This SEPTEMBER SUNDAY will never come again . . .

So where were we? Oh yeah, paint. And curtains. Nesting. And, oh! It’s September! And Shirley Temple’s favorite, September Sunday . . . Who could ask for anything more? Not moi! MUSICA

 On days like these . . .

The light is changing . . . the late afternoon wall-sparkles are back, jumping and blowing all over the kitchen!

Diamond-bright light shimmering through the trees and onto my walls ~ nature gone wild in the best possible way, distributing beauty, free of charge . . .

The shimmers follow me all over the house, they sparkle across the bed, glimmer in the sink, even when I’m on the floor doing my exercises, the twinkling lights find me and I have to take advantage of the moment to wave hello to you!

It’s been going on for a while . . . the change that’s coming . . . the days are shortening …

And it’s getting more noticeable daily. I had to sweep leaves off the porch for the first time yesterday . . . they’re just beginning to flitter out of the trees . . . the air smells like fall, after a long hot wet summer, there’s a heavenly change in the air.  It is so easy to count my blessings . . . As forever and always, I am so grateful for these little things, as I am saying prayers for all our girlfriends, their families, homes, and their petty pets in the Carolinas being devastated by rising waters. The weather is so capricious, landing anywhere and everywhere, causing fires, floods, and storms, willy nilly, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be next, this little dot of an island sitting out in the Atlantic, but today, I’m especially blessed with the feeling of gratitude and appreciation for the kindness of so many rescuers and volunteers helping their neighbors. So much divides us these days, but in times of trouble, we turn to each other with no thought of religion, color, or politics, and it’s a beautiful thing to see. Just what we expect and know to be true about ourselves.

Oh yes, my heart is at home, and sunlight through the trees is not the only thing sparkling my walls . . . we have been very busy! I work on the new book early in the morning when it’s quiet, and the rest of the day, I work on the house!

I don’t know why, but I seem to do so much more cleaning in the fall than I do in the spring. I guess I’m just a born hunker-downer, is this true for you? I love everything about preparing for the cozy season. All my down comforters have gone to the big washers at the cleaners, all our pillows have been washed and dried on the line . . . I’m going through piles of linens now.

Washing tablecloths, napkins, dresser scarves, and curtains, mending, bleaching, starching, and ironing them into snowy clouds . . . this house has made it clear that it expects me to do this. It is not happy without its pretty old linens. It’s that kind of house. There are times I regret it, but we made a pact a long time ago ~ as the caretaker, I know what I have to do, there is a strong element of love involved.

And Jack, as always, helps! I am not alone.

I wrote last time that we were painting our dining room. I thought then, for a moment, I might paint the walls navy blue, which would have been gorgeous against the white trim, until I realized that during the winter the blue would turn black and I don’t want to live in a black house! And, the house, when it heard, actually, would not put up with it,  so we decided to paint the walls pink. Joe painted a little stripe and the dishes said YES!

We had to take down our old flowered wallpaper (there was a mold problem) which I knew I would miss so I started shopping for flowered curtain fabric! Old house says, give me flowers. I say, your wish is my command.

And, the cat . . .Mr. Adorable, helping Joe . . .

Jack blesses the work from the tops of ladders or draped over my clean sheers. How do kitties know which is very cleanest thing ~ the exact thing you are trying to keep clean and smooth? My art, he always tries to lay exactly on the page I’m painting!

Fabric swatch choices for the dining room were narrowed down to these three. I put this photo on Twitter and got lots of advice from our girlfriends! I went back and forth . . . believe it or not, they do sort of look alike, but it was a very difficult choice!

All of this frenzy of curtain activity is because every time we’ve gone to England, I’ve fallen more in love with the curtains …  those people understand curtains like no one does . . . they are everywhere, in every house we stay in, no matter how fancy or casual the house is ~ they are in all the hotels, and even in the pubs ~ Siobhan has a thick green velvet curtain charmingly hung over the inside of the door to her cottage to keep the chill out. I have promised myself for years, I’m going to go home and get me some of those. But I never do.

Look at them!  They’re real draperies (although they do call them curtains), heavy, thick, and lined . . . twice. With heavy flannel and then a backing to protect them from the light.

I really could give you dozens of pictures of curtains I’ve taken everywhere we stay, but I think you get the gist … well, okay, maybe one more . . .

