HOME AT LAST

Hi Everyone! How are you?  We are home safe and sound, and happy, so happy to be here. Here are just a few photos of our family reunion at Vallecito Lake, “a beautiful spot, surrounded in tall pines, sheltered in a secluded mountain valley” at 8,000 feet,  just outside of Durango, Colorado, and more proof that . . .heaven

IMG_3578

This was the moon-set at 5 am across the lake the morning we drove away, all packed up and heading back for the train and home.  Stopped in the dark, tires in gravel, in the cool mountain air, with lake lapping on shore, for this photo of paradise.

Here’s just one of the jillions of group photos we took . . . My fandamly, not all, but lots. The kind of fandamly that likes to stand in freezing water. Note who’s not in picture.

My nephew Ben, arriving with the “equipment.”

IMG_3489

In this very lovely, spiritual place which has been a gathering place for us for years . . . ever since my brother Jim moved here years ago . . . the lake is  surrounded in wildflowers . . .

reunion

Where we did what we always do, we ate, we told stories, we sang . . . this is my brother Chuck dancing with my niece Heidi, daughter of my other brother Brad, at the campground.  Chuck sang too, songs he wrote ~ one of my favorites that I requested so I could record it for you ~ is a sad song called “To Be a Man” (not about my dad) . . . want to hear it? Listen close to the words . . .

IMG_3195

And lucky me . . . these are the three “kids” that Joe and I took to England and Paris on the Queen Elizabeth 2 in 2001, when, from left, Heidi was 11, Holly was 12, and Matty was 18. That’s Auntie Mame in the middle there, basking.

IMG_3577

More wonderful moments than I can tell . . . Shelly’s twins, Paden and Mason, and my great nephews, Ben’s boys, Wyler and Beckett.

Mas Musica? Something old, something wonderful . . .

IMG_3163

This was our cabin with the screened in porch … at Croll Cabins, right next to 5 Branches campsites … perfect for a family reunion ~ you could have a cabin, or set up a tent, or bring your camper, park next to the lake, and walk to each other’s places. It was heaven.

More wildflowers in the campground.

And now, before we talk about an important birthday celebration, and have a new giveaway ~ I just want to say thank you . . . your 900 comments in the last post were so beautiful!💛 When I was sad and missing my dear Dad, Jack to some, Blog Daddy to many, but John Patrick Stewart, Jr. in real life, all I had to do was read your words, filled with comforting, loving, life affirmations and I felt so much better! My dad would have loved them too. 💕 He so enjoyed reading your comments.Girl saying thank youT H A N K    Y O U

But I want to add my own respects and admiration to the many voices (you can read some of them at the Beatrix Potter Society, and become a member like me! They send the most wonderful newsletters, both online and in the mail, and there’s more information about the celebrations HERE  and HERE and good shopping for BP stuff, HERE), and it all keeps coming. Because she was truly something else.

IMG_5217

As most of you know . . . I took a trip to see Beatrix’s famous Hilltop Farm a while back, something I’d wanted to do for many years. And it was everything I’d hoped it would be, filled with the little bits of her life that she saved just for us, so that someday we could go there and be in the presence of magic.3318082

leaf borderMost everyone knows about her “little bunny books” and that they are the best selling children’s books of all time . . . and that they started with her illustrated letters like this one below that she wrote to the children of her former governess . . .

Beatrix potter

Many words have been written, both by her and even more, ABOUT her including a wonderful movie I know you would love, Miss Potter (if you haven’t already seen it). 👏 But her charming books are only the beginning of what made Beatrix so very special.

Beatrix Potter

Peter RabbitBefore she ever wrote a book, Beatrix was a serious scientist whose discoveries were summarily dismissed by the scientific community, simply because she was a woman ~ this was Victorian England where women were not supposed to be scientists (or much of anything else).  Her scientific discoveries were a fascinating part of her story ~ she discovered something which is still viable today, but the loss to the scientific world was nothing compared to what she was able to offer through her creative love of nature to the imaginations of children the world over, when she picked herself up, dusted herself off, and self-published her first book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit. And the rest is history herstory.Nature!get-attachment.aspx

