What Ever Happened to HOLLY OAK???

Hello Darling People!  I’ve noticed in your comments that some of you think I am giving away the very first Beatrix Potter Person I ever bought.  Some are saying thank you, you are so generous. But it isn’t true. To let that stand would be doing a Giveaway under false presences. I could never do this . . . for more reasons than one. MUSICA?

IMG_6863

Remember this?

IMG_6853

The time I showed you Joe’s special brand of handiness when he was in process of healing Jemima’s broken neck?  See the chip on the left side of her bill?  No, I would never foist this girl off on some unsuspecting YOU. She’s mine, the first BP Person I ever got, and I will continue to paste her back together (or ask Joe to do it), as needed, for as long as I live.

IMG_6856

I’ve never quite gotten over seeing how he did this ~ with one large rubber band and half a toothpick. I couldn’t do it in a thousand years. Joe is so talented. And it worked, her neck is back on and she’s “good as new!”

IMG_2495BUT a few years back, I acquired a brand new girl so now, until right now anyway, I have two . . . I’ll keep the old one, and you’ll get the “new” one (they were both actually born the same year, 1948, five years after Beatrix Potter died). There’s no glue-chain around your Jemima’s neck . . . Yours is perfect with bill totally intact. And the wonderful Walking with Beatrix Potter book is for you too. Signed by me, with your name, as soon as I find out who you are. I hope you’re ready, Because, It’s Time. Thank you for taking part in this Giveaway, I love your wonderful comments! Okay, here we go . . . .

🎵 Jaa-ack? Go get her! 🎶

While we’re waiting for Jack to bring Vanna down … I thought I’d tell you Jack’s new trick. I get his ponytail band ready for shooting (so he can fetch it back to me), I pull it back, Jack 2016 susan branch calendarstretching it and pointing it in Jack’s direction, his eyes are locked on me … I say, “Ready?”  And, every time I say, “Ready?” ~  he SAYS, “E-e-e-reusss,” and burrows down even more in alert cat-faced readiness. It sounds like “YES” to me. He doesn’t say anything unless I ask him if he’s ready. So, you know what that means . . . ? While we were away Jack learned English. Like in Love Actually, he wanted to be able to talk to us in our own language, “just in cases.” He has an accent (coming from another land originally), so it’s not perfect yet, but he can talk! Such a smart boy.

rabbit

Handsome too.  And Now . . . Oh, my . . . Vanna has already made the LEAP. She’s IN the barrel, scissor-kicking to the bottom (still in her pink nightgown ~ she was half asleep, got IMG_2489in late last night from her Euro-trash-type carousing 😜 and not in the mood to get into her mermaid suit) . . . over 2,000 little slips of paper with your names on them are whirling and twirling in a veritable vortex ~  it’s quite a sight ~~~ her long arm is coming up through it all ~ and now, she’s UP!  And in her hand, between her long elegant fingers, each wearing a thin golden ring, her manicured nails painted with blue polish, there’s just one little slip of paper which she tossed in my lap, and headed off for the coffee pot. And SO, the winner of our darling Beatrix Potter Person AND wonderful book, which I will be personalizing IS . . .

C L Y D E N E    D U R A N

And so that’s it! Can’t be too many with that name! The hardest thing about Giveaways is picking a winner. It’s a love/hate thing for me. Hard to only have one winner. But the “reward” for all of you who aren’t named Clydene is this: I thought I would answer the MOST-asked question on my Book Tour. I took questions at the end of each talk, and every time, someone would say, What happened to that little house? Do you still own it? What happened to . . .

Home at Last

sbpixThe one with the little “guest shack” in the backyard? Where the cows from the farm next door came to have snacks? That Holly Oak?   Well, let me tell you. Here’s what happened:  There I was, minding my own business, living in this little house, working on making a life, pretty sure I was meant to be alone and probably done with men forever,  and then, out of the blue, when I wasn’t looking, what showed up but . . .afineromance

img137

And believe it or not, I still managed to find two main things wrong with him: 1. He was a baby, too young, five years younger than me, and 2. Way too handsome, handsome being dangerous.  But he was also a tall man, with a beard, a 6’2″ Leo who could cook. Everything I’d mentioned in my diary that I thought might work for me. Everything the tea leaves had told me he would be.💖

sue and joe

And he was persistent. Look at those eyes. Plus, as it turned out, he loved Christmas, and riding the train, and sailing on ocean liners, and fires in the winter, and he could fix anything and cook lobsters, so, tell me, what choice did I have but to snap him up before he got away???? After a year or so, we began to notice that Holly Oak was too small for both of us!  Joe dwarfed everything and felt closed in, my art was taking over the house.  Very casually, we began to look for a new place to live. And one day he came home and said . . . Let’s go look at a house … let’s go look at this:

July 08 Vineyard 642words fairytale dreamEeek, I screamed. And to make a long story short, we fell madly in love with this dream house, and have lived here since 1989. We bought it in the days when Island houses were affordable.  Although we were turned down for two loan applications before anyone would trust that we could pay for it, the third time was the charm. Even we didn’t know for sure if we could make that payment, but I told Joe that even if we lived there for just one year, and then had to sell it, it would still be worth it.

IMG_1618

And like all the people who’ve lived here since it was built in 1849, some part of our spirits will remain forever in this inspirational House of Creativity.IMG_7085

My house

IMG_2393

And every season is wonderful here. If we ever sell this house, we’ve already decided to offer it to you guys first . . . it would be wonderful if a friend who appreciates it would be the one to live here after us . . . so put that on your calendar. 😽

sbpix

This was the dining room when we first moved in, complete with pineapple wallpaper . . . There’s a snippet on the left of my old bedroom curtains from Holly Oak which I made from tablecloths all those years ago. I STILL have the last fragment of one as the curtain in our downstairs bathroom. I baby it, so it will last, but it’s not long for this world.

sbpix

And after a while, we redid the dining room and it looked like this . . .

table setting dinner party

There have been many wonderful parties in this house . . .

memoriesSomething tells me it was all Julia Child’s idea!

thick

The house has an old-fashioned pantry . . . there’s another fridge in there, plus the washer and dryer, and baskets hang from the rafters in the peaked roof.

June 2010 065

And a great old kitchen . . . we bought the stove at a store called, of all the perfect things, “Stove Heaven,” and put in the wood floor, but almost everything else is original to the 1950s, when Dr. Bowditch, the previous owner, made the cabinets, the scalloped piece over the sink, and put “blue marble” linoleum down for the counters.

But in order to buy this house, I had to sell Holly Oak. So I sold it to my girlfriend Elizabeth!  She and her husband owned it for a few years, but then they had to sell it too, and now it has a very nice woman living in it . . . who I wish would win the lottery or have some other wonderful thing happen so she would move to Paris and let me have my house back!  I would have such fun with that house! I have all sorts of dreams about it.

And it looks like this! We were invited in to see it and have tea in the backyard . . . she’s really taken perfect care of Holly Oak. It still has the little porch Carlton built for me.

charm

The shack is still there! “The size of two king-sized beds, half bed and half floor.”

IMG_8706

And there’s the deck my dad built.

IMG_8682There were lots of things I recognized, some bits of old wallpaper, the writing I did on the wall, and the cupboards Carl made with the hearts in them. I don’t tell anyone where the house is, the owner has added on, so it looks a little different, and I was careful in the book to give the wrong directions to get there . . . Just in cases. I want the very sweet woman that lives on that quiet road in the woods to continue liking me and not take my name in vain. So that’s what happened to Holly Oak! I should have remembered to put all this in the Epilogue in the book, but I forgot.  I’ll do it for the next printing.

IMG_2509

And what have I been up to?  Nesting!!! Taking deep breaths. Filling my vases with flowers. Reveling in the magic of an ordinary day!

