LET’S DO OUR DRAWING TODAY

Well, there is SO much going on around here ~ I thought I better do our drawing today! Strike while the iron is hot! But first, let’s see, let’s go hang out in 1928 for a while . . . MUSICA!

toast girlfriends winter word

I’ve almost finished writing us a new WILLARD!  It will start going out on Tuesday morning and I hope you will love it! Is everyone is signed up? If not, and you’d like my newsletter delivered to your email box, just go HERE and sign up. And while you’re at it, sign up your mom and your sister too, and your kitty movesBFF, because it’s going to be chock full of good and fun stuff.  I’m also updating the blog on Tuesday! Very exciting! Love it when everything happens at once! Between the blog and Willard, us packing to go away on our two-month Book Tour, and the constant Kitty Kissing, there is A LOT going on . . . including, in this new Willard, more Giveaways, and even a Grand Prize Giveaway. Oh yeah. We’re doin’ it up big.🎉pink-flowers

So I thought I better step in now and announce the winners of the SIX books, with paintbrushes and bookmarks . . . so I can get them in the mail to the Lucky Winners on Monday and not get everything all mixed up with Tuesday! Hate it when that happens! Can’t believe how many people we have entered in this drawing. Wild eh, and what fun! Have you read any of the comments? Only the nicest people in the world! 💏 That’s all. You really don’t know how often you make me cry! Sometimes I can’t even answer because I don’t know what to say! That’s how nice you are.

IMG_7158

So, just a little reminder . . . our six winners will get a personalized copy of my new book, Martha’s Vineyard, Isle of Dreams, that one  up there, PLUS

IMG_7033

Each book will come with one of the worn-out paintbrushes I used to paint the watercolors in the new book AND these messy bits made into bookmarks from the blotters where I test colors and try to figure out what is wrong when my pen starts acting up. Little bits of book DNA from the construction site.from me to you with loveBut before I announce the winners, I thought you might enjoy a bit of Morning Science. For any of you with a Wisteria, this may be old news, but I find it endlessly fascinating, what a Wisteria does in the springtime, so I thought I’d show you one of my favorite harbingers of spring.🌞

IMG_7645

You know what a wisteria looks like in bloom, right?  And the smell? Floral heaven. Like the inside of a flower store ~ Ours were planted a long time ago, by the woman who owned our house from 1940 to 1980, the very much appreciated Mrs. Bowditch. They hang on an arbor over the kitchen-porch side of our house and the fragrance goes up through the second story windows (where I am taking this photo) and into the bedrooms, thank you very much.💛

IMG_7649They make May . . . in May the Island air smells like ocean mixed with lilac and wisteria.

IMG_7185

Here’s how our wisteria looks right now, not quite as lovely, despite the fabulous blue sky . . . but see all those dangling bean-like things? That’s what I wanted to show you.

IMG_7184

Here they are up-close. They are fuzzy like pussy willows.Inlovewithnature

IMG_7180

They drop in the spring in the first days of warmth from the sun ~ the porch and the driveway are covered in them. They make the most delightful cracking noise when you step on them because they are very hard. I go out of my way to step on as many as I possibly can. From what I saw on the driveway this morning, I’m about to be in crunch heaven.

IMG_7181They don’t really drop actually, they kind of split apart and explode . . .

IMG_7186The pods hit our windows, we can hear it happening, little ticks against the glass . . . A few of them get all they way across the driveway onto the lawn . . . they really do explode. We think it might be from happiness.happy?

IMG_7188

The daffodils watch intently, as you can see.  And see the little black dots on the driveway around them . . .?

IMG_7182The by-product! Free wisteria seeds!  Isn’t that fabulous?miracles

                                                   It’s our springtime miracle!Fairy2

And you might wonder, but is there anything actually blooming in your yard now? And I would have to say, Oh, yes there is!IMG_7138

Our Magnolia is in bloom.

spring!

Alright, that’s the end of Morning Science for today 🌷 . . . so here we go dear ones, I do so hope you win!!!!! But if you don’t, remember, there will be more chances in Willard, more chances in the next post, and lots of fun surprises coming. It’s spring, I have a new book, we’re going for a long ride, hill and dale across the country to meet all our Girlfriends, and we’re here to

celebrate!So here we go!

Vanna . . . darling . . . climb up there and dive into the vat won’t you? (Remember when it was only a basket she had to draw from? Now it’s a vat!  Filled with teeny weeny slips of paper, each with a tiny name on it!  So exciting! We are gaining Girlfriends, Girlfriends!)

THE WINNERS of the SIX BOOKS AND ETC. ARE:

I hate this part. Up till now everyone is a winner, as well it should be, since that is the bottom-line truth, but now all of a sudden, it’s narrowed down considerably. I always say this when Vanna is diving into the vat, and I always feel it. Oh well. Must. do. my. job. She’s UP!!! Handful of names are flapping in the wind.  Here we go . . .

Happiness abounds, joy bells ring, honking horns dinning, awesomeness reigns for:

Celia Reusch!

Sylvie from France!

Diane P. from Northern California

Rachael Anna

Kenna Morris!

I’ll send you each an email and you can write me back with your address and who you would like the book inscribed to . . . you, or perhaps you have someone else in mind! I will love to do it, and Joe will get them in the mail to you on Monday (or as soon as I hear back from you). We have our first French Person winner! How exciting!🌎We are the world, Girlfriends! 💞

Off I go, but I’ll be back so soon it’s almost ridiculous. Please don’t get sick of me!  Have a wonderful day, a wonderful weekend, breathe in some of that fresh spring air and know you are loved.  XOXO

    Hi Sue,
I read your book in ONE DAY…sat my fanny down on the couch and didn’t move until it was dark! I loved it. But I particularly loved the ending. It was so uplifting and inspiring I read it over and over. I plan to read the book a second time as I did with your two other books. Thank you for sharing your life and your inspirations. I too, am a late bloomer and it gave me hope that there are better things out there now that I’m at an age where I know myself well. Following you from 1989, I have had the honor of going on this life tour with you. Thank you! xo

    • sbranch says:

My honor too, with you Tracy . . . we are planet mates, and that is saying something. Here’s to late bloomers!

  2. matty says:

A big congratulations to the winners! (Aren’t we all??) When your book arrives, clear the decks, make a pot of tea, and grab a box of tissues…. You’ll be glad you did! Hooray for surprises!

Happy Spring Day to you, Fairy Godmother Susan!

  3. Gert~Iowa says:

Congratulations to all your winners! But actually we’re all winners, just knowing you and reading your books, it’s like we hit the ‘girlfriend’ jackpot!! Your spring looks amazing! Ours is slow to bloom, due to those freezing temperatures we’ve had lately. First spring temperatures came early awakening the trees from their winters nap…only to be shocked by the freezing temperatures and spring blizzard with 14″ of snow. I think they are considering re-blooming now. (You know God put a second chance in the trees…) So much going on in your life…enjoy each and every moment! Blessings..

    • sbranch says:

Yes, 14″ would require some reconsideration! But the next time you write, it will probably be 85*, wouldn’t surprise me with the wild weather we’ve been having! Love you Gert, thank you!

      • Gert~Iowa says:

Oh, bless you! And you’re right, we have had a weird spring!!! However, great news yesterday when I let Rusty out voila there were blooms on our flowering crab tree!!! Where did they come from?? Maybe due to the warmth of the day??? I do not know, only that I am super excited!!! I will photograph them each day until their in full bloom!!!!! Awww…spring at last !!

  4. Lisa R (northern Az) says:

Congratulations to the lucky six!! Sweet of you Susan, to make your give aways so special. Thoughts and prayers for you on these busy days! See you in June. ♥

    • sbranch says:

      See you then Lisa!

