TICK-TOCK . . .

I can’t believe it, here we are, at the end of August already and all I can say is, tick-tock, how did we get here so soon, and OH GOODIE!MUSICA! I have been suffering from this hot and sticky August that seemingly will not end . . . I’m ready to move on! Love the quote, “There are only two seasons, Autumn, and waiting for Autumn!” Fits me to a T, especially right this moment. And then, a couple of days ago, at the top of my suffering, I accidentally did a happy thing . . . I opened up my Autumn Book, just to take a look. As I turned the pages a thrill went through my heart, and I realized, it’s almost here! My favorite time of year!

So I went and got some sunflowers . . . and cut marigolds from the garden for little vases . . . because

It perked me right up! Changed everything! Sweaters are coming! Leaves! Crisp air! Corn Pudding! Makes me almost want to go on a diet. That’s how perky I feel! (“Almost” being the operative word, I am not done with toast and peanut butter yet!)
I know, not everyone looks forward to cold weather, but I love having a reason to heat up the oven and bake something! And in my glee, I planned the rest of the year: first a long breezy, colorful autumn (and can we have a normal Halloween? Why not? Everyone wears masks anyway!👺 That will cheer everyone up! The kids will be thrilled!), leaves blowing through the woods on our walk, crisp salt air off the water, quilts airing in the breeze, more cozy covers on the bed, church bells ringing and boat whistles blowing, and then a short, cozy, snow-white winter around the fireplace, with a new Christmas book and a new puzzle to do during the winter, which will be SO short I’ll have to hurry! And then, an early burst of the most flowery spring ever ~ in a brand new world filled with fresh beginnings! Covid gone, children going to school, everyone back to work, Easter egg hunts! Kitchen table Tea with girlfriends, with new remembrance, respect, and deep gratitude …

While all these nice thoughts were brewing in my head … My cups arrived on the kitchen porch!!! I’ve been waiting! I hope you got yours too … if not, you should soon. We had a little slow-down at the PO, so if you ordered one, and don’t have it yet, it’s definitely on the way!❤️

And then there’s this happy thing. Joe is outside building us a 12′ picnic table, in two pieces, one 8′ and one 4′ … so we can have a party of six for dinner, a couple at each end, and one in the middle for starry September evenings! Just planned our first one for this Friday Night!👏 I’m cooking! Joe’s grilling! Keeping our sunny-sides up.💖

Now what’s this you may be asking. It’s a surprise! Another unexpected book! It will be called Distilled Genius, Wisdom of the World, Words to Live By, (or something like that) and contain my forty-year collection of brilliant quotes from the ages, gathered into categories as I have them here in my Studio, such as Courage, Tea, Gratitude, Gardens, Happiness, all onto pages like these . . .. . . whole genius sections about Love, Dreams, Time, Girlfriends, Cooking, Creativity, Earth, Fairy Tales, Beauty . . . so on and so on… Look how cute it’s going to be! I have about 40 pages done so far. I’ve been asked to do this for years, and I do think it needs to be here for the future! Everything that has ever mattered has been beautifully said by someone whose attestment has teeth, from Marcus Aurelius, to Mark Twain, Black Elk, Rumi, Langston Hughes, C.S. Eliot, Churchill, and the Bible, to Louisa May Alcott, Toni Morrison, Shakespeare, Dickens, Anne Frank, Lincoln, and so many more … plus, plenty from that prolific genius, Anon… and lots from people with less familiar names, whose smart, funny, wise, and touching words inspire curiosity, and open whole new worlds that lie beyond them. I’ve always read quote books like novels! I hope this book will be finished for that wonderful spring I’ve been thinking about. More hope in a time of need. May have to be two books, might even be three, still waiting to see! I know, I have next year’s calendars to do, and my wonderful book, Enchanted to work on, and lots of blog posts and Zoom events and dinners to cook, and Joe and Jack, and the House of Creativity, and all those other ideas, but here I am, Girls, 73, and there is still so very much I want to do!Some of you will remember that I did my very first Zoom Webinar last week. First I had to learn how to do a Power Point slide show. That about killed me. But at the last moment, it sunk in, and I found out just how easy it is to do. All about pushing the right buttons. Then I had to write about the photos, ⬆️ that’s me reading over old diaries to make sure I had the details right ~ it was a Calgon Zoom Party, took us far, far away, back to the English Countryside! And THEN, there was a week of daily Zoom practice with the encouragement of Andrea, the wonderful person who had extended the invitation for me to speak. We got to know each other pretty well! She was very patient!