Dreaming about our upcoming trip on the Queen Mary 2 . . . Carlton stopped by the other day to give us a present . . . that ship model! So it’s my newest stove-top decor.

And, we’re in the throes of planning a big ol’ birthday party for Joe! Rachel and Paul and Siobhan are all coming from England . . . if you read A Fine Romance, I’m sure you’ll remember who they are, plus about 100 more of Joe’s nearest and dearest, including Diana, Elaine and Elizabeth, coming from California.  I’ll be sure to take pictures and show you!

IMG_6296

Time to light the twinkle lights for dinner in the garden. I’m going to make something delicious, I just don’t know what it is yet!!!

Perhaps something like this . . .

IMG_2297

Cicadas are singing like crazy this quiet afternoon, a sound that tells us it’s the beginning of the end of summer. It’s something we didn’t have in California, the cicadas high pitched noise, like a police whistle that never ends.  A bumper crop of blueberries are beginning to ripen out on the dirt road where we walk, and the very first leaves, just one or two, have turned orange.  Today’s my dad’s 93rd Birthday. I’ve been thinking a lot about him, remembering all the little things. Not to worry, I only feel blessed and lucky.Time ...

IMG_7439

And in the meantime, I’m doing what I always do, staying on the sunny side of life.inthe gardenJust about to start writing us a new WILLARD!  If there is still anyone left who doesn’t know what that is, I would be shocked, but just in cases, click there, and you can read about my Newsletter that will just show up in your email (whenever I manage to get one done!). Sign up if you haven’t, and put your mom on too, and your BFF, because it’s free and this next one is going to be a dilly. All about our trip to England and Scotland.

Byee for now Girlfriends . . . Hope your August is wonderful! Start thinking about what you’re going to wear in Scotland, I think it’s going to be COLD up there! XOXOsealed with a kiss

  1. Susan,

I loved reading the story of Holly Oak, Susan. You have such a gentle way of writing that brings the reader in and makes her (or him, but especially her) feel like you are just sitting having a conversation over tea. I just tonight finished reading A Fine Romance, an experience that I am still processing. Pure delight. I cannot wait to read the other two books next! I think I’m going to have to order signed copies because I love the idea of them coming from your hands to mine.

  2. I loved reading this. So enjoyable. Thank you. You are like a best friend to thousands!

  3. Susan, I enjoyed hearing more about your beloved Holly Oak. I’m always amazed at the progression of photos you share about everything. Especially the interior of your homes—I imagine you have scanned all of your old photos and are quite organized with them. That’s a job that I must begin. Enjoy your nesting and party preparations. You are the best, dear one. xoxo ♥

  4. Jan Lane says:

Wishing you a wonderful holiday! Enjoy every moment, and be sure to document every little experience. We will all be waiting!

  5. Christine says:

Thank you for more info on Holly Oak. We always like to get “the rest of the story.” But you must get Holly Oak back for your movie as they might want to film it there! At least the outside shots. (I have this all planned out of course). Looking forward to your Scotland and England trip this Fall. Are we going to get an Outlander tour of sorts? Yes, better pack some warm clothes for Scotland. Or just plan to buy some woolens over there. Lots of goodies there.

  6. Mare Hare says:

Thanks you for telling us how you found your current home and what happened to Holly Oak. I so wondered after ready the Martha’s Vinyard book which I have reread three times now! So charming and inspiring. You’re the best S.B. <3

  7. Nele from Michigan says:

Love your blog… Love your positive attitude… Love your stories. I’m excited that you are going back to England and Scotland and can hardly wait to hear all about it.. A place that I will probably every visit, but feel like I’ve already been there because of the amazing way you take us along..
God gave you SUCH a gift and feel blest to be the recipient of all your talents!

I too wondered about Holly Oak.. I bet it was difficult to give it up..
    Happy Birthday, Joe! 🙂

  8. Njean says:

I am so glad you shared what happened to Holly Oak! Maybe someday it will be yours again. It is nice to here you are nesting. I love to do that. Take care and I am waiting for the next Willard. I love them, I have all of them printed and reread them at times.

  9. Connecticut Sandie says:

Thank you! I wondered too, what happened to Holly Oak and how it was you and Joe came to live in the big white house. And how cute that you would sell it to one of us. Except that you can’t ever, ever move. How could you? Some day, it shall become The Susan Branch House and Museum (with an adorable gift shop somewhere on the grounds-maybe a dainty little shed), open for tours, just like Beatrix Potter’s home, so that generations after us can visit and see where you created.

    • sbranch says:

LOL. Well, I was thinking that Holly Oak might be that, if I ever got it back! Easier to take care of!

  10. Rose Ann Bacher-Giallombardo says:

Your “Holly Oak” was my “Carriage House” on East Ave. across from “The George Eastman House” When I found her & bought her shortly after my husband Joe died, it helped me grieve my heart out & then it helped me heal.
I’ve since moved & married again to another wonderful man also named Joe.
Susan, I have a lovely quote for you just to let you know how happy you have made me whenever I read one of your books or anything else that you write!
Here it goes: “Let us be grateful to people who make us happy; They are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” MARCEL PROUST

  11. Sandy says:

I always so appreciate the way you celebrate the ordinaries of life. About the time I start thinking, I gotta do something serious with my life, I read your blog and somehow my ordinary little life is just right. Thank you, bless you for that. 🙂

  12. Mary Whiting says:

Thank you, Susan, for the photos of your beautiful home. I LOVE the wallpaper in your dining room….every time I see it in a photo I want to ask you for information on it….do you remember the name or the make or the pattern by any chance? I would LOVE to read a book about your current home and you adventure with Joe moving in and making it yours. When we visited Martha’s Vineyard some years ago we drove by and took a few pictures of your home and it is beautiful and as cozy as come be. Lucky, lucky girl.
    XO Mary

    • sbranch says:

I’ll do a book about HOME next . . . maybe, after resting up a bit! I’m sorry, I DON’T remember the name of the wallpaper. They change them all the time, so mostly I think you’d have to look for one that looks like it. Thank you, Mary!

  13. audrey B says:

    Yes, a HOME❤️ book. Please?

  14. Kit says:

So good to hear that you are doing well. I love hearing about your home and it’s history. I am glad you and Joe found the perfect place for your love. It is truly a wonderful house. Looking forward to going on our trip! It will make for a fun Fall. 🙂 Take care. Kit

  15. Pamela C. Betz says:

Susan–Our Fathers are the same age or about. My Dad was born in June of 22. He passed away 1 and a half yrs. ago. I am amazed at how often I turn my thoughts to him. I guess I did when he was here, but now it stops me in my track. It is good! Pam

  16. Judy in Oregon says:

I enjoyed the update on Holly Oak and it is nice to know that it has been well taken care of by the owners after you. Your current home would be a dream for me. I love older homes especially ones with a pantry.

  17. Julia Walker says:

Dear Susan, Your blog is the bright spot in my day! Thank you. What a beautiful deck your dad built. No wonder you’d like to own the cottage again! I want to ask if you’ve seen Beatrix Potter’s “journal?” I ordered it several years ago, and it’s so wonderful~a replica of her original scrapbook. If you don’t have it, I’ll send mine to you. Let me know. Take gentle care. Julia

  18. Erin S. says:

I’ve wondered about Holly Oak, too, so thanks for the update! And thank you (again!) for taking us all along, albeit vicariously, on your upcoming voyage. You’re the best!

  19. Daralyn says:

    🙂 Thank you …

  20. sylvia in seattle says:

What a sweetheart is Carlton to bring you and Joe that model boat! Did he make it I wonder? Love the pictures of you and Joe in younger days. I’m so glad Jack is finally learning to talk 🙂 Congrats to Clydene. It’s good you explained about Jemima – I remembered the clever repair of the original at once on seeing the picture with rubber band and toothpick. Birthday celebrations this week here as well – my son and I, Aug 5 and Aug 7. Max treated me and Heidi, my daughter, to brunch and we all ate BACON! Yum a rare treat. Happy Birthday to Joe. Have a fun time with the lovely English people.

