart, one of your best post ever for sure. Nothing like the color red. Your collection of red photos were a treat and brought back memories. Thanks to you I was able to pitter patter back to bed and sleep snug as a bug with a happy heart.

  35. mary spring says:

… a red letter day for sure !!…good morning and thank you for another amazing post full of inspiration and color !!!… congratulations to Ginette !…and enjoy the snow, dear Susan !!!

  36. Samantha (Nova Scotia) says:

Good morning everyone! I am planning my own wedding for Dec 21st this year (main colors are cranberry and blue) and all this rushing around I feel as though my head was on backwards. Thank you Susan for slowing me down to LOOK. Sitting here with my coffee I thought, “well you will look at this more then once today girl.” I am in a need of a red letter day.

My favorite color is red and I enjoyed this post so much. It was pretty much like candy. I really love the older picture of you and Joe. What a keepsake. xo And now….i need cranberry cake and tea! haha.

As I have said before about my Little Women Dolls…i am in love. I read that story at this time of year and it just reminds us what is important.

We of course all hope to read another post before Christmas, but in the meantime…in the hustle and bustle…Merry Christmas to you and Joe!!

  37. Carolyn Collins-Hunt says:

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! 🎶🎶🎶 AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR 🎉🎉🎉 💕💕💕💕

  38. Simone says:

    Dear Susan,
Thank you for another inspiring blog. I had to chuckle when you mentioned that Joe does not allow a poinsettia to be thrown out. I’ve always thrown mine out in springtime, because it was still red and I wanted Spring time colors by then. But in 2019 I decided to keep my poinsettia. It’s very green, but no sign of red. Hope I see red before Christmas.

  39. Sue from Knoxville TN says:

I LOVED this post, Susan – it started my day out just right! Such excitement, it rubbed off on me! I have always been a “holiday girl”, and Christmas is a doozy. I recently found a cute pitcher from one of your collections – I snapped it up for sure, and just in time for the holiday! Added to MY collection now.
Thanks for the reminders of all good things and what matters most.

  40. Ruthie Miller says:

Loving your Red Letter Day. As always, you make everything-even simple things-so lovely and appealing. I appreciate your positive attitude, our dear Pollyanna (best way to be). Red makes me happy too-in clothing, decorating, dishes and looking out my window to see a beautiful cardinal never looses it’s thrill.
Thank you again for another charmer in sharing your life.
P.S. Gosh, I love those bobeches! The bedspread tablecloth too and how you make magic with candle light. I love that you use little pitchers and creamers to put them in too. Hope you have a happy snowfall.

  41. Laura B in NC says:

Years of reading your blog have encouraged me to continually look for Beautiful, choose Positive, experience Adventure, make Lovely, be Optimistic. Thank you so very much.

  42. Julie says:

I enjoyed reading this in my RED pj’s and my kitty on my lap. Thank you!

  43. Beth from Iowa says:

Love, love, love😘, the red! I received a pair of bohemian glass candlesticks for my 60th birthday from my sisters – they match the glass vase we inherited from our great grandmother. There’s snow here in Iowa and also a “rare” tornado on 11/30 – go figure! Hope the weather is white and lovely there. We recently rediscovered puzzles – good way to put all of the bad stuff out of your mind! There’s just no room for anything else when you’re on the hunt for that last edge piece! Take care🎄☃️🥳.

  44. Maria Mitchell says:

Beautiful 💕💕💕💕 thank you so much Susan🙏and please can you share your cranberry cake recipe ❄💗

    Maria

  45. Deb in Wales says:

    Red is such a happy colour, the happiest colour I know. I love the photo of you, Joe and The Snowman {Sounds like a title for a book, Susan, Joe and The Snowman}

Going digital has resulted in me taking over 180,000 photos since 2006. That’s crazy, and haven’t we all become so precious over them, storing them over and over, with back ups of our back ups, but somehow nobody very much seems to print them out now. That’s the digital revolution I guess.

We had our annual Festival of Christmas Trees in the village last weekend. Lots of festive cheer, and lots of trees showing so much creativity and imagination. It’s been over 15 years since I brought the idea to our village, and although I am no longer involved in organising it goes from strength to strength. This year we had a new category, a Decorated Wreath and I have put all the photos of both trees and wreaths on my blog.

