Gotta say Rabbit-Rabbit first, because that’s a whole October of good luck for all of us which we will need if we ever hope to get through 2020 in one piece! Then must pass out the luv-lee MUSICA because it is in charge of lifting hearts ~ but, really my very first words to you this morning are
Yes, I do, so very much And you probably know why if you read the comments in my last blog post. “I hope the angels know what they have . . .” wrote our Girlfriend Annie in Sydney, Australia about my mom.😢 Dear, kind, loving words AND thoughts (because you knew I knew) from ALL of you, meant the world to me. Teary-eyed, I read every wonderful word. Then I went to my art table and painted that ⬆️ because I was thinking it the whole time I was reading. Big, tall, skinny, and watercolory, it had to fit on the page. This connection between us was what I felt even when writing my first book, and look at this, it happened!👏👏👏 So, a little gift for you, a small token of my great affection, I give you, The Sky . .
Just like I label some of my photos by color, I have a huge number labeled “The Sky.” You can see why . . .
It’s one thing that follows us wherever we go and gifts us with works of art like no other. The orange on the water! Dark at the top, dark at the bottom, both moving toward the center and the light. And all free, a gift from God.
In this photo we’re driving across England. We pulled over and got out of the car for a deep breath of this soul-expanding open space that smelled of grass and freedom.
Delicate, soft, flittery, blue and lavender and peach … a calm sky that says Forever, adding Hope, Truth, and Beauty.
And this! Where the clouds are chasing the sun into the sea… a reminder that at some amazing moments in our lives, there is no better place ON EARTH for us to be . . .
Stormy skies at sea . . . a parting of the clouds, where the sea and the sky are like a bowl . . . and we were the toy boat floating in it… I love looking at these pictures and thinking about being here again! Lots of foreverness out in the Atlantic . . . you feel small and so so so so lucky.
This is moonrise over our harbor . . . rocking boats . . . lapping water . . . cry of gulls . . . smell of saltwater . . .
Streaks of white contrails made by water vapor from airplanes, turn to ice that slashes through this Scottish sky. (There’s a little checked-upon Morning Science for you!)
Green and pleasant land . . .
On our way to Boston, Storm and sunset made beautiful music together . . .
Sun peeks through the clouds . . . the last warm rays touching the water . . .
The Shenandoah is a wonderful addition to our harbor . . . see how the light touches on everything white and makes it glow? That’s what happens here sometimes as the sun goes down, especially wonderful against that dark sky.
Doris Day’s voice soars in my mind, 🎵 You sigh, a song begins, you speak and I hear violins, it’s magic . . .🎶
Pink halo over Stonehenge under the same sky since it was built 2500 years before the birth of Christ. And yes, we are a part of this.
This sky was right outside our kitchen door … Yes, Toto, in our very own back yard.
We pulled up to this rock wall for me to take a photo of this rainbow over Galway Bay in Ireland . . .
and snow flowers
The discussion here, driving from Colorado to Utah, was, “Look at that sky! Yikes! Is this the right way? Should we turn around?”
And just down at our own beach where we walk every day, water and sky, all pinky blue, if you were painting this scene you would also use blue when you painted the sand . . .
We get lots of gorgeous skies from our room with a view when we’re crossing the country by train . . . here at a Kansas crossroads . . . look at all those choices!
Rich colors of purple and orange, mixed with the wind and sound of the waves are beautiful together in this Menemsha sky.
Lambs tails . . . look at them all running away!
Sometimes the sunset in our rear view mirror grabs my attention . . . I never want to miss anything!
I almost missed this picture of the sun, it almost slipped away! We were just getting on the ferry to home . . . I had to take it right through the rigging, but I GOT it!👏 And now, toOh yes, and last night was the Harvest Moon, our sky, filled with moon which woke me up this morning when I caught it trying to break into our bedroom through the cracks in the curtains!
We can feel the summer going, but we are stretching it out as long as we can. The flaming candles in the “bug buckets” make it cozy. But time is passing, September is gone, we’re already wrapping ourselves in blankets when we sit out late … so we just did the MOST wonderful thing. I’m so excited!!! We finally broke down and ordered one of these:
Yes, we did. A fire pit! Look at it! Isn’t it cute? I can’t wait! It’s supposed to be delivered October 6th. More stars! More sky! Now that we finally did it, I don’t know what took us so long. We celebrated 31 years in our house last month ~ It deserves a little something new and hygge for good behavior.💞
It comes with a screen and a poker … all for around $200, I think it will be TOTALLY worth it. Fire pits come in all sizes, shapes, and styles; HERE’S the one we chose. See the ring around the top? I hope that’s for our feet! I think I might light a fire on December 31🎉, bundle up, and take my 2020 calendar outside. I see myself scanning the sky for stars on the last night of the year, staring into the flames of a cozy wood fire, burrowing under my blanket, saying prayers to go up in the crackling sparks and smoke, as I toss the pages of 2020 into the fire and BURN IT UP, while praying for a peaceful, healthy, boring 2021 filled with hugs.💞 So MUCH to look forward to, holidays and decorating and cold weather and blue skies for all our West Coast Girlfriends . . . I just turned in the art for the cover of 2022! This is the year we think we’ll get to go back to England! But of course that doesn’t stop us from finding magic in the here and now . . . it’s in us, and around us, no waiting required!