    • sbranch says:

Carl didn’t make the little ship, he just likes old things, and found it somewhere along the way … and thought of us! xoxo

  21. Donna Klein says:

    Hi Susan,
Yes please, I would love to see you do a HOME book!
I loved reading the update on Holly Oak! The first house I owned and lived in with my husband and 2 little boys was a block off a lake and only 600 square feet! Even though we only lived there 4 years, I loved that little house and still have dreams about it.
I sometimes watch that Tiny Homes show and think yes, we were ahead of our time!
Cheers to you, and hope you are enjoying a bit of relaxation 🙂

  22. Marilyn S says:

If you ever do decide to sell Spring Street, I think all of us girlfriends should pool our resources and buy it. Then we will create the Susan Branch Trust and people can visit the home of our favorite writer and artist for years to come just like Beatrix Potter’s home.😊

  23. Joann says:

So happy to hear from you and to hear all about Holly Oak!! I have but a minute as I’m knee deep in home clean-up because we had a BIG wedding last weekend. Rod’s son Danny got married and we did the rehearsal dinner for 35 in a park…. we made it extra cutesy and fun but that took LOTS of creative effort (all fun) but made a big mess.

I always make a big mess when I’m most creative….so now time to recover, clean-up, and get things back together………….. Here’s my best suggestion for Scotland. Get some wool socks!! I absolutely LOVE my SMART WOOl medium weight socks—they kind of hug the feet and are oh so warm, plus they come in cute patterns and are just divine.

    OK, gotta go…………xoxo

    • sbranch says:

I’m sure your party was WONDERFUL, knowing you Joann! As for the socks, Got em! I’m now looking for waterproof skirt, jacket, pants . . . etc.!

  24. Martha says:

Thank you so very much for answering the question not only I was thinking about but others too . . . what ever happened to Holly Oak? Glad it’s in good hands. I’m inspired to read your book again! Liked your comment about Joe looking dangerously handsome! I always look forward to reading your posts!

  25. Jennie Ambrosio says:

Congratulations Clydene! You are one lucky duck (goose?) And a very Happy Birthday to Joe! He sounds like a very kind man, and that is the best kind. Handsome is just icing on the cake 😉 I need a Joe of my own to take me to England, and do the things you both enjoy, and that I would enjoy! I have a Tom, but he does not care for antique stores and old houses and tea, and so many of the things that make life worth living. But he is kind and handsome in other ways, so I’m not complaining. I’ll just have to go to England with a girlfriend some day! I love what you said about “reveling in the magic of an ordinary day”. Words to live by! 🙂 Thanks for letting us all live vicariously thru you, and I look forward to sneaking into you suitcase for your next trip. Enjoy! Jennie

  26. Linda Metcalf says:

I remember being so excited during the planning for our overseas trips! The UK and Ireland are the best places in the world to visit. Isn’t it amazing how we fall in love? A higher power at work me thinks! Love your olden little house and the now bigger one is to die for. Soft gentle love all around.

  27. Caroline says:

Have you ever seen a drawing by Rorert Potter of a duck flying wearing a shawl . Noe I need to find it in one of my books. I was stunned – Beatrix Potter’s father !!!!???

Holly Oak seems a beautiful spot.

Hoping this enters me in the giveaway

    Caroline

Ps pet the cars for me

  28. Cheri Wilson says:

From what I’ve seen of your wardrobe, it is perfect for Scotland. Can’t wait to read what you think of Edinburgh and Glasgow. So much antiquity and charm. I will be “green” reading about it because they are two of my favorite cities in the whole world. Bring it back to us, Susan, as you always do.

  29. JoAnne says:

Your picture of Jemima with the rubber band and half toothpick is a sign of true love right there – so sweet and Joe is such a cutie too! I loved this post and reading about Holly Oak. Thanks for sharing it with us!

    • Heidi Finlayson says:

Hi Susan, It’s Heidi from Portland, Oregon. My husband and I will be on Martha’s Vineyard Sept 29-Oct 7. We are staying at the Norde House! So sad you won’t be there. Can you give us any suggestions on the following: Best Lobster (whether casual or not), and Best Quality Upscale Grocery Store. Also, I made something for you and would like to leave it somewhere if possible. Your friend’s bookstore, or???? Really looking forward to it. Jumping over to Nantucket for a night mid week. Any suggestions on anything there? Thanks, Miss!

      • sbranch says:

The best grocery store is just your basic Cronigs, but they have everything … although it’s not like some SUPER markets off-island. Best lobster, I’d go to the Square Rigger . . . they have tons of delicious things, very casual, like most restaurants on the Island. For Nantucket, be sure to get out to the area they call Siasconset … have dinner there at the wonderful, elegant Chanticleer Restaurant. You can leave me something at the bookstore . . . I think they’ll save it for me, but I don’t get home until after Thanksgiving! Have a wonderful visit Heidi! Prepare to fall in love!

  31. Nicoline Bostens says:

    Dear Susan,
Oh the story of Holly Oak, its just so nice to know what happened, thank you!
I was wondering, if you are thinking of writing another (cook) book in the future…You once mentioned a Breakfast book, or something with pancakes, I’m not sure… Would a vegetarian cookbook be something you’d consider?
Not long now, before you cross the ocean, heading to good old Great Britain! I know you like to visit the gorgeous places owned by the National Trust, and I hope you’ll be able to go visit one in Hampshire.
    Its called Mottisfont, and its just 30 minutes from Southampton. The house is famous for their rose garden. The roses might be over when you arrive, but guess what, they have an exhibition of Beatrix Potter drawings! This is on their site;
16 July – 18 September, 11am – 5pm: a very special exhibition – the only one in the south of England – marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of Beatrix Potter, featuring 30 original drawings and watercolours
    and here’s the link;

    http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/mottisfont

Have a lovely rest of the weekend, and good luck with the preparations for Joe’s party!
    Best wishes from Nicoline

  32. Amylisa says:

Oh my goodness, I just started reading Martha’s Vineyard~Isle of Dreams last night and I love love love it. So timely for me too as my life has recently changed so much, and I have a lot more alone time now since not one but two of my kids moved out last month. The house felt so empty it hurt. Your new book is encouraging and inspiring me as I rebuild my life. My nest is not entirely empty and I am still very busy some times. My youngest son has autism and things have been very hard lately. Your books encourage and remind me to let myself enjoy simple things in life and help me to lighten up. I love this latest post too, I was hoping to find a new post from you today. I wish I could write more but I need to go. Thanks for this new book and I Love you Susan!

  33. Cheryl McBride says:

Susan, did Joe remember to give you the little pin cushion I made for you? I gave it to him in Denver. It was just a small token of a “virtual” friendship ❤️

    • sbranch says:

That was so sweet of you Cheryl. I wish I could thank everyone for the homemade everything they brought to the signings… and all the cookies! It was amazing! xoxo

  34. Robin on the Vineyard says:

Susan, it was nice to see you yesterday. This blog post is one of my favorites of all time. I love the many photos of Holly Oak and of your current house. There isn’t a photo of it here, but for the other blog readers, the bedroom Susan added on with it’s cathedral ceiling was fabulous. I remember the chest filled with beautiful quilts and I never stopped buying pretty quilts since then so that I could pile them up the same way. Love the earlier photos of oh-so-handsome Joe. I started reading your new book, Martha’s Vineyard, Isle of Dreams last night and can barely put it down!

