This SEPTEMBER SUNDAY will never come again . . .

So where were we? Oh yeah, paint. And curtains. Nesting. And, oh! It’s September! And Shirley Temple’s favorite, September Sunday . . . Who could ask for anything more? Not moi! MUSICA

 On days like these . . .

The light is changing . . . the late afternoon wall-sparkles are back, jumping and blowing all over the kitchen!

Diamond-bright light shimmering through the trees and onto my walls ~ nature gone wild in the best possible way, distributing beauty, free of charge . . .

The shimmers follow me all over the house, they sparkle across the bed, glimmer in the sink, even when I’m on the floor doing my exercises, the twinkling lights find me and I have to take advantage of the moment to wave hello to you!

It’s been going on for a while . . . the change that’s coming . . . the days are shortening …

And it’s getting more noticeable daily. I had to sweep leaves off the porch for the first time yesterday . . . they’re just beginning to flitter out of the trees . . . the air smells like fall, after a long hot wet summer, there’s a heavenly change in the air.  It is so easy to count my blessings . . . As forever and always, I am so grateful for these little things, as I am saying prayers for all our girlfriends, their families, homes, and their petty pets in the Carolinas being devastated by rising waters. The weather is so capricious, landing anywhere and everywhere, causing fires, floods, and storms, willy nilly, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be next, this little dot of an island sitting out in the Atlantic, but today, I’m especially blessed with the feeling of gratitude and appreciation for the kindness of so many rescuers and volunteers helping their neighbors. So much divides us these days, but in times of trouble, we turn to each other with no thought of religion, color, or politics, and it’s a beautiful thing to see. Just what we expect and know to be true about ourselves.

Oh yes, my heart is at home, and sunlight through the trees is not the only thing sparkling my walls . . . we have been very busy! I work on the new book early in the morning when it’s quiet, and the rest of the day, I work on the house!

I don’t know why, but I seem to do so much more cleaning in the fall than I do in the spring. I guess I’m just a born hunker-downer, is this true for you? I love everything about preparing for the cozy season. All my down comforters have gone to the big washers at the cleaners, all our pillows have been washed and dried on the line . . . I’m going through piles of linens now.

Washing tablecloths, napkins, dresser scarves, and curtains, mending, bleaching, starching, and ironing them into snowy clouds . . . this house has made it clear that it expects me to do this. It is not happy without its pretty old linens. It’s that kind of house. There are times I regret it, but we made a pact a long time ago ~ as the caretaker, I know what I have to do, there is a strong element of love involved.

And Jack, as always, helps! I am not alone.

I wrote last time that we were painting our dining room. I thought then, for a moment, I might paint the walls navy blue, which would have been gorgeous against the white trim, until I realized that during the winter the blue would turn black and I don’t want to live in a black house! And, the house, when it heard, actually, would not put up with it,  so we decided to paint the walls pink. Joe painted a little stripe and the dishes said YES!

We had to take down our old flowered wallpaper (there was a mold problem) which I knew I would miss so I started shopping for flowered curtain fabric! Old house says, give me flowers. I say, your wish is my command.

And, the cat . . .Mr. Adorable, helping Joe . . .

Jack blesses the work from the tops of ladders or draped over my clean sheers. How do kitties know which is very cleanest thing ~ the exact thing you are trying to keep clean and smooth? My art, he always tries to lay exactly on the page I’m painting!

Fabric swatch choices for the dining room were narrowed down to these three. I put this photo on Twitter and got lots of advice from our girlfriends! I went back and forth . . . believe it or not, they do sort of look alike, but it was a very difficult choice!

All of this frenzy of curtain activity is because every time we’ve gone to England, I’ve fallen more in love with the curtains …  those people understand curtains like no one does . . . they are everywhere, in every house we stay in, no matter how fancy or casual the house is ~ they are in all the hotels, and even in the pubs ~ Siobhan has a thick green velvet curtain charmingly hung over the inside of the door to her cottage to keep the chill out. I have promised myself for years, I’m going to go home and get me some of those. But I never do.

Look at them!  They’re real draperies (although they do call them curtains), heavy, thick, and lined . . . twice. With heavy flannel and then a backing to protect them from the light.

I really could give you dozens of pictures of curtains I’ve taken everywhere we stay, but I think you get the gist … well, okay, maybe one more . . .

This one was in a hotel room.  We only stayed there one night, just passing through on the Wales/England border, saw the hotel in a book and said, okay, let’s go there … and I have about twenty pictures of the curtains in our room, in the dining room, in the sitting room!

So here is the fabric we chose for our dining room ~ it was the less “structured” art of the three, more like watercolor I thought, and I love the touch of blue . . . we’re waiting for the fabric to arrive from England . . . I think they’ll be up by the time we come home from California at the end of October.

So we put the room back together . . . All I can do about the new curtains right now is dream . . . it’s

And here is our choice for the new curtains in our green living room! Yes, I’ve gone stark staring curtain-mad. MAS MUSICA?

Here’s the “before” photo for the living room . . . I probably bought those green curtains at Target maybe fifteen years ago … they’re old and have little rips and it’s time to say goodbye. BUT, we get to keep a bit of their essence: they had a very nice trim on them which we took off to use on the new curtains.

And there it is! This is my talented curtain-making girlfriend Jessica . . . she does this for a living ~ she’s a good friend of my neighbor Lowely which is how we met. So of course, here she is, doing the first installation of the first valance (Rachel says, in England they call this piece a “pelmet”)… I am taking pictures and saying eeeek! I love it!

Here’s a better look at the little trim we took from the other curtains . . . looks good!

She put them high above the windows, so we lose as little window-light as possible.

Jessica taught Joe how to install the rest of them . . . then she left.

Besides saving light, putting them up that high also visually raises the ceiling height (you can see when you look at the “before” photo).  Jessica’s now making the actual curtains which we should have by the end of the month. The house is rockin’ and rollin’ in flowers now!

She’s going to do the other end of the living room too . . . We’ll keep the lace curtains, but there will be matching long curtains on both sides of this alcove window.

And outside, at the same time, we’re painting the house!

All scraped and ready for paint, something about this I love, would be fun to leave for haunted-house look for Halloween! Under all the crunchy bits, Mrs. House of Creativity is smiling!