Our woods are turning gold, leaves dance like fairies in the trees, magic abounds this time of year! We dawdle here every day.
Cool wind and the smell of leaf mulch, Joe and I walk to the sea, do our Morning Science, and solve all the world’s problem . . .
So exciting out there watching everything change, so much FREE stuff!🍂
Better than any florist ~ we bring it all home . . .For the ultimate in a homemade happy life, don’t forget your health darling Girlfriends . . . make sure you are MOVING. Too many things can go wrong when we don’t! And our energy levels get so much better if we DO. This dampanic is making me fat ~ we got a little too good at lockdown around here (I mean what’s a donut in times of trouble, or two, or a bag of potato chips to soothe the spinning head? Tater-Tots and ice cream and peanut butter on toast to tranquilize the bewildered soul) ~ when the pants got uncomfortable, I decided to do something about it … will tell you in the next post!
I’m so glad you’re all getting your books! I’m receiving lots of cute photos like this one from our Girlfriend Cynthia. Looks like Santa’s traveling around the world early this year! For our UK Girlfriends, Amazon UK has the book now, and I’m hearing many nice things from our Girlfriends on Goodreads and Facebook. Thank you all so much … I love writing books for you!💞
And look at this photo I borrowed from Facebook posted by Karen K. . . she took a picture of our Titcombs virtual Tea Party! She’s in my kitchen and I’m in hers! Love Karen’s red!♥️🌹💄❗️📕🍎
Look at my homemade set up! Proving, no, I do not know what I am doing. But it all worked out, it was so much fun! I know not everyone was able to make it, so I’m going to do two more mask-free Sunday Teas this month! The first one will be via Zoom on Sunday, October 18, at 4 pm EST for Bookends Bookstore in Ridgewood, NJ … you can sign up HERE. Yes, there will be signed books and door prizes (Puzzles!)! The very next Sunday, October 25th, we’ll be hosted by the wonderful King’s English Bookshop in Salt Lake City, Utah, for a Crowdcast event …. you can register HERE. It’s a great way to get out and about without leaving home! And where else can Girlfriends from Hawaii, England, Texas, and Australia all meet at the same time?
I know you’re probably not coming to every one of these events, but I do want to thank you for helping me support these lovely Independent Bookstores who need us all the time, but especially during these days of the Panic! These bookstores are a tradition, they’ve been serving communities 30 and 40 years! I’ve visited and fallen in love with them in real life … I can’t wait to go back someday in PERSON! Do you know that for every $100 you spend at an independently owned business, $68 will stay in the community? Keeping our small-business economy alive is part of what we need to do. I do love seeing the patriotism of dampanic as we get through this thing together, sea to shining sea.❤️
See what I have? A cricket singing in the kitchen.🎵 Yesterday, on the same day as full moon and rabbit-rabbit, making October a red-letter month already!
Is this quilt cute or is this quilt cute? Do you love it? Well, so do I! But I think I will love it even more if it somehow ends up getting a new home! Maybe yours! What do you think of that? A new giveaway as a special thank you and extra connection for all we are to each other ~ all aired-out and ready to go! I found it in an antique store many years ago. I don’t know the name of the pattern, and it’s not signed, but it was obviously made by someone with a joyful heart!💖 You know what to do, leave a little comment so you’ll be entered in the drawing.💝Yes, we do . . . so maybe even something more? Make my life a little happier? 🎄 Why NOT?
So if you were at the Titcombs Tea Party event, or have had a chance to read Home for Christmas, you know my book was partly inspired by this little book called Once on Christmas, published in 1938, which I found a long time ago in a used bookstore and mostly used each year at Christmas. It looked adorable on the coffee table in front of the fire. But it gained new meaning the afternoon I read it out loud to my two young nieces.
It’s a sweet little memory of Christmas at the turn of the century…❤️
… illustrated with charming line drawings by Lois Lenski.
A book made extra special because it’s out of print, and the vintage ones have become very hard to find.
But, and you know what I’m going to say! We did it! We found one. And now, drum roll, this little book will be going off to one of you!💖 At the bottom of this post you’ll see a whole bunch of tiny words in grey letters, and at the end, the word “comment.” That’s what you click on to leave one. I love reading them, and I often comment on your comments! But something tells me this might be a busy giveaway, please forgive me if I don’t get to comment . . . I’ll be reading though!❤️
We just found out they don’t want the kids to Trick-or-Treat here on the island this year. I was hoping, masks seemed so perfect for this time of year. But no. But that doesn’t mean we can’t decorate and be festive and lift the hearts of others with some pumpkins on the porch!
Or in the garden . . .
They make so many cute ones these days!🤣
They look good on the fridge . . .
And over the front door . . .
Or on the kitchen table . . .
Because it’s that time of year, and no dampanic can tell us what to do with our pumpkins!
I’ll tell you about the new fire pit in the next post, with pictures! I have a new recipe for you too, all kinds of good things, but I’ve gone on long enough. Remember to leave a comment if you want to be entered in the drawing. No matter HOW many comments we get, you’ll still have a better chance of winning than by playing the Lottery! Plus, no numbers, and no money!💝 Love forever, your pal for life . . . 💖
I’ll leave you with THIS . . . 💝
I am saving the Christmas book until the house is decorated for the holiday. I will sit down with your Christmas mug filled with tea and read it by the tree. Thank you Susan for bringing joy to all of us at this time. Hugs, Mindy
Happy October! Your blog came just in time! I’m needing a peaceful retreat from the chaos in the world around me. The peaceful skies, the beautiful quilt, and the wonderful quotes all took me away to a place of peace and stillness. Thank you!