Because the story didn’t end at that misogynistic defeat, nor even at the glorious success of her books, she was just beginning to find her true place where she would leave her real legacy. When she lost her first love, she was inspired to buy a small farm in the Lake District of northern England, a place she’d been drawn to since she was a child. And, not long after, she left book writing behind her and found a new passion in farming and raising sheep, preserving a breed that was almost extinct. She loved the old ways and bought her potter-quotefurniture for Hilltop at barn sales and auctions. She hand-embroidered her own bed coverings and never put electricity in her house, so you can just imagine the quiet sounds of birdsong and wind and snow fall and teacup-in-saucer noises that she spent her life enjoying. And she took her bunny-book money and bought 14 farms and over 4,000 acres of the Lake District to keep them from the greedy hands of developers. 👏 And she helped to start the National Trust. She married late and was happy with her husband for 30 years. If you’d like to read more about Beatrix Potter, try the wonderful biography by Linda Lear, Beatrix Potter, the Extraordinary Life of a Victorian Genius. stripofflowersget-attachment.aspx

Beatrix saved this land for forever enjoyment because she was far-thinking, not just thinking about today, but thinking about forever. She was ahead of her time, and  Inlovewithnature

Village of Near Sawrey

This is her little town of Far Sawrey in the Lake District where she made her home with her husband in that house on the far right of this photo. When you walk there, you walk where she walked, and really, nothing much has changed. I can’t wait to go back. Just to breathe that rarified air.

On the way to Near Sawrey

We’re going in the fall and I can’t wait to see the colors. . . we’ve only been in the springtime ….

IMG_4086

Some of us discover Beatrix through her books, some learn about her through the National Trust, but I came to her through her little figurines, my “Beatrix Potter people,” which I found in my early 20s and have been in every place I’ve lived since then ~ I fell in love with the colors and the charm of her little critters, beautifully made in Beswick, England in the 40s and 50s.

IMG_3198

Her life, once I learned about the things she did, as been an inspiration for me. I would love to do what she did.   And all those wonderful animal figurines but, surprisingly, no lambs! So I painted this one in her honor.

IMG_5510

And these are my People . . .  some of them, there are more in other parts of the house, (and more in our webstore that I gathered as we drove across country) this is a gathering of the minds.  They are coming together to have a little tea party to celebrate Beatrix.  They made a cake . . .

We’ll do the drawing after I get back from Cape Cod where I’m going on Thursday, on Beatrix Potter’s actual birthday, to celebrate her life at the Brewster Ladies Library with the Beatrix Potter Society and 400 like-minded Girlfriends where I will be reading the story of my first trip to Hilltop from my book and signing A Fine Romance Falling in Love with the English Countryside. So excited! And humbled. and thrilled. And will probably cry.

Hello you adorable thing.  . . if anyone will be on the Island on the 25th of August, I’ll be doing my last talk and signing in the USA (for this year) for Martha’s Vineyard, Isle of Dreams, for the Aquinnah Library at the Old Town Hall in Aquinnah at 5 pm. 📚 It’s free, so you would just show up and voila!

THANK YOU GIRLFRIENDS.  For everything.  Have the most wonderful day! XOXO 💚 Love you!home

Hi Sue and Joe – you two look so wonderful, happy and rested. Have a great rest of the summer !!! Happy Birthday Beatrix.

  2. Dearest Sue! How I’ve missed you! Thank you for this lovely post…and a new recipe! I have my flour sifter, just like the one you painted, that I acquired from your webstore. Now I’m motivated;) The book you are giving away, is precious! And if it came my way, I would tuck it in a special place …and dream of an adventure there. One of these days….
I have kept you in my thoughts and prayers, upon hearing the news of your dear dad. Every Sunday, I sit next to mine, and I reach for his big hand and hold on to it every chance I can. We pass the communion plate, and I have tears. I can’t imagine what I will do… He was so sick this last winter and hospitalized for MRSA pneumonia and then discovered he had malaria. He shouldn’t be here, now. We’ve been granted a miracle. Just know how very much my heart is with you.
My dear friend Linnie will be at your book signing tomorrow and I can’t wait for you to meet her, in person! She made the icecream and chocolate sauce at the kindred spirit gathering for Tasha Tidors 100th birthday celebration last summer. She is a treasure! And I will be there in spirit….sending hugs and love. Xoxo
    Always,
    Christie from Franklin, Tennessee

  3. Dear Susan, I remember my family gathering after our Dad’s passing and know a bit of what you must have experienced with yours–it will be life-changing for someone I’m sure–especially the younger generation.