We ended up doing the same program two days in a row, because the Zoom Room had gotten so full. I knew lots of you were there, because I got pictures! This one above is from our Girlfriend Mary Brehm! She has sweet peas!

This one came from Karen England and her Kitty . . . so fun to be in everyone’s houses!

This one is from Trahlyta! I got so many wonderful photos from you guys! Thank you! The program lasted about an hour and 15 minutes. I know some of you wanted to join in, but could not ~ so, as promised, here’s a link so you can see it yourself on Youtube. In the beginning, it’s just me staring at the screen, watching the names of attendees scrolling by really fast … such a fun thing to see, so many I recognized. I wish that part showed so you could read them too … but instead you just have to watch me staring at them and saying them out loud. Might want to skip that part!IN THE MEANTIME. Guess what? There are going to be more Zoom parties. In the column on the right of this Blog
you’ll see EVENTS. Here is the Link for it, but you can get there yourself when you need to check back for new event dates. I’m about to add more, so watch for them so you can register and receive an invitation to join.

The next one will be a Sunday Afternoon Christmas Tea Party presented by the wonderful people at Titcombs Bookshop, just over the water on the Cape, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm EST on September 20 ~ BYO Tea because you’re all invited to my first virtual book event for my new Home for Christmas book! Here’s where you can sign up! If you don’t know how to do Zoom, you can Google “Youtube how to use Zoom” and they will show you. It’s just a matter of which buttons to push ~ it’s easy. When you sign up, they will send you an invitation to our zoom party … which will have a link for you to click on the day of the event. Put it on your calendar! One flower stands out on Martha’s Vineyard, it’s the hydrangea… they are everywhere! Drive up and down the streets and that’s what you see. We moved these from another part of the garden last year, and I’m so glad we did. Aren’t they romantic? They’re just starting to turn pale pink, something they do in the fall . . . and now we can see them from the kitchen windows from this dear old house I have loved for so long.💞

We’re still going on our walk everyday … joy of life.

It’s been very warm . . . sometimes we have to cut our way through the air, it’s so thick . . . but it’s nothing like what our California Girlfriends are suffering. We pray for them every day. You too, Girlfriends in Iowa, we know about that crazy storm that shot through your state. And now, 11′ storm surges in Louisiana.😢 🙏 2020 is some kind of year!⚡️ We were spared the other night, we were told to hunker down and expect one-inch hail ~ it got very dark out there, but it never came! Thank God. Deep breath, ahhhhhh. Remembering how much we have to be grateful for.

The woods are still green as Sherwood Forest, but every so often there are tell-tale signs that change is on the way with bright spots like this one!

And now, look, I had to show you this sweet letter I got from someone writing about our DamPanic, Go. Be. Love. postcards! Made my day!

Dear Susan, Several weeks ago I purchased a package of your “Go. Be. Love” postcards and sent them to a number of friends. Oh, my gosh! I send lots of cards and notes and have never received so many oohs and ahhs over a card I sent. My dear friends loved the postcard and just showered me with compliments and thanks. You deserve all of the credit. You created the perfect greeting to send during this pandemic and I am so grateful to be a longtime fan and follower and saw them in your online shop. Stay safe and well. Sincerely, Marge

Just in cases YOU might need to be “showered with compliments and thanks” I thought I would share this! And the New Pumpkin Go. Be. Love. postcards came in too …

I had this pumpkin postcard printed in honor of what our Great Grandmothers did for us only a hundred years ago this August 18th!💖 Joe carved that Halloween pumpkin a few years back for our front window  ~ I thought it would be a good way to celebrate those brave and determined women, mothers, sisters, grandmothers, and best friends (and men too), who put themselves out there in a very big way for US! We should never take it for granted … they went through some very difficult and dangerous years, to make it happen!👏 Yes, Jack . . . And one more thing . . .In case YOU too need something sweet and homey to inspire you with my wind-in-the-trees formula for cozy, Kellee just put my Autumn book up at 25% off until midnight on Labor Day! You probably already have it, but maybe not, and maybe you need a gift for a friend!🍂

And for you?

