WE MADE IT HOME!

Yes, we made it home.  But I thought you might enjoy some New York MUSICA and a few big city scenes before we go back to small world reality.

going home

We caught the Island Home for our return trip on the MOST beautiful day.  I must say, the weather for our whole trip was brilliant!  Cool enough for a sweater, warm enough for basking.

leaving The City

Here we are tooling along, we’ve just turned out of the city onto the FDR Drive going north past the east river toward Connecticut.

going home

Lots of I-95, the Connecticut Turnpike is very very ugly, which I’ve always found hard to understand because Connecticut is so beautiful, how did they let this hideous road run right along next to the shore???  I don’t know! (venting time)  But since Joe was born and raised in Connecticut he has this other “secret” road to take us on instead.  It’s not a very big secret, and it’s not a very big road, it’s called the Merritt Parkway.

Merritt Parkway

It’s famous for the beautiful bridges and overpasses built beginning in the 1930’s. Each one is designed in a different architectural style, all designed by the same person, and all built by the WPA — which it would be nice if we had again!  This country got some of it’s prettiest roads and buildings because of the WPA.

WPA

My favorite part about the bridges on the Merritt Parkway is that they are all too low for trucks. Wizardry in bridge building is what I call it. Hence, no trucks on this road!

Merritt Parkway

It’s so civilized, 37 miles of just-beautiful ~ it’s actually in the National Register of Historic Places!

Merritt Parkway

Like a street in Central Park.

Nature in NY

That’s not to say there is no “nature” in The City.  Just the opposite.  Besides the miracle that is Central Park where the city goes to drink in the trees and the sky and have picnics and play ball and run and walk, we had our own little miracle of nature ~ Joe took this picture of a dragonfly that landed just over our head where we were sitting at the time on the 16th floor of our hotel (the Affinia Shelburne, at Lexington and 37th, BTW). That is some wandering dragonfly.

16th floor

See the string of lights?  That’s where the dragon fly alighted.  This is the top floor of our hotel, where, on beautiful evenings like this one . . .

16th floor

They serve cocktails in this “room” with a view.

Joe

Joe loved it up here and so did I. Next time we want to bring our binoculars!

view from up top

From our stools we could feel the breeze (remember, we are still on an island) and look off in all directions, and down onto “roof gardens” such as this one.  These people must have worked late or were out of town, because no one in their right mind would have been indoors on an evening like this if they could have helped themselves.

Friday night party in NY

Just across from our rooftop was this interesting old building, with open roof and arched windows and green growing up inside the walls and lots of people inside celebrating TGIF.

the old and the new

Even though we’re on the 16th floor, we had to look up at these two.  It’s so wonderful to see the old architecture alongside the new.

night lights

Even more interesting when the sun goes down and the lights begin to come on.

night

And of course, right from our stools we could see the Empire State Building, all lit up.  Green this time.  The building lights up in all colors depending on the event being celebrated at the time.

Empire State building

Green was to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Police Athletic League, but they change it for the Fourth of July, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, for almost any celebration imaginable.

Les Halles

Saturday we had lunch in this wonderful French restaurant called  Les Halles (pronounced Lay Ahl).

music-note

Les Halles

The food was wonderful!!!  I had a Salad Niçoise and Joe had Steak au Poivre and both could not have been more delicious.

We took the whole day off.

Taxi

After lunch we hopped into a taxi and went to . . .

ABC Home

One of my favorite stores in New York called ABC Home ~  which is seven stories of gloriosity ~ everything you need to help you remember what a wondrous world this is.

ABC Home

It’s like a museum because everything is so artsy and special and one-of-a-kindish, but better than a museum because if you see something you simply can-not live without, you don’t have to just cry inside, you can buy it!

shop

They have beaded horses, elephants and lions, which I know everyone needs.  But that’s not the point, the point for me at ABC Home is looking and ooohing and aaaahing and taking pictures, and these fanciful colorful creatures are perfect for that!  I may not need them, but I still think they are wonderful and appreciate the creativity that made them.

abc homeEverything is artistically and carefully arranged. Someone really cares about the details in this store. This lamp is so fun, little pricks of light come out of it as you move around it.  The copper pots?  Yes, I know.

home cooking

abc home

They even make timers, whisks, and potato mashers look good.

abc home

There’s all kinds of beautiful bedding and towels, a whole floor of it, and lovely fluttery curtains too.

seven floors of heaven

And every so often, for no reason except to pleasure the eye of the beholder, eye candy like this.  They are real roses and smelled wonderful. The eye and the nose were pleasured to the nth.

pink border

abc home

Vintage dinnerware!  Silver candle sticks and serving pieces.  They have kept away from the dull, the humdrum and the mundane.

abc home

It’s anything but. They had antique and new drinking glasses in every color, some of them paper thin.  See the ceiling? The whole building is in an old warehouse.

salts

They believe in art . . . these little salts! Everything is so different.

abc home

And if you need a wooden-handled pestle and mortar or a sparkly carafe, you have come to the right place.

abc home

Lots of furniture too, in all styles, sofas and chairs, everything . . . useful and original too, like this cart on wheels.

baby department

Yes, they have a baby department that is truly hard to get out of.

flower border SB

little girl dresses

I just wished I could squeeze into one of these little girl dresses!  I would take the one with the big red polka dots.

Make me a child again

dinosaur department

Of course, they have the dinosaur division.

our big purchase

I know you want to know what we bought.  The only thing I needed was to fill up with inspiration and beauty and there was plenty cameraof that.  I just so enjoyed looking at everything and taking pictures.  The jewelry was made by designers, it was delicate and just gorgeous ~ I could never have chosen just one thing.  But, this  is what I bought.  It’s for asparagus and pasta among other things and we needed it.  Did I tell you I am pretty practical (not very practical, but pretty practical)?  Unless I need it, or I can’t live without it, I try not to buy it.

Xavier's new clothes

But I needed this hipster charcoal onesie and could not go home without it ~ for our new baby boy (my great nephew) Xavier.  The pottery X has a hole in the back; it can be hung on the wall.  A cool hip New York baby outfit for my Central Coast of California Baby is on it’s way.

baby

King Cole Room

We had drinks at King Cole Room, at the St. Regis Hotel, a place we accidentally discovered one lovely rainy night many years back when we could not find a cab.  We’ve always come back to see the amazing Maxfield Parrish Mural over the bar.