I’ve been celebrating Beatrix Potter every month by using her books to help me learn to illustrate and paint and, coincidently, Jemima has been my guide! By the end of the year I should have embodied at least a bit of her spirit. I’m so glad you found the little Walking With Beatrix book helpful! I already have a copy, but if I should win your autographed copy I will take it to mean I shall one day get to actually use it!

So enjoyed reading your blog this morning about family, camping, nature, England, Beatrix and coffee cake, my favorite things. 🙂 I am looking forward to a long trip to England someday. I subscribe to This England feed on Facebook and everyday there is a photo more beautiful than the last of that magical country. You and Miss Potter have both inspired me to take up watercolor and it has been pure joy. Welcome back from your travels.

  6. Kate says:

Oh, yes! I’d love to be entered, as I plan on visiting there next year! Thanks so much!

  7. Trish K says:

I simply adore Beatrix Potter. Whether it be the amazing characters in her books or her wonderful work with the National Trust as Mrs. Heelis, I admire her mind, talent, artistry and foresight in making the world a better place.

  11. Kathy says:

    Good Morning,
So happy to hear you are home safe and sound…..nothing like being home! I met you twice on your tour this year….once in New Hope, Pa ( we stayed in the same Inn) and once just by chance (my sister and I were staying Asheville, NC after visiting my niece in Mississippi and a two day stay in Nashville). I promised Joe that I wasn’t a stalker when I found out once again we were staying in the same hotel! We came once again to the book signing that night and my sister bought your cookbook for a fellow school teacher who loves to cook…..and again, I have a picture with you…..who would have thought!!!! My sister and I are even in some of your Blog photos from Asheville! I’m sure you didn’t have time but if you ever have a chance to get back to Asheville, you have to visit the Biltmore! America’s version of Downton Abbey.

  12. Amy from Wisconsin says:

So happy you made it home, safe and sound and with more beautiful memories of you and your family together in nature!

Your writings are treasures to be read again and again.

  16. Katie W. says:

Welcome back, Susan! Thank you for giving us a little background on Beatrix Potter. I have always admired her work but was unaware of her contributions to science. I will be adding “Miss Potter” to my list of movies to watch this weekend…perhaps while eating that delicious looking tea cake ;-).

  17. Maria Touet says:

That is a lovely and very generous giveaway, one of your own BP collectibles. She is very sweet.
    Have a great day!

  18. matty says:

To be remembered for such wonderful things, all done while one was just making their way for what was important to them, would be evidence of a life well lived. Beatrix certainly set the example, didn’t she??

  19. Becky Compton says:

Such a lovely post…thank you! Hang in there girl! Have fun at the Beatrix Potter’s Birthday Party! Love, Becky in hot OK

  20. Hilda says:

What a year it has been for you thus far, Susan! …And it’s only July!!
Your blog, books, ‘Willards’ are a feast for the eyes and an escape for my dreamy mind. And to think of what is coming this fall! Whew!!
Thank you, with sincere and warmest regard.

  21. Karen C. says:

Oh my, what a wonderful giveaway!! You are too generous. I’m so glad you made it home safe and sound. Lots of good thoughts and prayers have been coming your way. I too love Beatrix Potter. What an amazing woman. I hope to visit Hilltop one day but till then I’m so grateful to be able to see it through your eyes and words. Thank You!! All the best and stay cool :-))

  22. Good morning, Susan! Your time in the mountains looks so restorative–nature is so good for that. So is family 🙂 My husband and I have camped several times at Wheeler Peak in Nevada, and it’s an amazing experience: awesome, energizing, a bit frightening (the mountain wind can really howl!), and yet peaceful. Looking forward to reading about your next travel adventures.

  23. Linda "Who Still Says Land !" says:

Welcome home, Susan. My daughter Kimberly (visiting me in Massachusetts from Florida) and I look forward to attending your reading and book signing on Cape Cod at the Brewster Ladies Library to celebrate the 150th birthday anniversary of Beatrix Potter. Your posting about family time in Colorado is wonderful. The lakeside setting is a beautiful place to rejoice in treasured memories while creating new.

  24. Amy says:

Enjoy being home!!! Just got the new Heart of the Home and was already looking forward to making the cranberry cake. Looks so yummy! Enjoy your day!

