BLIZZARD WATCH

Hi Girls!  It’s 24°, sun’s just up, blue sky, no wind, but we are on a Blizzard Watch!  They are talking 1-2 feet of snow for Martha’s Vineyard, probable power outages!  “Crippling Blizzard!”  Yikes! But we have MUSICA

I just love this photograph.  I took it at the Emma Bridgewater factory, in a very old building in Stoke-on-Trent in England.   The factory was so organized (everyone knows where they keep the rubber bands) and no matter where you looked, tea was at hand.  It’s an interesting juxtaposition between the hearts and the walls, a little romance can brighten up the darkest spot!

My theme today is Romance.  Has to be, because yesterday Joe and I celebrated our twenty-sixth anniversary!  This is one of the wonderful postcards in his collection.

Last year at this time we celebrated our 25th by having an anniversary breakfast and inviting all of our friends.

I used champagne corks for place cards, old books, birds and flowers for the table, my Johnson Brothers Rose Chintz dishes, and a little bowl of chocolate kisses, because who doesn’t love a little kiss at breakfast time.  ♥ ♥ ♥

We cooked up a storm for this party and had a wonderful time doing it.

♥   ♥   ♥

Cooking is my idea of deep, dark, delicious romance.  Romance is all about the five senses and cooking appeals to them all, smells good, tastes good, looks, feels, sounds so good, and cooking includes the 6th sense, the sense of imagination and creativity.  These books are my idea of romance novels.  I love to read them and be inspired; sometimes Joe and I read recipes out loud to each other, like storybooks.  He will say something like, “Listen to this, they’re putting cinnamon in a taco!”

But you can see why — if this isn’t pure romance, I don’t know what it is.  And luckily, Joe thinks so too.  He is my victim, and I am his.

Making banana fritters is almost as romantic as eating them, especially when playing a little old-fashioned music.

Mmm, saw this picture of cheesecake as I was scrolling by, just had to put it in. Looks very romantic to me!

And then there’s tea . . . and all the romance around this sweet tradition.  I designed this tea strainer and Lenox made it …. of course they’re long gone but I still have mine, so I thought I’d show you how cute it was.

Maybe you need some chocolate-chip and orange heart-shaped tea biscuits to go with your tea?  So quick and easy, and such a nice way to say I love you. ♥  (I think we still have heart-shaped iron pans in our web store in case you need one.)

More romance, this lovely little embroidered beaded heart, was sent to me by my English Girlfriend Siobhan.  It hangs in the kitchen.  Love!

Someone wrote the other day, wanting to show my favorite piece of transferware.  That’s a difficult choice, but I think this bowl is it!  Not very big, but what a cutie.  “WOOD” is deeply stamped on the bottom; a very fancy pair of numbers are painted next to the stamp, “24.”  That’s all I know about this little pink bowl.  I always wish these things had tiny little chip video cameras on them so we could pop it into our computers and see everywhere they’ve been during their lives.  I’d love to see the women who bought these bowls, the very first tables they sat on, the cupboards they were kept in, who washed them, and what was in them.  Look how lucky the people of the future will be, we have videos of EVERYTHING.  But then again, maybe what makes it all so romantic is that it’s gone forever, and we just have to imagine.

So, yes, soon, it’s going to look like this around here! Even more — the weather man just said our storm will be HISTORIC!  How exciting!

How romantic!

‘Specially when I look out my studio window and see my guy taking care of things.

Our anniversary was very low key this year, no parties, just us, the kitties, the fire.  We’re planning to celebrate everything after the book is turned in and we return to our regularly scheduled life.  It won’t be long now!

I ‘m painting like crazy (I keep bits of scrap paper next to the page I’m working on, where I test the paint on my brush, or do quick squiggles — that’s what this is — don’t worry, it’s not going into the book!).  Joe is scanning the finished pages and sending them in as they are finished.  So yesterday, our anniversary was just a regular day, no special plans, we wished each other happy anniversary and that was about it, a special day, like any other.  Then he went to the supermarket for groceries and came home with roses.  He surprised me with them, I didn’t expect it, so I was very touched.  He is such a doll.  It was kind of like that heart cup in the picture at Emma Bridgewater’s — just the littlest bit of romance brightens everything.  He also hid a coconut cake in the back freezer.  So after dinner, which was ribs and sweet potatoes, he pulled out his surprise cake.

He is taking good care of me as I finish writing our book, and paint titles for the front cover.  It was the perfect Anniversary.  I could not have asked for any more.  ♥   ♥   ♥   So back to work I go.  I wrote a new WILLARD yesterday!  It’s being prepared now so it can be emailed to everyone.  I love writing Willards . . .  it’s hard to believe this is my first one for 2013!  The Valentine Willard will start going out February 12.  You should know, it has little surprises in it just for you. Because Valentine’s Day was invented for women! We need those little surprises!  Like roses.♥

I laid out the back cover of the book … then I took it to Joe to ask him what he thinks.  We feel so lucky because last year we had a celebration to last a lifetime and since then, we’ve been reliving it almost every day!

Twenty-six years together . . .

Isn’t it romantic?

Historical snow storm!! How exciting!! Please post pictures and lots of em.
Wish all men could learn that the very smallest of gestures mean the most.

Enjoy the snow and all the coziness that comes with it.

I know, but it’s their nature to conquer nations and build the empire state building … if they only knew.

  2. Treese says:

Clever girl! That roaring fireplace was fantastic. Congratulations on your 26 wonderful years together. You both seem quite happy and respect each other’s wants and needs. Yes, my east coast friends (New York and Massachusetts) are preparing for a big one. Some time I think the whole world has tipped upside down. Here in Colorado we should be -20 and under snow. It is in the mid-50’s and I have a T-shirt on while I have been feeding my critters. I am usually in triple layered flannel clothing.

Unfortunately, with the warm whether and no snow or rain the Arkansas River I live on is down to a trickle and with no hay to be found most rancher’s are selling off their herds. I have already sold 2/3’s of my cattle as hay has become scarce. Looks like we are headed for another year of drought. It is hard on us rancher’s. I was sad to sell my cattle, many cows I have had since they were born. They all have such personalities. It was hard to see the calves go as they will go straight to the feed lot and never really be able to run through a pasture and have fun. I kept some cows that I bottled fed and they are like big dogs not cattle. They follow me everywhere. I can’t bear to part with them as they are pets.

Good Luck and I hope you and Joe make it through the storm without too much damage.
    Treese/Colorado Cowgirl

    • sbranch says:

Oh Treese, that is so sad. I’m happy you can keep the ones you love the best … I’m praying for at least some rain for you!