  46. Mary says:

Beautiful! Beautiful! You just gave us an abundance of contagious enthusiasm for holiday preparations and party enjoyments! I only regret my ride on the minimalism bandwagon when I read your blog. But I live in a condo so I have to keep it simple. 😍. Thank you. 🙏🏻

  49. Beautiful Red post! So many ideas. I like to watch Christmas movies with a cup of tea or hot chocolate.

  50. Sally Jenks Roth says:

I love the Bath Old Books, the bobeches, the photo of your first snowy Thanksgiving with Joe, rosy cheeks, the wreath on the barn and much, much more! A glorious post, thanks again Susan for making me smile and feel the warmth of the RED (and very white in Vermont) season! I love it all, the quotes, recipes, ideas, artwork and YOU! Blessings, I know you are enjoying the magic island at this time of year…

  51. Bev Basye says:

Love your “red” blog. I read it while looking at my just decorated Christmas tree with pops of red all over it. This past Sunday was a “red letter day” watching Christmas movies on TCM, “Little Women, “Holiday Affair”, The Shop Around The Corner”, “A Christmas Carol” and topped off with “The Bishop’s Wife”. Thank you for starting my day out right with your lovely photos!

  52. Care Woodard says:

Oh Susan ! Thank you for such a lovely post to read and savor on a snow day in Glastonbury, CT. I adore red! Our cottage is red and I had to paint our kitchen red; it is SO cozy in Winter. I read somewhere that the color red makes one hungry and so everyone thinks I am a wonderful cook:) My favorite mug right now is your red champagne hearts; in the summer I’m drawn to your England’s green and pleasant land mug. I feel so Happy for Ginette winning all that sparkle. I’m sure we all shined this Thanksgiving and green Friday. I am enjoying being an elf every day! Bless you for reminding us all and creating such a beautiful space for like minded souls.

  53. Patty says:

This post is a red letter post! Thank you, Susan!

  54. Melissa Myers says:

    Dear Susan,

This post was exactly what I needed to motivate me to finish my decorating for Christmas/Winter. The little bits of red here and there sure do brighten up a grey, chilly day. Merry Christmas to you, Joe and Jack. <3

    Warm Wishes,
    Melissa

  55. Gina Mahoney says:

Hello Susan, I loved this post! Red is my very favorite color, I have a red wall in my kitchen for about 10 years now and I never tire of it. Green is my second favorite color and have a lot of that in my home as well, always a subliminal Christmas feeling! Your Thanksgiving picture from 30 years ago looks like something straight out of a Hallmark movie, just loved it! Merry Christmas to all!

  56. Patti H says:

    Red!
My granddaughter and I made your recipe for cranberries ( just cranberries and sugar in the oven). She was absolutely amazed at the color and the smell- she asked, “ is this what red smells like?” We ate them with pork chops, with Bisquick chicken and dumplings, and her favorite…pancakes.

  57. Sherri says:

I enjoyed looking at all your red memories! My kids always tease me about the quantity and subjects of my photos, but I LOVE capturing the moment. You have inspired me to get a separate drive for my photo collection! Merry Christmas!

  58. Deb K says:

My favorite color is red, must be the dark hair, fair skin combo. Still remember this gorgeous red wool coat I had years ago. One of my very favorites! And the red wool dress I wore the very first time I met my husband. Loved that and him of course. My very first kitty was a tuxedo girl and she looked so beautiful with her red colors and her red Christmas ribbon. Miss her still.

So I very much loved the red theme today and as I write this I just realized what I have on….my red corduroy shirt jacket, how appropriate!

  59. Wendy Louise says:

Dear Susan, Oh how delightful to read this beautiful Red post! It’s snowing right now in our neck of the woods here in Massachusetts. We have fifteen inches of snow and counting and looking out our bay window our beautiful American flag with its red stripes look fantastic in all the snow. Merry Christmas Susan to you and all of yours you hold so dearly. Thank you for You! Love, Wendy- Louise

  60. Kay from snowy Maine! says:

I love all of your newsletters so much! Because of you, I took a cross country train trip to visit my son…twice! Love all of the red in this edition, especially the cross stitched teacups.