This one was in a hotel room.  We only stayed there one night, just passing through on the Wales/England border, saw the hotel in a book and said, okay, let’s go there … and I have about twenty pictures of the curtains in our room, in the dining room, in the sitting room!

So here is the fabric we chose for our dining room ~ it was the less “structured” art of the three, more like watercolor I thought, and I love the touch of blue . . . we’re waiting for the fabric to arrive from England . . . I think they’ll be up by the time we come home from California at the end of October.

So we put the room back together . . . All I can do about the new curtains right now is dream . . . it’s

And here is our choice for the new curtains in our green living room! Yes, I’ve gone stark staring curtain-mad. MAS MUSICA?

Here’s the “before” photo for the living room . . . I probably bought those green curtains at Target maybe fifteen years ago … they’re old and have little rips and it’s time to say goodbye. BUT, we get to keep a bit of their essence: they had a very nice trim on them which we took off to use on the new curtains.

And there it is! This is my talented curtain-making girlfriend Jessica . . . she does this for a living ~ she’s a good friend of my neighbor Lowely which is how we met. So of course, here she is, doing the first installation of the first valance (Rachel says, in England they call this piece a “pelmet”)… I am taking pictures and saying eeeek! I love it!

Here’s a better look at the little trim we took from the other curtains . . . looks good!

She put them high above the windows, so we lose as little window-light as possible.

Jessica taught Joe how to install the rest of them . . . then she left.

Besides saving light, putting them up that high also visually raises the ceiling height (you can see when you look at the “before” photo).  Jessica’s now making the actual curtains which we should have by the end of the month. The house is rockin’ and rollin’ in flowers now!

She’s going to do the other end of the living room too . . . We’ll keep the lace curtains, but there will be matching long curtains on both sides of this alcove window.

And outside, at the same time, we’re painting the house!

All scraped and ready for paint, something about this I love, would be fun to leave for haunted-house look for Halloween! Under all the crunchy bits, Mrs. House of Creativity is smiling!

This side too. She’s an old house, built in 1849. We hadn’t been attending to things, and finally said, when we come home from England, we PROMISE to take care of you!!!  The last coat of paint is going on today, her gutters all got linseed yesterday, and when she’s done I’ll take photos and show you next time.

Jack watches the cans of paint and ladders go by… while I . . .

. . . make new stuff . . . I heard you, Girlfriends, and finally got busy and did the final designs for a few new pieces . . . Yes, the little Courage vase is done! 💞

And here is the back side . . . you can use it as a cream-for-one, too! It’s 1 5/8″ tall.

And there will be other things . . . two nightlights . . . (this is the back of one of the designs)

And two butter dishes, one plain, with just flowers and border, and the other has this quote from the movie of Little Women . . .

The Courage vase/pitcher will come in a set of three tiny vases . . . here’s vase #2 …

And this little round one is the tallest of the three, at 2 3/4 inches.

This is the back of the last one . . . there will be more too, a tea bag caddy, a kitty dish, a ring dish, a large vase, a heart ornament that hangs from a ribbon, and a pencil cup. We will get them in to the Studio right around January first!

And this? This is going to be my first stuffed doll, how appropriate that it will be Jack! I drew him in pencil, and he’s being made into this ⤵️ !

A soft little doll you can embroider and stuff, with his own little quilt, which has a bit of embroidery outline, but the letters are printed (which you can embroider or not). For a little one. They can put their baby to bed. Coming soon. Watch this space!

Before I put the dishes and glasses back in the dining room … I washed everything, wanting to do a good deep cleaning. AND while I was doing that, I finally went through the boxes of things I’ve bought over the years, as we travel, that I saved for you . . . to put up on our website in the Vintage section.

Such as these gorgeous, etched, vintage wine glasses . . .

It’s a set of six with an extra to break (always good to have an extra) … and when you toast with these very thin glasses, they ring like bells.

And this sweet little cream and covered sugar bowl. There’s lots more, including a couple of sets of dishes, I took pictures for Kellee . . . so watch our Vintage store over the holidays, Kellee will begin putting them up on Monday.

I also signed a contract to do the new 2020 calendars coming out this time next year . . . And there’s going to be a new addition! It will be mostly photography … a 12 x 12 wall calendar showing the beauty of the English Countryside. This is the cover . . .

And here’s a sample of the inside, the top-page for May 2020! I’m sure you know that our 2019 calendars are up and ready to go when you are!

So, when I finally got my dining room/gym back, I was lying on the floor doing my exercises . . . looked up, and there he was, head dangling over the side watching me. So adorable, I had to get UP, and go get the camera.