I have created a cozy room upstairs to nest in this fall and winter. Cozy in Connecticut – Covid perk
I love the fabrics used in the quilt and the book looks to be an interesting read. Love all your sunset pictures.
My children are into the minimalist decorating rage. They would love for me to clear out all my books, old glass, sea shells and thrift shop linens to have “their” look. We go through this almost every time they visit. Sometimes I would get upset, but now I just smile and think to myself, “What would Susan Branch do?”:)
Hmm, made me smile. My daughter and I just had this conversation, only she and I are in agreement: why do other people think they know what’s best for us or what we like better than we do? We’ve lived THIS long, I guess WE know what we need to surround ourselves with to feel like ‘ourselves’. And like I just told an artist friend who completed a minimalist journal page (not her genre), “Minimalism is in the eye of the beholder”! Display On, dear heart!
Hello There Dear Susan,
LOVELY SKIES!! It’s starting to feel like Autumn here too, lots of dull grey days, but perfect for apple crisp, yumm!!
Thank you for the chance to win something so lovely…..
Lots of hugs and kisses from across the pond, grom
Nicoline and Gabri
A glorious start to the day to read your post! Thank you…… I just received my 2021 calendar and your Christmas book. All set for better days ahead! I love your photos and especially this season! It is the little things of taking a walk in all these lovely leaves.
Oh, happy Saturday morning, Susan! I’m having my first cuppa and reading your missive. Two things: I LOVE LOVE your book, with the sweet bookmark and your signature. I read just a bit each night before I fell asleep, savoring each word and picture. You are a treasure and a gem, so willing always to share your thoughts and your good wishes and inspiration. Oh, how I wish you’d enter me into the quilt contest!!!!! I would love to own that beautiful art. I cannot WAIT to hear your latest on your thoughts about losing some of this Covid weight. Hurry, hurry, as we are coming up on the gaining season once again and I’m right there with you — I’ve gained an extra some which my 70 year old body cannot afford to do. You also inspire me!
You constantly remind me to stop and appreciate- beauty and love. Thank you.
Was also in Galway Bay at the same spot in 2012 and we had a rainbow too!! It’s a beautiful space to be and Ireland has a special feeling if there will be a little fairy peeking behind a tree or stone.
Beautiful pictures of the sky–I have also loads of sky pictures!
Have a great weekend and stay save and healthy!!
Greetings,
TRUUS from the Netherlands
I read your blog knowing that for just a few minutes, there is no pandemic or world problems! Thanks for always being so positive.
Even with all the hardships right now there is still so much to be grateful for in this world. I love what you said about nature has so much to offer for free you just need to look for it. From beautiful sunsets, leaves changing colors, to pumpkins of every shape and color.
Sue, beautiful blog post as always. The world is full of negativity and anger these days. I’ve made it a point to NOT post anything political or negative on my Facebook page – only photos of flowers, fall leaves, food, teacups, butterflies, things that make me happy and peaceful. AND I have a new penpal from Friends of Susan Branch FB pg. who I’m writing to today 🙂 but I also wanted to share (because who else would understand but your Branchies?) one of my dear friends has passed away from cancer – a full year of treatments, surgeries and such. She was my SB BFF, my kindred-spirit in all things SB. we worked together for 15 yrs, became friends and shared recipes/photos/went to the farmers market together/out for breakfast on Saturdays, loved to decorate as if you were there! We celebrated your birthday (along with Martha Stewart, the Queen, and Julia Child) Anyway she always had a SB blotter on her desk and SAVED each one. I never had one, just the small calendar, the wall calendar, the purse calendar (isn’t that enough? LOL) So today because I want to think of her every day at work, I will order my first desk blotter to be used next year (because she would have ordered hers already!) And because her favorite flowers were hydrangeas I am planting some in the yard – mind you I am not a gardener. I hang pots of geraniums, impatiens, ferns and only have to water, never weed, then get new ones each summer. So actually digging in the dirt is not something I ever do, but I’m doing it! The little things. I’ve read that when you meet someone, even if you are in contact briefly, you are forever changed by them. so, here I am changed, ordering a blotter and planting perennial flowers because Dee-Dee would do that, so now I must. Anyway, I would so adore the quilt. and as always with your giveaways I say: Pick me! Pick me! xoxoxo
Terrible loss Barbara, I’m sooooo sorry … sending prayers for you and for Dee-Dee too.🙏 xoxo
You are just what I needed this morning. Woke at 2am and feeling a little off kilter. My schnauzer Murphy is asleep at my feet and I am down to the last sips of my coffee. When read your posts it takes me back to Rhode Island…back to memories of trips to the Vineyard…now 16 years here in Arizona . Your are most generous to offer a chance for this beautiful quilt.
I’ve always felt that the key to success in life was to touch the life of another in a positive way. Your friend DeeDee touched you and you will be changed forever because of the friendship you shared. Isn’t that beautiful? She will be with you every day in your thoughts and as you look at the blotter on your desk. And when your hydrangeas bloom I’m sure that you will smile as you remember your beautiful friend.