      • sondra fox says:

Treese, I feel so bad for you, but want you to know I admire your strength. I’ve always wanted to live on a farm, but I know, realistically, that I couldn’t be brave enough to do all the things farmers do on a daily basis, such as raising animals & then having to sell them, or, knowing that the animals life will end by my own actions.

  3. Theresa says:

I love this post… (really I love them all!) happy wonderful romantic year to the two of you, stay warm and safe… Sending thoughts of a romantic life! Blessings from the Texas pastures!

  4. Lucia Donahower says:

Hello Susan, just started reading your blog in January of this year. I love it! I love everything you write about and your art! I was introduced to you, by buying your calendar in 1999!! And have had your calendar since then. I now own: Heart of The Home, Summer, and Christmas joy! I love looking, reading and cooking from them.
Your love of beauty is contagious! Please keep it up!
One question, I would like to read your older posts. When did you start your blog? I would very much like to go back and start from the beginning.
Thank you so much for the joy and inspiration you bring into my home!

    • sbranch says:

I started the blog around July in 2011 … it’s a year and a half old right now, so you really don’t have all that far back to go. Nice to meet you Lucia! Thank you for being here!

  5. Patricia says:

How blessed you both are to have so much happiness from each other – a very Happy Anniversary to you both – God Bless you both , and your wonderful relationship is touching to see and read about……

  6. Verla says:

Your comments about the roses and the cake reminded me so much of the surprises my husband use to do for me. One year he made me a special tea for dinner, which used very ordinary things, but he set the table with my special Old Roses Tea things and it took my breath away. Today, I’m missing him very much. He went to heaven right before Christmas, and life is so empty without him. Thank you though for jogging that special memory. Verla

  7. Lynn B says:

Blessings on your 26th anniversary! Snowfall, roaring fire, someone you love, two furry lovers .. it is indeed romantic! Have a wonderful blizzard weekend!

  8. Jonnie Nottingham says:

Happy Anniversary, Joe and Susan. You have such a lovely home – so warm and cozy. Tea, warm biscuits and entertaining kitties make it very cozy. Love, Jonnie

  9. Linda Petersen says:

Happy Anniversary to a very special Mr. & Mrs. !! Wonderful post as always:0).
Thank you for the pics too~~~you tie everything together so sweetly. Keeping you, Joe, & the “kids” in my prayers for your safety & everyone there as well. Can’t wait for my Willard & the book! The back cover looks really good.
XOXO, Linda in Chino Valley, AZ.

  10. Janet [in Rochester] says:

Love the photo of the two of you – that is just beautiful. Are you married at that point, or still “courting?” [I just love that word]. Beautiful People [in more ways than one]. PS – Joe collects postcards! What an interesting and fun thing to collect! Does he have favorites or a theme or anything? Or does he just buy whatever strikes his fancy, finds interesting, attractive, etc? And of course, I have to add here “… he should do a book someday…”

Also LOVE the “burning” fireplace!! Going to spend some time by that fire tonight waiting for our own snow to start here in upstate New York. Supposedly during tomorrow morning’s commute. Why couldn’t it wait until about 8 or 9 pm tomorrow night? When we’re all sufficiently-supplied with storm necessities & goodies and can be socked in good-and-tight for the weekend? Thanks for the popcorn reminder – a really good idea since I don’t think I DO have any at home. One more item for my quick list. Here’s hoping the storm is not quite as “historic” as the Talking Heads are saying and that everyone in its path is adequately prepared for the next few days! Sue, that house of yours always makes me think of a sturdy, stalwart Yankee clipper ship sailing along through the Sound… Enjoy your time tucked safely inside it – it will shelter you as it has so many others for decades! And as long as you have Joe and Girl and Jack – and Jack has the odd bug or two, things should be good! xoxo and happy weekend too. :>)

  11. CindyK says:

Happy Belated Anniversary! It sounded like you celebrated in a very nice way.
I just loved the fire!! I’d love to make a crackling fire my wall paper! I’m sure you’ll have one going for your coming snow storm! I’m jealous! I would love a crippling snow storm! You can’t get any more cozier than that! Loved the picture at the end, you two are so lovely together! Enjoy your snow!

    • sbranch says:

I know, it sounds so awful, a crippling snow storm, but if you are warm safe inside, it just sounds exciting.

  12. Sarah Maldonado says:

Happy Anniversary, Susan and Joe! Your special time and here you’ve blessed US with another lovely post and a Willard to look forward to. I’m missing the snow! We haven’t had any this year but I’ll live vicariously and have some tea anyway! I’m reliving my special birthday surprise from last week when my step-sister and 3 cousins drove many hours to be with me on my 60th! We shared laughter, tea, stories of our parents and a cake with a Downton theme! Now, Sunday will be my hubby’s and my 23rd anniversary! It has always been our joke that if we celebrate for two weeks we can cover my birthday, our anniversary and Valentine’s Day in one big party! Merry Anniversary and many more for you two love birds, too, Susan!

  13. helen says:

Happy Anniversary!…..nothing more romantic than being snowed in:-)))

  14. Marion Rose says:

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!!! Isn’t it wonderful to be happy, loving, warm and thinking about what you will cook next. That is why you just celebrated 26 years and it only gets better!
We are busy getting ready for our Valentine Party! Home is decorated, baking
has started and my Tomato Soup is cooking on the stove. I look forward to the storm that is coming tomorrow, it will be relaxing watching the snow come down. We try to be prepared for what ever happens with electricity!!! Seems like a snow storm slows everyone down so they can smell the roses.
Today is so nice out, sun shining, wind is not blowing and it is cold and brisk. Hard to believe that a storm is coming that they are calling a Blizzard!!!
Tomorrow will be a good day for you to write, paint and have tea, Enjoy

  15. Rhonda P. in Woodson, TX says:

Susan I loved your anniversary post…so sweet! My husband and I will celebrate our 40th this summer, Lord willing, and we plan to spend a week in Cloudcroft, NM. It is our favorite little mountain town and where we spent our honeymoon! Wish you could send some of that blizzard to Texas…we are warm AND dry in February. Stay safe, we’ll be thinking about you.

  16. Julie Bersano says:

    Susan…Blessings to you too!
I love your roaring fire 🙂 We don’t keep ours going anymore b/c of the expense of the wood, etc. I’ll just imagine the warmth through yours.

Thank you for the unique recipes and Winter cheer. I am going to try the banana one and the tea cake too. YUM! We have the same tastes…..chocolate, fruit, tea…aahhh. We are not getting the snow here…just drizzle of rain in MO.