  5. Lynn Marie says:

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to see the names of the winners and cheer for them even if they are not me. The picture of Jack watching the yard from the window over the Wisteria is sweet. Happy Spring, packing, and trip. I will see you in Wilmette at the tea/signing!

  6. Lynngweeny says:

Am I the first to comment? Woohoo!!! It’s my birthday today and even though I didn’t win the drawing , I feel like this is a gift in itself! Love you Susan and thanks for making the world an even more beautiful place!

  7. Sarah in Tucson says:

Thank you for sharing the wonderful springtime beauty! The picture with Jack in the window, the heart shaped rocks, & the wisteria is adorable, Jack seems to be enjoying it too. Have a good weekend, can’t wait to read Willard. Congratulations to all the winners! 🙂

  8. Denise G says:

What a lovely way to start my day. Wishing you all the best in your book tour travels Susan!

  9. 🌷 Congrats to the lucky girlfriends! I just finished the book last night Susan. What can I say? It was magical and mesmerizing and I discovered so many ways you and I are kindred spirits, from fathers who worked for the phone company, who later divorced and remarried and remained friendly with our moms. Precious grandmothers who influenced us in so many ways, especially in the kitchen. We fell in love with Laura Ashley and kittens and gardening and so much more, too numerous to mention. You’re one classy gal, ending the book with gratitude to everyone dear to you including the dasterly C. Branch *wink*wink* I was content knowing even he found a happily ever after! Have a safe road trip! Wish you were coming back to Naperville, IL. Maybe next time!🌷

  10. Stephanie says:

Exciting to see the winning names, and since it wasn’t me 🙁 , now I am free to buy both books for my 89 year old mom for Mother’s Day! She loved “A Fine Romance, and I know she’ll love your next two. I am in the middle of “Isle of Dreams”, savoring it page by page.
Thank you for the very moving and lovely description of the wind on p. 136 – has given me a brand new awareness of something we might take for granted most days. Also, your joyous welcoming of the fall season….so true. I grew up on the East Coast and “went west” in my early 20’s…..40 years now in the Seattle area (where we do have seasons!). Hope you’ll make it to the Northwest some day for a book tour! Thanks so much for your heart-felt inspirations!

    • sbranch says:

Happy to hear that Stephanie, and please say hello to your mom for me! I’ll try to get up there one of these days. I’ve been before, but Joe never has and I know he would love it! Thank you so much! xoxo

  11. Nele from Michigan says:

Congratulations to all the winners!!! And thank you, Susan for being so generous! SO fun!!!
LOVE reading your books and your blog!!! You bring in a huge breeze of fresh air into my life! I thank the good Lord for you!!!
Happy spring!! The sun is FINALLY shining in Michigan and warming up the daffodils!
    Nan ☺️

  12. nellie says:

Happy week-end, sweet Sue, and congratulations to the winners!! Very lucky, they are!

Doubt that you have much of a week-end with all that is coming up in the next few days for you. Everything takes such preparation!

Sunshine here, and a glorious spring day, perfect for doing something you love outdoors. I noticed that there had been snowflakes in Oxford today! I do remember a snowfall on April 18 here, too, but that doesn’t seem to be in the future for us this year.

I’m busy planning an appetizer party using recipes from your very first book! I look forward to the reissue! It will have to be an addition to my collection!

I’m off to an assisted living center to help my church Circle as we play bingo with the residents.

Sending you lots and lots of good wishes, love, and hugs!

    xo Nellie

    • sbranch says:

Enjoy Nellie, I don’t have to tell you to spread sunshine! It’s who you are! xoxo

    • Kim Skaggs says:

I loved your post and congratulations to the winners. I too adore wisteria. I read a few years ago that it is very poisonous, but I wanted to double check so googled it and it is. How tragic that something so pretty has a dark side. This is what the gardening journal says “Pods and seeds are the most toxic parts, but all parts of this plant are considered poisonous. Symptoms of wisteria poisoning, which can appear after ingesting only 1 or 2 pods, include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea and depression of the central nervous system.Mar 29, 2016” I didn’t know if you knew. I can’t wait for Willard and the new blog update.

      • sbranch says:

We don’t eat them and even the turkeys seem to leave them alone! So many plants are poisonous, it’s kind of amazing when you see what kitties aren’t supposed to eat!

  13. Elaine says:

Happy for all the winners! Finnished the book in 2 days – loved it and your beautiful additions and changes to the cottage. When did you leave it and move to the lovely home you have now? Those wonderful white houses – they don’t make them like that anymore. Safe journey on your book tour. Wish you were coming to the Gulf Coast of Florida!

    • sbranch says:

We left Holly Oak in 1989 . . . just too small for Joe . . . Thank you Elaine! Maybe we’ll get down there someday!

    • Kiki Nakita says:

      Elaine,

I was also wondering when Susan and Joe moved to their current home, and if it had an idyllic name like Holly Oak, also?

      ~Kiki~

      • sbranch says:

The name of our house now was sort of built into the address . . . Spring Street. I does look like a Spring Street.

    • Barbara P says:

      Hello Elaine,
Glad to see there’s another Florida ‘Girlfriend’ of Susan’s-aren’t we lucky, though? I live in Sarasota and would love to see her come our way, but it’s a long way for her to travel. But, who knows, it might just happen! Hope you’re having a lovely Sunday, wherever you may be. Just wanted to say “Hi”.
      Barbara

  14. Catie says:

Oh CONGRATULATIONS to the lucky GF’s who are winners of Susan’s latest book! You are going to LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I couldn’t wait to see if I might be lucky enough to win one…I had to have my very own copy just as quickly as possible once it was available for shipment! I haven’t loved a book so much since I read “Fairy Tale Girl”!!! And I read a LOT of books….

Have a wonderful book tour, Susan. We live in the Northwoods, far from any city on your itinerary…which makes me sad. But I totally understand…enjoy your trip!!!!

    • sbranch says:

Maybe some day Catie, and thank you so much for the sweet comments. More drawings coming up on Tuesday, so please come back. Happy Spring! xoxo

  15. mari1017 says:

Ah, wisteria! So gorgeous & fragrant🌞 Congratulations to these lucky six girlfriends! ❤ And thank you, Susan, for making us all feel so very special – we are blessed to be touched by your loving ❤ & creativity through your books, kitties, blogs, etc.😀🌹 Love MV Isle of Dreams, back for a second reading…too much to absorb in one reading! I too have been reading & enjoying your work from the New England beginning, so these two latest tomes bring so many bits and pieces into focus. I’m blessed to be part of this wonderful blog! Happy trails ahead on your book tour & God bless! Thank you🌹❤💫

  16. Margie Orr says:

Read ISLE OF DREAMS and laughed and cried. I am reading it to my husband at night and ordered a book for my sister. Am thinking about getting on for my cousin too! 😊 Thank you Susan for the beauty in words and drawings. ❤️

  17. Vicki says:

    Love the weeping cherry!

I have to remember to visit Cape Cod in May so that I can smell sea AND floral…

Many congrats to the lucky winners!

    • Vicki says:

Have had Beverly Cleary on my mind this week (she turned age 100) and for some reason, I have no idea why, when I got the image in my head of you delightfully stomping on every wisteria pod you can crunch, all I could think of was the character Ramona from the author’s books for kids. That childlike wonder of yours is what keeps you young, Susan! Keep on crunching!

      • sbranch says:

I couldn’t stop and wouldn’t want to. That sound is musica to my ears! 😜 xoxo Thank you Vicki! Happy Birthday Beverly Cleary!