George Washington

We spent the morning at The Morgan Library and Museum.  Saw lots of paintings of romantic landscapes and other amazing and beautiful things ~ such as this.  This IS George Washington!  This life mask was molded right on his face in 1785 and the miracle is now we could stand in front of it and take a picture of it. That’s George Washington!  Can you believe it!?

Imagination

The Morgan

One of the ceilings in Morgan Library.  Talk about filling your inspiration cup . . . there is nothing like beauty and history and . . .

The City

the music of the night.

Mas Musica? Cuz we’re goin’ home . . .

passing ships

And here we are on the boat, heading home . . . passing our sister ship . . . skirting Old Cape Cod . . .

the sea

land ho

The light was especially beautiful as we drew closer to the island and the sun was getting low.

into the harbor

Here we are arriving into the harbor.  You can tell the season has changed, the sailboats are coming back!  (They put them away during the winter and the harbor is empty. Sailboats with flags flying are a harbinger of the summer season.)

cats waiting

flowers

Yes, we had our people waiting for us.  As we are emptying the car, they watch.  They were adorable, wriggling around on the floor to be petted, which we did happily.  Elizabeth and Diana took such good care of them.  While unpacking, we turned around in time to see the moon coming up . . .

the moon

summer night

yard sale

flowers

The next morning, Sunday, real life, we walked along quiet shady streets over to Elizabeth’s new house because they were having a yard sale in her driveway.  From left, that’s Daisy, she’s the darling daughter of Mimi holding the whale, then Amy in the stripes, I’m behind Amy, then Diana, and up front, that’s Elizabeth.  Elizabeth’s new house is on the left.

downtown

We walked downtown to have breakfast at the Waterside Market . . . then we window-shopped up Main Street.  I heard Mimi say, “Hey isn’t that your house?”  And I looked in the window, and by gum, yes it is!  Someone had painted it and the painting was for sale in the window of this gallery!  Pretty good eh? We thought so!

home

So then we went back home.  And put the flag away until Independence Day, once again making ourselves incognito.

ready to play!

And played with Jack, watered the garden, did laundry, made tea, and sat down to write to you.

teacup  flowers

And here we are, ready to begin life again.  Only twelve days from today and we go back out to Connecticut to Gladys Taber’s House!  Can’t believe it!  And the next time I post, it will be the celebration for our three years of blogging, five years of Facebook with fun giveaways for my Girlfriends!

heart of the home Hope you enjoyed New York!  It’s always fun to have you along.  ‘Course I think of you with every click of the camera!  Rabbit-Rabbit Girlfriends.  Happy June! XOXO

June! Rabbit Rabbit!

You made me smile, cuz I enjoy the Merritt Parkway too! It’s a hidden gem that I love to travel on when we go to Connecticut to visit my sisters.
The mask of George Washington’s face was just amazing too!
Thanks for posting such great photos! Your blog is always a joy to visit! 🙂

  7. barbara miller says:

thank you for the trip to new York ! I needed a pick me up today. we did some island hopping out our way…orcas island and san juan island in state of Washington . made living on the islands seem like a dream. [I grew up in rhode island…neither a road nor an island…maybe I felt cheated !] thanks! b

  8. Jack is asking, “Did you bring me anything??”
And Girl is thinking, “Ho hum, the world travelers passing through again…”

    • sbranch says:

We always bring Jack the same thing, a big long card filled with all colors of ponytail bands from the drug store. Girl is thinking, Ho Hum. You are right — but she loves us, I know because she lets me hug her.

  9. Jack says:

I always get the impression that Jack may have swallowed the fork that served his cat food!

  10. Pat Johnson from Paso Robles, CA says:

Oh thank you so much for the trip to New York. It was wonderful to be on this travel as I sat in my little cabin in Newport, Washington. And the tour of the museum – including being introduced to George Washington -you know he was quite a good looking man (not as cute as Joe though (: ) Once again the pic of the Empire State Building was GRAND. And I loved loved loved the Maxwell Parrish mural!!!! Haven’t seen any of his work in forever! And then home – to friends and those two little faces just waiting for your return!! Saying “thank you for the trip” just doesn’t seem like enough – YOU ARE WONDERFUL!! XXXOOO

  11. WA Judy says:

Did you not buy the painting of your house????? It’s beautiful. It would be hard for me to leave it behind…..

    • sbranch says:

We didn’t. We have the house, it seemed like too much. I should go back and see how much it is. You’re right.

      • I like your versions better. 🙂

      • Laura Anne says:

If you don’t end up purchasing it, I surely would love to get it! It is beautiful.. What gallery is it in?

      • Jack says:

My take on the painting was, if you felt the need or desire for such a painting, you would simply paint one ~ in accordance with the Stewart Creed. You know, if we wanted something, we made it!

        • sbranch says:

          Yes!! 🙂

          • carmel says:

Absolutely! I recall that your parents made your vanity table and all sorts of things including that magical circus cake. It is a lovely painting, but honestly, I’d rather have one you’ve painted. It would have charm and maybe include the gardens, etc. The Stewart Creed is an excellent reminder for me too! Thanks, Jack.

          • sbranch says:

            LOL Stewart Creed!

          • Barbara from Wolverine Lake MI says:

that is so true, you could paint it if you wanted to… as a painter did you see imperfections in this painting of your home, was it true to life, or did they take “artistic license”? I couldn’t have passed it up! of course no one has ever painted my house….

          • sbranch says:

I have painted it . . . it’s actually the logo on my business cards. Joe thought the front door wasn’t quite the same, but I thought it was pretty much a perfect rendition.

  12. JoAnne Daniels says:

Susan — it’s always nice to be taken along on your trips with Joe. Just like
us girlfriends were tucked inside your pocket — thank you for always thinking of us with photos of the grand and the small (dragon fly). Some day, I’ll have to
    try out the Merritt Parkway!
    JoAnne

    • sbranch says:

If you have the choice, this is the way to go!

      • You must have hit it at the right time because the few times we’ve taken it the traffic was terrible!