Susan – your posts are like watching a Nancy Meyers movie… a feast for the eyes. And your words… a feast for the soul. It came just as I needed it. I thought the quilt was so lovely and then the book came! I love old books! My fingers are crossed for either but I’m also happy for whoever gets these treasures. <3
You have been in my thoughts and prayers as you grieve the loss f your precious mom. Love you, Sister!
You take some great photos! Love the sky ones, but the big old orange moon was my favorite. Thanks for once again taking us away from the pandemic, at least for a little while. Stay safe!
I love your blog, especially today. It cheered me up and brought a smile! Your recipe for clam linguine last month was SO GOOD! ❤️
Susan, wonderful post as always….
Such a great cheer up with all that’s going on these days. Must say, always love seeing what Jack is up too. Just love that Kitty….May you and Joe Keep safe and healthy. Susan K.
Beautiful flower quilt…..makes me want to get my fat quarters out….LOL
I look forward to attending one of your Sunday Zooms…..what FUN!
Thanks for keeping everyone encouraged….Love Faron Indiana❤️
Love the picture of the kitty looking out of the window at the pumpkins! Reminds me of my kitty, Eddie, who I miss so very much.
Happy October Susan! I love your sky pictures. To me it just shows the artistry of God, I’m convinced that He is the master painter from all the beautiful colors we find in His world. ❤️🎨
Your beautiful pictures reminded me to get my camera out and start looking up ❤️
So thankful for the beauty you share and the way it inspires me. You have changed the direction of my mood this morning and the ripples, of course will touch everyone I connect with today, so, THANK YOU, from the bottom of my heart.

We have fire pit and you will love it! They are very cozy and calming. Your night sky picture was my favorite all those stars all those wishes…happy weekend! ❤️ Love, hugs, and prayers…Tricia B.
I love you too Susan! Thank you for your wonderful wake up call this morning to look for the beautiful. It’s still there. I absolutely love your Christmas book cover and am dying to see inside! I want to order one for me and one for my Mom❤️ Also, I love Lois Lenski’s art. I have a few old, hardcover Betsy Tracy books that are illustrated by her and I treasure them! Also, that quilt!!! I would just love to snuggle up underneath those cheerful flowers and read your books😍😍❤️❤️ Thank you for always thinking of us. We’re thinking of you, Joe, Jack and your whole family as well. We will get through this and move forward to better times. I know it. Sending love xoxoxoxoLaura
I missed Septembers letter from you. My husband had passed away a year before. I’m thankful I didn’t miss October. As with your Mother my husband Don, passed at just the right time for him. You have my sympathy and love. I’ve read you for many years and know your my friend. As you go into October may the good days out number the bad. My birthday is October 6 th so I hope you have particularly good day. Love from Texas, Susan
My goodness, I LOVE these posts! I’m really feeling the transition to Autumn here in Virginia.. I’ve got my pumpkins out and love the idea of the little ones above the door – I’m inspired to try that one out! Thank you for our monthly dose of whimsy, nostalgia and beauty! Both the beautiful quilt and vintage Christmas book would be a blessing to anyone they are gifted to! Forever grateful for you, Susan!
I love the Christmas book. I just got mine and it’s so lovely.
Loved your sky photos in this months blog and I sooo enjoyed being part of the Zoom with u from the little Massachusetts book store a few weeks back! Now I absolutely know we r kindred spirits because I too have that little book ‘Once on Christmas’ that inspired you to write your new Christmas book! I collect little vintage books that strike my fancy and have been doing it for years! Thanks for being such a fun girlfriend and for continuing to inspire me in my painting and my writing! I live in Vineyard Haven too and would love to meet up for a cup of new friendship one day in a fine and lovely China tea cup! In the meantime, have a Happy Fall! 🎃
Look forward to your Halloween front door decor every year❤️❤️❤️🍁🍁🍁🎃🎃🎃
Susan you are such a bright spot in so many of our lives. You work so tirelessly in creating so many beautiful, memorable, meaningful calendars, books, mugs, quotes, etc., etc., for all of us to enjoy. What an angel you are on this earth! The quilt is so lovely and the book looks amazing. The sky pictures are incredible. Thank you for sharing them. Thank you for being YOU! Hugs and Love.
Hi Susan! Your sky photos are amazing. Thank you for sharing them. Enjoy your fire pit. We have one out back. My husband builds a fire on Friday nights. We sit, visit and enjoy the peace and quiet.
Hmmm. My comment of last evening doesn’t seem to have made its way to you, so I will try again.
Someone said, years ago, that when a loved one dies, it means that you have an angel that you know. I am so very sorry about your loss of your mom. Your relationship with her sounds truly special.
As a fellow painter, I love skies and really enjoyed the photos in your blog. When your blogs arrive, I always open them with great anticipation! Thank you! You are a gift to this world.
I hope that you and your family will stay well and happy!
Hi Susan…I love my new Christmas book! It so reminds me of my christmas’ growing up. My husband is a professional nature photographer and he always says, “it’s the clouds, it’s the clouds” that make the picture! So we are cloud lovers also😎. Love your pics!