    • sbranch says:

      You will love it Vicki!

  18. Christina Breidenbach says:

Congratulations to the 6 winners! I have been savoring your newest book, dear Susan….usually I devour it in one sitting but I promised myself to only read two or three pages at one sitting so it will last longer! I was so sad to read of your loneliness in the beginning on the island as you bring so much joy to all of us through your life and your books. I’m so happy you have been in a happier place and wish only that for you for the rest of your time. I will be at your tea and talk in New Hope, Pa and am so looking forward to meeting you.
    Your girlfriend, Christina

    • sbranch says:

As they say, if you want the rainbow, you have to put up with the rain. See you in New Hope Christina!

  19. Heartsdesire says:

Congratulations to all the lucky winners. I know they will enjoy the book with great enthusiasm. Hopefully, if it is spring in their area, they might be able to sit in their garden with a cup of tea while reading. Looking forward to the new Willard, and all the surprises. I love being a Susan Branch girlfriend.

  20. Leslie Gammelgaard says:

My beautiful book arrived yesterday! I’m a winner! I treated myself…after all, it’s spring!!! Happy trails, Susan!

  21. Carrie says:

Get sick of you??? Never in a zillion two hundred twelfty million years!!! And my heart was actually beating faster as I scrolled down to get to the winners–it’s so exciting, for all of us. Cheers to the lovely winners, what treasures those will be. Still haven’t gotten my copy of MV-IoD because it’s waiting for me at my daughter’s in Atlanta where I’ll be in just one week. Back on home soil for a few weeks. Cannot wait to get it in my hot little hands–actually they’re cold at the moment because we had snow in Oxford today–but you know what I mean. So happy for everyone and thank you for sharing it all with us. xxxxx and ooooo

    • sbranch says:

“Twelfty million” wins the award for math creativity!!! Love it Carrie! Thank you. Travel safely!

  22. Rhonda Hagen says:

Can’t wait to get my book. Tuesday I’m thinking my mail carrier will bring it to me!!!

  23. Mary W. Gough says:

I am almost finished with my first (but certainly not my last!) reading of this wonderful book. I love the quotes you have selected (and I, too, cherish books of quotations), I love the drawings, I love your descriptions (especially of the storms…I enjoy vicarious experiences with extreme weather)…it is all so wonderful. I admit: I did not find Fairytale Girl to be an upper, but I knew the best was yet to come (because you said so), and, oh, my! It really has come with Isle of Dreams.
Thank you for such a wonderful treat…it is, in fact a retreat for the reader…Enjoy your book signing tour, and don’t forget that I really want you to publish a magazine…

    • sbranch says:

Re: Fairy Tale Girl, you do have to start somewhere. Those young days when things were thrown at you like noodles on a wall, seeing what sticks, all confusion and longing and hope. I’m glad it all ended up the way it did, life is quite a trip! Okay, magazine! I will keep that in mind! Thank you Mary!

  24. Debbie Sowards says:

It would be awesome to collect some of those wisteria seeds for a giveaway!
How fun would that be?! So many little blessings on your sidewalk! Have a wonderful day!

    • sbranch says:

      Hmmmmmm.

      • Catie says:

Oh I LOOOOOOOVE that idea!!!!!! Not that Susan doesn’t already have enough on her plate…home, hubby, kitties, garden, blog, Willard, painting and, of course, a book tour! Maybe the Isle of Dreams will get a nice wind and blow all of the Wisteria seeds into a nice, neat little pile…???? xoxo

  25. Joan Allert says:

    Hi Susan,
So happy for the winners. Just wondering when the new edition of Heart of the Home will be finished and ready to go?
    Thanks,
    Joanie

  26. Tisa says:

Got such a kick out of the ukulele ‘hit song’, it just made me smile & wish I could see the face of the guy singing that scat at the end of the tune. Thanks for sharing it! It took me right through your post to the end, and heightened the anticipation for the drawing of the book pkg winners….tah dah…congrats to the lucky winners. The next song that played was Polka Dots and Moonbeams by Tommy Dorsey and Frank Sinatra, so smooooooth (and I love the title!). Your photos are always fab and wisteria….sigh…a must have in any garden, though the seemingly delicate tendrils will twist around any hardy tree or deck-post it can and slowly strangle it as it gets stronger. Sounds like a life metaphor somehow 🙂

    • sbranch says:

Tommy Dorsey with Frank Sinatra was a match made in heaven. Those long intros are what I love. Tommy Dorsey’s Trombone and Frank Sinatra’s voice. Perfection! LOL, your life metaphor! Too much of a good thing!

  27. Beth Bruno says:

Susan – I am reading the book slowly and re-reading some parts and laughing and crying and seeing myself in you in so many ways. Isn’t it amazing how much we all have in common? I am so glad I have you in my life, even if it is just vicariously. I wanted to share this quote with you (since I am a quote-o-phile like you are!)
“The whole way to heaven is heaven itself”. Teresa of Avila

That’s what I think of when I read your story. And mine too, for that matter!

Happy spring and I look forward to seeing you in June! Hugs!!!
    Beth

    • sbranch says:

That is exactly right, how much we all have in common. The media would have us believe we are very separate and apart, but that is just not the truth about us. I also love that quote, although I’ve heard it “All the way to heaven is heaven.” Thank you dear Beth, so nice to hear from you! xoxo

  28. Bonnie says:

Your book Martha’s Vineyard Isle of Dreams made it to me on the day I was home sick with a stomach bug. Lucky me I got to cuddled up with my little dog Zoey, a cup of tea and your book. I couldn’t stop reading it. Loved the first two books so much. Your book made my day. Can’t wait to meet you in New Hope!
Working on a Counted Cross Stitch Kit of yours I found on Ebay. It’s a basket of apples. Would love to have the pattern for the little American flag you did on the plane ride.

    • Bonnie says:

I notice all my comments awaiting moderation. Is something wrong with my posts/email? Hope not!

      • sbranch says:

It’s not you, it’s me, lots of comments come in at the same time, and it takes me a while to get through them. I like to read them! xoxo

    • sbranch says:

I think it wasn’t a pattern . . . I think, if I remember correctly, I just drew that on there. You could probably do that too. Thank you Bonnie!

  29. Gayle says:

It’s always a lovely day when an email from Susan Branch arrives in my inbox!
Thanks for sharing love with the world!

  30. Fran Silver says:

Congratulations to the lucky winners! Each of us are winners just by reading your wonderful books. I had already read the first two, and finished Martha’s Vineyard the day after it arrived. I also purchased all three books for my cousin – who also loves your art and wit. Now I am wandering around the house looking for another book that would inspire me, make me think, make me be more grateful – but you know what? I will have to re-read the ones you have already written! Know you will have lots of fun on your book tour – but hope you will come home and think about another wonderful book for us all to read. You are an amazing person. It is so hard to believe that you did not believe in yourself for so long. If anyone has the talent, insight and the best of hearts – it is you! What a pleasure you are to all of us. Thank you does not begin to cover it all.

    • sbranch says:

“Wandering around the house, looking for a book that would inspire me, make me think, make me be more grateful” is EXACTLY what I did . . . your thoughts ring all my bells. When you know the books you are looking for, you know the book you wish to write. Thank you so much, Fran. xoxoxo

  31. Carolyn says:

Well, it was fun, regardless, to hold my breath while Vanna pulled the names! Ocean and lilac and wisteria! If you bottled that it would be my only perfume. Looking forward to Willard on Tuesday! Happy spring!

  32. Congratulations to the fortunate winners! But I’m just as fortunate to be a F.O.S.B., so I’m happy. 🙂 The two Lilac Bushes that have grown into trees on either side of my Arbor Garden entrance years ago FINALLY have blossoms!