        • sbranch says:

It was Saturday, so maybe that’s a good day . . . although we took the Merritt into the City too, on a Thursday, and that was OK too. I’m sure, due to its location, there must be lots of times it’s bumper to bumper, but that’s also true for 95. At least if you’re going nowhere, you’re going under trees and next to lawns.

          • I think we must be a traffic magnetic. We quit going through NYC to get to CT to visit my brother because we’d always get snarled in traffic at the bridge! #%#@ One of the times when our boys were younger it was taking so long we had to exit the first possible place to find a restroom. We had no idea where we were, got hopelessly lost, but saw a police station and stopped to ask for directions. The amazing thing was it turned out we were very near an entrance ramp that took us past the traffic jam! We could not have planned that. So we always go up through PA now and cross way north into CT. It’s a little longer, but with the traffic we always seem to hit, it turns out to take less time that way. Living in the DC area for 45 years I got “trafficked out” years ago! Give me a country road any day and I’ll take it!

          • sbranch says:

Us too, always looking for the alternative — even if it takes longer.

  13. Pam says:

So glad you had such a good time in New York, but it’s always nice to come home isn’t it. I’m storing away all the info you put in your blog as we are pondering (haven’t got any further than pondering at the moment) a trip to New England to see the autumn leaves. Lots of planning to be done but it’s very exciting 🙂

    • sbranch says:

You would love it, it’s quite amazing in the fall! Of course I haven’t been THERE in the fall, so I’m not sure how they compare.

  14. Niki says:

Did you know…..The Empire State Building’s website has a full listing of each month’s lighting and what the colors mean.

  15. Niki says:

Whoops! I just realized you included the link!

  16. Connie Turnbull says:

Thank you for taking me along to New York! Your photos are terrific – I feel like I’m right there with you & Joe.

  17. Jennifer M says:

    Susan

Such a joy to hear your stories of New York. This past March I took my daughter to New York City for the first time. She went with her choir and was able to perform at Carnegie Hall the night of her 14th birthday. What a treasure it was to be with her her first visit–seeing Carnegie Hall, seeing Wicked performed on Broadway, viewing the Statue of Liberty and all of the other touristy things that we do. I can’t wait to go back with her again. It is such a joy to find additional treasures in the city as you have. Thanks for the information. I’ll be sure to add these to our next “New York bucket list” as my daughter likes to refer. Thank you again for your inspiration and your confirmation of my belief in the “little blessings” of life. God Bless.

  18. Rebecca Hejka says:

Happy June to you too Susan! Thanks for bringing us along! What a lovely trip! Merritt Parkway is beautiful, who knew? And what a great roof top spot for drinks! ABC Home looks like a wonderful place for an Artist Date! I’m sure you’re always ready to go back to your Island and see the kitties!

  19. Stephen says:

I understand you call your fans “girlfriends”. I supposed I don’t quite fit the norm as I am a 43 year old man who so enjoys your daily adventures and artwork. Thanks for always brightening my day!

    • sbranch says:

I know, I should probably change that because we do love our guy friends — it just started off that way and now it’s a habit! Thank you for writing Stephen. I love your name, it’s my brother’s name too, spelled the same way.

      • Stephen says:

Hee hee…I don’t mind being an honorary “girlfriend” so to speak. I told my wife of my possible new status and she had a giggle.

        • sbranch says:

Goodie, because secretly, that’s exactly what you are. Honorary! 🙂

          • Stephen says:

I promise to quite pestering but had to ask, have you ever read 84, Charing Cross Road by Helen Hanff or seen the film with Anne Bancroft? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/84,_Charing_Cross_Road
If you haven’t, I think you would quite enjoy either (or both!). It’s so evocative of the era, old Blighty (London, actually) and literature. It’s one of my favourite stories about some of my favourite things (England and books).

          • sbranch says:

I have read it, and it was on TV just a couple of days ago and I watched it again! Sad. But wonderful story.

  20. Shannon (Pennsylvania) says:

TWELVE DAYS!!!! Happy, happy, joy, joy 🙂 I’m deciding which books to bring to have you sign…I have lots of them, but will not be greedy with your time. I’m packing my Book of Days, which I started using as a journal last June 1 and just finished up May 31, for sure. I started a second one yesterday. Also my Autumn, and maybe the little Lenox china tray that goes with your jam pot set. My June FOGT newsletter came today…a Susan Branch silent auction! So excited! Hugs!

  21. Joan S says:

What a wonderful tour of NYC for your girlfriends. And, one of my very favorite pieces of Mancini music. Thanks for sharing your trip, I will make notes for my next visit.

  22. Rita Baker says:

Wish there was a “Like” button on this blog. Beautiful photos, descriptions, I feel as though I’m right along with you on your travels. Glad you arrived home safely.

  23. I’m so glad you are home on your island and incognito again. While it’s fun to go on trips, there is no place quite like home. I’m with Judy Garland (maybe I should have said Dorothy).

  24. Sylvia in Seattle says:

What a beautiful post! That ABC Home store is a wonderful thing to know about . . . I’m going to have lots of fun coming back to click on all the links. Love all the stunning views, the quotes so apt. I feel like I just took a little trip myself 🙂 Thank you Susan.

  25. Rae Ann R...back in Michigan...forever... says:

Thank you again for your wonderful ideas for visiting NYC…did you take any pictures at the book signing???…the leaves are finally visible here in northern Michigan…Lily of the Valley and Bleeding Hearts have tiny blooms…no lilacs yet, but soon we hope…the past two days have been 80*…the warmest we have been this year…do you have “midge flies”???…they have been hatching here for almost a week now…pesky little critters, but at least they don’t bite…xoxo…

    • sbranch says:

I did, or actually, Joe did, and I forgot to put them up! We don’t have midges, but we have no-see-ums down at the beach at sunset and they make mincemeat of me.

  26. Susan on Bainbridge Island in Wa. state says:

Always so fun to go away for a while, but the glory is coming HOME!….. always.