Hi Susan, I have that same fire pit, and the moon and stars showing up when there’s a fire burning is awesome! A tip: put about 3-4 inches of sand in the bottom of the pit before burning anything. Ashes are caustic and will eat the metal of your pit. You can burn several fires in it before dumping the whole thing out and starting over with sand again it will last longer! I’ve got a s’mores basket and our favorite thing is to toast garlic naan bread to go with the bears we cook on long forks!!! Happy firepit! Thanks for the beauty you share with all of us.
Thank you! I know where I can get the sand! 🤣
What a beautiful post- especially with the gift of the sky at the beginning (I love the Eskimo saying). I love clouds- they add so much feeling to a photograph. And the photo of lamb’s tail!! Beautiful. I don’t think that I’ve ever seen them before. Now I have. We do have so much to be thankful for; it’s nice to have a little reminder, especially in these difficult times. I love the arrangement you made of things gathered on your walk. I’m not very artistic. My flowers always look as if they were just “plopped” in the vase! (I’d like to take a flower arranging course when they are available again).
My package arrived from Titcomb’s (I do love that bookshop. I was there for a signing you did in the Fall several years ago. Or I think it was Fall. It wasn’t outside like the one shown in your virtual tea). I hid the book and calendar away, so I have something to look forward to. I admit; I did sneak a peek! It is lovely, as are all your books. I have a few Christmas books that I put out each year- Christmas is A Time of Giving by Joan Walsh Anglund (as well as a little cookie book by her), Christmas is Together Time by Charles Schultz, and Let’s Keep Christmas by Peter Marshall. The one you have looks lovely; I absolutely love the simplicity of the drawings. Speaking of simplicity, are you familiar with The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, and The Horse? It is absolutely beautiful, and is written for persons eight to eighty. By the way, I was also able to get a Red Letter Day mug from Titcomb’s if any of the girlfriends are interested. It was sold out everywhere else I checked.
I am taking my daily walks and enjoying firsthand the healing power of nature. The leaves are beginning to turn here and there is a crispness in the air (in the early morning and evening). I haven’t smelled wood smoke yet, but I’m sure that I will before long.
Wishing you and Joe (and Jack) a wonderful Autumn. Stay safe and continue to spread your love and sunshine throughout the world. If we all move forward in a positive way, we can make a difference. I’m sure of it. I love the picture of Jack at the end of the post- a perfect ending (until we meet again)
I have found sand in the past at garden shops or home improvement stores. Also, if there’s a playground on the Vineyard with a sandbox, they might b e able to inform you of a source.
I hope it’s pears you’re roasting … and not “bears” … 😉😘
My heart is a flutter over that quilt. Precious and priceless-just think of someone making all those lovely little stitches and choosing just the right fabric. Be still my heart.
I feel like a winner always just reading your posts!
You always brighten my day and inspire me. Thanks for being so positive!
We have a home in Pennsylvania and a summer cottage on a lake in Maine. Our PA house is in a valley in the woods so we don’t see much sky. But in the summer, on the lake, the skies are endless and I take pictures constantly – especially the sunsets. I loved scrolling through your sky pictures. Thanks, as always, for sharing such beauty.
Dear Susan, Your lovely posts always come when I seem to need them most. Thank you, for all you do and all you are. Sending love back your way!
I look forward to your blog every month. It gives me a comforting feeling each time I read it. Thank you.
Your post brightens my day, just as I am hitting the “6 Month Wall of COVID.” (Just read about that yesterday, and yes, it’s a real “thing.” Which makes me feel less crazy and less blue!) The skies and pumpkins and watercolors and your love make the world a better place. Thank you! Sending prayers for the loss of your mother. I didn’t know her but I love her. She made YOU. xoxo
While I mourn the passing of summer, your fall photos bring such happiness. Perhaps it’s the vibrant colors in these dark days?
The air in Florida is changing as fall approaches! As a former New Englander I miss the leaves changing colors & the cider stands. Your October newsletter brings back memories & smells of this beautiful time of year. I love Lois Lenski! I have her book Prairie School. I also love Rumer Godden & collect her children’s books. Loved your Christmas book and am excited to begin the puzzle as soon ad it arrives! I may have to invite my book club. over!
Thank you for you sky pictures! The blues, pinks, lavenders, and yes the greys and blacks brightened my morning…
I just read that someone was saving your book to read at Christmastime!!! HOW did they do that!! I couldn’t open the package fast enough and read it fast enough… I wanted to re-live my childhood Christmas immediately even though some things were different, I grew up in rural Georgia, you in a town in California! But the experiences were similar!! I’ll savor the book at Christmastime but I had to read it immediately though! I bought a copy of, “Once on Christmas” a couple years ago from a great rare bookseller! It’s a fifth printing and is signed by the illustrator. I treasure it as well as your Christmas book. I have already mailed one to my dear friend in England… I wanted her to experience my childhood Christmas!!
Dear Sweet Susan,
I got your Christmas time machine last week. I loved every minute of experiencing your family Christmas. The anticipation, preparations, and joy you gave one another. While I’ve adored your for decades, I need SB comfort and kindness and cheerfulness in giant doses these days. Continued blessings to you and all you love.

Tawni Urrutia in Lodi, Ca
My mom and I love reading your blog, and especially appreciate it now. Thanks so much for reminding us of all the beauty and good that exists in the world. So sorry about your mom – felt like we all knew her due to your wonderful stories. It seems like you were a perfect match. ❤
I loved the Titcomb’s tea…..had a few girlfriends over and we had tea and goodies while we watched! So much fun…..and I love the book! Love the cute little size too!