  33. Virginia says:

LOVED Isle of Dreams! I laughed out loud at your date with Goat Man. And your description of your trip to Little Brown… you made my palms sweat, too! And Ellie and Myron and Carl… not so crazy about Cliff, though. 🙂

So, so glad you decided to write these books, Susan. They were well worth the wait. xoxox

    • sbranch says:

Goat man. Can you imagine? I’m so happy your palms sweat ~ I’m not alone! Cliff is good, he couldn’t help it. And because of him, I got Joe. xoxoxoxox

  34. Penny says:

🌷🌷🌷🌷 Susan I just finished MARTHA’s Vineyard isle of DREAMS ❤️IT !!! It’s my favorite of the TRILOGY . Love your absololute honesty 🌺! You are a gifted artist ! Thanks for inspiration -see you in DANVILLE,Ca book signing in May👯.Penny🌺

  35. Debbie Clardy says:

    Dear Susan,
I just finished your new book and savored each page…what an inspiration you are to so many…thank you, thank you!
I also discovered an amazing coincidence…my sister was married in Chilmark on May 8, 1982 on the deck of a home her husband, then a young architect, designed. Our family traveled to Martha’s Vineyard from New Jersey and Pennsylvania and we stayed at the Kelley House during the week of the wedding!
    Fondly,
    Debbie from Eastampton, NJ

Was it quiet there? Did you go to the restaurant?

  36. Jeannette from the Central Coast says:

So excited for all the girlfriends who won the books and brushes! I am reading the book, but “pacing” myself and savoring each chapter and illustration/photo! I must say, the whole book is beautiful !! Just got my ticket for the Morro Bay lecture/signing and can’t wait to finally meet you in person – along with all the other local girlfriends:) Journey’s mercies!

  37. Jane Armour says:

Thank you, Susan, for this beautiful post. I did not enter the drawing, as I have a preorder copy of your beautiful new book. I am especially looking forward now to reading it. I have just experienced a huge life transition myself. My stepfather, 84 years young at heart, who lived with me died very unexpectedly in my home on Wednesday morning and when I read the first page or two of your new book, I knew I was in the right place. Thank you!

I’m so sorry Jane. A rollercoaster of emotions is the way I found it to be. Wishing you love and a good foundation under you xoxoxo

  38. Julie says:

I had no idea about the “free” wisteria seeds. Always wondered what those were mixed in with the pods I’d see on the ground from wisteria I came across in town. Thanks for the science project info. Next time I’ll pick some up and see how far I can nurture them into a plant. Hats off to you for sharing.

  39. Kathy Kiefer says:

    Dear Susan

Finished your new book within a few days after receiving. Quite interesting, thank you!

BUT……..you can’t stop there ! 🤓. I must know about Joe and your present home !
How you found it, remodeled?, history and of course the decorating !!!!
Doesn’t have to be personal it could be a decorating book. What do u think?
    We all would love it!😍

    • sbranch says:

I think a decorating book of this house through the seasons would be a great way to tell the story. And it would be so fun to do it. I have pictures from the very beginning. Thank you Kathy!

  40. Virginia says:

A beautiful day in New England and a beautiful surprise to get a Saturday blog post from you. Isn’t it fun to be grown up and still enjoy scrunching wisteria pods–or whatever scrunchable plant material grows where we are?

Hooray for the winners. Vanna had her work cut out for her this time. I’m surprised she was able to emerge at all from those thousands of names.

I am already a winner as your book arrived a week ago. I stopped what I was doing, read as long as I could and saved the last part for the next day. What a journey you have taken. How well you tell it and show it with your watercolors and photos. It’s so hard to say much because I don’t want to write any spoilers for others.

Susan, I have collected biographies and memoirs of American women, from the colonial era onwards, for many years. I am looking at them now in my home office. What an extraordinary group of women they represent, some famous, most everyday women meeting the challenge of life in different times and places. I am very proud to put your three volumes on the shelves with these amazing women.

    • sbranch says:

Oh thank you Virginia, you know how proud I am to be seen in that light. It is wonderful how much there is to be learned from the past. We’re so lucky these stories exist, so filled with inspiration and spirit!

  41. Trudy says:

Congratulations to the Lucky Girlfriends !
Love the ‘two-headed’ Kitty under the table! And the spring is in the air-love it!!!
The world starts all over again with flowering and we only have to watch and enjoy all those lovely flowers and trees.
Have a save journey and looking forwards to tuesday!
    greetings,Trudy from the Netherlands

  42. Ginnie says:

Lucky, lucky girlfriends! If they hadn’t preordered a copy, they are in for a wonderful, uplifting treat. I have read mine twice! And now have just reread A Fine Romance ( finally having the story in order 🙂 ) and love every word and picture and illustration and distilled genius in them. Thank you, Susan, for sharing your remarkable journey – I love hearing about all of it. And I’m so thankful for your blog – inspiration you share on a wonderful frequency. xxoo

  43. Patsy in Nixa, MO says:

When I saw that the books had just arrived, I felt I had time to take my trip to the south and still return in time to write the first review. Wrong! Guess I didn’t get my order in first like I thought. I got my book right after I got home, but some of the Girlfriends had already read the book and posted comments.

But I’m not pouting. My review might not be first this time, but it’s the best. So there!

    • sbranch says:

Patsy, your review was heaven! I had to read it to Joe. Thank you so much. I don’t know how I got so lucky to have a Girlfriend like you. 💞

  44. Susan from Bainbridge Island,Wa. says:

You are my sunshine on a Saturday morning! I love getting online and finding you there with new inspirations! So happy for the winners and that their names are there…I am just about to start your book…I have been waiting for the perfect time (with no interruptions) for a couple days now…I want to read it all the way through…..I am so excited to start it…I thumbed through a little when I got it and I have been dying to find the perfect day.. and today is it!…The wisteria seeds are fascinating….I would love to find a way to get a couple of those seeds from you and plant at my home….Wisteria has such a wonderful smell! and they grow fairly quickly, once they take hold!!!! So beautiful….I have a tree peony growing at my home and it is gorgeous…Pink and it is HUGE!!! The diameter is about 12 inches on each flower….Peony is my very favorite flower. Here in PNW the peonies and lilacs, pink dogwood are all blooming at the same time….such beautiful bouquets to bring into the house. Oh how I love Spring….(but Fall is still my very favorite!) the sun is shining and the sky is solid blue, no clouds today..Puget Sound is sparkling like diamonds…and the seagulls overhead are telling us all “what a beautiful Saturday it is”….. So now, I am off to spend the day with you in your book…Tea is hot, chair is waiting and Dinah, my Tuxie cat is ready for a lap nap!!!! See you later Dear girlfriend! From my island to yours! xoxo

  45. Sharon at The Farm in South Carolina says:

I am savoring each and every page too. We are all winners because we all can read about Susan in Martha’s Vineyard, Isle of Dreams, but congrats to the special ones that also get Susan’s paintbrushes and blotter bookmarks. Can’t wait for Willard and the next drawings!