I saw the honey wand? on your table..where do you find those? I have this great local honey in a wide-mouth jar and am currently usig the end of a knife to get it out..LOL

Julie (a mere baby who is curious?? in MO)

  17. Ro from Rose Cottage, New Jersey says:

Happy Anniversary Susan and Joe, May you always remain young looking in each other’s eyes!
It gets easier as you get older and your eye sight starts to fail! (Thats a grandma joke)
The Weather man says we in New Jersey are on the border line of snow and rain and freezing muck! Where they are predicting Feets of snow in your neighborhood!
Stay cozy on your Island, Remember the crocus are starting to get ready to bloom!

  18. Libby Pasztor (Grayslake, IL) says:

Happy Anniversary, Susan and Joe! How very romantic, to be snowed in for your anniversary……(I know it was yesterday, but still——) Rita was right—the snow around Chicago has been very measly this year, but up here north of the city it’s been snowing most of the afternoon and it’s SO pretty…….I can say that because my Valentine (husband-of-38-years Tom) will be out with the snowblower when he gets home from work tonight. 🙂 Actually, I like shoveling snow once in awhile, but my doctor has given me strict orders–“No more shoveling snow, no heavy lifting at all!” Sigh. . . . so all I can do is look out the window and admire all the lovely dancing flakes—too bad! 🙂 Enjoy your snowstorm (I think they’ve named this one Nemo)—hope he doesn’t do too much damage out there!

  19. Marianne says:

Happy 26 to you and Joe, Susan. Last year’s celebration looked like such a good time, but it is oh, So romantic – to have a quiet day together like you did this year. My guy and I celebrated 40 back in August. So fun to see the back page of your book – which I’m so looking forward to – thank you so much.

  20. Sue U. says:

Happy, Happy Anniversary and many, many more. We are under a winter storm watch here in Minnesnowta, too. Just woke up from a nap by the fire. Cheeseburger soup is thawing in the sink for supper. Day is complete. Life is good.

  21. Patty from California says:

Congratulations to you and Joe on your anniversary! Luck, love, patience, and the right attitudes make it all work, don’t they? You two seem to be quite a team. I loved finding your latest post today and wish you safety and warmth through the blizzard. Seems exciting from a southern California point of view! I just loved another glimpse of THE BOOK! Can’t wait. Take care! XO

  22. Sandy from New Vineyard says:

    Hi Susan!
We’re gearing up for the big storm here as well. It’s sure to be cozy with lots of ideas I could do: cook (your orange chocolate-chip tea biscuits look really good!), crochet, read, listen to music, make some Valentines…. Oh, the choices!! A very happy anniversary to you and Joe. My husband and I will be celebrating 30 years this June. I loved your idea last year of inviting people in for breakfast to celebrate. Just may have to use that idea! Hope you have a safe and wonderful weekend. Thank you again for adding some specialness to my day with your writing and photos. It’s always a treat! God bless!

    • sbranch says:

I can’t say enough nice things about having a breakfast, especially in the winter, it’s just so intimate!

  23. Francine says:

Happy Anniversary! Every healthy day you have together is a blessing, believe me! In Wisconsin it is snowing, and I guess we are sending it your way! But we are only supposed to get 4 – 7 inches! Very pretty, if you’re in, looking out! I’ve been cleaning and have beef stew simmering in the crockpot. Not so romantic! Always enjoy seeing your pretty dishes! Let us know how it goes with the snowstorm!

  24. Pat Salada says:

    Warmest congratulations !
Thanks for the tea buscuit recipe; a perfect treat for Valentine’s Day.

  25. Cheryl in Kentucky says:

Happy Anniversary to both of you! It is so lovely to see the love and warmth the two of you share, it always comes through in your posts. Congratulations, may you have many, many more.
Stay warm and safe up there in the next week.

  26. just cats says:

What a beautiful post. “Happy Anniversary to you both.”

  27. Victoria Miller says:

Oh, Susan and Joe, so Happy Anniversary! and may the love and joy of your union continue to bond and blossom for you both through the many, many, many years to come! Coincidentally, I had a particularly sweet thing happen yesterday. I went out to go to the library, and heard my name called. A neighbor, whom I’m sweet on and never quite sure.., asked me if I wanted a ride, and then as we were getting in the car, if I wanted to stop somewhere ‘for a bite.’ He took me to a lovely little Japanese Thai restaurant and we had a lovely dinner. I never did get to the library, we just returned to our respective homes. It’s complicated…but I’m happy to learn that wonderful little surprise happened on your anniversary! I know whatever happens, that lovely little detour will always be a sweet memory, and now I can remember the date easily. This post this morning is just icing on the cake, with coconut! It is romantic, it certainly is….even if it’s just getting your feet a little wet…. Thank you again for all the work you and Joe have put in with your wonderful books and blog and the store. And YOU GO GAL! AND GUY!

    • sbranch says:

Whatever the complications, that did sound like FUN! Romance is a wonderful thing!

    • Linda from Lancaster Co. PA says:

Oh, Victoria, I love real life, in-the-moment stories, that we don’t know how they will end! I’m hoping you will see him again! Keep us girlfriends posted, please!

  28. Marie Fluck says:

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, YOU TWO! I wish you loads more lovely romantic years ahead! Enjoy every minute. I miss my love. It’s been 8 years now since he has gone to be with our Lord. But, I have wonderful memories to hang on to. Keep the fire going! Marie

  29. Marianne says:

Sorry – I think I meant to say back cover of your book.

  30. Eileen says:

Happy Anniversary!—We’re under the same “historic” storm warnings here in Connecticut—–time to batten down the hatches. (I sure wish I had a fireplace!) Stay safe!

  31. Susan Simon says:

Happy, happy, happy anniversary to you and Joe, Susan! Wishing you many more years of kisses and cherishing every day and each other. Joe is such a wondrful man to bring you lovely roses… and you share yummy banana fritters with him. Bliss!

Sitting here typing this in our suburb of Chicago, watching the snow fly… but we are only supposed to get ours in inches, not feet! Hope you are well stocked and ready for whatever the storm brings… perhaps some candlelight will be needed but I am sure you’ll enjoy that if it happens.
Take care, and enjoy your storm… hope it’s really snowy but there are not any problems that come with it. Wonder what Jack will make of all that snow? I am sure Girl Kitty will be her usual charming self and not be disturbed by it. I am already looking forward to the pictures!
Your blog is something I look forward to every day… checked it this morning, and no new entry… ran some errands and came home to a wonderful new treat to read. Thank you again for sharing yourself and your life and home with all of us.