Happy October! You will love your new fire “pit” . . . we bought one this summer as we were building a patio in the back yard, which we just finished, and we had the first fire out there last night. Our son, who did a lot of the hard work on the patio, and his room-mate joined us, and we had such a good time. It was cold until the fire blazed, but then, oh so wonderfully warm. As a bonus, the Harvest moon put on a show for us as it moved across the sky-couldn’t have been a more perfect October night. I wish you and Joe many such lovely nights. And thank you for sharing your talent with all of us.
I look forward to each post! You always post pictures and sentiments that lift my heart! Thank you for the beautiful skies and I can’t wait to see the posts of the fire pit. Autumn is my favorite season.
I just read that someone was waiting for Christmastime to read your book!!! HOW do they do that??? I couldn’t open the package fast enough or read it fast enough!! I wanted to re-live my childhood Christmas immediately! I’ve already mailed off one to my dear friend in England so she can know about my childhood Christmases here.
I bought the book, “Once on Christmas” a couple years ago from a great rare book seller. It is signed by the illustrator. I treasure it as I treasure your Christmas book!
Oooh, that Christmas book is adorable. I “decorate” with books and would love it. Thank you, Susan.
Your optimistic sky pictures remind me to stand tall and “LOOK UP!” in this creepiest of years. Thanks, dear one.
Thanks for the sky and ocean pictures! Lived on the Cape for 7 years in the 1990’s and still get homesick for the sound of lapping water and view of the moon on the water!
Oh my goodness, a quilt give away plus a book give away. You are so generous! I would love to win either one. Not sure what they are doing about trick or treat in our little town yet but we have our fall decorations out anyway. We have a fire pit and love it but so far have only used it once this season. It has been too windy. Happy Fall!
Thank you for sharing all the beautiful sky pictures especially the sunsets. Sunsets always remind me of my Mother. She enjoyed every sunset.
Happy Fall! Thank you for the blog post just when I needed some beauty in my life.
Mine comment will be short & sweet…..I adore YOU, yes I do…..Your books, calendars, mugs, blogs and now a new puzzle to look forward to !! Thank you for making MY world (with or without COVID) a happier & brighter place !! xoxo Joan
My heart fills with magical joy whenever I read your posts and books! Thank you thank you ❤️
An Especially Wonderful Blog!!! Thank you for sharing all these beautiful thoughts, quotes and photos so creatively!
As always, I love reading your posts! I love the quilt and the little book. I could find a place for either! I read Lois Lenski books as a child and so love her illustrations. I don’t know why I remember her name (I just turned 67!) but I do! It’s chilly here in Indiana – I just ordered that fire pit for my husband whose birthday is on the 17th. Ours is so rusty and falling apart! Thank you for the suggestion to put sand in the bottom. I did receive my sweet Christmas book with your precious autograph – and all my calendars. Thank you for warming my heart as we get ready for my husband’s retirement in November. I had planned a trip to Paris, Ireland and Rome but that is not to happen. So I have a long list of remodeling tasks for him to do that we never finished with raising 5 children. Have a wonderful weekend! I have been raising monarch caterpillars and have the last batch of 9 almost ready to send off to Mexico. You should try it – it is so much fun! We are getting low on milkweed so will have to go search for more this weekend.
You always inspire me! xo
Love the quilt and book. Please enter me in the drawing. And thanks for your wonderful blog. It always brightens my day.
Thank you for the wonderful long newsletter this month! We need relaxing thoughts and to be attuned to the seasons. The world of man’s making is very stressful.
What does Jack see in the garden? Our feline Ava watches swirling leaves, scampering chipmunks, squirrels, birds and the strutting and posturing wild turkeys. Our neighborhood has more turkeys than ever for some reason. We don’t cross their path. One tom often chases our mail van!
The quilt is lovely! I think of my Irish grandmother whenever I see a quilt of pretty colors. I was her drafted helper each spring when she hung the winter quilts over the clotheslines for the day to “air” before wrapping them with cedar blocks until next autumn. She also had lightweight summer quilts.
Your pumpkins, all pumpkins make me smile – round, oval, pink, white, bright orange, bumpy – I like them all. As the children in our town (we have 3 grandchildren ages 2 1/2, 4 and 5 1/2) cannot trick-or-treat this year I am decorating our front porch and windows with pumpkins of many varieties for their entertainment during the day as they go by.
I hope you and Joe (and Jack) enjoy autumn! Take care!
Beautiful quilt and great book.
My sister, bless her heart, sent me your newsletter! I’m so happy to reconnect! I have a lot of your older holiday books, and appreciate the Joy with which you view each day, and each little gift from nature! Such a great reminder in this crazy time to take joy in all the little things (which really aren’t little, are they?)! I am so very sorry to hear of your mothers passing. We just lost my mother-in-law last Saturday. She, like you, was remarkable at finding treasures in nature, had an amazing, ornery spirit, and will be greatly missed. She is fondly remembered by her two granddaughters for wearing long denim skirts wit a baby bunny tucked in the pocket (found in the yard when her husband was mowing, and calling grilled cheese “mouse sandwiches”. Thank you!