  25. Deb W says:

As much good stuff as there is in this post…… sorry to jump the gun….. and change topics ……. but I’ve been squirming in my seat, waiting to talk about this for MONTHS…. the big trip to England and Scotland this Fall!!! I know you touched on it here, but I’ve been SO excited about ‘our’ (virtual) trip!! Is the itinerary planning a completely joint effort between you and Joe? Is one a real researcher, while the other is, “oh, I think I would like to see…” Will there be many re-visits, or lots of new places? Will you drive again, or try out the ‘twains’ while you are there?

I don’t watch much TV, but I do enjoy YouTube, largely because I can find so many English TV Shows there! Have you ever seen ‘Escape to the Country?’ – like the American ‘House Hunters,’ but infinitely more polite, and – the big draw for me – a chance to peek inside the houses and see the gorgeous countryside in the various parts of the UK. Likewise (Sir) Tony Robinson’s show, ‘Walking Through History’ – he takes loooooong (45 miles!) walks through the countryside, and teaches us about the history of the place along the way.

I’ve gone on too long, but l’ll be hanging on for every scrap of info and itinerary you unveil before we cast off and ship out!

  26. Shawnee Moschiano says:

I just got home from a lovely visit with family also…..New England area. Love your pictures and posts…..Crossing my fingers that “Vanna” will pick me! 1948 is a special year for me~

  27. Barbara Weaver says:

Welcome back! My day started off well with this new blog. Loved it! Reading the blog always brings joy to my day.

  28. Nancy Roth says:

Hi Susan, thank you for the wonderful post. Your family gathering was music to your soul. And Happy Birthday to Beatrux Potter; she is an I spiration to all! Have a great day!

  29. Cindy Orlowski says:

What a treat to find your lovely blog this morning, and all the pics. The moon set, especially, is just breathtaking. So glad you had such a wonderful, and much needed, time with your family. But it’s good to have you back. Welcome home!

  30. Carol Arrowsmith says:

Welcome home Susan and Joe! Love that you love Beatrix Potter. I just saw the film with Renee Z. last week, and highly recommend it too. Have a great time on the Cape!

  31. Maria says:

Thank you for the new post. I’m waiting for my delivery today of Fine Romance and Fairy Tale Girl. In the mean time I’m enjoying your Autumn book and browsing you’re old posts. Summer is a nostalgic time for me ( and spring and fall and winter…) so I’m enjoying my Summer of Susan Branch🌸

  32. shari harniss says:

I would love to have that beautiful book and duck! Thanks for the chance to win!

  33. Kathy S says:

Thank you Susan, for the opportunity to win this wonderful book. The Lake District is the #1 spot on my Places I Need to Experience list! It would make my dreaming so much more detailed! And Jemima…..I would take her with me!

  34. Marcia says:

What an eventful summer this has been for you, full of joys and sorrows. The picture of your niece Trisha looks so very much like your father; it’s wonderful that your family has been able to keep such close ties. Because you have opened your life (and arms) to us, there are legions who feel we know you, and when you laugh or shed tears, you are joined by thousands who care deeply for you.

  35. Anne D.S. says:

Thanks for sharing the Colorado Campout with your family. A peaceful gathering in the woods—the world needs many more of these! It looks a bit like my own extended family at their camp in Isle LaMotte, Vermont! The water in Lake Champlain is cold and, like you, I happily take photos from the shore!
Happy Birthday, Beatrix Potter! Sue, she would love you!

  36. Christie Levin says:

Dear Susan, Each time you arrive home safe and sound from one of your many adventures, a mighty collective sigh of relief echoes across the land, from sea to shining sea (can you hear it out there on the island?). We love going along with you and we love experiencing your homecomings with you ~ coming or going, we love having a view of life from your perspective. Speaking of views, that photo of the moon setting over the lake!!! What a gorgeous, perfect location for a family gathering! Thanks again for inviting us along. xoxo

  37. Melissa (from eastern PA: formerly of the Midwest) says:

What a treat that would be!
When my son was 3 years old he could quote, word by word, “The Tale of Peter Rabbit”. We would get the book and Cassette recording from the library so many times, he had it memorized! It was so cute to hear a little 3 year old say such long words….”Peter was most dreadfully frightened”!