  27. Sara says:

Thank you so much, Susan, for your little tour of the Big Apple. It’s been 55 years since I was there for a UN Seminar with 100 other high schoolers from across the country. I think I might be due for a return visit, especially since you took us to the ABC Home store. I could spend days there! I love the outfit you got your wee one–it’s SO New York! As for George, my, he really was a handsome man! I had no idea. My favorite part of your trip was seeing the furry loves of your life looking through the screen when you got home. 🙂

I am still on cloud nine that my new gardenia plant is loaded with buds, and I have my first bloom! I can’t keep my face out of it! And the other bit of good news is that my wisteria is NOT dead as originally feared because of the awful winter here in Northern Indiana but is sending out its delicate tendrils like mad. I was so heartbroken at the thought of losing it, especially since it took 8 years to bloom the first time and has only bloomed twice. But when I looked up Saturday and saw those lovely leaves floating in the breeze, I did a happy dance right then and there! I am so easily pleased.

Thanks for sharing your trip with us, Susan. You are a gem!

    Sara

    • sbranch says:

My understanding is that it takes real work to kill a wisteria. There was one at Joe’s restaurant some years back that was planted in the most unfortunate place, right where the delivery trucks came in. It was hit, rubbed, sideswiped, mashed, run-over, whacked, crashed into and broken off. Nothing would kill it, it grew back, made flowers and defied reality every year. I have heard that if you can’t get a wisteria to bloom you should hit it with a shovel. I can’t imagine such a thing, but that’s what people say. I know just how you feel, it’s wonderful to think that things you’ve lost have survived.

And yes, that’s what I thought, George Washington was a doll!

      • I think I’ll try this on my lilac bush. Not even one bloom this year. And I think because the bush has grown so large it was blocking the sun from getting on my climbing rose which has no buds on it at all!

        • sbranch says:

We had such a tough winter, all my hydrangeas look terrible so far, lots of dead branches coming through.

          • The one I planted about 10 years ago is the same way, but the one that came with the house–a white flowered one–and must be over 40 years old at least, looks as great as it ever has.

  28. carmel says:

Thanks so much for the lovely grand tour! Loved everything. Wow, how great to see what George Washington really looked like. He has a softer look than all the paintings I’ve seen. It was so helpful to read about the mask on the link you provided. Most people don’t know what a great lady Martha Washington was – another woman of substance. I know more details of her life only because as a teacher I learned along with my students as I tried to find out more about her. Lucky Xavier – what a wonderful family he’s part of now. Enriching, fun trip but there’s no place like home. Thanks again to you and Joe for the ride.

  29. Ann says:

Love the Morgan museum and NYC. We always stay in a lovely hotel on 35th st. Didn’t you feel a little weird about seeing your house in the window?

  30. Judy in Nashville says:

Welcome home! Thanks for the beautiful tour. JA

  31. West Hall says:

Did you miss the services for F.Patrick Gregory?

  32. charlotte says:

How wonderful Susan. All of it. I always feel like I am along for the trip with you. Your pictures are great. You find such interesting things. I loved the road with all the bridges. No trucks…that’s my kind of road. I bet your people were happy to have you home too.

  33. What a cute welcome kitty committee you have! A-dorable! I so enjoyed seeing the pics of the ABC Home store in NYC. Wow. Just lovely. There is so much to do and see and taste and it sounds line you and Joe took full advantage of it. Kudos! Glad to know you are safely home and looking forward to your next outing in CT. I cannot wait to hear all about that one.

  34. Gloria Dotzler says:

How nice that you could mix business with all that fun, too. I can’t even imagine what the streets of New York must be like, looks a bit intimidating to this small town gal.
I love the baby gifts for Xavier, all in lovely grey! And of course the practical utensil which I bet you will use a lot.
I have to tell you I have finally found pear cider in my local liquor store and it it such a nice light summery drink, love it.
Adventures are fun but it’s always good to come home, especially to the kitties! And a yard sale, too. We will be having ours in a few weeks, we call it “Gloria and Friends” since it’s held in my garage. We make a party of it, hang Chinese lanterns from the rafters, music on the radio and doughnuts from our hometown bakery.
Yes, summer is really here in Minnesota!

    • sbranch says:

So happy you are enjoying the pear cider! It’s good! Nice garage sale! More like a summer party.

    • Cathy McCann says:

Hi Gloria — I swear, one of these years, I’m just going to make a road trip from Indiana and make it to your sale! It always looks like such fun, with great treasures! Have a ball — Cath

  35. Oops. I meant to say “like” instead on “line”. I read it over too. Must be time for new glasses….(that’s my story and I’m sticking to it). 🙂

  36. Christine Perica says:

Love, love, love New York City! Thank you, Susan, for the fun tour and hidden spots for drinks and food! Glad you are back on the island because this is such a wonderful time of the year on your little piece of heaven. Enjoy the next 10 days, especially your morning walks!

  37. Penny Harrison in Oceanside, CA says:

Rabbit-Rabbit, Happy June! Thank you for the trip to New York! Read this while watching “Till the Clouds Rolls By” 1945 – story of Jerome Kern and his music – perfect background for pictures of New York!

    • sbranch says:

      I watched it too!

      • Rosanne Murphy (Oregon) says:

Me too! Wasn’t the singing and dancing wonderful? So fun to see the MGM parade of stars, and a young Frank the grand finale! Just loved being in NYC, especially having a drink with you and Joe at the rooftop bar in the midst of the skyline! I would love to see what George looked like when he smiled. He was so handsome!

        • sbranch says:

Me too, but probably the wax on the teeth stopped any thought of that! Yes, the singing and dancing was terrific! All the best stars!

  38. Peggy Cooper says:

I grew up in New York, but I never heard of the Morgan Museum. Looks fabulous! If I make it back there again some day, I’ll definitely check it out. And all the other places you visited too! Thanks for taking us along.

  39. Suzanne Capolingua says:

    OMG Susan,
how did you not purchase that beautiful replica of your house….I could not have passed it up… Love your life…

    • sbranch says:

Only because I have a stack of paintings here on the floor that I can’t put up because instead of walls in this house, they built windows!

  40. ahh such a fun trip – I love it when you take your blogger fans away with you both.
I smiled seeing your crescent moon opposite to what ours is here in the southern hemisphere and I had to take a double dip look at your June header of your calender as I had only just turned my over this morning (late I know) – me thinks you might of given us a sneak peek into 2015. Love Leanne downunder in Nz xx

  41. Francine Werlinger says:

My parents and I went to New York when I was 10. I loved it!! I told them to send me $50.00 a week, cause I was staying!