Susan, over 1000 responses so far…how wonderful is that? You have so enhanced my October and started my fortification for the upcoming winter, in the continuing pandemic. Loved the blend of skies from Martha’s Vineyard to England to the American West, the reminder of train rides and ferry rides to come, the beauty of October colors. All of the quotes. And the warmth of a fire pit!!! THANK YOU and truly love you back.💕🏡🌻🍁🧡🎃👻
Every fall I put out my Lois Lenski book “Now It’s Fall” that my mother gave me years ago.
I cherish it and would also cherish your newly found Christmas book.
“Summer’s over, now it’s fall.
Just the nicest time of all.”
I think I can recite the whole book from heart! 🍁
Since your last post, I have been on line. Ordered my calendars for self and my mother and ordered your new book. While on your site, revisited Beatrix Potter items. Through Amazon and Barnes and Noble found and ordered several books. In other words I have had a wonderful time. It has turned cooler her in NC so my new books will keep me warm.
Good morning, Susan!
I was introduced to your work years back when my mom gifted me with your Christmas from the Heart of the Home book to add to my Christmas book collection. It is still a favorite that I re-read every year in December. I’m so looking forward to adding your new book to my collection.
Take care, be well, & carry on,
Kelly in PA
It’s Saturday morning at 9:00am and I just stepped outside to do some yardwork and it is quite chilly here in PA!! I stepped right back inside and sat down at my laptop with my Pumpkin Spice Latte to catch up on my emails since I spent yesterday mowing the lawns! What a great way to warm up reading your posting and I’m dreading the thought of going outside again but I know I have to get the yards ready for winter………..I received my “Home for Christmas” books, was a little concerned when I saw the large dent in one of the corners but it was packaged well – Thank you – and they’ll be wrapped along with your 2021 calendars for my two daughters and two granddaughters (I did keep one of each for myself of course!) – I can’t wait for the holidays!! Stay warm and safe!
Hi, Susan!
Thank you so much for all the beautiful pictures! They are very uplifting and exactly what we need during this difficult pandemic.
Happy Autumn to you!
Karen L.
Thank you for the gift of your blog!! Saturday morning, only one up so far and I was able to start the day with a smile and “warm fuzzies” while sharing my tea with you and reading this. I look forward to reading the Christmas Book (we had similar inspiration books my mom had while growing up) and planning ahead with my now-long tradition of your calendar for the side of my fridge. Thank you again~ stay safe!!
Oooh, October💕 just love this season! Today, 10/3 is our 45th Anniversary! And a lovely day to read your blog. So much to enjoy here and respond to but…when I got to your giveaway of the antique Christmas book my heart stopped….I collect old books and thought right away I would start a search for it. And wow! You found one? Maybe I’ll wait to see if ??
Your Christmas book is on its way to my house, maybe today! Such a joyful time of year, we all need so badly! You are right, let’s enjoy the embers of 2020 and open our hearts for a better 2021❤️❤️
Hi Susan,
I love the sky, ✨ stars, & moon 🌝 photos…The ⭐️ star cut-out fire 🔥 pit is perfect for chilly evenings! My fav pic is Jack looking out at the 🎃 pumpkins!!! 🌻🥧🧡🍁
Your blogs always make me smile! Thank you for that! Can i send you my 2020 calendar to burn along with yours? 🤭. Hoping 2021 will bring peace to everyone. Thanks for the opportunity to possibly win quilt or book!
, Jody
Thank you for helping me see there is so much beauty all around us, we just have to look around and let it bring us a little joy and peace.
Susan, there is such magic in you!! A post from you always shows up at the precise moment that a whole lotta love is just what’s needed! Thank you !! I LOVE YOU!!! Sassy
Good morning Sue! I sat down with a cup of pumpkin spice coffee and opened up Home for Christmas. I only made it through the introduction before tears filled my eyes. Then again on page 5 when you wrote, ‘Books meant the world to me when I was a little girl’. That is exactly how I felt when I was a little girl. When I read about you and your nieces last Christmas I cried. My daughter and her family are missionaries in Thailand and the virus caused us to cancel our trip in April to visit her, her husband and our four grandbabies. It has been 16 months since I have seen them. I immediately wanted to know the name of the book that you read to them. I pictured myself reading it on Zoom to my 10 year old granddaughter, Callie. Imagine my joy when I read your blog last night and saw the book! I am on the lookout for it! Thank you, Sue, for taking me with you on your trip down memory lane. Your book, Home for Christmas, touched me deeply, invoking many wonderful memories of Christmases long ago. Blessings to you and Joe!
with love and thanks,
Vicki
Thank you Vicki . . . I’m sorry we’re all stuck so far away from people we love . . .💞
Thanks for a lovely post. The last picture would make a wonderful Halloween card!
What a lovely, joyous post! Thank you for that, and the giveaway….you are gonna love your firepit!
Dear Susan, I’m so sorry you lost your Mom. Hope you always have sweet thoughts of her.
Your pictures are beautiful and I just love the peaceful green fields of England! Nature is truly God’s gift to us! Have a wonderful, magical Fall! Love the cutout moons and stars on your new fire pit! How fun!
Susan, you are inspiring!
Hi Susan,
Thank you for sending the Magic and getting all of us in the mood for the arrival of Fall. I live in Florida, so it is even more important to cherish your blog and all the specialness you send to make my Heart Smile. I wish to attend the Virtual Tea on October 18th, but it requires purchasing the wonderful Christmas Book, which I already purchased and now have in my home awaiting the Holidays to come! So how do I attend at this point without purchasing the book a 2nd time?