Time for a good Giveaway, don’t you agree? I think this is the perfect place to thank all of you for sticking with us through thick and thin and dampanic too, for me and for Kellee and Sheri, your kindness has meant the world to us over the years, going to work is a gift because of you, but especially these last months, you have no idea what a positive force you are. All you have to do is read the comments to know what lovely kindred spirits visit here. No matter where in the world you are, we have so much in common, I’m very proud of us.💖 Thank you.

So we’ll start here . . . 3 cups, 3 winners! As you know, these cups are mostly sold out now, but we saved these to surprise someone(s) ~ I hope one of them is YOU! Just leave a comment right at the bottom of this post, click on the teeny grey letters that say “comments,” leave a few words, and you will be automatically entered for the drawing . . . I’ll let you know who won in the next post, then I’ll send an email to the winners, who can write back with their mailing address, and voila, your cups will be on the way, either for you to keep, or perhaps to give away as a Christmas gift! And more . . .

Shipping from the printer is still on schedule for August 26th, which means we will probably have to wait until the day after Labor Day, September 8 to get HOME FOR CHRISTMAS delivered to the Studio! So, 3 more winners in this next drawing ~ and for each, a signed copy of my new book, hot off the press! If you’ve already ordered it, then Boom! You’ll have another one to giveaway! A little bit of “pay it forward.”💞
Leave a comment as suggested above … and now we will have six winners! Makes my day!
Okay dear ones, that’s all she wrote for today! I hope you’re giving yourself those hugs I talked about at the Zoom Party. They do help, and you do deserve them.❤️ Petty-pet hugs are good too! XOXOXO

    Dear Susan,
I got my bluebird mug and have so enjoyed using it. I missed it the first time around and was so pleased to have a second opportunity. I have been in quarantine since March as I take an immunosuppressant to manage my RA, and your blog posts are such a highlight. And I’ve reread your books and am very excited for the new Christmas one. Thanks again for making life a lot sweeter.

Thank you for another beautiful blog post. My mom recently passed away-she introduced you to me and whenever I see anything you create it brings back fond memories!

  35. Heidi says:

How you have subtly shifted my viewpoint over the past several years.! Stuck at home with several chronic illnesses I am somewhat prepared for the intense level of isolation my doctor encourages me to follow. However, following your lead I learned that changing up my mantle vignette which I look at for hours everyday makes life here at home feel a little different and fresher…and whimsy makes all the difference.

    • sbranch says:

Brilliant, you are so lucky you have the charming gift of whimsy! Not everyone does! Please remember to give yourself a hug, Heidi.😘 💞

  36. Irene Blackburn says:

Wow! Love your enthusiasm. It is catching. Also love the new cups. Wishing I had one….maybe I’ll win one.

  37. Dee Duncan says:

❤❤❤LOVE Your books and art!! I can’t reread A Fine Romance enough!! ❤❤❤

  38. Heather Byrne says:

Thank you good person. You first entered my life through your artwork (many years ago). I was newly single and in the process of finding my way. I have always enjoyed cooking & your artwork said happy and joyous to me, drawing me into your world. Thank you also for your books and blogs; now I know your words, too. Possibly you are an old soul? (Me, most definitely). You seem so grateful and respectful for the good that has come before you and is yet to come. Hooray for a book of quotes with your heart leading the way through the wisdom of the ages. Helping people connect across time.
Just a little early, but need to mention a couple of my Halloween movie faves: Arsenic & Old Lace with Cary Grant and sorta scary, Walt Disney’s Headless Horseman cartoon.

    • sbranch says:

Both great suggestions. I don’t know if I’m an old soul. I’m too interested in everything going on in the real world. My mother was an old soul. Completely nonjudgmental; ALL she cared about was her family and her friends. Period. Her house was a museum of her love for us.💖

  39. Carol says:

thank you for the lovely thoughts and photos and everything! Beauty is so unappreciated in our modern world. Good to see that there are many others who think like I do.

  40. Nancy in Vancouver, WA says:

Hey, Susan! I so enjoyed the Zoom talk on your lovely trip to the English countryside. It was simply heaven. Thank You!!
I was wondering, since you know the high points of visiting the English countryside, would you and Joe ever consider leading a travel group? Because I’m in. I don’t feel I would experience a fraction of what you have on my own. I think that many others would be interested. I know, it’s a daunting idea. I just had to ask. Thanks! Loved reading your plans for the outside, socially distanced, delightful dinner party.