  42. Becky in the mountains of West Virginia. says:

Yes! I loved seeing New York again and fun in the Home Store. Love traveling with you it is so relaxing. Thanks!

  43. Susan, this entire post was so very, very great to read, but that George Washington life mask simply knocked me out! Wow. Let me spell it backwards: woW!!!

Adding Henry Mancini and Patti Page to the mix was like putting double-thick frosting on a cake.

    • sbranch says:

Love how you can spell forward and backward! 🙂 LOL (let me see if I can spell that backward!)

  44. Linda T. from Maine says:

Hello Susan, Thanks for the Big Apple tour. Looks way to busy for me and scary. I like it The way life is in Maine. Love the pics you going home… That’s what I’m talking about. Ocean, the smell of the ocean ,the breeze hitting your face, the wide open waters, the people, just thoses type of surroundings do me ok.Thanks for taking me home with you once again. Have a beautiful night.

  45. Elaine in Toronto says:

OMG, how happy Girl and Jack are to welcome you home and how cute they are sitting side by side but still a bit aloof. Adorable little onesie for Xavier. Aren’t baby clothes fun to buy? You should paint a picture of your house or maybe Joe could, you know, in your spare time, lol. Thanks for sharing your trip to New York.

  46. Marsha MacLean says:

What a terrific trip to New York! It has been many years since I was there, but I know I would feel right at home if I went back. Even though I love my country home, I do love the city, too, so thanks for taking us along!

  47. Sharon C. says:

Beautiful pictures, as always! Thank you so much for the eye-candy!

  48. Betty says:

Ah, what a wonderful visit to New York. I could almost feel I was there with you. Loved the roof top photos. What a beautiful evening!
Thank you for taking us along.
Great to see your girl-friends at home, on such a lovely sunny day.
You can’t guess I’m missing summer, can you?!

  49. Barbara in NC says:

Thank you for sharing your happy trip with all of us! I always laugh at the kitty’s expressions! You can tell I have always had cats because I feel they talk to you without saying a word. I always look forward to your blogs…thank you!

  50. Tawni urrutia says:

    Welcome home sweet Susan!
When I was a kid, my Mimi loved Merv Griffin and watched him EVERY day at 3:00. I sat next to her on the sofa watching Merv and all of his guests. I knew he was VERY important because he was on the one dollar bill!! Lol!!
I have a secret(ok, not so secret) crush on Anthony Bourdain, I want to eat at Les Halles sooo bad! My husband’s eaten there twice and said it’s fantastic! Thank you for another marvelous post!!

  51. Karen (Running Springs, CA) says:

    Susan –
Thank you for your wonderful story-telling talents. I was so happy to be transported to NYC & your adventures, while awaiting my turn at the DMV (ick). Just as I was finished…my number was called. It was magical!

  52. Christine says:

All so lovely, thank you for sharing! I’m grateful to tag along, and grateful when you are home again!
Could the June calendar page at the end of the post be next June’s deskpad calendar page? I really missed it this year and can’t wait to enjoy it again!

    • sbranch says:

Well that one is all designed and at the printers right now. Remind me and maybe I can use it again for the 2016 calendar. (see why I never know what year it is? 🙂 )

  53. Karen Saunders says:

You know, when you stop and think about it…..Central Park has to be one of the most expensive pieces of real estate in the world. And I always think of that wonderful old building in ‘Greencard.’ PS The stone building behind, (or in front) of Elizabeth’s house is fantastic!!!!! Is that a church???

    • sbranch says:

That’s why I call it a miracle. You would think they’d sell chunks of it off, but they don’t ~ in a world where money is everything, it’s a huge testament to doing the right thing. Yes, E. lives across the street from that church.

  54. Nancy Kilner says:

Love, love the King Cole Bar. Wonderful drinks, snacks they serve to your table, and great people watching! Feels so “New York” ! Glad you discovered it!

  55. Barbara (WA) says:

Wow, I have never heard of that George Washington life mask! To look at him and take his photo, magical.

  56. Debby says:

Dear Susan, RUN don’t walk , back to buy the picture of your house!!! Don’t you want to know who painted it and why?? Hurry! Put it above the fireplace, and show us a picture of it. Love the kittie pics! Debby

  57. Marysol says:

    Bienvenidos Susan y Joe.

Thank you for taking me along. I’ve never been to ‘ABC Home’ but the vicarious shopping trip was especially fun – I bought one of ‘everything.’

Please, nuzzle up to your furry people for us.

  58. Brenda says:

When I can’t be in NYC, then I want to read of others’ trips to NYC. Thanks for that, Susan. I see I’m not the only one who knows about the ABC store.

  59. Linda in Glendale says:

I love that you spotted a dragonfly 16 floors up! I had no idea they fle i the wild blue yonder. I also did not know about the Merritt Pkwy bridges being different architecturally. I’ll have to look them up, Thank you.

  60. Loved the post of your visit and home coming, but how did the book signing go? That painting of your house is really good. I wonder if she knows who you are? Fun post.

    • sbranch says:

It went great! I should have put a picture up with the rest of them, I just forgot with all those glittery ABC pictures! But it went really well — met many wonderful people and at the end of the hour and a half, three hundred books were gone!

  61. Vickie in Olympia says:

You know just how to take the scary out of traveling. Thanks for bringing us the details of the best places. Places that make the big city seem small enough to be something I could enjoy, too 🙂

  62. Sharon Provence says:

I love all the details and pictures in your blogs!! I always feel like I am on vacation too!! Thank you!! Sooo enjoyable!!

  63. Teresa G., Lafayette, CA. says:

Had to laugh at the expressions on Jack and Girl’s faces! Priceless! They look like irritated parents with their where-have-you-been faces. I think you had some explaining to do. Loved the pictures of New York! I had no idea there was a Maxfield Parrish painting there! Have you seen it’s cousin, The Pied Piper, over in San Francisco at The Palace Hotel? I made a quick note to my list of “Things to Do When I Go Back to NY” that Old King Cole is a must. Thanks for sharing that!

  64. Karen says:

I just got a huge kick out of that shot in ABC Home of my parents’ silver cigarette lighter that sat on their coffee table all through the 1950’s. Those were the days ….puff, puff….