This side too. She’s an old house, built in 1849. We hadn’t been attending to things, and finally said, when we come home from England, we PROMISE to take care of you!!!  The last coat of paint is going on today, her gutters all got linseed yesterday, and when she’s done I’ll take photos and show you next time.

Jack watches the cans of paint and ladders go by… while I . . .

. . . make new stuff . . . I heard you, Girlfriends, and finally got busy and did the final designs for a few new pieces . . . Yes, the little Courage vase is done! 💞

And here is the back side . . . you can use it as a cream-for-one, too! It’s 1 5/8″ tall.

And there will be other things . . . two nightlights . . . (this is the back of one of the designs)

And two butter dishes, one plain, with just flowers and border, and the other has this quote from the movie of Little Women . . .

The Courage vase/pitcher will come in a set of three tiny vases . . . here’s vase #2 …

And this little round one is the tallest of the three, at 2 3/4 inches.

This is the back of the last one . . . there will be more too, a tea bag caddy, a kitty dish, a ring dish, a large vase, a heart ornament that hangs from a ribbon, and a pencil cup. We will get them in to the Studio right around January first!

And this? This is going to be my first stuffed doll, how appropriate that it will be Jack! I drew him in pencil, and he’s being made into this ⤵️ !

A soft little doll you can embroider and stuff, with his own little quilt, which has a bit of embroidery outline, but the letters are printed (which you can embroider or not). For a little one. They can put their baby to bed. Coming soon. Watch this space!

Before I put the dishes and glasses back in the dining room … I washed everything, wanting to do a good deep cleaning. AND while I was doing that, I finally went through the boxes of things I’ve bought over the years, as we travel, that I saved for you . . . to put up on our website in the Vintage section.

Such as these gorgeous, etched, vintage wine glasses . . .

It’s a set of six with an extra to break (always good to have an extra) … and when you toast with these very thin glasses, they ring like bells.

And this sweet little cream and covered sugar bowl. There’s lots more, including a couple of sets of dishes, I took pictures for Kellee . . . so watch our Vintage store over the holidays, Kellee will begin putting them up on Monday.

I also signed a contract to do the new 2020 calendars coming out this time next year . . . And there’s going to be a new addition! It will be mostly photography … a 12 x 12 wall calendar showing the beauty of the English Countryside. This is the cover . . .

And here’s a sample of the inside, the top-page for May 2020! I’m sure you know that our 2019 calendars are up and ready to go when you are!

So, when I finally got my dining room/gym back, I was lying on the floor doing my exercises . . . looked up, and there he was, head dangling over the side watching me. So adorable, I had to get UP, and go get the camera.

He just laid there waiting for me.

Being the most adorable. Ah, kitty love…

Remember this? It’s the soap dish I’ve had on my counter for probably 30 years. I found it in a kitchen shop and it’s been just the best thing ever. I’m not a person in love with pump-bottles of soap on my kitchen counter, so this more-natural looking thing makes me happy.

So just in cases you aren’t a pump-soap person either, I finally found the wood dishes for you . . . and then they stopped making them! And then they started again! Yay, so we just got them back in our web store . . .  with the perfect hand soap for next to your sink, a giftified set of soap and wood dish with sweet label to make a special little stocking stuffer/housewarming gift. The soaps are also available separately in sets of three.

Joe and I leave for California by train on October 3rd (three days of Twitter from the Twain, Boston to LA, follow us on Twitter for cross-country fun! You don’t have to join to look at the pictures and read). Part of what I’ve been doing is getting the house ready for fall . . . we get home four days before Halloween, we want to walk into AUTUMN! So I got out my Autumn Book to inspire me . . . 🍁

So the owls are on the window sill . . .

And the wreath is on the wall . . .

Reminding myself about decorating, getting out wooden candlesticks and bowls, planning my Halloween menu, Touchdown Chili and Corn Pudding and Gingerbread Cake with Lemon Sauce . . .

We bring home a bit of the woods on every walk . . .

Dried corn is on the door, and right before we go, once the house is good and dry, we’ll line our pumpkins on the little shelf over the front door.

We’re having luv-lee sunsets lately, the pink of this one attached itself to the spire,

Jack says bye-bye . . . stretching in the sunlight

Bye Bye to the picket fence garden . . .

Bye Bye to whatever this is, just a cute photo I felt like putting up!

Your cups are in the cooker . . .  never know exact date, coming all the way from England, getting through customs, but before end of October if all goes well!

Hope to see you at the Apple Farm in San Luis Obispo, CA on October 13th at 2 pm for a talk, book signing, and question answering! So excited! I believe it’s sold out, but they do have a waiting list. Yes! And for you hip east-coast girls,  don’t forget when we get home we’ll be at the West Falmouth Library on Cape Cod, MA for a talk and signing on November 10th at 1:30 pm.

My son helps me paint (in his own way). And I am writing like crazy, it’s like living in a conscious dream, being “there” all day and thinking how I can tell you the story in the best way. Joy of joys. I’m in the zone.

I leave you with a quote that was printed in Yankee Magazine in 2013 . . . Here comes that time of year when you can make a little world for you and your loved ones. Has to do with the smell of cooking foods they love, with fresh sheets on the bed and cozy jammies, having a little petty pet to love, and really and truly, it has everything to do with counting our many blessings.

Oh yes, and P.S., if you stuck with this long enough to get all the way to here, you should have a reward 🎉🎊, so here you go #1, the “movie” is still being thought about💃, and #2, you’re the first to know, the name of our new book is  . . .

  1. Bridget B. in Tn. says:

Thank-you, Susan. So happy to find a new blog today. Love all the new curtain fabric and the pink in the dining room. After you finish your book and get sufficient rest, please write about your first years with Joe . I just finished reading Isle of Dreams for the third time. Many of us want to hear about how you and Joe found your present house. You have given us little bits but we want more, please. Happy Fall! Thanks for the new blog and for pictures on twitter. Bridget

    • sbranch says:

I would LOVE to write that story Bridget! This house deserves its own book.

      • Katie says:

I completely agree with Bridget! I absolutely love Isle of Dreams, but my only complaint about it is that I’d love to read more about your early years in your lovely old sea captain’s home. Basically I want a bridge between Isle of Dreams and the beginning of your blog. I know “woman lives very happily in a house” doesn’t have quiet the same narrative pull as “woman finds her way,” but I find my favorite books are more about mood than story. You always set a lovely mood.