He just laid there waiting for me.

Being the most adorable. Ah, kitty love…

Remember this? It’s the soap dish I’ve had on my counter for probably 30 years. I found it in a kitchen shop and it’s been just the best thing ever. I’m not a person in love with pump-bottles of soap on my kitchen counter, so this more-natural looking thing makes me happy.

So just in cases you aren’t a pump-soap person either, I finally found the wood dishes for you . . . and then they stopped making them! And then they started again! Yay, so we just got them back in our web store . . .  with the perfect hand soap for next to your sink, a giftified set of soap and wood dish with sweet label to make a special little stocking stuffer/housewarming gift. The soaps are also available separately in sets of three.

Joe and I leave for California by train on October 3rd (three days of Twitter from the Twain, Boston to LA, follow us on Twitter for cross-country fun! You don’t have to join to look at the pictures and read). Part of what I’ve been doing is getting the house ready for fall . . . we get home four days before Halloween, we want to walk into AUTUMN! So I got out my Autumn Book to inspire me . . . 🍁

So the owls are on the window sill . . .

And the wreath is on the wall . . .

Reminding myself about decorating, getting out wooden candlesticks and bowls, planning my Halloween menu, Touchdown Chili and Corn Pudding and Gingerbread Cake with Lemon Sauce . . .

We bring home a bit of the woods on every walk . . .

Dried corn is on the door, and right before we go, once the house is good and dry, we’ll line our pumpkins on the little shelf over the front door.

We’re having luv-lee sunsets lately, the pink of this one attached itself to the spire,

Jack says bye-bye . . . stretching in the sunlight

Bye Bye to the picket fence garden . . .

Bye Bye to whatever this is, just a cute photo I felt like putting up!

Your cups are in the cooker . . .  never know exact date, coming all the way from England, getting through customs, but before end of October if all goes well!

Hope to see you at the Apple Farm in San Luis Obispo, CA on October 13th at 2 pm for a talk, book signing, and question answering! So excited! I believe it’s sold out, but they do have a waiting list. Yes! And for you hip east-coast girls,  don’t forget when we get home we’ll be at the West Falmouth Library on Cape Cod, MA for a talk and signing on November 10th at 1:30 pm.

My son helps me paint (in his own way). And I am writing like crazy, it’s like living in a conscious dream, being “there” all day and thinking how I can tell you the story in the best way. Joy of joys. I’m in the zone.

I leave you with a quote that was printed in Yankee Magazine in 2013 . . . Here comes that time of year when you can make a little world for you and your loved ones. Has to do with the smell of cooking foods they love, with fresh sheets on the bed and cozy jammies, having a little petty pet to love, and really and truly, it has everything to do with counting our many blessings.

Oh yes, and P.S., if you stuck with this long enough to get all the way to here, you should have a reward 🎉🎊, so here you go #1, the “movie” is still being thought about💃, and #2, you’re the first to know, the name of our new book is  . . .

  1. Julie Ratcliffe says:

I love the title for the new book. Waiting with bated breath for it’s release. My daughter has just painted the living room in her first home with her boyfriend the same beautiful pink as your dining room. My new 2019 calendar arrived last week. I’m not opening it yet, I’m savouring the anticipation. 🙂

  2. Marilyn Ghere says:

I want to get motivated to do something special for our house. Thanks for tons of inspiration !! Loved your choices for your home, and your fall decorations. I appreciate how enthusiastic you are about every single day and all the seasons. Hugs from an admirer from the other side of the country.

  3. Gloria J Cheney says:

Looks like you and Joe have been hard at work. The house looks great. September is the best month, well, maybe October, too. Thanks Susan.

  4. Katherine says:

Susan, I love everything you do from writing a new book that I’m sure I’ll read to new curtains and fall cleaning. You are truly an inspiration to me and I’m sure many others. I can sit at my house thinking what I would like to do, then read your post which encourages me to get moving on my own projects. You are a blessing to so many women Susan. Thank you.

  5. Amy Rubins says:

What a great way to spend my September Sunday, reading about you and your lovely family getting ready for fall. I did these very things last week! Thank you for sharing. Btw, it doesn’t feel like fall. It’s 91 degrees…in Minnesota today!

    • sbranch says:

I have to say 91 degrees is ridiculous in the middle of September in Minnesota! We shall report this to the weather police and have the whole thing arrested!