  65. Anna Rendell says:

Those pink copper-lidded pots – oh my! How sweet! They would go perfectly in my pink and grey kitchen =)

  66. Mary of PA. says:

Thanks Susan for the tour, it was great.
    Have a good evening.

  67. Hope Tarrant says:

Hi Susan! We were just visiting Martha’s Vineyard this past week, it was on our Bucket list for years and years, and your blog and lovely description of it in your books made me want to go more than ever. It was a beautiful day and took a stroll down a few streets close to downtown and what did we come across? A beautiful house with a big ol’ flag hanging on it! It looked familiar…could it be? Yep! There was the darling picket fence with the straw hat. 🙂 I was giddy with delight as my daughters and husband just chuckled. I didn’t stay long or wander into the yard at all, but we did take a picture sitting on your front steps, I hope you don’t mind. We didn’t want to frighten anyone or get arrested, haha! Only later did I check the current blog and see that you were in NYC. Oh my, I might have just given you a big hug if I had seen you strolling around town! Thank you sweet Susan, for the delight you give to others, you are truly a blessing to so many.

  68. Cindy Maulin says:

hi susan!! Welcome home!! I just love traveling the globe with you and Joe!! <3. Haven't been to NY in years but I keep swearing that I am going to take my husband because I know that there are things about that place that he would just love … (even though he is a small-town-at-heart-guy and totally loves the West)…..It is such a unique place…..so glad to had a terrific time…I have a friend that loves that ABC Home store too…never been but it looks like a combination of Crate and Barrel, Restoration Hardware , Pottery Barn and my local antique mall..what's not to love !?!?!?! Turned my calendar over today…melt my heart at your dads hands…have always loved that photo…precious..I hope he is doing well..been thinking about him…Am keeping my granddaughter ( 3 years old) for a few days and today I found her at the piano playing her little heart out using her favorite book…The Summer Book, as her musical inspiration. Luckily my phone was handy so I snapped a pic and sent you a tweet…hopefully you either have seen it or will…. She loves that book because of the paintings; especially the How To Have A Tea Party page… from the eyes of babes!!!! Nice to see all is well… bet you are excited about the Gladys Tabor visit….what a thrill…drag us along!!! take care and thanks for the beautiful daily dose of smiles…love, cindy xoxo

  69. Nancy B says:

Hi, Susan. I really enjoyed the views from your hotel in the previous post. So romantic! I read in the newspaper that another famous lady was at your book event in NYC. Did you see her? I’ll bet her book isn’t as much fun as yours.

I must mention that the tribute you paid your dad on the June calendar page is precious. Such a lovely daughter he has.

Have a wonderful time in Connecticut!
    Nancy (from Bakersfield)

    • sbranch says:

There were lots of famous people there, who are you thinking of, Nancy?

      • Nancy B says:

Hillary C. has a new book she is promoting. Anyway, I thought it was the same event. . .

        • sbranch says:

Ohhhh HER…I didn’t see any craziness so I’m almost sure she must not have been there, or maybe another day. Otherwise we probably would have had to find our way through media to get anywhere.

  70. Carolyn says:

Hi Susan, This post was so much fun. I felt like I went on a mini-vacation with all the nice photos. I must say, that is such a nice photo of Joe. He looks so serene and he looks like he is in love with the one who took his picture. Having said that, I hope you took that picture Susan!!

  71. Ginny Petitt says:

Always love your blog notes! They are so heart warming and the Musica just adds so much! Was in N.Y for the 1st time at the beginning of April. Did all the tourist things and I am glad we did( only there 3 days – not nearly long enough) like the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the 9/11 Memorial. We did go up to the top of the Empire State building, but it was raining and foggy and couldn’t really see anything. We were at the beginning of a 16 day trip – after NY went to Ireland for 8 days, then London for 3 days. Some day hope to go back and see the things you mentioned. We were just in too much of a hurry to really take our time and enjoy everything. We did eat some wonderful food, though. It sounds nice to be close enough to go multiple times and really enjoy the out of the way places. Thanks for the pictures and the information. You always make it feel like we are right there with you!

    • sbranch says:

Sometimes the first trip just gives me a lay of the land so that I know better what I want to do for the next time.

  72. Joanne Wood says:

Oh My! I clicked on your going home musica — and there was Old Cape Cod by Patti Page. And I finally got to go there a couple of summers ago with my daughters. It was wonderful. I’d love to go back. I have been obsessively reading about the history of the area along with Boston, Concord etc. “My people” hitched a ride on the ship Fortune and the ship Anne. I wanted to sing Old Cape Cod when we got there, but I got voted down. So I sang it in the shower. Thanks for providing one of my favorite songs. I enjoyed your visit to Grand Rapids.

  73. Diana says:

What a nice little trip to NYC! I think I must go to ABC Home! Some day, but thank you for taking me there for a preview! Lovely photos and I would LOVE having a cocktail on the roof and cozy meals. We just got back from Seattle and had just gorgeous weather while there. So different than my Midwest plains. Went to the Empress Hotel in Victoria and had afternoon tea! Such a treat. Love learning about new places! Glad you are back safe and sound. Can’t wait for what you have in store for us! Thanks for your kindnesses.

  74. Linda Pintarell says:

Loved traveling with you on this trip and thanks for all the hints on places to visit in NYC. I added them to my list. Me…I just returned from a month in France – mostly Paris – and was happy to see a recommendation for a French restaurant in Les Halles. I can honestly say that Salad Nicoise was my lunch choice many times in Paris – love it! First week did an educational program to learn about Paris; 2nd week train trip to south of France to visit a friend; last two weeks rented an apartment in Paris through vrbo.com and just enjoyed the city. Great fun! A dream…and now its checked off my bucket list.