You’re one of my happiness gurus – I think you fill a similar role in my life as Gladys Taber and Beatrice Potter fill in yours. This may sound silly, but I’ve been holding off on buying A Fine Romance until I felt I really “needed it” – I’ve wanted to read it for a long time, but also know I’ll only be able to read it for the first time once. (I discovered your books after it was written, so didn’t read it when it initially came out.) The last month has posed some unexpected challenges for me, and suddenly I realized it’s time! I received my book in the mail today, and it’s already lifting my mood. Thank you for the lovely dose of comfort that you bring to your fans!

        • sbranch says:

Yes, I would call it, simply, Home. Because this house, beyond anything, is a person of its own. I hope you like A Fine Romance!

  2. Vicki South of Arroyo says:

When I read you, I feel like I can breathe again.

  3. Kellie Badger says:

    Susan,
Your home’s looking beautiful! Happy Fall!!

  4. Beverlee Moreno-Ring says:

Thank you for the fun fall feelings and inspiration. We still have full on summer here in San Diego, but we are getting little hints that fall is coming too. You really have to pay attention in So Cal as seasonal changes are often very subtle, like spiders and their webs, and the slightly cooler evening breeze. Love the title of your new book. Perfection!! And love that I have tickets to come see you in October and even stay for the weekend at Apple Farm. Feeling really grateful for that!! And oh yes..you have inspired me to start fall cleaning too.. or shamed me LOL.. Don’t think I have taken down my wine glasses on the top shelve to clean for like 5 years.. Think they are due. Been following you on twitter as well. Fun.. Thanks for all you do Susan. We need your joy, expressions of gratitude and inspiration more than ever.

  5. Sherry Winchester says:

Oh, Jack is such a Star!…and the name “Enchanted” couldn’t be more perfect! Once again, you’ve warmed the cockles of my heart. Thank you, Susan!

  7. Judy Garland/Martinez says:

Hello from Colorado! So happy to have this cheerful blog for my very own ( so to speak) to open and remind me this really is a beautiful world. Your blogs are a type of “level” for my brain !!! Thank you! Joyful September to you and yours! 🙂

  8. What a joy to read your new blog on a Lazy Sunday afternoon. I love your new decorating and the fabric that looks like water colors. Your living room will be wonderful and cheery on a winters day. Have a wonderful trip west and I look forward to seeing your journey. You are such a bright spot in my life, blessing to you, Joe and sweet Hack!

  9. Belle says:

Enjoyed! Do you ever go to the French country side? And to Paris.

  10. Bev Brewer says:

Dearest Susan and Joe—thank you for taking time to gift us with a new blog! With all your projects and upcoming trip, we appreciate it! Love everything about your beautiful home and how it is evolving as you redecorate. There was a picture of an old postcard placed in your diary on the last blog and I wondered what kind of building it was. Looked like someone kneeling in the foreground, but I could not read the sign on the front. Also, I loved the sweet children holding their Peter Rabbit pictures on Twitter! Very, very belated Happy Birthday wishes to the “Greatest Joe on Earth”! Love to you both from Bev Brewer

    • sbranch says:

Yes, that postcard was of a luv-lee old building in Wales, where we stopped just for a moment. I think it might be a skater in the foreground.

  11. Ellie E. says:

Love all the new decorating you are doing in your beautiful home. Adding new things to your house adds to the joy of living in it.

  12. linda matera says:

Susan—I just saw a pile of Pumpkins at the grocery store.Of course that got me into the Fall cleaning spirit..Yes i do clean more in the Fall

I do love this time of year & thank you for September Sunday.

Much quilting will be done soon too

Bunches of happy days to you!!!

  13. Susan says:

I just thought, yesterday, wonder where Susan Branch is? Haven’t heard from her lately. Hope I’m still on her list! And here you are!

  14. Penny Bohlen says:

Ah repute from all the suffering in the Carolinas! Here in the midwest our weather is just sparkling and my heart is so heavy for everyone victims of Florence. Your blog has saved me and so many others I believe. Thank you.

  15. Robin says:

And, given how photogenic and entertaining he clearly is, Jack deserves a spotlight too.

  16. Barbara says:

Thank you! Love the pink walls and curtain fabrics! Great job! Home making is so much fun and made much better with inspiration from you!
Have a wonderful trip and happy fall.

  17. Vicki says:

Lovely September is the time of year my hubby and I head over the mountains from Seattle to the little Bavarian town of Leavenworth. We buy fresh picked apples to be made into pies, sauces, muffins and your delicious apple crisp. (I add fresh chopped walnuts to the crisp topping, YUM!) Traveling in the fall is our favorite time to do so. Wishing you and Joe a wonderful trip to California. I’ll be coming along on twitter.

    • mary spring says:

..oh, Vicki !!.. don’t you just love that train ride from Seattle to that charming town of Leavenworth ??.. it’s just so magical !!.. we went last springtime.. I can only imagine how gorgeous it must be in the autumn !!..we are hoping to go again ; riding the train to Leavenworth this Christmas time when I am back on the west coast.. thank you for sharing your memory !!!

  18. Rhondi says:

How delightful to find a post from you today. We live in Charlotte NC where it’s been raining all day. Fortunately we haven’t lost power or have any trees down, but the woods behind our houses is flooded and looks like a river. I posted a picture on IG. Our house is quite a bit higher than the woods so we should be high and dry.
I love the pelmets. The English sure know how to do curtai

    • sbranch says:

Happy to hear you are safe. Let the water go away and the memories recede and all be well very soon for you and yours Rhondi!

  19. Linda Smith says:

Susan – Thank you for bringing light into my life. Your beautiful evolving home – your wonderful husband & your darling cat – all add up to joy. Thank you for the JOY. I really needed that today. Linda

  20. pat addison (cave junction, OR) says:

Good Afternoon Susan, Girlfriends. oh my you have been busy, well I have the house dusted, polished and swept up, the warm throws on the chairs and couch, and the Autumn decorations up. my cupboards are clean, the cups, saucers, glasses, dishes and silver all cleaned up and shiny. put out my new stoneware crocks to hold my kitchen utensils ( wooden, spoons, spatulas, cooking forks and tongs, etc.) and my collection of stoneware is all cleaned and on display, I love my stoneware crocks and things…. found a good pottery and I order from them, been doing business with them for 25 years now. soon it will be Autumn and I almost ready, just have curtains to clean and wash and get rid of the smoke smell in them… ICK!!! have a pleasant trip back to California, just be careful as it seems to be exploding into fire constantly as are we these days… mostly careless homeless transients leave fires burning here. the weather is much cooler, the days are getting much shorter and the nights colder, I love this time of year and I have to get going, have a pot roast to get into the oven for some slow cooking, and potatoes peeled for mashed garlic potatoes…. YUM!!! have a wonderful day everyone, stay warm and comfy cozy and lets enjoy this lovely Fall weather. its almost here just 6 more days to go… I can’t wait. hugs….. 😀

  21. Sally says:

Who wouldnt a home on the island filled with florals. I would!!