  35. Janet Pere says:

    Susan
I just read a “Fine Romance” and did not want it to end. Your writing, quotes and photos were so inspiring.. I just ordered Isle of Dreams and can’t wait to receive it. After reading fine romance I have decided to take all of my 35 years of travel photos and scan them and make little hard bound books!! I love the computer for photos but love the “romance” of books.. Thanks for a lovely blog and your reminders to enjoy the everyday. Janet Perez, Miami, Fl

This post has been one of my favorites. Letting us into to your house (houses), is such a treat. It reminds me of the magazine that Mary Englebreit used to publish and in each issue you would get to see homes and studios of the featured artists. So much fun! Artists have always been my favorite people, next to cooks! I am also, anxiously awaiting your visits with Siobhan, Rachel and Paul. When you write about them, well, that too, makes my day. I love the photo you have in your book of Siobhan standing in her house under the fairy twinkle lights. Oh, and Alice, hopefully we will see her too!

  37. LYNN says:

“Imagine how our lives would be if all the powers that be contrived to feed our souls with positive words and deeds.” – Susan Branch

Perfect quote for what is going on in the world right now. I become absorbed in your blog and then come upon the news and just can’t reconcile the different outlooks on life. I am going to choose the sunny side with you!

  38. I’m glad I’m not the only one who dreams about buying back my first house. Like you, I was a single woman who bought a house before it was something women did. It was tiny, like yours, too. Your Dad built you a deck, and my Dad gutted half the house and built me a big closet for the bedroom, refurbished the entire (tiny) bathroom and insulated the place. Like you, I would have fun turning it into my own little dollhouse/office. *Sigh* Maybe one day.

I’ve read Martha’s Vineyard, Isle of Dreams, at least 8 times since it came out. It speaks to me on so many levels, not the least of which is as a writer. Thank you for sharing your journey in the three books.

P.S. I’m was so sorry to hear of your recent loss. A girl never really gets over the loss of her Dad. (Mine passed away 7 years ago this October.)

    • sbranch says:

Thank you Lorraine . . . And I think you’re right. Not something we get over, just another something we learn to live with against our will. SO happy you liked Isle of Dreams! xoxo

    • Susan Morgon ( Ohio gal from SoCal ) says:

I so agree, Lorraine! My dad passed away back in ’95. When he was diagnosed then with liver cancer, I felt like I was 39 going on 12. There’s just something special about our daddies!

  39. Ahh, always the bridesmaid and never the bride, again, lol Congrats to your lucky winner! I, too, had wondered what happened to your lovely little Holly Oak. Thank you so much for tying up any loose ends and enlightening us all! Love the story of how you came upon your present home as well. I love both of your homes. Each room screams “you” and that is what a welcoming, comfortable home sweet home should do. Thanks for all that you share with us. You are incredible. I can’t wait for Willard to come out! Love all that you share. xoxo
PS – Cicadas, a sound I miss over here. Indeed summer is fast a passin’ and we’ll soon be into autumn things. LOVE the birdies in the bath. One of my greatest joys is watching our resident black bird couple visit ours and have a good splash, although they always do it one at a time and not together! Guess we need a larger bird bath!

    • sbranch says:

No cicadas? What are your harbingers of fall? We’ve never been to England in the fall…can’t wait!

  40. Kathy Hughes says:

Susan, my sister and I didn’t make it to Asheville to meet you and hear you speak and were sooo disappointed. That just means you need to be working on a book soon and have at least one more book signing tour to give us another opportunity. What follows a trilogy??? Your girlfriends don’t ask for much. Hehe! 🙂 You have my deepest sympathy for the loss of your precious father. I loved reading his comments and your stories about him. He gave you so many wonderful memories just as my dad did. When we have fathers in our lives, we are indeed fortunate and often just take it for granted. You bring so much sunshine into the lives of your girlfriends. You must realize it from the wonderful comments, but I just have to say it one more time. So happy that I’m included in that group. Love your books, your blog, Willard, you and Joe! Happy birthday early to dear Joe!

  41. Gill says:

Have you read Lillian Beckworth’s stories of life in the Scottish isles? They are great fun and I highly recommend them. The first one is called ” The Hills Is Lonely” and there are six more after that! Just incase you need something to do on the Queen Mary😉!

  42. Harriett says:

Oh my goodness, what a wonderful post ~ to start out with Jemima and end up with Joe! Holly Oak and everything in-between. Fill your vases with flowers, dance in the moonlight at your pool party, and remember we are all here lapping it up and being grateful for each day under the sun. You go girl.

    • sbranch says:

We’ll dance in the moonlight, no doubt, under the twinkle lights, but there’s no pool so if worse comest to worst, we’ll just have to go jump into the ocean! xoxo Thank you Harriet!

  43. Cyndi in NC says:

I missed the drawing, I missed saying Happy Birthday to your beloved Dad. I know he is smiling down on you everyday. *S* I think mine is busy guarding over my Mom right now. She needs his protective presence right now. I’ve always loved your house but Holly Oak speaks to me too. I can see myself sitting with the fire going reading, or watching a movie or chatting with friends. What a wonderful place is was for you to go to. Obviously it was meant to be for you. Things happen for a reason even thought we can’t always see what it is. I hope she decides to sell it at some point so you can buy it back. We’ll keep our fingers crossed on the lottery!! *L* As to Jemima, I have one too so I’m not that broke up I didn’t get in on the drawing and I’m sure that Clydene will love it! Congrats!

  44. Kathy Smith says:

Ohhh…lucky Clydene! Loved hearing about Holly Oak, recalling how you met Joe, etc.
Had my neighbor over the other day & her sister in law is also a publisher of travel books & recipes who lives on Martha’s Vineyard. I asked my friend if she had read the book about M Vineyard & she had NOT. I went right to my book shelf and loaned it to her! I told her all about you–she asked if I knew you! I had to say no, but I sure feel like I do!! I then showed her all the other books I have that you’ve written… Never stop!! Have a wonderful birthday planning time for Joe.

  45. Carol Maurer~~~~ Kennewick, Wa says:

    Hi Susan~~~

I very much enjoyed reading the update on Holly Oak. I don’t blame you for wanting it back. It’s so cozy looking with all the flowers and plants around both the front and back. Interesting that you didn’t give us the right directions to get to the house, but I don’t blame you for not wanting to interrupt the life of the woman that lives there now.

When exactly is Joes birthday? You didn’t say. Let the party begin! It’s so cool that your England friends can be there to help celebrate.

I’m looking forward to being part of your trip to England and Scotland. My husband’s ancestors were originally from Scotland. I’m going to be starting my search this fall, but, for right now, I know not where they were located in Scotland. Also have a friend that used to live in Durham, England that moved several years ago to Kelso, Scotland.

    xoxox,
    Carol M
P.S. I loved the pictures of what the dinning room looked like when you bought your current house.

    • sbranch says:

Joe’s birthday is on Sunday, August 14, the day before Julia Child’s. They are exactly 50 years and one day apart in age!

  46. Paula Lewis says:

Hi Susan…I always “pretended”, in my mind, you still had Holly Oak as your getaway studio! It’s good to know that you still have a connection through the current owner. Loved all the pictures….old and new.

  47. Kathie says:

Happy Birthday, Joe! It’s a wonderful month for a birthday; and September, too, when most of my family were born. We had our Leos, though, too, and aren’t they wonderful? Commanding and inspirational…..great leaders and wonderful friends. True blue. We are watching fires here in the West. You know how that is. Walker and Eels, two protestant missionaries who manned a mission among the Spokane Indians near Ford, WA, today, commented in their diaries about the “smoke” of August. That was about 1840, when their only neighbors were the Indians and the Hudson’s Bay Company post near Colville. The two families built log homes and suffered through several seasons before being re-called to Oregon following the Whitman Massacre. They never returned to their little log homes on Walker’s Prairie, so-named after their exit. Nothing is left of those little log houses, 174 years later. The prairies and forests, in those early days, simply burned themselves out. Most were lightning-caused. But I digress. Thought of you fondly while watching “Empire Falls” where actor, Ed Harris (as Miles, in the show), visits Martha’s Vineyard to help his daughter heal from a trauma. His father is played by an aged Paul Newman. The villainess is none other than JoAnn Woodward. What a cast! Too bad it didn’t make the cut and become a series. I would have watched it regularly. I found the pilot on Amazon. So lovely and over too soon. Rest now and you’ll be ready for more adventures soon. We’re so looking forward to it, if Joe allows us along, one more time. I hope he does! Ta-ta and we love you very much.