  75. Luci from Virginia says:

Dear Susan , Joe & Kitties,
So happy that you arrived home safely from your trip. Enjoyed the souvenirs that you brought home to us with your blog post. Loved the musica. I remember listening to Patti Page sing Old Cape Cod on the radio and singing along with her when I was a child. She had such a lovely voice . It fit perfect with the ferry bringing you both home. The fruit pictures with the Mancini music were beautiful, but I still visualize Audrey Hepburn looking in the windows at Tiffanys when I hear it. The pictures of Central Park were just so beautiful except for the one of the horse that collapsed in the park. Thank you Frederick Law Olmsted for designing it and many other spaces across this country for all of us to enjoy . I loved the picture of the terrace next to your hotel. What a lovely place to sit and have cocktails, appetizers or a meal with a view. Enjoyed the tour through ABC Store. The stuffed kitties were so cute and so glad that you got one for Xavier and the cute onesie. The two grays looked so nice together. How lucky he is to have a Great Aunt and Uncle who love him so much already. I was so touched by your Mothers Day post which I read right before I went to bed that night after a lovely day with my family. I didn’t have time to comment at the time. Xavier is a little doll. I was especially touched by “The Wide Spectrum of Mothering” that Erica shared by Amy Young that day in the comments. Your picture of the Kitties waiting for your arrival was adorable. I can imagine the love session that went on when you got inside. Kitties get anxious when you pack for a trip but oh do they love the unpacking. It’s playtime! I can imagine your surprise when you saw the picture of your house in the shop window. How exciting! Please go back and buy it. You will never regret it and you must have your pictures taken with the two of you and the artist to put on the back of it or framed beside it. I enjoyed the Morgan Library and Museum website , especially the gift shop. Thank you for the lovely New York pictures from your two posts and for sharing. XOXOXO

  76. Susan,
Thank you for the wonderful quick trip to New York! Such wonderment
at all the roof top gardens, historic/beautiful bridges and ABC Home!! I really enjoyed the Musica as you were arriving back home to your island paradise! Oh my, how I love the photo of your kitties waiting for you behind the screen door! Such beautiful eyes that say so much!
Thank you for making the trip short it was like a special night out and then back home again….I love home!! You always make my heart appreciate home and America and the simple life!

  77. Kathie says:

I loved “our” trip to New York City……so happy to be taken along with you and Joe. Lovely views, just lovely. And it’s good to be home again and to see the kitties so well and happy. Thank you very much. Oh, and the great painting of your home. Would one buy such a piece of art and hang it in the very house depicted?

  78. judi says:

What fun! Would love to fly into NYC one weekend a month to explore and enjoy the rooftop refreshments, shops and all. The bridges on that parkway on your way home are stunning and wonderful!!! I agree we NEED another WPA …NOW!

Oh, and funny about those little dresses…whenever I glance at the little girls clothes in a department store – I love the dresses, the patterns, the happiness of them and want them IN MY SIZE!

Thanks for the mini vacation:) xoxo

  79. Debs OBrien says:

Just love this blog entry. Happy you and Joe are safely home; happy that you shared that wonderful road with those happy bridges; happy that the kitties are happy to see you; just happy happy happy!

I have a bit of a thing about architecture. Had things gone the right way {which they didn’t} I could well have been an architect. Loved architecture best of all in art classes and I was good at it too. So, I was ears all pricked up to read that someone had the foresight and intelligence to build bridges too low for trucks! Yay! Will be looking in to that a bit more later on, read up on it a bit, you know.

Love the ABC Home store, and I guess in principle it is a bit like Liberty’s of London {curtsey in deep reverence} with one off pieces you can buy, not cry!

Perfect weather too, for your drive, just the kind I like ~~ cool enough for a sweater and warm enough to bask. Joy, Bliss, Rapture ~ as the lady down the road would say!

On that note, hey ho, there is work to be done, letters to write to my lovely pen friends, and more ~~~ waving from Across The Pond in Wales ~~ Debs xoxo

Girl Kitty is asleep next to me on her pillow right now, Jacks in the “wood room” also asleep, and Joe? He’s asleep too! Mi casa es me casa! Have a wonderful day! xoxo

    Hi Susan
Wow, what pictures you shared with us. Looks like you and Joe had such a good time. You are right about 95 being ugly. I live in CT and I avoid 95 as much as I can. We also take the merritt as much as we can. The weather has been so beautiful, glad it stayed that way while you were away. Happy day Susan

    • sbranch says:

It was so surprising to me that after driving across the entire country, the edge of beautiful Connecticut was the worse looking road of all! Maybe it has to be that way because of the location. But how great you have such a gorgeous alternative.

  82. Michele says:

    love :0)

  83. Marianne from Peoria IL says:

What a beautiful trip to NYC through your eyes (and camera!) Thank you for the moment to stop and dream of the Big Apple in all its’ glory.

    • sbranch says:

Such a beautiful place . . . a little of everything there. I’m sure all the seedy stuff is there too, no doubt, but so much beauty and so many different cultures living side by side in peace.

  84. Joy Pence from Ohio says:

That was an amazing trip! Thank you for taking us along. I have never been to New York and the Dorothy Gail in my probably never will, but it was so much fun to see all the sights through your eyes. I truly loved the ABC Store, that is MY kind of shopping. I’m so glad I was introduced to you so I could become your girlfriend and be part of your wonderful travels. You are a treasure 🙂

P.S. Jack looked a little miffed looking out the screen door upon your arrival…it was like he was saying….and just where have you been young lady…

    • sbranch says:

Jack has no control of his facial expressions! That was his idea of laughing out loud from the joy of having us home! 🙂

  85. Sandy Engel says:

    Dearest Susan…..Thank You!!!!!
For living this wonderful, sweet, appreciative, stopping to smell the roses life…….helping us all to realize how important moments in the day are for us to appreciate, experience, cherish, create…… For these things just don’t always happen……. Sometimes they have to be created……
You are living the life that perhaps we have dreamed about, but as life happens, different paths pull us in many different directions……and life marches on…..we may not always, find the time, make the time, or realize we are missing out on things that bring such soft sweetness to our lives…….
    HOWEVER:):):)
Because of you’re ever sweet spirit, taking us with you on your life journey, we are blessed to share your wonderfully appreciative sweet lifestyle with you, and fulfill our desire to incorporate these sweet moments into our daily lifestyle……
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!!!!