  32. Willa says:

It worked! I willed you to post on the blog today because I needed it. I’ve checked my email at least 5 times during the day just knowing it would be here soon….and here it is! Thank you Susan for sharing your beautiful pictures and thoughts on love and romance with us. As soon as I heard about the storm coming your way I thought, if anyone can weather a storm it’s Susan and Joe. Can’t wait to hear all about it. I’m pea green with envy because we have had nothing but a piddly amount here in Alexandria VA. Again….living vicariously through you and lovin’ each moment! XOXO

  33. Joann says:

First of all…I LOVE THE FIRE….makes me want to get one going here…

  34. Deb from Dixie says:

    Happy Anniversary Susan and Joe!
Cheers to 26 years of love and laughter….and all the adventures that are yet to come!
A good blizzard….sounds like fun, especially knowing you, Joe and kitties….will be cozy, snuggled in, warm inside, with the crackling fire in the fireplace….a bowl full of popcorn and M&M’s…..and you are safe……watching the snow fly outside. Kind of enchanting actually…..”the blizzard of the century ” they are saying on the news down here in Florida.
( maybe it sounds enchanting to me because I don’t have to shovel all of it……yikes).
Have fun playing in all that snow….then wait for it to melt……LOL, so Joe will not have to tunnel you out….LOL!
Us girlfriends will be thinking of you!
    Happy Happy Anniversary!

Hi again Susan… I remembered seeing a wonderful wooden handled strainer you had on your sink once, so I went back through your blog and found your link to your “favorite kitchen store” LeRoux Kitchen, called them, and ordered me one!… a really nice nice lady named “Karen” helped me and said she knows you that you go in there all the time… how fun!… she is shipping it out to me as soon as she can, depending on your BIG storm coming… I am sooo excited to be getting it, especially from your beautiful Martha’s Vineyard!… YOU are such an inspiration… I LOVE to cook and am in our kitchen alot… my Jack is giving it to me for Valentines… maybe doesn’t sound romantic to some, but it is to me!… thank you for always inspiring me… with everything you do!… xoxo Julie Marie

  41. Jane F. says:

Happy Anniversary, Susan! Enjoy the snow! I know you will. I always loved those big storms. Everything comes to a halt and people are just nicer to each other! I even loved shoveling it — you feel so alive and excited in all that fresh air!! My New England blood coming through! Actually my Viking/Celtic (Swedish/Irish) blood. What a combination!

You are an inspiration to writers everywhere, with your single-minded focus and making what could be a tedious job really fun! Good for you! And Thanks!!

  42. Jane says:

Oh my goodness! You are really in for a doozy of a storm! Please stay warm and safe. And Happy Anniversary! We just celebrated 26 years in December. I want nothing more than to grow old with my guy! I love that picture of you and Joe. Very sweet!

Now we want to see a few snowmen and snow angels in your next post!! ;-D

    XO,
    Jane From Chicago

  43. MoeWest says:

Happy Anniversary! It sounds like you had a lovely day. Thanks for reminding me about those tea biscuits. I saved the recipe last year, so I must make them on the 14th. I like watching a storm from inside where it’s warm and cozy. Luckily you have a fire place in case the power goes out. I hope the storm doesn’t do much damage.

  44. Debbie S., IL says:

Happy Anniversary to you and Joe, may you have many more! Stay safe and warm with the blizzard on it’s way – we are having a little snowstorm of our own today here in IL, big, beautiful flakes falling turning everything into a winter wonderland. It’s been a good day to stay inside and make Valentine treats for my daughter’s bridesmaids who are arriving this weekend to pick out dresses! Thanks for sharing the love with all of us!

  45. Nancy Paine says:

    Susan,
What a sweet picture of the two of you from way back when! My hubby and I will hit 24 years this September. Sometimes it seems like just a few years, we have been together, but then when I see old pictures of us and how we have changed, and look in the mirror- I have to laugh! Guess it’s been a TAD longer- lol! All good, I do not worry about aging- it’s what is supposed to happen. SO nice to have someone along for that ride, too!
Enjoy the storm, and please share more pictures! It is gorgeous here in AZ, sunny and about perfect, 70 degress! Love both places, yours, and mine!
    Nancy (Snowflakealdy)

  46. Kathy Phenix says:

Wow!! Finishing up the “book”, celebrating your 26th anniversary AND a new Willard! Not sure who is getting the gifts (just kidding–all of the girlfriends get gifts whenever you do a new blog) but sure do enjoy the anticipation! Hope the snow is picturesque and nothing more. Having power would make it so much more enjoyable. Kiss the kitties for me! Love, Kathy

    • sbranch says:

Power is nice. I don’t mind a four or five hour break though!

      • Pat Mofjeld from St. Paul, Minnesota says:

It is always so quiet and peaceful when the power goes–not even a hum from the refrigerator. We light the oil lamps around the house and get out the board games. I agree, though, it is more enjoyable when it is just for a limited amount of time… 🙂

So in honor of your historic blizzard (I’m so jealous, wish I were there) I put on a big pot of chicken soup. Smells divine. We are also celebrating my Gabriella’s 7th birthday (Granddaughter). It’s raining, boo but you will get the snow. I am watching from Chicago. I have also started having afternoon teas. What a wonderful idea. I look forward to it each and everyday. Enjoy the storm, love to you and Joe. We will be celebrating our 34th wedding anniversary this August. Did you see the record holder’s of being married. It was 80 years, omg they were a simply adorable husband and wife.

  48. Karen Saunders says:

My husband flew to Arizona to see his brother and I had to stay home and watch the dogs so I watched 68 episodes of ‘Upstairs Downstairs’ and I now have an English accent. I also gave myself a present and sent to England to Emma and bought a Hellebore teapot, a plate, two tea cups and saucers and a mug to match the one I bought from you Susan…..I’m pretty bad. I also noticed that when the family ate in the dining room their table was bare with wood and underneath the plates they had round doilies. (When you watch 68 episodes…..you kinda notice stuff). Really need that book Susan…..

  49. Linda in Texas says:

Awww, Happy Anniversary. Love the photo of you two. A coconut cake in the back freezer says romance to me. 🙂

You’re expecting 12″ of snow, and we’ve got 73 degrees here in North Texas. This morning a flock, must have been hundreds of robins came by. They didn’t say where they were going, but they left suddenly after gorging themselves on the neighbor’s pyracantha berries.

    Stay warm.

  50. Victoria Miller says:

Your post today was so inspiring, Susan, a sonnet blossomed:

Anniversary Sonnet for Susan and Joe

So softly have the seasons turned and folded,
like turns of the wooden spoon within the mix.
Nothing there’s been we couldn’t make together,
nothing could break that we two couldn’t fix.
Candles, Christmas Lights, starlight, firelight – our light
showing the color paths of every day,
where we dance the twirls of being two together,
so swirling, guide one other on our way.
You still the hero who scaled the wall to my heart,
me still the blushing girl who let you in.
We’ve come such a ways through tapestry of memories
to each coming day, the new strands to begin.