  48. Karen Read says:

For some crazy reason Susan, I never written to you??!!! Even though I tell everyone I know about you. I have almost all of your books and I cherish them.
Your books make the most wonderful gifts. I am halfway through the Isle of Dreams. I keep putting it down because I don’t want it to end:(
You capture what I think is the essence of life.
Someday I want to meet you…I feel like you touch all of our hearts. I Love the music the old movies and your beautiful artwork.
Thank you with all my heart xoxo Karen

  49. Vicki In Alabama says:

Settled! I am looking forward to your next book, “Home with Susan Branch”.(I took the liberty of suggesting a name for your book, lol! ) I am loving all the girlfriend comments about Holly Oak, even reminders of a movie coming! And I have always wanted to go to Scotland, my ancestral home. If I cannot go to Scotland, I am grateful for someone who will go and send me fun pictures and stories about their adventures. To go to England and Scotland would be a dream adventure to me. So looking forward to hearing about this upcoming trip. I check your blog every day to make sure I have not missed an update.
You have truly set girlfriends hearts on fire for all things home, nesting, adventure and love of life. We love you Susan! It is encouraging to “be with” (by this blog) others who enjoy common things.

  50. Helen C. Stetina says:

Dear Susan. I absolutely love you and everything you write/draw/paint. You and I would be peas-in-a-pod, birds-of-a-feather, kindred spirits, BFFS ❤️ And you’re going to Scotland with the love-of-your-life…so cool. Been there with my love twice, for our 20th and 30th anniversaries…and we’d go again and again and again. Wish we could “talk”…but I will settle for these wonderful blogs and such. Have a beautiful day in your enchanted world and know you have MANY friends out there, including, moi ❤️

  51. Nancy Giokaris says:

Okay, I am wishing for you that the nice lady living in Holly Oak house does indeed win the lottery and decide to move from the house. It would be fun for you to have it back in your family. Always always love your stories!!💗💕💗
Happy August to you and Joe and your sweet kitty cats💕
    Best, Nancy

  52. Jeannie says:

Susan, I read both of your books I ordered from you this spring and I wish I
could be into the right words how much I loved reading those books. It was my bedtime reading. I did not want “A Fine Romance” to end. Your writing is
so calming, fun, inspiring and I felt like I was living your life through the book. If I could move into Holly Oak, I would be there tonight! “Martha’s Vineyard-
Isle of Dreams” was equally as enjoyable. I was so sorry to read about your Dad in your last blog. I hope the healing has started and the great memories stay
with you every day. Thank you ~ I will surely read these books again and again.

  53. Frances Fowler says:

Oh, this post answered a question I’ve always had (but didn’t wish to pry at your book-signing by asking)……how did you and Joe come to live in your house? On the fortuitous occasion I discovered your Christmas book after it came out — probably at the now defunct Walden Books — , I remember looking on the back jacket cover to see you waving in your merry red skirt and sweater while walking towards your beautiful old house; snow covered the ground and the grey skies made me think of that cold, snowy smell. And I first read about Joe Hall (best wishes for a happy birthday!), your sweetheart to whom you dedicated kisses all year long :-). I loved how this post just tied it all together! And congrats to Clydene! My professor dad would also have come up with a highly successful rubber band/toothpick tourniquet, but I suspect a similar experiment by me would have resulted in a small explosion of poor Jemima. Love the pictures of you and Joe, Holly Oak, and the ever hilarious Jack. Finally, sending a cyber hug because of your dad’s 93rd birthday; you all are so blessed to have had such an amazing father.

  54. ELyse Adams says:

    HI Susan
WHat a great post. your House the white one is my screen saver. it has been for many
Years! IT always cheers me up! I love all of your books and the beautiful inspiration you have
Given to me! THe new books are fabulous! my husband and son gave them to me for
MOthers day! I love dreaming away with them! I am glad that Holly oak is in good shape!
I hope that your fall will bring joy and great times to you and Joe!
    All the best
    ELyse

  55. Hi Susan and Joe! Love both of your houses! Please someday when you have had lots of rest, think about doing a little decorating book. In the mean time, enjoy Scotland! It is one of my most favorite places to visit! I hope you can make a stop at Scone Palace. If you can stop there, I hope you have tea and scones while you are there! Their scones are fantastic! It could be the ambience though. :o)

    Its called Mottisfont, and its just 30 minutes from Southampton. The house is famous for their rose garden. The roses might be over when you arrive, but guess what, they have an exhibition of Beatrix Potter drawings! This is on their site;
16 July – 18 September, 11am – 5pm: a very special exhibition – the only one in the south of England – marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of Beatrix Potter, featuring 30 original drawings and watercolours
    and here’s the link;

    nationaltrust.org.uk/mottisfont

Have a lovely rest of the day, and good luck with the preparations for Joe’s party!
    Best wishes from Nicoline

    • sbranch says:

We tried to go there last time . . . I forget what happened, but it’s on my list! Thank you for the reminder Nicoline!

  57. Jayne McLeod says:

oh my I have missed you and this wonderful encouraging fun filled site … YOU and your writing are such a delight to my heart … thank you ! YOU get yourself going on that new Willard and send it out soon please.
I have a copy of the very first Willard … SNAIL MAILED to me, YES, yes, you read me right … SNAIL MAILED !!! okay catch your breath … I can still remember how excited I was the day it came in the mail, to think that you would actually answer my request for a copy, but you did !!
I plan to keep it forever and enjoy reading it over and over and over every time I come across it in my files. I sure do miss snail mail, but I am looking forward to the next Willard you are working on too … stay healthy and happy and enjoy the SONshine. Jayne (Canada)

    • sbranch says:

And in those days, before computers, the only way you could have gotten on that list is because you wrote me a letter … I saved all the letters, and after several years, we made the mailing list from those wonderful sweet letters!

  58. Barb U from Ohio says:

Thank you,Susan, for finally telling us what happened to Holly Oak, for anyone whose read Martha’s Vineyard Isle of Dreams would really want to know what happened to that little house you turned into such a cosy home. When my dad passed and mom came to live with me, she had to put their house up for sale, a place she’d lived for over fifty years, and it was hard to do. The house was pretty old and needed lots of repair and fixing it up for a rental didn’t seem feasible at the time. It was rough for her leaving it, and rough for me too because I grew up there and theres that feeling you’ll never be able to go home again even though I had my own house. Too many memories there, but at least we have those and pictures of the way things were then. New memories are made when you move, and I know you’ve made tons of great memories in your beautiful home where you are now.
A great big congratulations to Clydene for winning the give away, and a big Happy Birthday to Joe! I’m sure his party will be spectacular if you have anything to do with it so hope he has great day and fair weather. Keep cool, bye for now oxoxo

    • sbranch says:

Very hard to leave a house you’ve loved …but you know, you leave it with all that love still wafting around inside, hopefully the new owners turn out to be deserving. XOXO

  59. Mary Alice Peterson says:

Susan, I saw how many girlfriends had commented to win the Beatrix Potter book so when I saw one here in the Lake Country (as part of our England vacation) I snapped it up, but the highlight of the day was having lunch at one of the farms that Beatrix Potter had purchased and then left to the National Trust. Pure joy! Something I will always remember.