Keep up the Magic in each and every day!
Thank you,
Patty Walker
Maybe give them a call and ask how you can do it? I tried to get them to have a way for people who already have the book to take part, and either they didn’t hear me, or they didn’t want to. So call them! I really want everyone to attend, but it’s better if it comes from you! xoxoxo
Yup, like so many, I wait for the morning to read your blog. Puts a happy spin on my day! Received my Home for Christmas books last week! LOVE! Thank you!
Ooooh I am SO ready for autumn and for October! Its the best time of the year! I am sitting here with your England mug that a friend sent me for my birthday a week ago 😀 I would LOVE to win the little booklet you’re giving away…I am home with two kids ‘virtual schooling’, and although this halloween and Christmas will be much different than in years past, I’m planning on making them warm, cozy ‘at home’ affairs that hopefully they will remember as lovely times in years to come. I’d love to have the little book to share with them! Rabbit rabbit!~
I collect Christmas story books! It would be perfect.
What a delicious post! Why is it I get teary eyed reading almost every post you make?
I want to be there taking that morning walk with you just once!
Lots of love to you,
Carol
Hi Susan, I am 71 years old and still, when I am ill or sad I am comforted by snuggling under a quilt my grandmother made for me. And when I am nostalgic, I reread “Twiggie” with its hand drawn illustrations. So the quilt and your new Christmas book are a touch to the heart. Thanks for the October inspiration.

I discovered your posts this year during pandemic. I look forward to you blog. I’ve read some of the past years post. I love the nostalgia and simplicity of life that they inspire. Your linens waving in the wind, your photographs of, Jack, the kitty, and the warm feeling of your kitchen. Thank you for bringing a little coziness and calm into a time of strangeness and uncertainty.
I just read through all your blog posts (with accompanying Musica!) since the pandemic began. I have been wanting to but had put it off since I hate to read them on the phone where I normally get my email. Insomnia has struck and flip-flopped my life, and so I spent some time last night catching up with you.
The last part of your post about Halloween reminds me of my girls, who began to decorate on the 29th of September, and finished on the 1st. The house is fully decked out with lights, ghosts, bats, skeletons and pumpkins. They have added spiders and webbing to one window, caution tape to another. When things are a bit closer, they will carve jack-o-lanterns. We can’t carve too close to Halloween here in Arizona as the pumpkins just cave in or mold! Since there will be no trick or treat or party with their friends this year, we will have a movie marathon, and dinner with Halloween themed food and dessert. And of course they want a bowl of candy for walk by “trick or treat”.
You are my fave since I was gifted the Summer book, complete with luminarias so long ago. Since then I have collected and loved so many of your books. Thank you for sharing with the world.
I was sorry to hear of your loss of your mom. Much love and many hugs to you.
Carla
Susan your ‘sky’ photos are gallery worthy. My favourite is the moon rising over the harbour, someone ? should paint that one, Marie
I loved the Titcomb tea party! Washington state is a long way from the east coast, but I’m determined to get there at some point. I’m sure I would love Titcombs! Right now I’m sitting in the airport about to start my adventure in flying during the pandemic. My girl is moving back home from SLO! I’m flying to her and we’re taking a 10 day road trip through the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and Arches National parks! And camping! Egads! Hope it’s not too cold! I’m saving my Home For Christmas to read when the season arrives. Can’t wait! Thank you, Susan, for the positive energy you exude! I’m still looking hard for the good everyday! Blessings my friend!
Dear Susan, this is my first ever comment as a blog lurker for several years now, enjoying each blog more than the last. I’ve read all your books, hooked by the first one found on the new book shelf in my FL library years ago during our annual hiatus from DE. I dabble in watercolors in FL and was inspired instantly by your enormous talent and richness of words. Will order your Christmas book now to add to my dream reads. Thank you for sharing your warmth with all of us! Love to you, Gerri
💝
Just love these posts! They make my heart happy. Loved all the beautiful pictures. I have your Autumn book, that zi have had many years, placed on my coffee table. I should be receiving your new Christmas one soon. Many blessings!
Dear Friend,
I have set out all of the ingredients for your divine Cornmeal Blueberry Pancakes making for a wonderful breakfast on this bright and chilly morning here in Maryland. This recipe is a family favorite and I thank you for sharing it. I started my day very early as I wanted to wander through your latest post in the stillness of the morning taking time to savor every joyful word and image. While most of the world outside of our cozy homes is reeling from still another unthinkable bit of news, it is a great comfort to remember all of the loveliness just outside our front doors. Delicious treats, dear friends, blue skies and now Fall! Happiness is everywhere! Love to all, Deborah
Wonderful post! I’m all relaxed now. And, I’m so sorry to hear of your sweet Mommy’s passing😢I know what a touchstone she was for you. Got your Xmas books the other day- one for me and one for my sis. I’m trying to wait until Xmastime to read but not sure I’ll be able to! Have fun with your new fire pit! Love a good Autumn fire❤️🔥
You never disappoint in elevating my spirits. Always good for my soul. Happy Autumn & blessings to you.
Once again, your beautiful pictures, art work, quotes and sharing of your life has brought a lift to our day. Blessings to you and Joe!