  22. Stefanie says:

What a wonderful Sunday afternoon read!….just happened upon your new blog…(actually saw that you had posted it on Twitter!)…Don’t you just LOVE “nesting”…getting all things in order for the change of seasons…which is fast arriving…I do not know where this year has gone…it has sped by with lightning speed…and all the while I am cleaning and putting out fall leaves and pumpkins, I am reminded how quickly all of it will be put away for Christmas!!!! Enjoy your time out west…Happy Trails to you and Joe!!!

  23. Sally says:

    Happy Fall

  24. Gill says:

Love the name of the new book! Perfect 😊 I am busy here too, getting ready for autumn because I am going to nurse my dear Pappa after he has a hip replacement operation. Leaving on the 4th and back just before Halloween, too. This summer I turned out the attic and finally found my dining room curtains that I packed away one spring over five years ago!! They were hidden in a suitcase, clearly marked “Curtains”😏 that had got pushed back to infinity and beyond! So I am having fun putting them back up too. There is something about a Sanderson Chintz that is very satisfying indeed. I am looking forwards to seeing your new curtains next month. Have a safe and lovely trip over to California.

  25. Donna Crouch says:

Have a wonderful train trip to California. Thank you for inspiring me to get ready for autumn. Love all the pictures of Jack, he is personality plus. “Enchanted”……..what a perfect title. xo

  26. Sherry says:

Oh Susan, thank you for such a cozy post (as usual). I am an Autumn cleaner too! Something about clean and cozying down for the winter I love and NEED.
Guess I am needing a little sympathy…we had to euthanize our sweet kitty Emma the other day. Hardest thing ever. We had her for 17 years and we miss her so.😢 I just wanted to give Jack a big squish and kiss when I saw his cuteness.
Love the pink dining room and new curtains! 🌸🌸🌸 So pretty! The dishes you are doing are luverly. I want all of them! Much love to you!😘

    • sbranch says:

I can imagine, how awful to lose your precious little pet. I’m so sorry Sheri. I hope you bring a new addition or two into your house very soon. xoxoxo

    • FayE in CA! says:

Hugs to your broken heart, Sherry. Emma was lucky to have her furless mama for 17 years. 💗💗💗

  27. Madison Johnson says:

I am so grateful to have discovered you and your books, Susan! You have changed my life with your art and writing, and it makes me so happy to have your blog posts as I wait for your next book. I just purchased your Autumn book and I am in love! <3

  28. Nancy Beardsley says:

Susan, September is my birth month and I, like you begin to get that fall/winter nesting bug. Here in Oregon, we have been fortunate not to have experienced the many extremes of fire and flood that so many have. Have MANY blessings to count!!

Your home and all the changes are lovely and how I enjoy seeing the care and love that you give your “caretaker” home that you have the joy of living in. Jack adds that special love that only a pet can do.

I do so enjoy all that you write and share with so many of us. You have added so much to the lives of many. Thank you. Nancy

  29. Linda P says:

Thank you Susan for this lovely post! I can’t wait for the butter dish. When I was a young girl and first read “little women” I loved the name Amy. I told my mom I thought it was the prettiest name and I wished she had named me Amy. She said “ well when you have a little girl of your own you can name her Amy “ and I did😊! So as soon as the butter dish is available I will buy it for my Amy! And I will “need” to buy those precious vases for myself. Thank you so very much for the joy you bring to my life! And I can’t wait for your new book!
    Linda

  30. Cathy says:

Lovely to see your fall items, it is still so hot here outside of Rochester, NY and I haven’t put up any of my fall decorations, only the wreath on my front door. Currently 83 degrees (real feel 89) and high humidity. I need cool fall breezes! Happy Fall anyway! 🍂🍁🍂

  31. Valerie Bassett says:

So very cozy. Thank you 💕 Jack has the most silky looking coat. He must smell cute too.

  32. Donna Wilson says:

I’m a fall-cleaner for sure, too! I love the first day of September, even though I live in Dallas. I’m still a Michigan girl at heart remembering new notebooks and pencils from the dime store 🙂 Except now I’m gathering pumpkins and mums for the house. We’ve had some 90 degree days, but I’m still washing the afghans and bringing out the Autumnal decor ~ husband is looking at me suspiciously….

Thank you for the updates, can’t wait to get a hold of the calendars!

    Love from Donna xxx

  33. Laura says:

Just when I needed something to bring a smile to my face your lovely email arrived!
What a gift! I was not only smiling but laughing seeing Jack accomplishing his most perfect antics!
Thank you for sharing your beautiful home and all your fabulous adventures.
    .
    Have a very happy day!

  34. I’m already Enchanted!! What a beautiful post💕 Your fabric choices for the curtains are lovely…they make the rooms look rich!! Like old world money✨✨✨
Are you ready for another trip or would you rather hunker down? You and Joe have been wonderful tour guides for all of us…I’ll be just as happy when you are in your slippers in front of the fireplace this winter! xoE&Kate

    • sbranch says:

I’d rather hunker down, because that would be doing what comes naturally! But then, I do get to go see my MOM, and many other wonderful people and things, so I’m excited and happy to go. Me too, it will be a quiet winter in front of the fire writing Enchanted and I look forward to every delicious second of it.

  35. Mary Revercomb says:

Love the name of the new book! Also looking forward to seeing your beautiful new paint job on your home when we visit the Vineyard in a week. We are in the the mist of having our home painted (actually stained as it is natural cedar siding and we live in the woods). Hopefully we might run into you as well during our 10 day stay. From one islander to another we love September!🍁🍂🔥📚

  36. Patti says:

Susan . .we have the same dining room wallpaper that you just took down in our dining room! I love your choice of pink for the walls. . .will look beautiful with your dishes. So happy the movie is still “alive”.