  46. Maria M. says:

Congratulations to all six lucky girlfriends! I agree–we are all winners right now. Susan, I spent five blissful evenings reading MVIOD … taking my time to savor each page. Such a lovely story of your life and art taking wonderful shape on that beautiful isle. I loved Agnes and your transformation of Holly Oak. The dating tales had me giggling (having some of those myself after my divorce), especially your conversations with Diana afterward. And your courage to write that first book is an inspiration to budding writers and artists everywhere. When I had finished the last page, I wept. I don’t know how you’ll top this one, but I’m confident you’ll find a way.
You are blessed. We ALL are blessed for getting to know so much more of your story. Thank you, Susan. xoxo
    Maria
P.S. I hope I didn’t give you nightmares or anymore cold sweats after telling you my plane story the other day. 😉

    • sbranch says:

LOL, no. I got over it. But sometimes I had to just not look! 😜 You know, I get clammy hands when I even think about it! I’m so hopeless! I’m happy you enjoyed the book. Love seeing you here Maria . . . and on Twitter! Girlfriends forever! xoxo

  47. Carolyn Fitzgerald Rodgers says:

Ah! Those glorious clusters of Wisteria!
Earlier in life, it seemed that a surprise shower came during each Easter Eve, and ushered in a bright Sunday morning, so that when I opened my backdoor, I was greeted by the fragrance and vision of glistening Wisteria blossoms that had gracefully draped themselves over the fence and scampered way up high into the trees overnight.
(Profanely, perhaps, but lovingly, I have described my can’t-bear-to-throw-away art and decorator magazines as “The Wisteria of the print media.” Delightfully ubiquitous, as they are . . .)

  48. Lorrie says:

Congratulations to the winners! I started the book yesterday afternoon after getting home from teaching, ignored my husband most of the evening, and got up at 5:30 this morning to finish it. Such satisfaction. I, too, wonder what happened to Holly Oak – is someone still living there now?

You are a bright spark in our days, Susan Branch!

    • sbranch says:

Yes, someone lives in the house . . . a single woman probably about my age. She loves it. I dropped a book off to her the other day so she could read about Agatha and Holly Oak’s roots. She’s added onto it quite a bit.

  49. Rosemary Morse says:

Ohhhh congrats to the Lucky Six – I’m so happy for them, but secretly wishing Vanna would take another vat dive! lol But I love contests and will be patient. Thank you Susan for always building up the excitement. I received my/your new book last week and can not wait to dig in. Just now finishing up The Fairy Tale Girl and so glad to have another Susan book to get into. Congrats again you lucky six winners!! Safe travels to you and Joe on your book tour.

  50. deezie says:

    Hi Susan
That was so much fun, seeing who the winners were. I love that
We have wisteria and I have not seen those pods yet, ours is just going to bloom this year for the second time. Only bloomed a little last year. Loved it
I got your book and read it in one day. How good it was. Can’t wait for the next one. Love how you write Susan
    enjoy this glorious day today
    deezie

  51. Pat Triska says:

I also finished the book in one day. I couldn’t put it down. I was dreading the end of the book because what would I do then? It was fantastic and I want more. How about the next one being about falling in love with Joe and buying a different home. I want more!!! lol I have told all my friends about you. You are like one of my best friends. I wish you much success on your ventures. Enjoy your trip across the country.

  52. Susan Miller says:

Congratulations to all the winners!!! 😊😊😊
Here in Georgia, it’s my birthday today😊😊😊 and the weather is simply gorgeous!
I’m glad the blossoms are starting to appear up north!

  53. Aw Susan, I wasn’t going to write, but you always give and share such joy! I got your book about a week ago, but saved it until I could savor it…..it is like a wonderful box of candy that is so good you want it to last forever. ( I started it last night and am going to try to make it last. ) 🙂 Thank you! Congrats to all the winners. You do make even picking the winners a special event. Happy and safe travels. I love the quote from Einstein about miracles…it is one of my favorites! And, come to think of it, so are you! Mary

  54. Diana H. says:

Oh CONGRATS to the lucky LUCKY winners!!! So happy to have a Girlfriend from France!!! ….. Lovely post today and we are having such a lovely day here in the middle of the country. Beautiful temps, none of that dastardly humidity yet, sunshine and a breeze. Can’t get much better than that…I’m catching up on my planning and will soon get ready to hear Pictures at an Exhibition tonight at the St. Louis Symphony after dinner out with the hubs…. we are so very lucky to have such a wonderful orchestra to attend, and also many more musical/artistic opportunities. Jazz at the Bistro is up this week as well, so we are flying high for sure!!! Your yard looks beautiful. We have a few bloomers as well and have had to cut grass a couple of times. That is how you know spring is definitely taking hold!!! Put the firewood away and the flannel sheets…. now it is time for fans and open windows before the a/c has to kick in! Enjoy your pre-travel time!…. it is always exciting anticipating a trip! Happy Weekend to all!!

  55. Leigh Nodar says:

Congratulations to the winners! I’m about to start The Enchanted April, which you mentioned. Looking forward to it.

  56. Julie V from Springfield, MO says:

Thank you for sharing the beautiful spring pictures. Congrats to the lucky girl friends who won – I feel like a winner just by being a part of it all! Happy Birthday to you Sue, and to Lynn who’s b-day is today. Mine is tomorrow and I have saved your book to read as my birthday treat! Only four more weeks until I see you at your book signing in St. Charles, Mo – the countdown has begun!:)
    Looking forward to the Willard.
    Have a great week!

  57. Tina Mandeville says:

You are just one big giving tree, Susan! You give so much to all of us always…and no, we NEVER tire of that or you! Still basking in the book…..sigh…..so much of life in that thing…..the joys, the sorrows, the stories, the art, the photos, the lessons, the quotes, the recipes, etc etc etc….Just loved it! Oh how I love lilacs and wisteria and ocean breezes, too….taking a trip “our” ocean tomorrow! I will be on the other side of the shore but I will blow a kiss your way! Thanks for everything! Looking forward to Willard and especially to seeing you soon!!!! xo

    • sbranch says:

They say that to be a wonderful cook, you must have someone wonderful to cook for. That’s how I feel about YOU! See you soon Tina! XOXO

  58. Cindy A. says:

I love wisteria! I’ve wanted some forever and a day now, but no one around here has taken the hint yet. I guess I just need to take myself to the nursery and see if they have any plants in stock. While I’m there, I think I’ll look for a lilac bush too. I’ve asked for one for Mother’s Day for years now to no avail. I guess everyone thinks I’m kidding, but I most certainly am not. Looking forward your new Willard!

    • sbranch says:

You will be so happy with both, I’m sure. It’s wonderful to have something bloom on its own each spring!

  59. Celia Reusch says:

Oh my gosh!!!! What a wonderful surprise at the end of my business trip to find THIS in the mailbox (email box)!!! And yes, I’m tearing up and have to rely on my typing without vision. Can. Not. Wait. to meet you in Austin! We’ll take a pic together holding my goodies! Love you and thank you, Celia

  60. sylvia in seattle says:

Oh happy day for those lucky winners! I finished Iles of Dreams and will read it again slowly for details tomorrow. Have to put on my thinking cap for Scrabble today with my youngest daughter and friends. I’ll have your books prominently placed. They need to know about you. So glad I found out about you and your blog and books. Life is considerably enriched and “enchanted” 🙂 Have fun packing. Can’t wait for postings from the road.

    • sbranch says:

Thank you so much Sylvia. Good luck with the Scrabble. xoxo

      • sylvia in seattle says:

Well, I won by a whisker. All the girls fondled your books and Elaine (a writer herself) loved the Oatmeal quote from Kay Thompson 🙂 she was familiar with your name but had not seen your books yet – and I was SOOOO happy to introduce her to them. We talked up a storm – everything from FDR (me) to also me asking for a definition of “hipsters”. My brain is on overload. Hmmm, I think there’s some leftover ice cream . . . That might cool it down a bit.