  38. Julie Lindsay says:

Happy Birthday Beatrix Potter! Wouldn’t you just love to have her to tea, just for 1 afternoon. She was way ahead of her time.
    Julie

  39. Rose says:

It is so glad to have you back on the blog. Your vacation with your family looked wonderful—love the giant inflatable swan! You certainly have had the year of a lifetime this year and we have loved enjoying it with you.

  43. Gale Jourdet says:

Thank you Susan Branch…..for the dose of happiness and positivity that starts many mornings for me and reminds me that the littlest things in life the things that give our life meaning are there for “the taking.” You slow me down from my daily schedule and make me focus on what’s simply right in front of me. Slowing down is a form of really seeing and a lesson in gratitude. Thank you, thank you Susan B. ……you have been like a teacher to all of us, and a mommy, sister, and dear friend, all in one. Your voice in your writing is so real…you “write,”…. but we “listen.”
Thank you…..reading your blog and your books is a time of real pleasure for me. A treat!
I know others feel the same.
    Sending you a hug today,

    Hello Susan:
So delighted to see your blog today! I look each morning at the start of the day and was delighted to see what a happy time your family reunion was.

I had not realized that Ms Potter was a scientist as well as an environmentalist, author, artist. I will have to get more involved with her life story, thanks to you. I would think that she would have been very pleased to know that the US has a woman as presidential candidate. So Hoorays for all of us who can now share all of our talents in a world so in need of them all. thank you for keeping Beatrice Potter’s life alive in the minds and hearts of your readers. Fondly, Marty

I’ve already read “Isle of Dreams” three times, and each time makes me want to visit Cape Cod and go exploring to find Holly Oak. I’m afraid I’d never want to leave! I can’t wait to see the pictures of Hilltop Farm in the fall when you and Joe return. You do lead a charmed life and we’re all so blessed that you share it with us!

  65. Kathleen in Michigan says:

Thank you Susan. For sharing your life’s joys and sorrows with all your “girlfriends”. I love reading your blog and check daily for a new update. We share your heartbreak on the death of your father. Because even as adults losing a parent is painful. Thank you again.

  72. Tina Marie says:

I am so glad for you that your family was able to come together and just enjoy each other. That is a precious gift that some of us are lucky enough to have our parents leave us. I love your Beatrix Potter people, I now search every antique shop trying to spy them as I look for treasures. Over a year ago I started my own sheep herd to keep my aging horse company and they provide me with such goofy antics that make me happy every day. Thanks for sharing and all the inspiration.

Susan – so glad to see you are back to your island home…..and that you had that quality time with family…..
in the past few weeks, I have read all 3 books! (re-reading “A Fine Romance”)….so wonderful-here is a nosy question but one I feel like my imagination can’t even begin to answer! Is HollyOak still yours? How did you make the decision to move it on to other buyers? What an encouraging read, to see how you transformed that tiny cottage into your home…..wishing you time to breathe in that salt air….thanks for all you are and do…..

  75. Carol from Indy says:

    Welcome home, dear lady.
I can just imagine how happy you are to back on the island and hopefully having time to putter and tidy and garden. I could never be away from home as long as you and Joe have been. I would be homesick by day 4! I am so content with a quiet life by my hearth, a good cup of tea and my loving husband. (I believe I would make an excellent Hobbit!:-)
Take care and thank you for your wonderful, ‘breath of fresh air’ optimism. So needed these days. ( Is the DNC done yet?!?!?!)
    Blessings~
    Carol

  76. Barbara Bushnell says:

I always loved your calendars but just this year, in retirement, I found your books and have devoured all 3. Because of you, I have started a family album with photos and stories I remember as a gift to my son and his son. I’ve even tried my hand at doodling and started collecting quotes to include in my family’s story. Thank you for being my inspiration. Coincidently, I’m also going to the Lake District in September which was planned pre-SB book adoration. I think this all started when I saw and ordered a mint P Potter coin for the birth of my first grandson. In such a short time you have brought such joy to my quiet life of retirement, reading, travel, gardening and learning to cook with real ingredients. Thank you!