    • sbranch says:

I’ve thought of it, would be fun, and if I was single, I would do it. But the guy? He kind of likes our alone-time when we go traveling. And since I work so much, I kind of think I owe it to him! Would be fun though!

  41. Jackie Grabinski says:

I am really ready for this Summer to be over. I live in New Jersey and the heat was unbearable and we didn’t feel comfortable enough to go to the beach and stay for a few days with the Virus. Looking forward to reading your new book and the cool weather. HAPPY WALKING! I love it, also.

  42. Karen Hellier says:

    Hi Susan!

I love your blog and always get excited when I see it in my inbox. During this pandemic, I discovered your blog, AND your 3 books, “Fairy Tale Girl,” “Martha’s Vineyard Isle of Dreams,” and “A Fine Romance: Falling in Love with the English Countryside.” I loved them all and didn’t want them to end. But finding them during the Coronavirus mess cheered me up and gave me many hours of happy reading so I am sending you a great big thank you!

Please keep doing all that you do. you bring joy to many!

  43. Gert Stevens says:

Oh Susan…what a lovely post! You are so inspiring! I was sitting here thinking of these 3 major projects I need to get done…then I read your list and I was exhausted..just thinking of them. LOL Your book or books of quotes will be on the top of my want lists next year. I’ve always been intrigued on how you always are able to find just the right quote for your writings. Yay for Joe, he looks so busy making just the right size..sized tables for you dinners! Thanks for reminding me about the flowers in your little vases….I need to pick some of my marigolds and fill mine as well.. I had picked a few and dried them, though. Loved our Zoom gathering with you. I’m looking forward to your next one.. I loved the virtual ((Hug)). It made me cry…thank you!

  47. Pam Sinsabaugh says:

Dear Susan – I look so forward to your blog posts & you never disappoint! Thank you for sharing your amazing talents. Thank you,Susan. I so needed this.
Can’t wait for Enchanted to be in my hands. Also looking forward to your book of quotes. It’s nice to have something to look forward to.
Would you please consider doing a mug with shamrocks on it? I have a shamrock from one of your calendars years ago,cut out, and use for a bookmark. I love it,just sweet and simple. Have always been hoping to see it everytime a new set of mugs come out. Hasn’t happened so thought I would ask.
    Here’s to fall .

  49. Kathy M says:

    Hello Susan,
Greetings from Silicon Valley California. Sheltering with my three college age sons and husband. Started school again this week on Zoom with my 5th graders. While dealing with the smoke from the Santa Cruz fires, dampanic, election noise and losing my mom this summer (mom went to Van Nuys HS 1960!), I love reading your post of romantic flowers, oceanside walks and adorable Jack. Thank you for reminding me that Autumn will soon come and we will make it to the other side of all of this.

    • sbranch says:

Do your kids talk about how they are coping? I know everything seems “normal” to 5th graders, but does this, too?

  50. Delightful blog, my favorite is always seeing Jack, what a lucky kitty! Glad you are well & staying safe, we are doing well here in Canada, so looking forward to your new calendars, praying 2021 will be a better year! Sending love to all, Sara

  51. Andrea says:

Loved this Blog. Couldn’t sleep and now I am excited thinking about Fall as well. Sometimes I feel like I’m living in a bad dream with COVID and the sadness surrounding us. Yet, I find being grateful always helps. So much to be thankful for. After 4 little granddaughters, we are having a grandson, Tucker James in October. Today I attended my daughter in law’s Online “Sprinkle”, where they showed us the baby’s nursery, showed gifts they received, and told everyone how much they appreciate people reaching out to them during this tough time to be pregnant. After that, a virtual Wedding Ceremony, the poor couple had to cancel their big wedding and change venue and limit guests twice. It was so perfect and touching. Now I have your Zoom tea party to forward to. Bless you Dear Susan from bottom of my ❤️

  52. I look forward to the day I see Susan Branch in my email inbox. Then I read everything at least 2 or 3 times to be sure I haven’t missed a word. You inspire me so much. I just smile the entire time I am reading your blog. I love fall as you do. I always look forward to getting my seasonal items unpacked. I have 14 tubs of autumn, Halloween and Thanksgiving items to decorate and display in my home…plus 3 patterns of different autumn seasonal China. At 75, it takes me a while to get it all arranged. Then, I can just relax and enjoy it. Happy fall to you and yours.