  61. Nettie says:

Oh dear in one of my lives I’d feel like a looser but today because your book is so wonderful I don’t (at least not totally). Having become your girlfriend and president of your fan club(in my dreams) oh so long ago and now owned your newest masterpiece I know I’m a winner!! I am happy for the winners and know they must be jumping for joy!! Have a wonderful safe journey with your best guy❤️❤️❤️

    • sbranch says:

That’s the best part. Joe are I are at our best together while traveling . . . very much looking forward to it!

  62. Laura says:

Hello Susan and friends! Congratulations to all the lucky winners- how fun! Susan, since you are a fellow Downton Abbey/Julian Fellowes fan, I thought I would mention a serial he is doing in case you (or anyone who reads these comments) haven’t heard about it. The story is being told in installments (as was done in days gone by!) and takes place in the 1800s. The clever bit is that the story can be downloaded and read (or listened to!) either through the website or an app for your device and has all sorts of extras. It is called Belgravia and the first installment is available now. I just finished reading it this morning and am already hooked! The website is http://www.julianfellowesbelgravia.com I hope you enjoy it as much as I am!

  63. Sue says:

    Hi Susan!

The previous comment kind of answered a question, but I have a “part 2:” Did someone nice buy Holly Oak and are they cherishing it the way you did? Is it near the home you live in now (same town…?). Do you drive by and check on it now and then? It must be a wistful feeling.

I had to FORCE myself to space out my reading to make your wonderful book last for a few days; I definitely would have read it in one sitting otherwise, but even doing it this way it was still over far too quickly. When it ended, it was like a fabulous visit with someone you’ve loved and missed that ends too fast, leaving you all alone again. I miss you already! LOL. I can’t wait for the new edition of the Book That Started it All!

If you get anywhere near Houston on your book tour driving to or from Austin, we’ll roll out the red carpet. I’ll even play hookey from work to play tour guide and I can loan you a black and white kitty for a kitty fix as well.

Again — LOVED the book. Safe travels!
    Sue

    • sbranch says:

Yes to all of your questions in the first paragraph!🌺 Love your offer of a kitty fix because by the time we get to Austin I am going to need one . . . going away is wonderful but coming home is the best. Thank you Sue, I am so happy about the book. As I said inside, “at least I wrote it down.” xoxoxoxo

  64. Gill Smith says:

Congratulations to all the lucky winners! Well done Girls.
Beautiful springtime photos of your garden Susan, spring is my favourite season. Enjoy your packing, not long now for your trip!
    Love Gill xx

  65. Barb from Ohio says:

Congratulations to all the winners! I’m looking forward to the next Willard and all the goodies in it. I finished your book last Sunday eve and I think I like it best of the three; they are all great, don’t get me wrong, but there was just something about Isle of Dreams that made it impossible to put down. I kept wanting to read more to find out how you’d get through and cope with those first months and years by yourselfon the island. Your first glorious experience with a real autumn, hot summer days and the hoards of tourists, and of course the freezing cold New England winters. Holly Oak looked so cozy when you had it all decorated and furnished, but I can see it would have been too small for two people.
Hope you are getting some warm weather this weekend as it is sunny and in low seventies here in Ohio, and no rain for days! Been planting perennials and getting in some much needed outside time. Have fun packing for your trip and I wish you safe travels and sunny skies!

    • sbranch says:

Thank you Barb! Yes, one thing I needed, that I didn’t know I needed, was a studio to work in. The dining room table was fine when I was alone. I wrote 3 books there. Then we moved, and for the first time, at Joe’s suggestion, I got a real art table, with a slanting top . . . because that’s when I finally knew I’d found my “forever” job! Slow starters do not speed up later in life. The stay slow! xoxoxo

  66. Kit says:

Congrats to all the winners! You will just love this book. I am getting to the end of it and want to slow down and savor it more. It is that good! Happy Spring everyone! Kit

  67. Sarah says:

Congratulations to the lucky six! I do think any of us following along with Susan Branch is a big time winner. Your books inspire. I find myself reading and rereading them. We are the same age, so reading your words takes me back to many things in my own life. It’s fun! Love that you intersperse with quotes in your gorgeous script and enhance each page with your whimsical art. Yes, all who read a Susan Branch book wins big time.
I’m doubly excited about Isle of Dreams because you will be here in Austin, and I’ll get to meet you. I’ll be the one with the Courtly Check traveling tote. Miss Merri Mac is extremely excited about meeting you. Perhaps you’ll all a photo her a photo op. You can follow her adventures on hyacinthforthesoul.blogspot.com if interested. She is part of a group of other Courtly Check totes who get out and about and love to share their adventures.
Thanks for the joy…..see you in June!

  68. Paula says:

Loved your post, like I always do, but was happy you talked again about our beloved wisteria! Must admit I am a wee bit jealous of your beautiful blooms. I think I told you in a previous comment mine has never bloomed 🙁 I wonder if that is where the seed pods come from, and maybe that is why I’ve not had those yet. My large pine tree is about 30 yrs. old and getting more light through its branches now so I have hope for future blooms. Wish I’d been a winner of your generous drawing, but feel like a winner with your post! Congrats to all the girlfriends I bet you made their day. I know I’m going on and on as I do, but had to mention how much I love the pic of the wisteria and bare branches with pods framing the door, lovely, bet it is a gorgeous shot when wisteria is covered in blossoms. Thank you dear soul for all your kindness and thoughtful things you do for all of us.

    • sbranch says:

Wisteria does need full sun, in case that pine tree is shading it? I’ve heard this from others. Some people say, run it over with the car! I think I told you about the one in the parking lot where Joe used to work that got hit by cars regularly and seemed to enjoy the attention. Just bloomed like a crazy thing despite all. I don’t know how we got so lucky with ours . . . it was blooming when we got here and our only involvement is to keep it from breaking and entering the upstairs windows and taking over the house! Thank you Paula xoxoxo

      • Paula says:

Ha!! that’s the way it always seems to go, seems sometimes I will see something in someone’s yard that just isn’t into gardening at all and it will be blooming like there is no tomorrow! I bet Mrs. Bodwich is looking down from above and so happy that you two moved into her house and love it and all the wonderful things she planted there. I would be. My Aunt sent me a poem years ago, telling about the love and time put into your garden and when you move on……..would anyone love it as you did? I’ll send a copy to you if I run across the place I put it that I would not forget. LOL!!!! Have a beautiful trip, I bet you’ll see lots of wonderful things. xoxo

        • sbranch says:

I thank Mrs. Bowditch everyday. Some of her things have died, but since we knew they were there, and how beautiful they were, we’ve been able to replace them all so far. The magnolia and the dogwood are two of them!

        • chris consentino says:

oh, my, yes. i’d LOVE to see and enjoy your poem!!!! i’ll ask dear St. Anthony to help you find it. thank you.

  69. VickeyB says:

I am about half-way through your new book, and just loving it. (I am at the part where you have 41 pages of cookbook written and painted–only 9 to go for 50!)

I am puzzling over Cliff’s behavior, and trying to understand why he wouldn’t (couldn’t) let you go, even though HE LET YOU GO! Men!!! Who could possibly understand them???????

I also want to wish you a happy (belated) birthday. I am sorry not to have sent you wishes on your big day: 57 years past 12. I hope you had a wonderful, special day. You deserve it for all the kindnesses you do for all your many girlfriends around the world. We love you!

  70. Karen Lotito says:

Hi Susan, I could hardly put Isle of Dreams down! Holly Oak sounds adorable! Ellie made me think of my dear MIL who was from England she always had afternoon tea and her table was always set with a white linen table cloth and English China. Like you she was one of eight children only she was the baby. People are put into our lives for a reason and they share the gift of themselves with us. Today is beautiful here on Long Island, my kitties are keeping their eyes on the bird feeders. I am awaiting the Rose-Breasted Grosbeak. Have a great Saturday afternoon – two wonderful words if I ever did hear them! Hugs, Karen

  71. Peggy says:

I loved “Isle of Dreams”! I read it quickly which I was not going to do! But, I couldn’t help it. It is a treasure. Thank you! Thank you! I have to ask – what happened to the cottage? I hope someone wonderful is living in it.