Revealed where love’s sweet sunlight chance to fall,
Shadow of two hearts, entwined upon the wall.

~ for Joe and Susan Branch, 26th Wedding Anniversary

  51. violet says:

You and Joe would have made great parents.I love your home ,it’s prettier than anything in England.Happy Anniversary!

    • sbranch says:

We’re good kitty parents! We didn’t meet in time, other things were in store for us, as it seems to have worked out!

  52. Ann Y. Adamstown, PA says:

Happy Anniversary ! Such a blessing to find your soul mate and “live the years together”. Glad you enjoyed your quiet, cozy anniversary – and wishing you a cozy snowstorm. I know that you don’t want TOO much snow…but enough that world stops, you have a fire, and tea….Bliss. Can’t wait for Willard and for the new book to come out. And…though I probably won’t get it in time for Valentine’s Day, I gotta get me one of those heart pans. I tried a new scone recipe last week ( apricot and white chocolate) and they would be SO CUTE in heart shape. Don’t know how much snow we will get in PA, but I am hoping for enough for a NO SCHOOL day !

    • sbranch says:

I really think all food should come in heart shapes! That instantly made me think of the bologna my brothers used to eat, where they’d bite out eyes and a mouth!

      • Ann Y. Adamstown, PA says:

Love it ! And the previous comment about being good parents…agreed. We are the same, never blessed with children, but we have lots of children in our lives and we laugh that our marriage has been ONE BIG DATE !!!

        • sbranch says:

I have almost felt guilty when we’ve been having breakfast in bed and friends are dealing with the school system! But is just is what it is!

          • Pat Mofjeld from St. Paul, Minnesota says:

Same thing here. We often comment that we have been blessed with good “doggie kids” over the years. Things are the way they are. I trust no one is going to be waiting at Heaven’s gates checking off whether we had human children or not. And when we are somewhere and hear a child screaming in a tantrum, Norm says to me, “Don’t complain to me about Fannie or Betti–they are angel children!” LOL! 🙂

  53. Paula B. says:

Warm and cozy, that’s what your home will be for the big blizzard and that’s how you two looked from that long ago pic. Battening down the hatches here, school has already been canceled, got provisions (including M and M’s) at the market, and am ordering a book for the Kindle, so we’re all set for epic snow tomorrow. Isn’t it ironic that this week was the thirty fifth anniversary of the Blizzard of ’78, now that was a storm for the ages here in Rhode Island…. Hope you and Joe, and the rest of New England, and Long Island, come through this just fine. Looking forward to island pictures post blizzard, take care. Hope there’s cake left (for weathering the storm).

    • Chris Wells from West TX says:

Paula, I remember that Blizzard well! I lived in Ohio. We lived in an older home, and I woke up that morning to a pile of snow in my kitchen that seeped in under and around the back door! I had never seen snow in my house before! Even before we lost power the furnace could not keep up, it was so cold in the house. And my beautiful 50 ft blue spruce came down. It was quite an adventure. As the storm subsided, neighbors began checking on each other, we had a lot of elderly on our street. Everyone was fine. Back then you didn’t even know a storm was coming, you just woke up and there it was!

      • Linda from Lancaster Co. PA says:

        Chris and Paula,
I lived in the Pocono Mts. at the time, in the city of E. Stroudsburg with two other teachers. The snow was so high on the shoveled sidewalks that it came up to my head–and I am 5’8″!!! We had a week off from school. Nice, but we kind of went crazy. We made new words to the song “The 12 Days of Christmas”. I remember the “five golden rings” part we changed to “five sunny days” and we began with “On the first day of winter my true love gave to me a snow shovel and a pair of skis”. Those were the days! Thanks for bringing back such fun memories!
        Linda

  54. Laura Croyle says:

HAPPY Anniversary!! What an Adorable photo of the two of you! Enjoyed all the other lovely photos, too! You’ve inspired me to try your chocolate chip orange tea biscuits!! Maybe I’ll make them for Valentine’s Day! We usually stay home, but it’s fun to do something special.
Wow! You’re expecting hurricane force winds and 1- 2 feet is snow??! Better batten down the hatches and keep those home fires burning! Stay safe and cozy!
    Hugs,
    Laura C.

  55. Judy in Oregon says:

Happy Anniversary! We have barely had snow here this year. I would love to have just one good snow storm. My son is going to be thrilled he lives in Boston right now and loves that snow.

  56. Darci says:

Happy, happy anniversary to you and your hubby! I wish you many more. I can’t imagine anything better than having a quiet celebration with the one you love.

  57. “A regular day” that was extraordinary because you could say, one to the other, “Happy Anniversary, Dearest.” It’s the smallest things of life that nourish us when we need those memories most.
Happy Anniversary, Susan and Joe; may the worst of 2013 be from the best of 2012.

  58. So many sweet stories you share with us, Susan! I would like to thank you individually on here for each one. I hope this big “THANK YOU” covers at least some of them. There were Joe’s old postcards, a hidden coconut cake hidden in the freezer, the delicious breakfast photos, the dishes, that gorgeous photo of you and Joe, and of course a photo of Jack. You knew I would not forget Jack!

Stay safe and warm if this big storm hits! Of course, please share some pics and stories with us, too. ♥

    • sbranch says:

I will definitely take some pictures, not sure yet how far out we will venture, we’ll see if we can get the door open! 🙂

  59. Michele Perkins says:

    Hello Susan,

What a lovely surprise to find your new note today – they are always so much fun to read and to see all your inspiring photos and sweet stories of you and your little family!

Here in Vermont, we are also bracing for that blizzard which will be fun to witness! Have a cozy day tomorrow in front of the fire with Joe and Jack and Girl! Don’t forget to stock up on some snacks in case you lose your power.

Happy Anniversary to a lovely couple and many more!
    Waiting for the storm….
    Michele in Vermont 🙂

  60. Christine Aschbacher says:

Get ready it’s on its way!!!! I live in northern Illinois and it has been snowing all day!!!!! It is just beautiful out! It’s like a winter wonderland!!!! Stay warm!!!! Looks like you have plenty of food!

  61. joanna says:

May I ask you some personal questions Susan? One is, you apparently have never had children-was this by choice? Was Joe married before? I assume he is retired-did he have a profession? If so, does he ever miss it?
That’s it for now. Just trying to get to know you better. I have been married 26 years also-27 in June. 5 children and have always lived in sunny california. Happy (belated) Anniversary and may you have many more! love from ca. 🙂

    • sbranch says:

I was married, my husband really didn’t want children, but I thought he would “change” and then we got divorced, and I didn’t meet Joe until I was 39, so that sort of took care of that. It’s OK, I had seven little brothers and sisters, a new baby came almost every two years the whole time I lived at home – I feel like I had children the easy way! My mom was happy to share! Joe was never married, and he was part owner and ran the Black Dog restaurant here on the island for 25 years. He doesn’t miss it, and neither do I!