  37. Linda Pintarell says:

Your house just looks so “fresh”…like a breath of fresh air. Wish I could say in Southern California that we have seen a wisp of Fall…not yet. Still warm and summer-like. Soon, I hope. Looking forward to your twitter from the twain…as its on my list to take a train trip this coming year. Hope I can bring this dream to fruition. So looking forward to your new book…and someday, I hope, we will see the PANCAKE book of sometime ago. Breakfast is my favorite meal, and I love pancakes. Have a wonderful day!

  38. Patty says:

    Dear Susan,

We are looking forward to visiting Martha’s Vineyard the last week of September for the first time! I just love your pink dining room and this color will give you a spring time feeling all year long! I am heading to the porch now with a cup of cardamon cinnamon tea in my, “in love with nature cup” and ! I will read your autumn book in the glowing setting sun! Sending love from Maine.

Can’t wait for the new book! Always si inspiring to red your posts and see all your lovely photos. Thank you for sharing

  40. Deb in Wales says:

adore your curtains and pelmets! Doesn’t Joe make a great handyman too, with, of course, his handsome and willing assistant Jack! The fabrics you picked are just so stunning. I used to have a Welsh tapestry hung across my door too, as a draught excluder, but quickly learned that spiders like to make their home in the outward facing side. Gasps! Shrieks! Runs and hides!

Queen Victoria had been on the throne for twelve years when your home was built!

And we have the title! It’s positively charming and enchanting! Now it’s just waiting for Twitter fwom the Twain!

Oh, I could while away the hours watching the glittering shadows and shapes of bokeh. I love sunlight shimmering and glimmering through sparkling glass. It’s a lot of work, washing the glass to keep it pristine, but oh, so worth it.

    • sbranch says:

I know, Queen Victoria! Can you even imagine. I think about stuff like that all the time, this precious house I get to care for, has seen so much, has so many secrets, and I’m always listening! Yes, nothing like sparkling windows, eyes to the world, the seasons . . . xoxoxoxo

  41. Joanie B says:

Thank you so much for another uplifting blog post which is a reminder to me that I can make my home a place of love, family, friends, pets and beauty wherever and whatever I do uniquely, too. Just a few more weeks of the last of our San Diego summer/fall roller coaster pattern, then out come my squirrels, pumpkins, scarecrows and leaves, yea!!

  42. Kim says:

I feel such a fond affinity for you, Susan, and know that’s what we all share when we read your friendly and generous writing and see all your treasured photos and artwork. You bring about a warm communion of souls. I also deeply appreciate your twitter posts and re-tweets – There’s such a sense of like-minded understanding to be found there in these crazy days. Thank you! ❤️

    • sbranch says:

Thank you right back Kim. xoxo We do need each other!

    • Lana Bressler says:

what a sweet post, I feel the same way. I guess all of us “Girlfriends” do. I was just reading the comments and had to comment on yours…you said it all xo

  43. Valerie Blouch says:

Thanks so much for sharing tidbits of your life with us. I enjoy reading from a kindred spirit! Am so looking forward to Enchanted! Sign me up!! The second best thing to going to England is being able to go vicariously through you and Joe!! And getting to see snippets of Beatrix Potter’s home?!? Pure heaven! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! 💗

  44. I just LOVE everything you write. I savor it. I try hard not to finish it. I cannot wait to get back to it. You create a magical world, a one worth living in. Thank you so much.

  45. Hilary Mastropaul says:

Excellent name for the book! Love it!

  46. Susan Straub says:

Always love your pictures, quotes and nostalgic musings! Thank you.
I know you used to also post pictures of your other cat. Do you not have her anymore? Sorry, but I forget her name.

  47. Karen Cundiff says:

Happy Fall! Your new blog was an awesome surprise this afternoon as it continues to rain here in NC. Here in NW Piedmont, we have been blessed with only rain & moderate wind. No power outages or flooding! Prayers are needed for everyone in the Eastern part of the state.

All of your hard work has paid off, your home looks so lovely! I am now inspired to decorate my little home for Autumn. A great thing to do on a rainy day.

Have a wonderful train trip! Looking forward to seeing your view from the train. Godspeed!

  48. Kim Svahn says:

You will love your pink dining room! I painted ours a pale pink 14 years ago and still love it. It looks nice and bight during the day and has a wonderful glow in the evening, especially by candlelight. Your house is beautiful and so cozy.

  49. Carla Herkner says:

Each time your new blog entry lands in my inbox, I go, “Goody – Goody”! I love your paint colors and curtain fabrics. I have that same green in our family room and it is always cheerful and welcoming! I think you will love it, too. The change of seasons gives way to so many comforting memories. My parents always joined their friends in making apple butter in a huge copper kettle and they didn’t spare the oil of cloves one single bit! That is Fall to me. Thanks a bunch for this wonderful blog experience! ~Carla

  50. Debby says:

Hi Susan, the soap holder you are talking about sounds/looks like the cooling rack you had your pie crust on in a recent tweet. Is it the same thing? After days and days of over ninety degree weather, the rain we are getting today is so welcome. I adore autumn and everything it brings. Even the shorter days.🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂 Debby
Also wondering if Carrie is still postings her wanderings around Wales? I always looked forward to her writings.

  51. Debbie Boerger says:

Just what the doctor ordered, your new post!! Fall is for me the time to clean. Spring is time outside in the dirt. We have fresh veggies piled on the kitchen counter waiting to be cooked, mostly from friends who over planted. Had supper last night with some neighbors and a couple who are good friends. All went home with veggies. The ladies, Mary Beth and Brooke, are Master Gardeners. They and other MG folks got a large grant to put a watering system in the huge gardens they tend. This time of year they all have sore backs and fingers from harvesting. And it has to be done through rain, heat and clouds of mosquitoes. All goes to our local food banks and
kitchens. We are seeing Brooke and her lovely husband again tonight down in Winter Harbor at their fav pub.

I have a wooded slat soap holder, too. Always buy homemade soap. I inherited service for 12 China and crystal, that thin, etched ones in your picture. They rarely got used, they lived in the kitchen cabinets way up at tip top of the old kitchen. When we got settled in the little townhouse, Tom made China cabinets under what was once the top of a pass thru into the dining room from the kitchen. We put in lighting, and I painted inside a soft green. The China has florals and lots of pretty greenish details…and the gold trims. I get so much pleasure washing everything (very carefully) when we get back to Tampa.