    • sbranch says:

The person who has it loves it, that’s for sure! I go by and visit it every so often ~ dropped off a book to the woman who lives there the other day. So she could know its roots.

  72. Patty Lucas says:

So those little black dots could be planted and Wisteria would grow? Our forsythia bloomed and so did my tulips until our little squirrels ate off the top. We feed those little buggers all winter long and this is how they re-paid me. I want some Wisteria in my yard.

    • sbranch says:

Those little black dots pop up all over our yard! So I think they would grow! Bad squirrels!!! Put some hot pepper on your tulips if you have any left.

  73. Rae Ann R. says:

I’m reading “Isle of Dreams” and thinking of you…needing to tell you I am singing along to every song that comes along…you see, we are very close in age…your book starts on my hubby’s birthday in 1982…so I think back to what we were doing then…enjoying our three children ages 9, 6 and 10 months…busy with life…and what pops up when I realize I just have to tell you how much I am love love loving IODreams~a new blog…💐To the lucky girlfriends…almost thought I won when I saw Rachael Anna! Thank you for the beautiful update on spring in your neck of the woods…our snow in northern Michigan is almost gone, we’ve seen our first robin and my lilacs have bitty baby buds. I can smell your wisteria as we had it in Savannah GA when we lived there~deliciousness…back to reading😉…I already don’t want “Isle of Dreams” to end…

  74. Chris says:

Congratulations to all the Winners!! Can’t wait to start reading the new book! Thanks so much Susan, I truly just love your books/blogs etc. xoxo

  75. Patti E. says:

I absolutely loved the book! I hated for it to end. Maybe you can write another book about when you and Joe move to your new white house. 🙂 Until then, I shall re-read them all again! Thanks for sharing your life with us.

    • sbranch says:

I was thinking maybe a novel next time, that way I can make everyone do what I want them to do! Or maybe a cookbook. Or maybe . . . who knows? Thank you back Patti!

  76. Karen Holly says:

Oh Susan, I finished Martha’s Vineyard Isle of Dreams yesterday evening. There is so much I want to write to you about it, but I do not want to spoil things for any other girlfriends. So instead, I will simply scream the following: Little Women, illustrated by Jessie Wilcox Smith!!!!!!! Does life get any better? Thank you as always for your creative genius within! 🙂

    • sbranch says:

You are so good! I know. Wasn’t that wonderful? Thank you Karen! xoxo

      • Karen Holly says:

Susan, I have a quick question for you. What books of quotes do you recommend as additions to a personal library?

        • sbranch says:

Any and all. I really do just get them all. Go to the bookstore and browse, because I can’t imagine you could ever lose no matter which ones you choose. I do love the books that are Quotes for Women, or for Creative People, or for love, or for nature, or Native American quotations, but any and all are good.

  77. CarolK (NJ) says:

You almost had me going showing your wisteria in bloom. I had to look out the back window at mine. Nope, mine is just a barren bunch of sticks. Then I realized those must have been old pictures. Whew! I thought mine had died for a minute there. We had a killing frost last week and it knocked out everyone’s magnolia blossoms but happy to say all the ground flowers survived. Congratulations on all the happy winners of your drawing. I’m in count down mode now for your book signing and tea party in New Hope. Sooooo exciting we’re all winners because we get to meet you in person. Yeaaaaa. Jersey hugs…….

  78. Gloria Nugent says:

I was so thrilled when your new book arrived last week. I forced it to last 3 days just because I was not going to rush it too much…ha. Now I understand more clearly why you enjoy the change of seasons! It was everything I expected with your wonderfully homey style💕Thanks for sharing your new edition with others. Counting the days til I hope to see you in Hudson, Ohio!!

    • sbranch says:

Yes, not growing up with them makes them seem impossible! Little miracles! We’re in one right now! See you in Hudson!

  79. Kathy Madigan (California) says:

Happy Spring, happy trip!! Wish you were going to be in my area! Gifted my
daughter and granddaughter with your new book and they were so excited to
receive it. Can’t wait to start mine!

  80. Ann Y. says:

Congratulations to the winners ! What a treat ! Loved you glimpse of Spring…spent the day washing the winter off of our screen porch since is is going to be so warm this week ! Can’t wait to sit out there and watch the magic happen in the garden. Happy Belated Birthday….celebrate all year and enjoy every moment !

  81. Kay Bennett says:

Your give a ways are so much fun. Congrats to all the winners! Imagine someone from France won! You are now a world wide phenomena. We are all so fortunate to have you in our lives. I share you with my BFF and she sends it on to her daughter. Loved the photos of your wisteria vine and Jack looking out your window. I am going to see if I can grow one here in So Cal. Hope so, would love the fragrance. Have a safe journey🚓! See you in Kansas City next month.

  82. Grace From Barnstable says:

Boo hoo! I’m sorry that Vanna did not pick me but I have a great consolation prize…Isle of Dreams arrived! So far I’m in the middle of Chapter Three and it’s as wonderful as I expected it would be (men may disappoint us but never you, Susan)…and do you know what the best part is? KNOWING it has a happy ending! Happy Spring and safe travels.

It’s my birthday in May and Last year I made the lemon roll cake of yours and put the real flowers on it like you did and it came out just like yours. I was so proud and it was yummy. Have a lovely day.

I remember! Happy almost birthday Linda . . . Maybe a wisteria would be the perfect B-day present!

  84. Patty in Redlands says:

    Dear Susan,
I JUST finished reading Isle of Dreams and have a huge lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. I really did know that you are living happily ever after but I couldn’t wait for the book to tell me so too. Oh how I love your pluck and talent and humility and love of family and friends and and and……. It took me two days of not doing much of anything else to get through it, so now I’ll have to go back for the savoring. Anyway, thank you for writing so beautifully about the life you are living so beautifully. I’ve been a fan since Heart of the Home and that will never change.

Congratulations to the six book winners! Can’t wait to see you again at Vromans.
    XO

  85. bobbie Calgaro says:

Laughing at you crunching pods as there is nothing I have loved more from childhood than crunching fall leaves and winter ice shelves. Know the feeling. Joy! Absolutely loved the book. Such a kindred spirit. We never would have survived in big business. I tried a law firm once it was torture. Schools were about the best I could do. Loved all those little people and introducing them to books and words. Home is so nurturing. I know why the Shakers and the Amish kept their communities small. It gives you a sense of connection and time to do your work thoroughly. I sometimes think we would be all so much better if we thought small instead of mega. But I guess there are different strokes for different folks as the song goes. Once again kudos for the new book, it was stellar and heartwarming!

    • sbranch says:

Me too, ice, leaves, but truly, these pods win for most satisfaction! Lovely words Bobbie. xoxo Thank you!

  86. Ruth Winkler says:

I, too, had to slow down as I could not wait to see the next page, and the next. Thank you, it is a wonderful book. I just love little Holly Oak and of course your Spring Street house. I must now get to reread A Fine Romance to keep reading about you and Joe. My daughter has that book and we will exchange our books soon.

I must say I laughed out loud to read about your stenciling the walls in Holly Oak. Pretty, too, by the way. You must have been so surprised the next day!