  77. Steph D says:

Isn’t it so interesting how creative she was? Don’t you wonder if the lack of electricity gave her more time to sit and think up brilliant ideas? Sometimes I think our stream of distractions keep us from using our brains more! 😀

  78. Jill Gantz says:

Thank you, Susan for always being an inspiration. I signed up for Twitter just so I could get your “Tweets”…such fun…feels like we are truly friends!~Charm Bracelet Jill in MO

Thank you, Susan, for the cooling photos and memories of your trip to England, as we sit (hopefully) in the sweltering heat. I know it’s been a bit soggy in England this summer, but I’d take it any day over the dry and parching heat we’ve had this summer. We are all looking forward to traveling with you vicariously this autumn! Stay safe!

  85. Chy says:

Love your updates. So much to read! I started and realized I have an appointment but know I can catch up later.

P.s. We have a Beckett too!! My son in law says he’s named after a baseball player. We say he’s named after the poet!

  86. Sherri McShane says:

I have been a fan of Beatrix Potter since I was a little girl and heard my mom read the stories of that rascal, Peter. I continued the tradition with my own children, with whom I explored more of Miss Potter’s precious stories, including my personal favorite, Jemima Puddleduck. My kids and I thought she might have relatives that we were feeding at our city pond! Now, as Grammie to three darling grands, I read those same stories and feel the thrill over again!

  87. Georganna says:

Hi Susan — I’m so very very sorry for your loss – losing one’s daddy is just utterly crushing. It’s wonderful to see the beautiful story of his legacy in your family reunion photos. What a great family you have.
My son used to live at Lake Vallecito — magical beautiful place, isn’t it? I wish I was there right now instead of Depot Stove, Tx 😕.
Love all the B. Potter as always, and had to tell you there’s an Etsy shop that sells hand dyed yarns inspired by her characters. I think you knit, right? Anyway, I just bought a skein of the Mrs. Tiggywinkle colorway for making socks. It’s beautiful. Here’s her shop addy if you’re interested — etsy.com/shop/ElmTreeYarns.
Wishing you many happy slow restful summer days,
    Georganna ❤️✨🌹

  88. Danielle says:

    Hi Susan,
I am looking forward to you talk in Brewster tomorrow. Me, like so many have been inspired by Beatrix and moved to tears sometimes when I think about it. I’ve never been to the late district but it’s on the top of my bucket list for when I take my dream to England one day! Thank you for your lovely post. As always, you made my day! ♥♥♥

  89. kay walker says:

It feels like you’ve been gone forever. I hope you have time for some rest before you start another great adventure across the pond.

How wonderful that you were able to celebrate your father’s life with your family. And then to celebrate Beatrix. Our next trip to England must include some of her walks. Thank you for your most interesting blog and your wonderful books. Looking forward to your visit to Scotland.

  93. Patty in Redlands says:

“Home was never sweeter than now” is the perfect quote to end this wonderful chapter of your story. Thank you for sharing your family’s reunion pictures in that beautiful setting, the cranberry tea cake recipe, and your Beatrix Potter tribute. And thank you for the opportunity to win those BP treasures too! Glad that you’re home, Susan!

  94. Lori says:

I love Beatrix Potter and read every book I can find about her life and work.

  95. Charis Miller says:

I love Beatrix Potter! I think partly because my mother loved her, and all things Beatrix remind me of mom. I have several of the figurines, but I don’t have Jemima! Thank you, Susan for being an inspiration to me and helping keep perspective and focus on the good things in life.

  96. Julie V from Springfield, MO says:

Susan it is so good to have you back home safe & sound ( Joe too!) I bet there are two very happy kitties at your house. Thanks for sharing the fun pics of your family reunion. I am also a big fan of Beatrix Potter and always enjoy your photos and insights. I too find her to be very inspiring and love her beautiful watercolors. The book and figurine would be cherished treasures! I have starting to collect the figurines and only have two so Jemima Puddleduck would be most welcome. Enjoy the rest of summer and I look forward to following you and Joe around England this autumn.

  99. Lois Rehm says:

Thanks, Susan, for this heart-warming post. How wonderful for you to have had the restorative time with your family. I’m sure you all drew strength from each other.

I experienced a feeling of comfort and relief knowing you’re safely back on the island in your domestic routines, even if you have more travel coming up–like when my mom would come home after being gone for awhile and all would be calm and under control again. Enjoy your remaining summer days on MV.

When I look at pictures of the Lake District, I feel like it’s a long lost home. My ancestors are from England, so maybe my DNA is reacting to some long buried visceral memory! My first name was originally a surname, English as can be! I hope, really, really hope I win this drawing!