Before we head South, we are having the clapboards sanded and painted with a solid stain. Took forever to decide on a color. Also our tree guy is coming to cut limbs and haul the debris away. We have a huge pile of chips from years past, which makes fab compost or the rhododendron…after it has rotted down to good, dark humous. (sp??) 20 yrs ago, we did all this ourselves. I put 2 coats of stain on all the boards, front and back, keeping just ahead of the carpenters. There is a time for everything, and that particular time has passed.

Have been silent on this blog for awhile. My lovely, sweet hubby has cancer. At first I was just staggering through chores, but now I have found my courage, and Tom has made the decisions for treating it. He had a terrifying “spell” that involved 6 hrs in the emergency room. Some sort of reaction to the biopsies, they said. Had all the symptoms of heart attack. And he had another thingy on his beautiful leg, which was cancer, not melanoma, but more needs to be removed. All this was in the space of about a week. Didn’t stop the guy from playing golf….in his very chic compression sock.

I look forward to your train trip on Twitter. At the last Hysterical Society program, other friends said they are taking the train out West.
Thank you yet again for keeping life real, in the home, with dear friends and family. We’ll get through this if we can cling to those beloved things. Even washing dishes seems like a blessing. I have dishes to wash, clean running water, and a home that does not leak. Oh how I wish everyone did………….

    Mucho love,
Debbie in Maine, which is just starting to display Fall colors.

    • sbranch says:

Doesn’t stop him from playing golf and isn’t that just about everything dear Debbie. All my love to you both, one amazing gift of a day at a time dear one. xoxoxo

    • Nina says:

      Dear Debbie,
You are one of the girlfriends for whose comments I always look. You were kind enough to respond to the musings of my aunt awhile back. I am so sorry to hear of your husband’s difficulties. Sometimes life seems to be filled with hurdle after hurdle. But it seems as if you are meeting the challenge with grace and courage. I hope you continue to be surrounded by the love and support of your friends.
      ~ Nina

      • Debbie Boerger says:

Thank you, Nina. Is you aunt still on Susan’s blog?

        • Nina says:

You are more than welcome Debbie. My comment and your response should still be there if that’s what you were asking. I think it was a response to Susan’s relatives visiting last summer. I rambled on about how wonderful Aunts really make an impression in our lives.

  52. Laura says:

Yesterday was my birthday 🎂 and my Gladys Taber newsletter arrived 🎁. Today it’s this lively September blog with you – delightfully distracted by the comforts of home as we ride out hurricane Florence in NC. You have truly taken us back to a time that feels safer in memories, music, thoughts. Not familiar with Shirley Temples September Sunday?? Was it a movie, a song, a quote? I love being born in September but April 12th would be great, too! Did you know April 12th is on the NC flag? My best friend from childhood was born April 12th, then there are Gladys Taber and you! I share birthdays with Agatha Christie 📚and Prince Henry 🤴 happy and safe travel to CA!

    • sbranch says:

Your birthday is my sister’s birthday too! LOVE my organized Virgo girlfriends despite (and because of) the ingrained insanity! Happy Birthday Laura! September Sunday was from a movie, made when she was quite young, her parents were divorced and they had a picnic Shirley loved, a tradition on a September Sunday. Can’t remember the name of the movie!

  53. Maryellen says:

I am ENCHANTED – Thank you so much for bringing happiness into my afternoon. Your photos and your writings are truly enchanting – and your “curtains” – YES!

  54. Karen Carpenter says:

What a happy day with your new blog entry. Love everything you are doing with curtains. I am in a quandry with my livingroom and dining room and you have inspired ,me to get busy. Can’t wait to see the finished ones at your house. Its still hot here and I am ready for Michigan fall.

Have fun on thr train. Thanks for making my day.

  55. Sue. Iller says:

Hello Susan, always such a pleasure to visit with you. I too have been starting to deep clean, even though the temps outside are very warm, autumn is coming😊. Love all of you home improvements. Have a safe and smile filled trip to CA

  56. Barbara Weaver says:

Your cleaning enthusiasm is catching! Did a bedspread and quilt last week and now, thanks to you, I’m eyeing the curtains. I was getting in the mood, and your blog cemented it. ;-D But first we’re getting new windows for the entire house, a much-needed improvement that we’ve been putting off for a while.

Trying to imagine how in the world you and Joe could run that house without Jack! Hope, obviously not possible! He’s SO helpful. Awaiting the twain twip and tweets from the same.

    Happy Fall!

  57. Regina Carretta says:

Susan….how loverly…..yes, the light changes, we can breathe the air, and in Seattle, we have rain, yes, rain……bought some mums and pansies today and my neighbor baked cheesey biscuits….thank you for welcoming autumn….and oh my I need to check out your vintage shop….hmmmm – what a good idea on your part!
Watched ” Guernsey : Potato Peel Pie Literary Society” = twice! And Greer Garson in “Random Harvest”…..hunkering down with dear friends, Maggie Mae the dog, planning next spring’s trip to England (we think Sussex, Kent – Sissinghurst and such places, with a few days in London)….thanks for continuing to be our ambassador of peace, art, color, community….we need you…
    love,
    Regina

  58. Chris Miller says:

    Hi Susan!
It’s always a glorious pleasure and sweet indulgence to sit down and go through your latest blog. Bless you for all that you share with us! It inspires me to have faith in life and hope in humanity! I love the title of your new book and simply can’t wait to read it, slowly and with great tenderness and appreciation!
Safe travels and I wish I lived closer to San Luis Obispo! (in Sacramento).
    Chris

  59. Dixie Johnson says:

Susan===What a COZYfeel this blog has! It’s still so hot here in theMemphis area that I can’tbegin to have the energy to tackle a project like new curtains, house cleaning, etc! But I wish I did! Can’t wait to read the new book—& to see the movie —just the thing for an indie film maker. Blessings to you, Joe, & Jack!

  60. Judith Hogan (Heartsdesire) says:

What a lovely blog post today. So many new things to see. Your new curtains will be gorgeous and I love the green colour in your living room. A green living room is always my favourite as it seems to reflect the green trees and shrubs outside. The dining room pink is also wonderful. With a house like yours, it seems there is so much to do, but it is all worthwhile and how fun is it to have the fabulous Jack to help you. Thanks for a great read, I’m going to get my Autumn book out now and spend the rest of the afternoon slowly going through it. BTW, love the title for the new book, it’s perfect.