      • Janet [in Rochester] says:

Oh!! Maybe THAT’S why my college friend from Boston always says ‘The Black Dog’ is just not the same great place it used to be a while back??? Maybe she’s remembering it when Joe managed it? She’s been saying this for 10 years [plus or minus]. Has he been “out of the biz” that long? I’m not surprised to hear he doesn’t miss it. Though I’m sure it’s creative, rewarding & fun for many people, it’s also very difficult in many respects. I’ve had friends in the industry talk about things most of us would never even think about. Example – how do you go away for vacation when you run a restaurant? You usually can’t just close down & lose a week or two of income, not to mention cut off wages and tips for your staffers? And if you remain open, do you have someone you can trust who is also knowledgeable enough to run things? A fairly tough business overall, I think. :>)

        • sbranch says:

Yes, about ten years ago, and it did take a bit of a nose dive — Joe loves to cook, so when he went away, that kind of care went with it, and what is a restaurant without good food! Joe is the guy who put the dog on the shirt too… he ran it for such a long time. I understand the “How do you go away” — that’s why I don’t miss it! 🙂 Free at last!

          • Janet [in Rochester] says:

I’ll have to remember to tell my friend. She’s mentioned it several times over the years – whenever we talk about MV as our reunion destination [we’ll get there someday too!]. Well, anyone who loves to cook can do that anywhere AND without the management-style headaches that must have gone along with running a major place like the Black Dog. Good for Joe. Did he get to cook every day, Sue? Or did management stuff just steadily creep in and take over all his time? Just wondering… :>)

          • sbranch says:

He cooked for a long time, but as it grew, you’re right, he ended up doing more directing and suggesting than actually cooking.

          • jane townsend says:

Just noticed your comment on the Black Dog. We spent a holiday on the island several years ago (2004 I think) and still have 2 Tshirts and a Black Dog Sweatshirt! Didn’t realise there was a connection back then (I knew your name through your wonderful books but didn’t know the people behind them.)

          • sbranch says:

Yes, the Black Dog was home away from home for many years, we were there so much. Joe asked me out on our first date in that restaurant.

  62. Diana - Highland, IL says:

Oh Susan, this post brought a tear or two to my eye. I am a “mushmellow” as my Dad would say, but you and Joe are just right for each other. My hubs is not a big romatic guy.. he would say not at all, but he has his small moments every day that I treasure.. .he gets me coffee, he cleans better than I do and does the vacuuming, and makes me very “interesting” drinks!! LOL.. sets the thermostat to automatically come on for me in the morning when it is time to get ready for work, etc… that is the stuff of life and I can’t imagine living it any other way…. I can tell you both are the same.. maybe a little more! Thanks for reminding us that there is romance around every corner! I wish you and Joe a happy happy anniversary and you can just keep on celebrating through the snowstorm!!… In your honor, I just got off work, lit a fire and going to make a nice cup of coffe to go watch it before the hubs comes home!… Thanks again and enjoy your days!!

  63. Lorraine says:

One of life’s most precious gifts is the ability to spend it with someone you love, and to be loved in return. Happy anniversary and enjoy the blizzard.

  64. Dawn from Minnesota says:

: .} yes, it is romantic! And as sweet as a warm banana fritter and as happy as a missing rubber band on the rubber band wall! I hope you have a pretty blizzard. Stay cozy! Any favorite snow movies? We have just started watching a new series on NetFlix…House of Cards, with Kevin Spacey and Robyn Wright…it is based on a BBC series of the same name…I think Bret would welcome a snow day to watch them all in a row. “Thank You,” for the firelight…..it was romantic….and a surprise! And….I would Love to see your page of paint squiggles and pencil marks in the diary….really truly! Does that make me romantic? Sentimental? Silly? They are cute and colorful and you! xoxox

  65. judi says:

Sweet post and what a lovely pic of the two of you. I also love housewares and have some sweet little bowls. Mine are mostly blue and white with hardly any markings but just the right size for many things:) just picked up here and there. Sounds like you had a delightful anniversay day. Again, Happy Anniversary from me and . . . Dr. Seuss:)
Hope you are able send us little snippets of your storm – we will all be wondering how you two are doing. xxxooo judi

    • sbranch says:

I’ll try, are you on Twitter? I might send some quick photos that way!

      • judi says:

not on it….but can click on it on your sidebar and see your pics:) p.s. love your back page too…..yes, I was there too:)))

        • sbranch says:

That’s perfect, just enough! Glad you like the back…it’s great being able to show it ahead of time and get a bit of feedback! I never wrote a book with the internet around before, it’s made a big difference!

  66. Kristina Moore says:

    Congratulations, Susan & Joe! XOXO

  67. Christine Anderson says:

Sounds like the most perfect way to spend an anniversary , quietly with the one you love and share your life with! A very happy Anniversary to you and Joe!

  68. Barbara T, Wolverine Lake MI says:

It was sooooo exciting to come home from work today and find a package from Susan Branch on my doorstep!! (not a gift, but an order I had placed). LOVE the apple card! I have a friend who has been sick this week (bad cold) and she is a grandma, and her last name is Smith and they call her Granny Smith (so cute!!) that card is just perfect – I will take it over to her in the A.M.!! 🙂 I have one of your painted tea strainers (I keep it hanging underneath my china cabinet on display with some antique tea strainers). I was pleased to see your photo of it in today’s blog. SNOW on the way, nothing yet, but I filled all my birdfeeders up to the tops tonight in anticipation. Nothing prettier than a bunch of cardinals in the snow, eating their sunflower seeds 🙂 for that matter, nothing is prettier than fresh snow! Can’t wait. Bring it!!

  69. Becky Farnsworth says:

I love the fire!!!! Happy Anniversary – may each year get better.
I have been worrying about you as the storm predictions keep getting worse. I am far enough south that we are only getting rain but you will really need to batten down the hatches. Stay safe and thanks for sharing all your joys with us!

  70. Margot in Virginia Beach says:

I am worrying for you! Keep that fireplace burning!!! Don’t try to shovel until the winds die down. Whoosh!
Thank you for the recipe! I love orange and chocolate. Raspberry and chocolate too!!! I have the pan. 😉
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!! They announced on the news this AM a couple who has been married 80 years! He is 101 and she is 97. I knew two couples married 75+ years.
For you and me loves seems to be lovelier the second time around, but we can dream of a 50th.
I love the cottage drawing with the sayings. One of my favorites of yours!
    LOVE,
    Margot

    • sbranch says:

Love is lovelier the second time around … especially if it’s not so lovely the first time!