  6. Susan Havey says:

Love the pink walls, flowered drapes and especially your cheerful and reassuring words to all the girlfriends. You and your world are like a visual Disneyland to escape to when the world seems intolerable. Here’s to apples, pumpkins, colored leaves and the sweet smell of gingerbread.

  7. Mary Pat says:

Once again Susan, Thank you for making me smile.

  8. Margaret says:

I love reading your blog; so heartwarming and uplifting. To accomplish all you do and still think of and include us in your world is just so thoughtful and generous. Your inspiring life and art are one of life’s blessings. Thank you for sharing them.

  9. Joann says:

Thank you for taking time to make me and so many others happy😊

  10. Margie says:

The swatch on the right goes best with the pale coral walls I think. Love your splotches of light and shadows on the walls, I love the smell and taste of Fall. The New England church reminds me of my wedding in NH 54 years ago in the rain on Pembroke Street. I just loved the rain and my reception in a 200 year old house with candles burning in the end of August I am excited for your new book. These times are difficult and I always look forward to your books. I still have your stickers which I bring out for special people. We no longer live in West Falmouth, sorry I will miss you at the library. Have fun on your travels.

  11. Bonnie Blayney says:

Seems like we will be ‘raining’ our way into Autumn. Horse mint is taking over where grass should be. 🙂

  12. Tamara Scire says:

    Susan,
You always inspire me! In a home with five men (including my husband) sometimes I forget to be feminine, you always bring me back to who I am as a woman and remind me of the beauty I can bring to these men. Thank you for taking time to inspire us in the midst of all you have going on! Enjoy your train trip to Cali!

  13. Sherry Kennedy says:

Susan, I’m loving the new pink in the dining room with the gorgeous new drapes., Everything looks so beautiful and homey! You are inspiring me to pull out all of my fall décor and get busy. Also, I love the title of the new book Enchanted! Can’t wait for it to come out.
Thank you for the ray of sunshine that always comes from your blogs.
    Sherry

  14. Carolyn from Pittsburgh says:

Sweet girl. I Love the pink! I Love the florals. Your home is perfect. Doesn’t it feel like you just got home and you are off again? But you need to go out west and see everyone. Have a wonderful time.

  15. Patty K. Page says:

The pink walls look just right and I can’t wait to see the rooms finished with their flowered curtains!

  16. Janet O'Connor says:

Dear Susan, Thank you for this lovely visit. I love that title, “Enchanted” for your next book! I can’t wait!!!
    Janet

  17. Darlene says:

I hate fall – everything dying soon to be dead.

    • sbranch says:

Awwww … look at the colors, smell the wind, look forward to the sparkle of snow . . . also, Vitamin B3 is a huge help …

    • Leslie says:

Not dead Darlene. “Unless a seed falls to the ground…” it cannot grow into something new. We know that new day will come after the deep sleep of winter, so think Spring! … and rejoice! “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.”

    • FayE in CA! says:

Walking through fall leaves brings smiles! The crunching and kicking of leaves is a walk through memories of carefree childhood days. How about the memory of a raked lawn…leaves piled neatly until the kiddos run with determination and throw themselves into the pile…laughter ringing through open windows to reach mom and pull her to look out to see their delight…their toss of selves into the pile of seasonal change! (Is that too much of a Hollywood movie scene?)

Living brings about personal changes…as we grow into ourselves our likes and dislikes can shift. Everyone has their favorites and fall doesn’t have to be yours, but I hope that someday you can view it differently because there really are perks. One of the gifts from Fall is the release from the prison of heat/humidity. The first rustle of drying leaves tells us that a comforting chill will soon make our sticky selves more comfortable!!

I used to hate it when the petals of roses fell from the vase…now I like their effort to relax the table with their sense of “interior design.” I used to hate it when tissue paper wrinkled while wrapping a gift…now I PURPOSELY ball-up the tissue before wrapping because I LOVE the crinkled look! Who knew that some of my annoyances/dislikes would turn into positives as I grew older…I didn’t expect it.

Another perk to the dead of fall…naked branches make moon-viewing easier!

Susan, I LOVE the photo calendar project. I will definitely purchase it!
I would actually enjoy “coffee table” photo books by you…so many themes to choose from your vast photo library. The books would (WILL) be stunning. 😀

I am sorry that Mrs. Claus won’t make her cup debut this year…boo-hoo…I had the perfect place for her next to my SB Santa cup. Maybe next year? I am looking forward to getting out the fall cup. I already have acorns and a couple of wee squirrels to put together my SB cup display.