  61. Mary S in Forest Grove, OR says:

What a joy to come home from church, ready to curl up for a Sunday afternoon nap, but first … this! I absolutely love your fabric choices for the curtains. I’m a girl who loves a lot of pattern in my life so I quilt and I also sew new pillows with alarming frequency. Since I have lived in this house (1 1/2 years) I have also changed out my curtains more than usual. I discovered that 102″ tablecloths are the perfect length … with one on each side. Those people at Home Goods must think I entertain huge amounts of guests at once. So … thank you for the joy you have brought to my life since I discovered your work while working at a gift shop in 1993-ish. Have a lovely trip. Have a lovely Autumn. Mary

  62. Kathi Thaden says:

    Dear Susan,

I’m in the Lake District tonight staying at Lindeth Howe, the home Beatrix Potter purchased for her mother in 1915, just 13 miles from Hill Top Farm. (And, some 3500 miles from my home in America’s heartland). We begin exploring tomorrow. So thankful for your blog and the opportunity to learn about this beautiful place. Thinking of you tonight!

  63. susan leary says:

Hooray, coming to Falmouth! Can’t wait.

  64. Sarah says:

I’ve been fluffing for fall here. We finally had a break in the heat, and much needed rain has soaked us for days. It put me in the “falling” mood, so out came my box of heirloom needlepoint pumpkins, my velvet pumpkins, and my little fallish pieces of art. I gathered up my wooden dough bowls, copper cachepots, and anything else that cought my eye with autumn in mind. I’m going to be ready for the first day of autumn! I even brought home a couple of pumpkins from the market. Probably not wise this early, as the heat is sure to return, and the squirrels love to munch on the pumpkins from time to time.
It is so lovely to read this post. You inspire me, Susan. I love the choice of fabrics, that charming “recycled” trim, and the new paint color. Oh to have freshly painted rooms and house. We need to do the same!
Have a splendid trip to CA. I leave for France end of the week, but will only be away for a short time this trip. Paris is “always a good idea”, even if it is just for a few days.
I’m excited about the new book. Now, I’m off to pull out my Susan Branch Autumn book for more inspiration. Safe travels……Hugs from Austin! ~ Sarah

  65. Joan says:

Perfect post for a perfect September Sunday! Thank you Susan! You remind us all about being grateful and mindful of all of our blessings. Blessings to you and Joe and Jack, and your loved ones.

I have been thinking about YOU!! so good to hear from you finally , I know you are very busy and of course keeping Joe busy with the “honey do “list hehe. I love how your home is coming with her up do, and the curtains are beautiful ! I for one have always loved curtains and wallpaper for that traditional cozy home.
Jack is a little ham for the camera, the pictures of him are funny, makes me giggle :).
Have safe travels to Ca. beep your horn as you go thru Indiana.
    xoxo

Happy Fall such a wonderful season.

  67. Jane Franks says:

Hi Susan! Love, Love, LOVE the pink walls!!! And the floral curtains. Have made/had many of them — oddly not in this house. . .yet!! But all of your choices are outstanding!! And. . .so glad you have the lavender soap back; and in packs of 3!! I’m going to get right on that!! I’ve have the wooden dish from years ago! Love it! Like you, much prefer to the pump bottles; and couldn’t find any lavender soap I like as well! The 2020 calendars are going to be wonderful, too. I just finished washing all the front windows and the back “wall” (inside and out) in the past 2 days! Whew!! (Our windows are 6′ x 6′ “blocks” with panes inserted between glass, so that helps! And they swing down and in to lay flat like a table to wash both sides from indoors, if all that makes sense) And deep cleaned the living room on Friday and kitchen yesterday. Fall seems to beckon me to cleaning more than spring, too. I think Spring is so busy getting the garden going, I can’t stop long enough to clean like this! Also, this year my pending foot surgery (Friday 9/21) is a great motivator!! Getting lots done before — then will sit, foot up and WRITE!!! while foot heals!! Thanks so much for all of this! Beauty is a great healer of the soul!! Love to you both! G & J xoxo

    • sbranch says:

Love your plans for the foot time … always good to “keep busy” even while healing. xoxoxo Beauty is the great healer. It’s everything.

  68. Lana Bressler says:

So true…I wrote Susan the same thing..I wanted to know more about the time she and Joe met and when did they buy their current home on Spring St. It would be a wonderful book. I too have read all three..three times…I told her and friends it’s like rereading a letter..so wonderful.

  69. Susan—-What a cozy feel this blog has! Wish I had your energy—-It is still so hot in the Memphis area. Usually my impatiens are still blooming until Thanksgiving! Blessings to you, Joe, & Jack!

  70. Kathy McGrew says:

    My dearest Susan
As always the blog was pure joy but this time I had almost no pictures! What a surprise. I wonder if anyone else had this experience? I had about fourteen pictures.
Have you ever thought about doing a book just of Jack pictures with cute captions? He already has a huge fan base. I always look for Jack somewhere in each blog. You guessed it two fifteen year old tabby sisters share their home with me. I wear cat fur with pride!

  71. Jo-Ann Leedle says:

Thank you Susan for your blog today. Such a lovely visit with you and your beautiful home. Enjoy a beautiful autumn! 🍂🍁🍂

  72. Nancy says:

I love the gentler autumn sun filtering through curtains and wood blinds in my kitchen this time of year as yours……just warms the heart by leading to nesting and cuddling up with cat and pup. Happy cleaning!!!

  73. Mary Ann in mid-Missouri says:

I felt a little jealous reading this post. It sounds like autumn has truly begun in your neck of the woods. Here in the midwest, mid-Missouri specifically, it’s still very hot and dry. We have extreme drought conditions and pray nonstop for some relief from it all. Hopefully, soon. As always, your blog post has made my day. I spent all afternoon polishing furniture and putting out my fall decorations, and just as I sat down for a rest I saw that you had a new post up. Yay! Perfect timing! Have a safe and happy trip to California!