  53. Patricia Randall says:

A quote book!!!!!!! I can’t wait!! Quotes have always been my very favorite things!

I especially love those from people who lived so long ago. They truly amaze me and fill me with wonder!!

And isn’t it thrilling that September is day after tomorrow? It is still so hot here and probably will be for some time, but I do have a smile on my face more often now!!!

  73. Audrey Waite says:

I’m an October baby so Halloween has always been a big celebration for me. The house is decorated from stem to stern. Sedona, AZ doesn’t have street lights so merchants in “uptown” give out treats to the big and little kids. I always dress as a witch and my friend goes as Dorothy with a toy dog in a basket! We have a great time “begging” for candy and when we get tired, we sit and pass out the candy we don’t like and save a few chocolate treats for ourselves! Only one merchant said “this is for the kids” to which I replied I’m a big kid. How dare she deny me a 2 cent piece of candy!

    • sbranch says:

My grandmother and her friends would take cocktail glasses and go door to door. Not quite the same thing! But I always thought it sounded funny. Not sure they really did it, but cute.❤️

      • dezi says:

Dear Audrey, My ex-husband, I, and our three boys and one daughter, moved to Sedona, AZ, in 1986, when Scottsdale, AZ decided to put in canals right down Fifth Ave. and our shop was in the path of that new construction. We took up the $$$ the city offered immediately having fallen in love with Sedona, and moved shop, house, lock, stock, and barrel and opened a glass and t shop in the heart of uptown Sedona. That October our kids go tricks and treating, but it was so dark they couldn’t see, even with torch in hand, too dark!, SO no TRICKS or Treats that year. We, the merchants got together, and the next Halloween (1988) was the very 1st Uptown Sedona Halloween block party for kids to tricks and treats. It was my idea, and 60% of the uptown merchants were all a go. Now it’s huge, a party for kids and adults, and it’s all because of the stars! So many Star gazers lived there, (still do, I think), so it was illegal to instal any upwards pointing lights of any kind. But I will never forget my first night in Sedona, looking up and seeing the whole universe, planets, stars, the Milky Way, amazing. I was utterly blown away, but it was so dark, like you say NO street lights. Having lived in cities all my life, it was a new, wonderful experience. I live in Cottonwood now, long story, and haven’t been to Halloween block party in ages. Maybe this year, after all we will have masks on,,LOL!!! 🤪

Hello there from a born and bred California girl :-). I loved your blog today because Fall is MY favorite season too! Just hearing the word is hope in this intrepid heat and, ugh, smoke. But I know that cool temps are coming and leaves will be changing and true inspiration awaits. I have given your Autumn book to several friends, their first introduction to you and your creative ways, and now THEY have fallen in love with the Susan Branch style and inspiration as well. Thank you for continuing to remind us throughout the years that beauty is all around us if we only stop and look. Happy Fall!

p.s. Looking forward to your new book on quotes! Often, the most favorite part of your books for me!

Hi Susan, I love this blog entry, just what I needed to cheer me up! I love all your pictures, especially from your daily walk by the ocean. Wish I had that in Ohio! You are always a reminder of what is true and good and put everything in perspective during this crazy time. Glad you are staying well and still enjoying this summer as it is drawing to a close to make way for my favorite time of year—Autumn! I do love everything about the fall, and we were feeling a little early fall like temperatures this morning! Our leaves are just showing changes here and there. We had volunteer pumpkins come up in our vegetable garden and I have them on my front porch. Our tomatoes are pretty much done, but I plan one more batch of your Gazpacho before they are all gone. So good! Looking forward to your web broadcast in September, I have my ticket. Also looking forward to your next books to come out. I don’t have favorite quotes book so would love to get one. Already ordered the Christmas book. Take care and stay well. Hugs, Barb