    • sbranch says:

You are a doll Sandy, thank you for those kind words, believe me, it’s my pleasure. xoxo

  86. Mamey Brown says:

Ahhh. Another glorious blog post from Susan Branch. I admit I’m addicted to your website/blog/books and I’ve only been introduced to your world a little over a month now. My husband keeps commenting on all these new books I have sprawled out on coffee table. Little does he know, more are on the way. How grateful I am to my “girlfriend” that showed me your blog. I am a fan for life! Thank you so much for the all the details you put in to each and every thing you do. They mean so much…..NYC is a magical place. I’m happy that you had such a nice time. Thanks again for sharing your life with us. It’s truly an inspiring experience to follow you. I already can’t wait until the next post!! 🙂

    • sbranch says:

So happy you found us Mamey!! One of these days I’ll take you all back to England or Scotland with us. That will be fun!

  87. Cathy McCann says:

You are a fabulous photo-journalist — I felt like I was right there at the ABC shop with you. Lucy and I would go crazy in there. Did you purchase the painting of your house? What a thrill to see that!
The night of that beautiful crescent moon I sent a note to my daughters, feeling such joy that they could look up and see its beauty, too. And there YOU were looking at it, also! What a beautiful world we live in. Thanks for all your precious photos and inspiring words. Happy June! Ethel

  88. Lynn McMahon says:

~ Good Morning ~ Good thing I don’t live anywhere near that store! ~ That looked way too tempting!~ I do love the tongs you bought AND I love asparagus and pasta~With that said….I saw something the other day that I am going to buy ~ A device that cuts your fresh veggies into pasta ~ like noodles~ I’m trying to watch the carbs and with all the fresh veggies coming into season I don’t think I’ll resist buying yet another kitchen utensil! ~ Thanks again for sharing your trip with us~ Lynn

    • sbranch says:

You’ve probably used spaghetti squash for this, but what a brilliant idea for a tool. Does it have a name?

      • Lynn McMahon says:

Hi~ before I go out and buy a “spiralizer” I’m going to try using my julienne peeler~ I saw pin on Pinterest that used it ~ I’ll see if it makes the right size pasta for me ~ if not then I’ll invest in a new tool ~ what a brilliant idea!~

  89. I think the dinosaur room was my favorite 🙂

  90. jan from Princeton says:

Thank you for a wonderful posting. I enjoyed the music, the pictures, and especially the mural by Maxfield Parrish. He was my great-grandmother’s favorite and I have one of his prints.

  91. Marty from NYC says:

    Hello Sue:
So happy that you made it to the Morgan–there are so many treasures there, you can go back time after time and discover new things.
THe King Cole mural is so special–and I sometimes forget about it as something really great to show visitors –and pretend we are back in the thirties elegance. I am not sure reality was ever so good as we imagine- which brings home your point about creativity and imagination making the world we live in.

Unfortunately, the reality I live in calls for a lot of paperwork and phone calls- its getting humid in New York today- a great day for dreaming about MV. Marty

  92. Vickie Getty (Little Rock, AR) says:

Thank you for taking us such beautiful places! I could probably spend a week in ABC Home from the looks of it. The polka dot dress was so you! I picked it too.

  93. Hi Susan,
I am so happy you made it to the Morgan Library. It is one of the most beautiful museums in the world. I lived in New York many years ago and studied Art History for years. I went there and the Metropolitan Museum many times for papers I had to write. I’ve been to museums all over the world and the Morgan Library ranks at the top of my list!

  94. Mary Brehm says:

Hi Susan, Welcome home! It’s always so much fun reading about your life and adventures. I don’t know if you remember, but i wrote to you in your last blog about my dad being in the hospital. Well, he is home with me now. He has a long road to recovery, but each day is one step closer to him being better. I just helped him take a nice hot shower and i made up his bed with sunshine fresh, sheets. I got him all tucked in for a nice nap and now I’m sitting here chatting with you….so nice. Gonna go you and sit in my garden for some quiet time. Thanks again for bringing some sunshine into my day. Mary <3

  95. pat addison (cave junction says:

welcome home Susan. what a fun trip and you have given me a new place to make list for my cousin to shop for on her next trip to New York. loved looking at ABC Home and I have a list ready to give her for shopping there. so that is what George Washington looked like, hmmm if you had not told us it was George Washington, I would have guessed FDR as it looks very much like him, just add the glasses. well off to sweep out the barn and henhouse and get busy sweeping the porches, busy day here. welcome home and have a great day. hugs…… 🙂

  96. Ann Jane Koerber says:

Dear, sweet Susan…….thank you, thank you, thank you for such a lovely get away! This whole blog brought tears……….because it made me feel happy! I avoid I-95 at all costs and I-84 for that matter………the Merritt Pkwy is wonderful and so is Rte 8, North of Waterbury………or Rte 7 going North from Kent all the way to Manchester, VT…..oh, the back roads of America! I admire you that you are so consistent with your blog and sharing with us when you have so much else to do! I would love to have been at the tag sale! As a New Englander, born in Maine, raised in Connecticut and now retired in Massachusetts, believe it or not I have only been to the Cape once and have never been to Martha’s Vineyard……..it’s on my “to do” list, though! xoxo

  97. Although I am most certain Jack was well taken care of…I think he was actually wearing a frown in the screen porch picture! Ha. Loved the blog…now we have yet another place to explore! Have a sunny day!

  98. Sarah says:

The vintage dinnerware department in that store is enough to make a person like me swoon. 🙂 I’m a sucker for that lovely old stuff that made dinner such an event. I was lucky enough several years ago to find some tiny salt cellars and teensy salt spoons that match my sterling flatware pattern. Of course, I NEEDED those. 🙂 I just love them and everyone oohs and ahhs over them when I put them out on the table. Not really practical, but it makes seasoning one’s food special! 🙂

  99. Ellen says:

Sounds like you had a lovely trip. I stayed at that very same hotel with my best girlfriend last year on my first trip to NYC. Absolutely loved it and the rooftop views. We are planning another trip and think we will stay there again.

We will too. It’s really nice, I loved the neighborhood ~ it felt very “real” and compared to the crazy prices in New York, this was pretty darn good.

I truly love your blog, looked forward to reading about all the interesting things you do. About the WPA, that was a little before my time, however I have always thought what a wonderful idea it was. When we as a country continue to give “hand outs” then we will always be giving “hand outs” to people that don’t want to work. The WPA gave men a job and pride in themselves for a job well done. I know not everyone will agree with me but that’s ok too. Thanks for sharing your trip to New York with us. I have been there many times and every time I go it’s wonderful.