  60. wkucaralyne says:

Finally! Holly Oak. What an inspiration! Love you sooooo much!! and there’s TWITTER!! Please excuse me while I boo-hoo.

  61. Amy Lee from Salem says:

In so many of your blogs I find memories from my own life come tumbling back. Today you reminded me of someone very special who also could repair just about anything, my Grandfather. When I saw the photo of poor little Jemima’s neck the page of my memories just flipped. I think for me that your so personal blogs are what makes you so dear. Congrats to the new winner. Can’t wait to read about your Scotland plans and of course Happy birthday to Joe.

  62. pat addison (cave junction, OR) says:

good afternoon Susan, girlfriends. isn’t life grand??? it is here for us, we finally cooled down a little and we had a lovely surprise in the henhouse for us yesterday, Dominique, our Delaware hen, hatched out her first peep and its adorable as all little fuzzy chicks are. if its a hen we named it Angelique, if its a rooster… well I will be polling everyone for a good solid New England name for him. but for we are welcoming our latest little peep into the world, and most likely the last of the peeps for this peep season, summer is coming to an end and we have to hurry up and get this little one feathered before Fall. we are hearing the Katydids singing here, we hear the crickets and now the Katydids are mixing into the chorus. the tractors chug by a less often now, and the local blueberry, blackberry fields are picking and selling them… delicious!! good for blueberries and ice cream or blueberry cobbler topped with ice cream. and of course we can’t forget blackberry honey, the bees have been extra busy when the berries were flowering so the honey is going to be real good this year.. time for some good old fashioned bartering for some of that honey, tastes real good on waffles and pancakes during the Fall and Winter. and apple season will be starting soon enough, love going to the local orchards and getting fresh apples for apple butter, apple sauce and apple jelly. yep its canning time around here, time to restock the pantry shelves for Fall and winter. my best to Joe, I hope he has a wonderful birthday. time to go change the water around on the front gardens, you all have a great day today. congrats to the winner. hugs everyone…. 🙂

    • pat addison (cave junction, OR) says:

hmm maybe we should all be looking for warm kilts and sweaters to wear over there.. wonders if this add to the weight of the trunk, and no sheep smuggling in that trunk.. I haven’t forgotten that trip to England. LOL!!!!! do they wear warm stockings, or warm tights to keep their legs warm??? and before I forget we now have 2 new peeps in the world… adorable!!! hugs….. 😉

      • sbranch says:

Congratulations on the new Peeps! I think there might be some excellent shopping in Edinburgh. We’ll have to check it out!

        • pat addison (cave junction, OR) says:

thank you Susan, we now have 4 little peeps, 2 more hatched overnight and only about 4-8 more to go. hmmm Edinburgh, sounds like that would be a good place to get a nice warm kilt, or skirt and some warm sweaters. wonder if I could find a nice warm coat there as well?? could use a nice warm coat to keep the rain off or the snow.. does it snow in Scotland???

          • pat addison (cave junction, OR) says:

Charissa you had mentioned a brother in the last blog who raised chickens, well here is one simple way to really help keep the birds cool, buy a small wading pool about 4-5 ft. about the smallest one he can get and put that in the pen and keep it filled. the hens will love it for drinking, and wading to cool their feet and for dunking in their heads for cooling down. we have a large swimming pool for the ducks and a small wading pool for the chickens and they love it. also try to aim a couple of rainbird sprinklers at the pen and let it go for a bit, ours love that.

          • Charissa says:

PAT, Thank you for thinking of me. I told my brother about both of your suggestions. I know he tried the milk jugs already and they liked it xoxo

    • marty from New York City says:

      Hello Pat:
I love hearing about your life in Cave Junction. I am a New England Girl transported by mu precious husband many years ago with promises to “show me New York City”-and we have lived happily ever after here. I do miss New England and my suburban home where we raised chickens when I was growing up. Absolutely nothing compares with fresh eggs and tomatoes from a garden.
Getting back to possible names for a Rooster-How about “Yankee Doodle”, “Cromwell”(4 generations with that name in our family) or for that most popular Birthday Guy living in MV–“Joey” ?

  63. Pam says:

Thanks for telling us about Holly Oak’s post Susan life. Loved seeing the photos of it and of Spring Street. Your dining room is just gorgeous! I’ll be first in line for a copy of your “Home” book.

Congratulations to Clydene and Happy Birthday to Joe!

I just ordered a copy of The Fairy Tale Girl for my friend for her upcoming birthday. I know she will fall in love with you as the rest of us have.

  64. Patty in Michigan says:

When I finished the book, that was the question I had. I wonder who lives in Holly Oak. So thank you for the update and for letting us know. That is just getting sweetest little house! Happy Birthday to Joe!! Love to you and Joe and kitties!!

  65. Heather Carter Jackson says:

I’ve so enjoyed your trilogy of books and have scattered around to friends and family! Thank you for opening up your private life to provide hope and inspiration to others!

  66. Gloria Nugent says:

I tried leaving a message twice earlier but got back a post saying wrong email address??? Anyway I would live if you could acquire Holly Oak again so we could have an East coast gift shop💕

  67. DeLores Johnson says:

I HAVE TRIED TO LEAVE A MESSAGE 2 TIMES BUT IT NEVER SHOWS UP HERE. I AM WONDERING WHY?? I AM NEW TO YOUR BLOG AND LOVE IT. I ORDERED YOUR THREE TRILOGY BOOKS AND AM WAITING FOR THEM TO ARRIVE. I USE YOUR SCRAPBOOKING STICKERS AND I LOVE THEM TOO.

    DE LORES

    • sbranch says:

Let’s see if this goes through DeLores! I don’t know why you’re having trouble, but at least I can see this one. Welcome to the neighborhood!

      • DeLores Johnson says:

I got your reply! Must work now~

        DeLores

        • Vicki says:

I sometimes get the ‘comment awaiting moderation’ (I have one sitting here from 8/6) but I’m comment-heavy, having to curtail myself from jumping in too much with so many like minds here(!) and, gosh, already 500 or so replies to go through for Susan, which is a lot. Not complaining! Is great just to be able to have any contact and ‘hear’ what other readers/girlfriends from all over the world have to say along with ‘our’ Susan (is just the MOST fun exchange and I learn a lot!); what a great community!

  68. Sharrie says:

A Happy Birthday greeting to Joe! August babies are awesome!

Aw! New love! I love the pictures you posted of your Joe. My hubby is tall and wears cowboy boots. 🙂 It’s quite a good look. 😀

You were so lovely to the small band of gatherers at The British Emporium on your book tour. You and Joe had been on the hot and busy road before you arrived but you both were so gracious to the group that was gathered there from the moment you hit the ground. Thank you so much for your kindness.

I enjoyed hearing the update on Holly Oak. It’s hard to live alone but it does make you find out how to live and survive. I think it creates great skills that help make you a better person. I lived on my own straight out of college and worked and didn’t care for it much at all. I preferred the gatherings of my family and conversations and liveliness of a group. I survived though and made friends, decorated a terribly tiny house and eventually met my now husband through friends. We were such babies, right? Tiny steps.

I’m thinking if I win the lottery I could afford a house on Vineyard Haven. Oh my. It’s interesting the difference in homes through the years. But sometimes, when it’s 108 degrees outside, I think a trip north would be a Very Good Thing.

I’m so excited about your fall trip. There are several activities in the UK in September, your picnic being one of them, that make me want to go. But with two kids in college and things being kinda slim right now, it won’t happen this year. 🙂 The other activities are the Agatha Christie Festival in Torquay and Yarndale in North Yorkshire. Love a good festival.

I’m glad you’re back home for a respite. *Sigh* There’s no place like home.