  61. Danella on the Canadian west coast says:

Got up early…couldn’t sleep. Perfect message to read with the fireplace on and Christmas tree lights glowing. Great way to start my day. Thank you! And MERRY CHRISTMAS to all of you.💖

  62. charlotte m. says:

Thank you for all the red and holiday cheer. Since we moved to San Diego almost 3 years ago, I miss the winters of the east. I even miss the snow. I love seeing your pictures of the snow, the yard, the house so cozy with fire in the hearth and tea on the table. I love cozy things especially at this time of year. Happy holiday season to you and Joe and Jack.

  63. Laura says:

I’ve been going back in time and re-reading all of your December blog posts which start in 2010!! Yay for the archives! Just wanted to thank you for sharing yourself with all of us. You bring happiness and peace to my day. Very thankful for you and happy holidays!!🤶🏻🎅🏻🎄🎄🤶🏻🎅🏻 Sending love from Michigan❤️💚❤️💚

  64. Bridget B. in Tn. says:

Susan, your post was a wonderful surprise!! I am now inspired to find all things red for Chrismas. Thanks for the beautiful snow pictures on twitter this morning. I loved them. Thanks for sharing. We had a slight dusting yesterday morning , very early. I could see snow on the nearby mountain tops most of the day. I absolutely love to watch it snow. I’ll just have to be patient until we have a more substantial one. Have a wonderful day and enjoy yours!!!! Bridget

  65. Mary Jane says:

What a pretty, happy blog. The thing you do better than anyone, is remind us that it really is the little things in life that make it so happy. We don’t need a million dollars to “be happy”. I think that is a very important message, especially these days. People think everything revolves around how much money you have. That is not true! You point that out in so many beautiful ways. Remind us all how much we have to be grateful for. Thank you so much for that!

Christmas hugs and love to you,
    Mary Jane

  66. Susan P. says:

    Susan,

Yes, RED is my color and Hunter green goes with it, When we bought our home here in West Covina, CA it had red carpet, it was not selling because of the carpet. BUT along came us and Magic, it was ours. The outside is White and Hunter Green and inside is red and hunter green accents through out the house!!!
I finally got my front “RED” door the screen doors are hunter green.
I know this all comes from my mother..she had a red and white Kitchen the ceiling was painted “Chinese Red” that was the name of the paint and my dad painted it for her. She even had wooden chairs with Red Seat covers…I have the last one, that survived 7 children/ Our little dinning room was Hunter Green HHHHMMMMM yes, I know it was the love and influence of my Mother.
Once again thank you for a great and wonderful post. Love, Susan P.

Hi Susan, Ahhh red – one of my favorite colors! In fact, our new home in Maine is going to be……. barn red! We woke to a little snow here on Long Island this morning. It made everything look so festive. Thank you for sharing all of the beautiful pictures. 30 years – where does the time go? We’re married 30 years this year! This weekend we put up the tree (we usually put up three but with getting ready to put our house on the market we’re going a little bit minimal this year). Christmas shopping is done and it’s time to get the doggie pictures and cards out. Have a beautiful day and best regards to Joe. Love, Karen 🙂

    Hi Susan,
I replied yesterday but don’t see it here. All replies from about 12:47pm to about 5pm on December 2nd are missing. Mine was about 3:57pm. I’m sure I was not the only reply to your wonderful post! Is it a tech snafu? Did an elf get into the computer, mine or yours? Just wondering….:)
    Thanks for all you do,
    VirginiaB

They ARE, how upsetting is that? I didn’t even realize. Must have been a big glitch here. I don’t even know who to ask! Thank you for telling me, I really do not like my blog to drive people crazy! 😆

Happy 30th Thanksgiving anniversary! Thanks for giving so much joy and color to your fans! I love the fireside tea party pic best! Sunday was 15 logs and two hours warmth while I was letter writing. 🔥 Now that you have snow – snuggle down!