Thanks once again, for sending out another shot of positivity, it beats yesterday’s flu shot by a wide margin. I can smell the ocean, I’m gently running my hand over the hydrangeas, I smell the sawdust from the new picnic table, I can taste candy corn looking at the VOTE pumpkin, I hear the clock tick-ticking. Mindfulness in luscious doses :))))

    Hello Susan,

I attended your first zoom program. It gave me something different to look forward to, and I was so excited. The day finally came, and I obsessively checked my clock every 5 minutes to be sure I had eastern and mountain time synched up. I didn’t want to me a second of it. It was SO wonderful – like you came to my house for a personal visit. I soaked up every moment. You enrich my life in many ways, and I can’t thank you enough. Now, I’m excited to buy your quote book because I’ve been a quote gatherer my whole adult life. It’s one of the things that I have in common with you, as I’m sure, are many of the girlfriends out there.

Love you to pieces, Susan! xoxo

    Susan,
What a breath of fresh air this post is. I am also a lover of two seasons, autumn and waiting for autumn! A wonderful quote. Today was beautiful here in Vermont, cool and breezy. I took the pup for a very long walk, he is snoring away now, quite exhausted. Tomorrow I will finish my summer gatherings and start the fall celebration. One of the first treasures I put out is my collection of autumn books, the most precious being yours. I’m so glad you opened your copy
today. The best months are arriving. Enjoy, Dale

  94. Patricia Edde says:

    Wow Susan,
I miss a few days and you already have 2169 responses – well aren’t we just the popular one (picture this with Lily Tomlin as Geraldine the phone operator with her nose in the air – ya got it?).
Fall can’t come soon enough for me either. It’s my favorite time of year, followed closely by Spring, but alas they are becoming less visible here in the Midwest. I subscribe to “Our Iowa”, a magazine that shows wowzer pictures of Fall in Iowa, but anymore I think they have to go back several years in their files to get the pictures they are showing. So sad. I think climate change has a lot to do with this but we still have a little bit of time left to turn things around – VOTE! Thanks so much for mentioning the derecho in Iowa. It didn’t get much play on the TV news but it sure impacted a whole lot of people, just like the wild fires in California and the hurricane that did the most damage in Texas. Derechos are straight line winds that can reach up to 100 mph and include thunderstorms. Cedar Rapids got hit the worst and some people were without power for more than a week during days where the temperatures registered over 100 with the heat index tossed in. Between the fires, hurricanes, derecho and the unceasing virus, we have an awful lot of people to include in our prayers.
I must tell you that Livvie and Silas (my 2 cats) are now best girlfriends. Livvie decided to join the sisterhood and now they chase each other all over the house and I never know where my rugs will end up next or when Silas will slide by me on her way to 3rd. Bix (the dog) is feeling a bit left out and I think he’s trying to become a cat because he is starting to eat the cat food. I hold myself above the fray by calmly sitting in my comfortable chair while reading a good book with a cooling libation within arms reach. Speaking of books, I am trying to wait patiently for 2 more days until I get the new Louise Penny in my hot little hands – I am doing a pretty good job of it as I am only missing a few fingernails. I will probably have it read in a day and then will have to wait a whole year until the next one comes out. I wonder if this is what the gentleman felt like while trying to roll the boulder uphill in Dante’s Inferno. I was trying to spell his name but none of the renditions I came up with could pass dictionary muster but its something like Sissafus – close but no banana.
But enough of this banal blathering (I feel during these days of limited contact I am losing my words so am trying to use as many as possible in case you hadn’t noticed), it is probably best that I bid you a fond farewell before I outstay my welcome.
Much love to you, Joe and Jack from

  99. Connie Haltermann says:

    Dear Susan,
Knowing that Autumn is your favorite time of year, I thought you’d enjoy this little thought that is making its way through social media. It’s a Halloween twist: If Halloween is cancelled, kids should dress up and sit in the yard while adults drive by and throw candy. (Can’t you just picture it?)

A fan of your work for over twenty years, I will definitely be ordering your new Christmas book. I can’t wait to see what’s inside!

  100. Sharon Watson says:

    Happy Day Susan

I’m counting down until Wednesday September 2nd the Harvest Moon. Each night I look into our sky it gets larger and larger brighter and brighter. What a beauty. What would I do without your calendars to remind me to look up and enjoy the nights moon glow show. I hope everyone enjoys each months Moon Shows as I do. Look up and SMILE!