    • sbranch says:

I just checked out Yarndale, oh my! SO my cup of tea, I hope we can make it. Thank you Sharrie!

  69. Suzanne says:

I too wondered what happened with Holly Oak – thanks for sharing. My new granddaughter, Tinley Louise, was born this August 5th; another (there have been so many) sweet connection with my blog friend. ♥

  70. Pamela Jo says:

I’m just about finished reading “Martha’s Vineyard Isle of Dreams” and I really hate for it too end! It’s a wonderful read and I’ve enjoyed every page! There were two things which really hit home with me…Your cat, Billy, who was named William T. and your dad’s favorite song “Tennessee Waltz.” My dad, Bill, was William Theodore, thus William T., who everyone called either Bill or Billy (no matter his age). I wrote in your previous blog that we just lost my dad. His favorite song was also “Tennessee Waltz” just as it was your dad’s favorite. Those things really brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for sharing so much of your life with us, Susan! You really are an inspiration!

    • sbranch says:

Thank you so much Pamela Jo… I’m so sorry for your loss… It’s such a sad sad thing. xoxo

  71. Connie Bahr says:

Your posts always lift my spirit! Thank you for dharing your life with all of us!

  72. sandy farrell says:

A friend introduced me to your wonderful Christmas cards a few years ago and since I have collected and read most of your books. A funny thing happened in our family. I have three aunts, Olive, Hazel and Chelsea last name Dean. Aunt Olive met a guy named Leslie Branch, married him and became Olive Branch.. Silly story to tell but I have always loved to tell it.
Now then, did you ever tell us how Jemina Duck broke her neck…an earthquake in California perhaps..or one of the 3 kittens meandering around like kittens do.
If you do any genealogy research, the archive in Edinburgh is absolutely wonderful. So helpful and efficient..Have a wonderful time.

    • sbranch says:

I love it. Olive Branch! Too cute! Jemima met her fate by my own neglectful hand. Just your basic knocking her into the sink!

  73. Elizabeth Woodford says:

I had the great delight of meeting you in Brewster on Beatrix Potter’s and my dear girlfriend Robin’s Birthday!! What a wonderful day we all had together crowned by listening to you speak and then meeting you! I want all to know that it is very possible to come across these wonderful Beatrix porcelain figures in thrift stores, antique shops and consignment shops! I happened upon Mr Tom Kitten in a consignment shop in Orleans MA, two days after Beatrix’s Birthday for the price of 12 $!!! Holey Moley!! It became Robin’s first Beatrix figurine and her Birthday present- Delightful Synchronicity!!

    • sbranch says:

Yes indeed, the hunt: a wonderful way to spend a day! Perfect Birthday gift anytime, but for that particular day especially!

I am thinking that one day…in the ‘very’ distant future, of course…you will end up back at Holly Oak with Joe, your kitties, and your beloved Dad (his deck, and all its beauty, lives on). You will have come full circle!!! In the meantime, I am simply in awe of where you live now. Thanks for sharing so much of your heart and soul with your readers. I, for one, am so grateful…Hugs…

  75. Anne Hegg says:

Possibly my favorite blog posting. I too had been wondering what had happened to Holly Oak.

  76. I love the way you fixed up Holly Oak. It is such a cute house. You are so artistic. You give me inspiration to fix up my house. Thank you.

  77. Nina says:

Hi Susan ! I’m so glad you are back home and safe & sound on the island with Joe, Jack & girl kitty. Jack is so pleased to have you back that he’s learned to speak! So cool! If I could be so bold…would you please video tape him for us if & when you get the time…I would love to see this little miracle. Speaking of things not to be missed~ Have you been watching the Great British Baking Show? It’s been on PBS in Georgia the last couple of weeks. Since you are such an Anglophile I thought for sure you would want to know. …Lastly, I think that a home book would be excellent but I would also love it if you would make some more Christmas ornaments..maybe glass balls with your decorated house on it? Just a thought. I think I am beginning to get addicted to the positivity of your world:) So lucky I found you. Hope I am not being too demanding. Lots of love and laughter, Nina

    • sbranch says:

I’ll keep that in mind Nina! My only problem, ever, is time! (Maybe not my only problem, but a big one!😜)

    Susan,
After reading your latest blog I knew Sunday was the day I would finally devote to Martha’s Vineyard Isle of Dreams. I’ve had it for two months waiting for the perfect day to read it. The weather is a Calif. postcard perfect day. I had hoped to see you in Danville but I was on the East Coast. I will be on Nantucket when you have your final book signing on MV before going on your trip. Once again I will miss you because the ferry back will be too early in the day and it is our 32nd anniv. I loved the book. So much so that I am up late tonight thinking about your courage and how lovely your life has turned out. Things truly do happen for a reason. Thank you for your wonderful books and how you have positively affected so many people because of them. Maybe we’ll see you around Spring Street if we take a day trip to MV while on our special Island adventure. Thanks again Susan!

  79. Mary W. Gough says:

    Hi, Susan,

I was just on Martha’s Vineyard, and from our tour coach, I peeked down every shady lane in hopes of catching a glimpse of your house; of course, I respect your privacy, but one can dream.
Your area is looovely (as the Irish say). I asked one of our tour guides if she knows you, and she said, “She is one of our own!”

Good Morning Susan, and what a wonderful photo journey of Holly Oak and and your current place. Isn’t it amazing how the years zip by and the memories just fill up a place and spill over? I often wondered if you ever wished to move back to your first little place that was the heart of so many changes and firsts for you. Not to mention hands on work done by sweet Blog Daddy for his girl. Maybe you could make the owner an offer she couldn’t turn down? You never know if she has been contemplating a possible change of location for personal reasons and might take a nudge from an exceptional offer to do so. I would figure you always have a 50% chance she will say YES! Pretty good odds for a shot in the dark! LOL!!

I am in ***LOVE*** with your vintage stove! It is perfect and such a treasure. What a perfect place to add some seasonal charm to greet you every morning and blow a kiss good-night every evening! I am assuming that where ever you move, the stove will follow?

P.S. It has been so hot and humid here all summer long here in Florida that I have already dug our your Autumn book and began planning ideas to start in September. If I wait until it gets cool, it will be time to put up the Christmas tree!!! LOL!!

  81. Heidi G says:

I spent most of my afternoon yesterday reading your book. I can tell we would be kindred spirits. I felt transported back in time to Holly Oak and laughed out loud many times. Your way of writing reaches my heart. If only I didn’t have to work today, I would have finished reading the book. It will be my lunch companion for sure.

  82. Kedra Sugg says:

THANK YOU! Isn’t it “funny” that while I check for your new post every morning, it arrived when I most “needed” it. I have been sad, lonely, homesick, “bored”(a word I have never allowed to be said ) and today is gloomy weather! BUT as usual you have perked me up! (and yesterday I gave my dear friend her birthday gift of a silver tea canister, the Beatrix Potter”walks” book and a bar of Eng. Lavender soap – so now she is perked up too, tho her mum(100 yrs. old) is not doing well.)

  83. Pamela Jewett says:

    Hi Susan,
We just returned from a trip to the East Coast and my first to Martha’s Vineyard. Just me and it seemed like 90,000 others! My oh my, there were a lot of people there. We would pick a day that the President arrives! Anyway, MV is lovely. The Tabernacle is a beautiful structure and the camp cottages a delight. I am sorry to miss Illumination Night, but another time! I enjoyed your post, as always, and look forward to the new Willard.
    xoxo Pam

Hi Susan! I loved Isle of Dreams and thanks for answering the question about Holly Oak!! I am so happy that it is still a haven for a lucky girl. The other question I had was how you met some of your island girlfriends???
Happy Birthday to Joe and happy travel planning!!
    xoxo Debbie

  85. Audrianne Hill says:

Thank you for taking us back to Holly Oak! What a delightful adventure.