      • Margot in Virginia Beach says:

And it wasn’t. Maybe we just expected the whole world was good after our good childhoods and most of it isn’t, so we learned the hard way and held out for Mr. Right.

  71. Rita from MN says:

Happy Anniversary! Love the photo of you two. Joe was just as handsome then as he is now. Lucky you! And not just because he is handsome. 🙂
(Of course, Joe is pretty lucky, too.)

    • sbranch says:

His handsomeness was actually one of the things that made me unsure of him, I never trusted very handsome guys. But this one worked out! Now I look at him and think, he is so beautiful.

  73. Mary-Agnes from Long Island, NY says:

    Hi Susan,

Congratulations to you and Joe on 26 years together! Down here we’ve gone from “winter storm warning” to “blizzard warning” for tomorrow night/Saturday, with 10-14 inches predicted. Just when we thought Mother Nature might gave us a break after the nasty autumn she hit us with. We’ve got popcorn, cocoa, and kitties to see us through, but alas, no fireplace. So I’ll just turn on my laptop and look at the great picture of your fireplace blazing away. Stay warm and cozy; hope you don’t lose your power!

  74. Josie A (Valencia, PA) says:

So lovely! Your home, your kitties, and you and Joe. Happy Anniversary!!

  75. Happy Anniversary! Congratulations on reaching a big number – 26 years. (We’ll be at 38 this April. We joke that we both just married the first thing that came along and stuck with it. I’m thinking it’s going to work out, though.)

Those chocolate chip scones look enticing, as does a day by the fire with tea. I’ve never experienced an Atlantic blizzard but that certainly had my share of Canadian prairie winters. Batten down the hatches, eh.

  76. Wendy Louise says:

Happy Anniversary Joe and Susan ! I wrote another message yesterday and for some reason it did not go through and I sent it twice, I’m still getting used to my new MacBook Pro, and will be for a long while I’m sure. I am so excited for this snow storm, I’m making turkey soup right now so we have soup to heat by the fire. I love romance so much and I married my soul mate and he is just as sweet, nice, and creative as your Joe. It is such a blessing to be able to create and nurture such a relationship and you my dear are the creative extraordinaire of romance ! Thank-you so much for sharing so much with us girlfriends. My favorite things to do is: Nesting, ” to create and nurture a warm and peaceful haven.” I feel so warm and cozy knowing there are so many others out there doing the same thing. I can’t wait to go out and play in the snow and make another snowman and maybe a snowwoman too ! Love you lots, Wendy-Lou 😉

  77. Kathy says:

Happy Anniversary, Susan, to you and Joe. How lucky you both were to find each other! Look at the joy and happiness you experience together. I love your blogs, musings, pictures, etc., etc., etc! Can’t tell you what a joy-filled heart you warm!
Thank you, as always. Stay well…so you can continue to make so many happy!!
    Happy day!

  78. Stephanie says:

I own your Lenox tea strainer – and still have the cute box it came in! I love using it.

Congrats on your 26th! You guys give me hope that great relationships are possible!

Down here in NY we’re preparing for the storm too. I stocked up on more wood today and am off to the grocery store now for final provisions. I’d love a blog about how you prep for a storm on MV. Does Joe get extra wood? Do you have any tricks about preparing? I love winter and love snow. It feels so good to be home and cozy and satisfied that I have enough food and wood and candles to get me through. It must be something ancient in us that feels good that we can weather these kinds of storms. Have you ever read “The Long Winter” by Laura Ingalls Wilder? THERE is a book that will make you appreciate all the conveniences we have today and appreciate all our ancestors went through to get us here.

Happy Anniversary – stay warm and hope you get through storm ok. Take lots of pictures for us!

    • sbranch says:

I watched an old PBS special called something like “1900” and that’s when I got over wanting to really live back in time. When I saw them wash their sheets, outside, in a cauldron over a wood fire, in the snow, I said, no thank you. We are so lucky!

  79. Melody says:

Oh dear Susan, happy anniversary to you and your sweet Joe! What a lovely post to read from you. Our anniversary is coming up this month on the 25th. It will be 29 years for us. So, I was kind of pleased we celebrate in the same month, and actually close on the number of years!
How sweet Joe was to bring the roses home for you and surprise you with the cake.

I heard you were in for a blizzard. Hope you enjoy it, and don’t lose your power! Stay safe.

  80. Ritchie Saunders says:

Happiest of anniversaries to you both. We celebrated our 55th last September :o) Lots of water under the bridge but life just seems to get busier and more fun! Loved seeing your outlook towards the storm. Daughter who lives near Boston traveling this weekend to see their son in college swim at a meet at Scranton. I figured they would cancel! Heck No…you New Englanders are one adventurous hardy group! Best!!! Ritchie

  81. Cyndi in NC says:

Happy Anniversary!! Many many more happy years to you both. Last year was what we call a milestone and in reality every year together is a blessing. I just heard about the couple who are 101 and 94, I think, and have been married for 80 years and he still likes to put his hand on her knee!! I can only hope to have many more years with my husband, the love of my life. *S* I hope you all don’t lose your power! I would be ok with a couple of feet of snow if I had power!! Can’t wait for Willard. I love to read it and see what you have for us. The book!!!!!! I can’t wait to get my copy. I’m sure there won’t be a lot of work in my house getting done! Ha! That’s ok, as long as I feed Jim it’ll be ok. *L* Hang in there and I’ll keep my fingers crossed on the power!!

  82. shirley burt says:

Susan and Joe, Happy Anniversary !!!!!!!! I worry about the blizzard for you, but know Joe has everything under control, and all of you will be safe and warm because of him. So enjoy the wind and snow and fire and good things to eat. For I know you are prepared. Much love and bunny hugs to all of you. Enjoy your Blizzard.

    Shirley

  83. Jean Hensley says:

I love your blog and share it with my sweet granddaughter, who is a wedding photographer and enjoys beautiful the beautiful things you post.

  84. Kathie Ferko says:

    Hi,

Happy Anniversary to you both….hope you had a lovely day. We are having some snow where I live in Pa., but not a monumental snow like New England!
Hope all the girlfriends are good…have not blogged for a while…working alot of hours lately!
I too have a bowl with “WOOD” written on the it. It is a small pink transfer dish. I believe the company is ENOCH WOOD. This is one of my small little treasures! Pink transfer is my favorite but I also have alot of blue and white.

  85. Mary E.Dadds says:

    You two are gorgous!
    Happy anniversary!

    • sbranch says:

Thank you for the information Kathie, nice to see you here again!