  87. Sara says:

I love thee like pudding too, Susan! Homemade butterscotch pudding, to be exact! It doesn’t matter what kind of day or week I’m having, seeing “Susan Branch Blog” in my Inbox means I’ll soon be smiling and thinking about the important things in life, like treasured rock collections and Kitty Kissing, Willard coming and Morning Science.

The mean old winter of 2015 threw my Wisteria into such a terrible fright that it refused to bloom last spring. 🙁 But I have high hopes for this year since it was a mild winter, as winters go for us out here on the frontier. That reminds me, I LOVE your cards! Everyone should have them, seriously!

I received MV Isle of Dreams days ago and have read nary a word–not one word, which definitely is not like me. I didn’t want to start it and have to put it down for any reason, so I’m ‘pulling a Tracy Jones’ tomorrow and likewise parking myself on the couch and daring anyone to bother me until I have read the very last page! 🙂 Don’t you think ‘pulling a Tracy Jones’ has a nice ring to it? Must add it to my favorite phrase repertoire. 🙂

Thank you, Susan, for just being you and bringing such joy into my day. If you could somehow ‘can’ your recipe for joy, you would be a gazillionaire!!

Love you, sweet girl! 🙂 Sara 🙂

    • sbranch says:

Love thee like Pudding Sara! Here’s to a wild blooming of your wisteria! Love having you here! xoxo

  88. Sharon in Fresno says:

Oh Susan, I just finished reading your book, “Marthas’s Vineyard Isle of Dreams.” I loved it so much that I cried when I reached the end. I didn’t want it to EVER, EVER end. I wanted to go on reading your story for days. I couldn’t put it down once I started reading it. I love your writing and how you tell us about a your highs and lows and all your inner struggles of self doubt. Things we as women have all experienced and can relate to. Keep on writing so we can keep on reading about you. I made a copy of the picture of your Wisteria tree and use it as a bookmark. I love your home and your yard. You have made it a heaven on earth. I look forward to seeing you in Morro Bay in May. Be safe on your travels.

    • sbranch says:

Oh Sharon, so sweet. Making me very teary today . . . I can’t wait to see you in Morro Bay!

  89. Mary Whiting says:

    Hi Susan,
My husband and I left Michigan this morning for St Pete Beach and a week of relaxation. As soon as I sat on the plane I began reading your wonderful book and I can’t put it down. What a delicious treat! Your books are works of art and much appreciated by all of us.
I emailed my photos of England last week, (Highclere Castle, Dowager Violet’s home, etc.) with your book in each shot, to the email address you gave me. I hope you saw them. I LOVED seeing the wisteria on the cottages in the Cotswolds…so old fashioned and lovely. I love your home so very much. You are blessed in so many ways and all are well deserved.
Please let me know when you can if you saw the photos of our trip “together” to Downton Abbey. I tried my best to keep you there with us in spirit.
    XO Mary

    • sbranch says:

I didn’t!!! Where did you send them Mary, maybe I just missed them in the flurry of everything! Enjoy your Beach week!

  90. Joyce Howe says:

I have loved all three of the books. When mine arrived last week I thought I would take a peak and then read when I finished my current book. Not so! I took one look and read the entire book in one sitting. It is such a wonderful story with so much honesty and poignancy to it. Thank you for sharing. It makes me want to sit down and write my own story.

  91. Karen says:

    Dearest Susan,
Finished your new book in two days and cried that I was finished. It was simply perfect! Thank you for sharing your amazing life with us. I am forever appreciative 😊.

    Karen

  92. Marilyn says:

I just finished reading your new book. I absolutely loved it. I too did not want it to end. I love the quotes and how they fit in so perfectly with the moment you are portraying. I had a moment there where you found your Johnson Brothers coffee cup with the President’s faces on. I found one last month in our local Goodwill store. It was just like yours only in green. It had a coaster to match as well. I looked on the underside immediately on picking it up and noticed; MT. RUSHMORE…BLACK HILLS…etc.etc. and then FROM: JOHNSON BROS. ENGLAND. I quickly snatched it up and felt prickly all over.. what a find! $2.00. Need I say more? And then I read about your find and how you felt…..I thot….KINDRED SPIRITS. In many ways we think the same….but I grew up in Kansas and have been happily married to my Knight in Shining Armor for 38 blessed years. He is 6″2″, makes the best gravy on earth and humors me in the garden! Aren’t we blessed? Love you, Susan. Thanks for the books and wishing you safe travels.

  93. Elaine in Toronto says:

Congratulations to all the winners. They must be so excited. My friend gave me Isle of Dreams for my birthday in March. It arrived on Thursday and she is visiting tomorrow. I reread Fairytale Girl in preparation. Can’t wait. Thank you, Susan, for sharing your talents with the world. Hugs.

I know, Jack has the wildest eyes sometimes, love when the camera catches them in action! Have fun with your girlfriend and say hello for me! xoxo

  94. Susie (Rocky Point, NY) says:

Congratulations to all six winners! One day I will see my very own name I just know it. I am an optimist after all. Loved seeing the Wisteria and the seeds of happiness. I recently had a short jaunt in the hospital for 9 days (!!). During that time my much coveted SB book arrived at my house. My sister asked me “Want me to keep it here for you or bring it to you to read there?” I said “both”. I could not decide such a thing. So my sister brought it to me where I opened it like Christmas morning and dared to look at the covers and inside pages. Too exciting. So big! So wonderful! I placed it back into the mailer and had my sister return it to my home for my return to savor. I did not want anyone to carelessly spill something, or touch it (heavens forbid!). It’s mine, all mine, I tell ya! So now I am home fully anticipating my book reading.

  95. Carol Sferra says:

I was so excited to get my book!!!

  96. Aloyce Levin says:

    Dear Susan,
So delightful to read your blog as always. Received your book last week and started in almost immediately. Yesterday we had a power outage due to high winds. So I did the brave thing-washed with cold water, dressed and took myself to our darling Larchmont Village a short distance away. We love the Le Pain Quotidien there. I ordered the all important cappuccino and a bowl of steel cut oatmeal with fresh berries and steamed milk. I brought your book to finish. I had been up in the middle of the night reading too.
Of course I loved every single, “enchanting” page. It completed the perfect trilogy. I’m hoping to come to the signing at Vroman’s in Pasadena in June. Not sure how my 9 year old grandson will feel about it, but his Nana is not above bribes.
In July my husband Mark and eldest daughter, Michele are spending the entire month in a small village in Provence. I’m planning to try my hand at water colors and plan to paint every bit of lavender I can get my hands on! Thank you for the inspiration. I grew up in Culver City and graduated with the class of 1965. A drive to Reseda involved driving through the Sepulveda pass-remember?
Have a wonderful two month journey!
    Aloyce

    • sbranch says:

Yes, we’re townies! How nice. I love that you took your book out to a restaurant. A joy of life, reading in restaurants as incognito person! Enjoy your painting! Lavender, perfect subject!

  97. Mary Dersch says:

It is finally a warm spring day in East Grand Rapids, Michigan! Flowers are popping out and so are my toes! Flip flops, daffodils and wide open windows today <3 A joy to read your blog. And great working for a library where your books are so enjoyed!

  98. Donna (Southern California) says:

Thank you, Susan, for your generous give-aways…they’re just so much fun! Congratulations to the six winning girlfriends! I’m patiently waiting until I see you at the book signing at Vroman’s in Pasadena, CA, when I can get my copy from you in person. June can’t come soon enough! Until then, have a wonderful time traveling with your sweet Joe.

  99. Susan S. says:

Congrats to all the lucky winners. And, I purchased your new book this week so it should arrive soon! Can’t wait to read it and see all the BEAUTIFUL artwork. Happy weekend everyone! 🙂