  86. Dolores Tabor says:

Thank you so much for answering a question I had been afraid to ask! I fell in love with the little cottage that sheltered you and was afraid what had happened to it. I am glad it is being loved and cared for, but I do hope one day you can get it back one day. How fun it would be as a guest house for you. And it would be a wonderful give-a-way wouldn’t it, a weekend in Holly Oak! I would bring my paints and paper and hope some of the magic would fill me with inspiration!
I have enjoyed your books so much, more than anything I have read in a long time. I do so hope you have more ideas to put to paper with a pen and your paints.
    Thank you,
    Dolores Tabor

I LOVE this post! I was wondering what happened to Holly Oak…? It is SUCH a darling house…as is your current gorgeous home. Happy birthday to dear Joe! Enjoy the rest of summer. The geese are already starting to fly overhead here in Wisconsin…a sign that we are enjoying the final month of the season. And our neighborhood fox is beginning to put on some extra fur. Enjoy your day, Susan. Looking forward to hearing about Joe’s bday party and your upcoming journey! xoxo

  88. Jennifer Bonynge says:

Such a charmed life…I enjoy all that you share and try to keep spirits high (Keep on truck’in we Oregonians say!) when challenges arise. Joe is CUTE! I am glad that you two found each other and feel free to let us into your lives. ;0)

  89. So I get to church yesterday and immediately the picture of 4 ADORABLE baby lambs is projected behind the altar and I couldn’t stop thinking how much you would have loved the picture and how they look like the ones you painted and you’d want to paint these 4 cute baby faces looming large on the screen. Hmmmmm I suspect I spent more time thinking about you then what I was supposed to be thinking about hahaha. 🙂 And Happy Birthday to the adorable JOE!!! XXO

Good Morning and happy almost fall from Denver. Loved your latest posting and enjoyed the conclusion of what happened to Holly Oak. It is always happy/sad to revisit homes in our lives. I have window boxes that my Dad made years ago and although they are falling apart, it is hard to part with them.

Hope you have marvelous weather in Scotland, but I would recommend a MacIntosh and mud boots with your love of walking.

Looking forward to the next Willard.

  91. Darylene from South Dakota says:

Finding out what happened to Holly Oak is like putting in the final pieces to a jigsaw puzzle. So satisfying! Great story – I think it is one of your best blogs yet. I printing it out right now so I can keep it with my Martha Vineyard Isle of Dreams book. Also, just wanted to say that although it is not my nature, you make me want to “choose the sunny side”. You inspire me, and I’m grateful. Thank you.

You touch my heart, you and your Joe, your precious pets, and you’re warm and cozy home. I would love to meet you someday and pray God’s continued blessings, love, laughter, and good health to enjoy all the days of your lives. Thank you for sharing! Maggie in Illinois

I just have to say…in my almost 60 yrs, I have read of and heard of “a twinkle” in his/her eye. I’ve seen it depicted in childrens stories, cartoons, etc. but, I have NEVER actually seen it myself. Until now. That one picture of you & Joe where he’s wearing the plaid shirt. Holy macaroni Batman! As soon as that pic came up in my scroll I saw it! He actually has a twinkle in his eye! I can’t tell yet if it’s love or the cat that ate the canary but this is the first time I’ve actually seen it on a person. And yes, very handsome!

  94. Tricia B. says:

    Susan,
What a wonderful post!! I want to move into Holly Oak this very minute!! Thank you for sharing your little cottage!! I adore it!! Although, I would move into your current home ASAP as well!! 🙂 I Love, Love, Love the charm that you created in both of the homes. My home is a work in progress as are most of the girlfriends I am sure. I am always changing and rearranging I love puttering about the house. 🙂

You know there are times the news or my job or some other crazy little thing distracts me or makes me sad and I forget about the things that really matter. ( Like my family, friends and home keeping, cooking, baking and gardening. ) So, I am so grateful for your posts on this lovely blog. I love the pictures and recipes and the simple reminder of what life is all about!!

Love to you and a big THANK YOU!!!! Love, Hugs and Prayers!! Tricia B.

Of course, your “newer” home is so beautiful & has certainly seen many happy celebrations & with many more to come. Happy Birthday to Joe! Hugs to you both & those darling kitties.

Dearest Susan, Did you ever read the charming children’s book by Julie Andrews (Yes! Julie Andrews !!) called Mandy? She hops the wall of her orphanage and finds an abandoned cottage in the woods and makes it her own!! Holly Oak reminds me of that! Fairy tale stuff! I had a fairy tale day made even better by sharing your blog over iced tea.
I forgot about our trip to England and Scotland! I am so happy to be one of the girl friends coming along this time!! Don’t forget when you get home to quick tape your meditations! It would be the best Christmas present EVER. I have so many beloveds I would give your meditations to, teenage daughters and friends, my Mom and sisters and of course a copy for my self! AND you have a very lovely voice! I love you very much. You are a bright light in the world, Caroline

PS Did you ever read The Unlikely Pilgrimage Of Harold Fry and The Love Song Of Miss Queen Hennessy I gave to you at RJ Julia? Did you love them?!! If they haven’t come to the top of your book pile yet, I wonder if they would be would be magical reading for the trip… Oh how honored they would be to go:)

    • Caroline says:

PPS! If you and Joe have to pass through Glastonbury, CT on your way to catch the Queen Mary, my husband and I would love to have you both over for breakfast, lunch, dinner or tea! We have a little pond house down on our pond that is pure magic. You two are invited any time!!! Love, Caroline

      • sbranch says:

You are so sweet! Something tells me, knowing us, we will be racing to catch the boat on time! But I’ll remember, just in cases!

    • sbranch says:

Yes, we’ll have so much fun! I’m very excited, googling EVERYTHING these days. I read the Unlikely Pilgrimage and did love it! Sweet! … I started Miss Queen … I forget where I am right now … he’s coming and she’s trying to wait, I think. Wonderful books, thank you!

      • Caroline says:

You wonderful people have a open standing invitation! What a nice and kind response to a besotted fan:) Now you have everyone in the World wanting to be your friend or better yet! your sister:) You would love the magic of the place… my husband and I feel like we were able to build our own fort! This morning (and every morning) I have my tea down there and write pages and pages of blessings in my journal:) A hummingbird came to the feeder and a great blue heron jumped up onto the end of our dock and was illuminated by golden sunrise. All this with hawks soaring and calling over the water and the blooming lilly pads. Our grown children still say we live in a snow globe of Monet’s garden 🙂 Blessings and Love for your day, Joe’s party, and your trip! Caroline

    Dear Susan,
A very Happy Birthday to Joe!!!
Thank you for sharing the wonderful pictures of Holly Oak and your lovely Spring Street home, so beautiful! A HOME book with decorating through the seasons would be so wonderful as other girlfriends have also said. I would be looking at it constantly.
I told my eye doctor all about A Fine Romance and she said she was falling in love already! I’ve lost count how many times I’ve read A Fine Romance and I just finished Isle of Dreams for a third time. My Dad is seriously ill and your blog and books brings me so much solace right now and that is priceless. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

  99. Teresa says:

Oh, what a wonderful post. After having read your book series twice, and loving it each time, I always wondered about that little house. I am so glad we know now. If you ever decide to include this post in a future printing of Isle, I would love for us to be able to get a printable or bookmark, or something, so we can have the whole story! I love the picture of you and Joe by the window, so beautiful and happy. Also, I am very much enjoying your new HOTH book and made that yummy cranberry cake last week–oh my, so great. I forgot to buy pecans, but the bottom, when flipped, turned into a delicious, crunchy brown sugar topping. It was fabulous and I can’t wait to try some of the other newer added recipes. So thankful for your little corner of the internet and for all that you do to brighten our days and lives!!!