    • Margot in Virginia Beach says:

      Kathie,
I have always wondered how Limerick, PA got its name. Let us know. My dad is from PA.
      Margot

      • Kathie Ferko says:

        Hi Margo,

Nice to meet you. I have lived in Limerick, Pa for about 27 yrs. I really don’t know if we are a sister city with the Limerick in Ireland…or maybe they just picked this name at random. I am originally from Reading, Pa…which is a sister city with Reading, England! Where is your father from in PA?

  87. Sylvia Faye says:

The best of days sometimes, including anniversaries, is just being able to be together and enjoy the peace and harmony that flows from one to the other. Having your kitties are fun for your ‘sisters in blogland’ as well. We enjoy Girl Kitty as she is truly a lady cat with a sweet face as for Jack, he seems to always be looking for some mischief, n’est-ce pas? Happy 26th to both of you. You make the ideal couple and we feel privileged to be able to share your stories, your home, your receipes, your ideals and love.

Both by daughters are expected to feel the blizzard tomorrow. One lives on the Cape and will be driving home from a business trip and will be home by 2:00am…she feels she should be home before the storm hits and for this I pray as well. My other daughter lives in Ontario but they have the same warning so I also pray that she and her family will be alright. Her husband is in the hospital.

Love, love the pictures of your fires in the fireplace. Thank you Joe. You so compliment your dear wife Susan.

    With gratitude,
    Sylvia Faye

    • sbranch says:

I see tiny little inkling that maybe, just maybe, it won’t be so bad on the Cape and Islands . . . but these big maps, you just never know! I will give Joe your message Sylvia, thank you!

  88. First of all, congrats and Happy Anniversary!! We’re ahead of you by a few years and it’s still romantic! Second…batten down the hatches! We haven’t had a blizzard here in our part of Colorado for years…it’s about time! What a lovely way to celebrate your special day by cooking for others. And it never grows old when they surprise you with flowers does it?! Enjoy. I know you’ve been working hard on the book. It’s almost done, and then you can hit the road! You think? lol…………we may all need one after this snowstorm……..lol. Stay warm and stay safe and no heavy shoveling for that man of yours. hugs to you both!

    You two look Lovely.Happy Anniversary!

  92. Rae Ann from northern Michigan...now in Minnesota... says:

ooohhh…the Minneapolis weatherman just said 1′ to 3′ of snow for your area…

    • sbranch says:

hmmm — I always have to remember how the weather people try to scare us and then afterward talk about upper level air flow. But we do like to be ready. Or, 🙂 at least I do!

    • Margot in Virginia Beach says:

When I moved from WI to NH the big debate was…who is heartier? A Mid-Westerner OR a New Englander. When it hit -30 degrees this Mid-Westerner won out!!! LOL

      • sbranch says:

I would think so! I have never seen -30 in this neck of the woods, and really, wouldn’t want to. How do you keep the house warm?

        • Rae Ann from northern Michigan...now in Minnesota... says:

The wind chill has been -30* here multiple times this winter…I close all window coverings to help block out the wind and crank up the furnace and fireplace…and stay inside as much as possible…they haven’t closed schools here when it gets that cold!!!…they did close school here one day for icy roads…

    • Pat Mofjeld from St. Paul, Minnesota says:

Rae Ann, I JUST heard the same thing from the weatherman here! My BFF lives in a suburb of Boston so I’ll be thinking of her and Susan tomorrow! 🙂

      • Rae Ann from northern Michigan...now in Minnesota... says:

Hi Pat~I’m in a tiny town in west central MN and was watching WCCO…I’m thinking of Susan and Joe and all the people going to be in the Nemo storm area and hoping everyone stays home and stays safe…

        • Rae Ann from northern Michigan...now in Minnesota... says:

Susan~That’s it…it does get to seem “normal” and people do just handle it…just like the people down south handle those high temperatures in the summer…they run from their air conditioned houses to their air conditioned cars to their air conditioned work places…

  93. Happy Anniversary, Susan and Joe! It looks like you have a very snowy, cozy and romantic weekend in store for you. It makes me think of the Christmas song, “Let it Snow”…hope you’ve brought some corn for poppin’ as you sit by your fire! I’m so excited to see your finished book and just love the little bits you are letting us see. I really really love your doodle page. I’m a watercolor artist and have my own doodle page by my work, but I like yours much better! 🙂 Your sketch of Beatrix is lovely. I must tell you that I finally broke down and bought myself a pair of Rose Chintz cups and saucers. I have a set of the Johnson Brothers Summer Chintz, but Rose Chintz has my name on it, so how could I resist! Stay safe and stay warm! ♥

It’s really Romantic when both of you now look like each other! Yes? No? Have many more! Looking forward to Williard yeah yeah yeah!

  95. Betsy says:

What a beautiful post. Between your Anniversary and the celebration of Valentines Day your house is the love and romance capital. You are in my thoughts with the blizzard heading your way. When hurricane Sandy hit we lost power for 5 days and it wasn’t fun, it was so cold. But then I heard what the people in New Jersey and New York were going through, some still, and I realized how lucky we were. My dear husband boiled the water for Earl Grey on our gas grill. What a man! Stay warm and if you can keep us posted as to how you are. Nothing long of course, we so want your new book and are counting the days until we can pre-order!

  96. Diane C in IL says:

Happy Anniversary!! 1-2 feet of snow is quite a bit. I bet you’d get some fantastic pictures of everything. Your fireplace will keep you both warm and cozy. It looks wonderful on the blog. I can’t wait for my first Willard, your 1st of the year. It will truly be a special Valentine.

  97. Kristi says:

Another lovely post; thank you! Happy Anniversary to you and Joe and hugs and kisses for the kitties!

  98. Rosemary says:

The picture of you and Joe is a beauty! Lovely couple, still, after all these years. Congratulations on your anniversary.
A blizzard…sounds like a time to stock up and Joe has the RIGHT idea. Popcorn is all you need, right? I hope that all of you New Englanders will stay home and be safe and warm with no power outages and plenty of firewood. From my perspective it sounds pretty exciting but only if everyone is out of danger. When I lived in NY and we had snow days from teaching 2nd grade…I would bake bread. Always. Keep us posted on your snowfall. Wishing you the best.

  99. Claire in Atlanta says:

    Happy anniversary!
Can’t wait for the book. Stay safe during the storm.

  100. Harriett says:

It is romantic. I love it! I love snow! We are apparently in for some here on Long Island as well. Take care. Stay warm. Keep the candles close by. We shall survive and be better for it. Recalling Governor Malloy’s comments at Newtown. We welcome the snow and will think of the children. Make angels and remember. Stop the gun violence in this country. As a seventies hippie: make love, not war. Happy Annivesary, Susan and Joe!