I posted last night but don’t think it went through so here it goes again!
I LOVE this post. All the red and white just perked up my spirits and the pictures and memories you shared took me back to a younger time. I’m 65 and at times those years seem more real than the present although I have much to be thankful for.
I pray that you, Joe and kitty have a blessed Christmas with family and friends!

  75. Beth Barnat says:

Thanks again, Susan, for your bright, cheery newsletter this morning.
I just received my new 2020 Susan Branch wall calendars from Amazon and I’m looking forward to hanging them. I have two for home (one for the wall over my bedroom desk, one for the kitchen wall, and a mini for over my desk at work.)

    Merry Christmas from Warsaw, Indiana!

Invigorating red…so pretty, especially against a ‘snowy’ white backdrop. A lovely post, indeed.
A very Happy Christmas to you, Susan, and to Joe and Jack too!

  77. Helen says:

Love, love, love red. Have some red in every room in my house. So cheerful. In my TV room I have a sofa and loveseat that is a red background with scattered flowers — looks very English and cheers me to look at it. Red dish towels and chair pads in the kitchen, well……you get the picture. I love getting your blogs and Willards.

  78. Kate says:

Merry Christmas Susan and Joe,and Jack too, Loved this. I am totally inspired. We need some extra holiday sparkle this year for sure and that gave us all a huge boost.. I love your categorizing your photos by color. I take millions of photos too. Can’t not snap when I see something wonderful. So grateful for digital photos! I have so many albums from back in the days of film when you waited to see if a photo even turned out. They fill almost an entire closet! Back then we had to keep even the ones that people look totally goofy because that’s all that came back from developing..😉🤪
Thank you Susan for getting us started on this holiday season.
    Love,
    Beverlee

    • sbranch says:

I have a hutch full of albums ~ and probably if you counted all the photos in them they’d only be a tiny percentage of the ones I have on the computer!!! They gave us a license to go insane when they invented digital cameras!

  81. I “red” your blog with JOY!!!! Wishing you and yours all the blessings of the holiday season! Hugs…Bev

  82. Aneta says:

  85. Martha says:

RED!!! That was a lot of fun to peruse your photo collection of the color red! Red has always reminded me of an “explanation point” ❗️Just thinking…You mentioned loving a red house. Have you considered painting your barn red, or the barn doors red, or putting a red metal roof on top?? ❤️❤️❤️

  86. Ann says:

Red is my favorite color all year round but especially at Christmas. Thanks for these lovely images and words. Happy Holidays to you.

  87. Valerie Jones says:

    Dear Susan,
You never cease to amaze and inspire me. We are having a wonderful snow day here in Maine. Outside the trees are frosted, the chickadees are flitting from the bush to the feeder, and the gentle falling snow brings a sense of peace. Inside the fire is roaring, and I am taking some time to as you put it “shop the house!” It is amazing what you can find and how it takes on a different look when you use it for a different purpose. I love days like these when puttering, homemaking, baking, decorating, etc. can take center stage. Thank you Susan for your wonderful posts. I look forward to every one!
    Valerie

  88. Linda Lepage says:

Susan!!!!! LOVE this time of year. I too, decorate my kitchen with red and white. I can remember when I got your Christmas book! I use it each Christmas. I adore the candle light in glass things, creamers, sugar bowls. I also like to use my baked on enamel white and red containers. My problem is, that I have so many, I switch them out and change things around all season, hahahaa
Thank you for your wonderful post.
Hugs to you and Joe and Jack, too!
    MERRY CHRISTMAS!

  89. Susan says:

Looking out my window, the world looks like a snow globe, and I’m cozily reading this delightful holiday newsletter. Haven’t had much Christmas spirit, but all that red got me going. When I finish this, I’m heading to the attic for decorations!
    Thanks!
    Susan

    Dear Susan,

Thank you so much for the smiles and the warm, fuzzy Christmas feelings! And I have those warm feelings whenever I look at the Christmas House Paper Decoration that I ordered from your store. It is so adorable that I ordered a couple to put in Christmas cards of some friends. Merry Christmas to you Susan and to Joe and Jack too!

I, too love Red! In my first home I asked my husband to paint the kitchen ceiling red and have scallops all around. Surprise – I had circles because of the reflection! Visitors – female loved it, males – mostly scratched their head!