  74. Kath Mattus says:

Oh, Susan, I do love your new curtains. How happy Mrs. House will be when she has been draped in the finery 🙂 !!
It is such a joy to see an update from you in my inbox, thank you for sharing with us.
Have a very blessed day ladies!
    Kath

  75. Charlotte Martin says:

Susan, I too would love to hear about you and Joe, how you met, and your first years together. I know that you haven’t finished the book you are working on yet, but perhaps as you work on it, you may get ideas for the one about you and Joe.
Your home is lovely, and your dining room is perfect to have a tea party in.
Give Jack and hug and a chin scratch for me. He is such a gorgeous cat.
    Happy Fall to you,
    Charlotte Martin

  76. Dixie says:

Wonderful post. Your house looks lovely. I love the uplifting curtain material.
Jack has personality, charisma and curiosity in spades. What a sweetie!

  77. Sherry says:

Beautiful, cozy, warm blog, Susan. Love the pink dining room and the curtains…!! Gorgeous!
I do Autumn cleaning too! I thought I was the only one! I’m in good company!
We had to euthanize our kitty, Emma a couple days ago. We are heartbroken. Seeing Jack I just want to squeeze and kiss him.
Much love to you my lovely girlfriend! 😘

  78. SueG says:

What a refreshing break for this busy day of life here in Wisconsin on a Sunday. So looking forward to fall but we haven’t yet broken out of summer its a balmy 80 and humid. I bought mums yesterday and will slowly begin transforming the outside and inside with fall treasures.
Now to check out the vintage page and order me a soap dish too. I love hard soap on the counter and have been looking for something for my kitchen. By the way I love your choices of curtains, how beautiful to be surrounded by flowers all year long! Have a wonderful trip west!

  79. Yolie says:

    Susan –

Your house looks wonderful! Your love for life is infectious. You have never lost child-like wonder. In these times where people are so jaded, you are a breath of fresh air.

Do you mind sharing your paint colors and fabric sources? You know that many of us want to be like you…:)

  80. Pat Harmon says:

Pink and green, so luv-lee. Can’t wait to read Enchanted! Have a wonderful trip west. We are going to AZ and Gr Canyon around the same time. Love autumn and your Autumn. 🍂💛🍁

All is well!! I just signed back in and voila pictures have appeared. I believe you used your magic touch.Thank you very much.

  82. Kathy Phenix says:

Thanks for another fabulous blog. I love the curtain choices and I think the pink in the dining room is just lovely.
The true rock star of the blog is Jack. What a camera hound (can I say hound when describing a cat?). He is precious and very photogenic. Give him a hug from me.

  83. deezie says:

    Hi Susan
I just love the name of your new book, how fun. Loved all of your photos, I always do. I also adore the color pink and it looks fabulous in your dining room. I Just painted my art room a pale pink.
I enjoyed this so much Susan
    have a great day
    deezie

  84. Dewena says:

Jack lying on the ladder top so nonchalantly is so adorable, what a handsome boy he is! I do love your photo captures of September light and shadows. It stops you in your tracks, doesn’t it? And 5 minutes later it’s gone. Your new curtain material for both rooms is so pretty and while the drama of blue walls in the dining room would be handsome, the pink will please you for many years to come. I am so glad a blog friend led me to you recently. I have started at the very beginning of your blog and am treating myself to a month or two at a time, wanting it to last a long time. Joys ahead!

  85. Samantha C. Brakefield says:

“Enchanted!” I can’t wait! Congrats on the title. Jack is just the cutest and I love all the pictures of him that you include in your blog. He’s precious. Also, I ADORE your etched wine glasses. Gorgeous! Enjoy all the “newness” you’re giving your house. She’s a beauty!

    Cheers,
    Samantha (Mt. Borah Lady) 🙂

  86. Kay Bennett says:

    Hi Susan,
You are truly inspirational with all you’re doing inside and outside your home. It is such a beautiful and warm, welcoming house, especially the way you decorate and care for it. Thank you for sharing with us your decision making journey. My daughter and I are looking forward to seeing you in SLO on October 13th. We will be staying at the wonderful Apple Farm for the weekend. It will be a 4 hour drive from Huntington Beach, but we’ll have so much fun to look forward to. See you then!

  87. Darlene Catuara says:

What a fun surprise to see your blog waiting for me like a present! I love your new curtains and your pink room! You picked the pattern I would have chosen! It looks dreamy! Your whole house is a dreamy place filled with fairy tale wonder. Enjoy California. For me it’s been way too hot of a summer in So Cal. I’m leaving for England in 2 weeks and I can’t wait to see some of the places you went to and enjoy some cooler weather!
Happy Fall. Can’t wait to take out my Fall book and decorate!

  88. Cynthia Avalos says:

  93. Susan Ste.Marie says:

Thank so much, for reminding me, that it is ok to relish in making our homes a cozy haven ….to nest “ to the ninth” I love the change of seasons, but the Fall is my favorite, with its slow transition of color and crisper air. I am also in the throws of cleaning, fluffing, rearranging….nesting. I love my English Cottage decor, and do not give in to the latest trends ( as a rule), loving my teapots, rose print pillows and checked curtains. Your blog is always a joy to read, and I look forward to your new book, “Enchanted”…. a perfect title! 💕

  94. How Delightful! There is something warm, cozy and content about Fall that I don’t feel in any other season You certainly have captured it here Susan! Love the name “Enchanted” for your new book! Will be waiting anxiously for it’s completion!

  95. Janet lagrange says:

I agree, I read your books over and over again, and would love to know how you found your lovely old house. I love everything you’ve done, and love flowered fabrics and curtains in all my rooms. Thank you for coming into our lives.

  96. Nicole Dube says:

Enchanted…what a wonderful name!! Knowing that a perfectly “red led letter day” is coming in the future…when your book will arrive in my mailbox, helps me through even the most miserable, BLACK, no letters-only bills days. Thank you for giving us something beautiful to look forward to! Anticipation AND Enchantment, who could ask for anything more! 😘

  97. Sharlene Piscitelli says:

It is impossible to not have a smile when looking at your wonderful art or reading your words in books, blogs, or newsletters. Thank you for that. Your home is filled with comfort and happiness and the dining room redo is beautiful- can’t wait to see the curtains installed. I was just wondering what is the pink paint color in the dining room and that lovely green in the living room?
    Happy Fall!

  98. We are ‘Enchanted’ with you dear Susan. You always help us feel better.
    love, GrannyAnnie

  99. Hi Sue,
Love, love, love it all! I don’t know where you get all that energy. Early fall and the breezes make me sleepy, always has.
Have fun in SLO and at the beautiful Apple Farm. We will miss it this year, so share all about it, please.
    Have a fun trip!
    Melin
    xoxo