I am always amazed to see Joe so “stylishly” dressed while he does his MAJOR projects around your home!!!

Enchanted…the birth is nearing when a name has been chosen. Can’t wait to purchase the books. ✏️📘

My best to you as you continue to to live the life that you love. Long pets for Jack and thanks to Joe for making you two the perfect twosome!

      Safe train crossing to CA!

      💗💗💗

  18. Carole R says:

Whenever we were in England (or home as I like to call it) I always examined the curtains too! Want them all for my home. Waiting impatiently for your new book.

  19. Susan Hebert says:

Could you please clone Jack? He’s so adorable, and I’d like one of my own!

  20. Robyn Brown says:

Anti-ci-pay-ay-tion (sing it with me)!!! Can’t wait for that book! And the movie 🙂 I’m bursting with joy.

  21. Kathy Satteson says:

I love the pink paint and the floral curtains will be wonderful. I do my “deep” cleaning in the fall, too. It seems silly to do it in the spring when I’ll have windows open and street dust floating in, so once the windows are shut for the cooler weather I’m raring to get things cleaned and put just so to enjoy while enjoying my favorite season. I also have much more energy in the fall – once the heat leaves I come alive again. I feel like I hibernate in the summer rather than the winter. (I always was the “different” one, but that’s fine by me!) I love your blogs and books and can’t wait for the new book and I know I’ll be wanting the 2020 England calendar – right down my alley. I’m also very intrigued by the little vases/pitchers, not that I need any, but… Thanks for all you do Susan, it’s always a bright spot in my day when there’s a new blog. Safe travels! Oh, and I agree with Bridget, I would love to read more about you and Joe and finding the house.

  22. Sharon in Weymouth says:

I’m in the middle of putting up new curtains (in my new house) myself, still in the picking-out-the fabric stage, and your pretty new ones have inspired me ever so much; they are gorgeous! Thank you!
Love the title for your new book, and your upcoming dish designs are the sweetest things.
Thanks for a delightful, Jack-filled blog post. It was such fun to read, like taking a bubble bath but without the water. I hope to see you in the West Falmouth Library in November. By then you’ll have been to California and back! Happy Autumn!

  23. Karen Williams says:

You have made my day, dear Susan!
Have had a crummy old week, full of cold….kindly shared with me by my beloved husband!
But he has had the most dreadful time. He volunteers at a local park, cutting back trees, bushes and log splitting. Sadly he has lost part of his index finger 😢 so he has been a brave boy, trying to let it heal.
Am just off to bed as it’s ten thirty here in England, but what a joy to behold your blog; the fabrics, beautiful china, glasses to go on your website….your new pelmets!! Lurve them! Beautiful fabric, and the soft plush pink…ah bliss!

Lucky peeps in San Luis Obispo to meet you and Joe and get to hear you chat about everything…do hope you have the most wonderful time with the girlfriends over there and a great time away. Don’t be away from Jack for too long this time….he must miss you so much!

I did laugh at your house pictures – seeing her in a state of undress! 🏡 Poor her! But she will look stunningly beautiful once more and I can’t wait to see her fully dressed when you next blog! She’ll be fabulous inside and out bedecked with pumpkins – such fun!

‘Enchanted England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland’ sounds fabbie – we will all look forward to reading that!
All the very best and huge cuddles to you, Joe and kitty cuddles for Jack

Great blog Susan! I just can’t get enough of Jack! He is the cutest cat ever. Mr personality.

  25. Rose Ann Bacher-Giallombardo says:

    Happy Sunday Susan 🙂
This post is so lovely & your special gift to each of us.
I adored watching Shirley Temple’s old movies, but I don’t remember her enjoying September Sundays. Which movie was that from?
My “Red Letter Day” mug that I purchased here is my favorite coffee Mug!
Can’t wait to buy the little LIFE IS GOOD vase, so sweet.
Warm Fall Hugs, to you, Joe & your boy.

    • sbranch says:

It was an early one, she was little, it was the movie where her mommy and daddy (no one could say the words mommy and daddy better than Shirley) broke up and she was so sad and what she really missed were the September Sundays they used to spend together . . . I don’t remember the name of the movie, but those words caught my memory and I always think of it on beautiful Sundays in September!

      • kathiellen says:

The movie is called “Our Little Girl”. If you watch it have a hankie nearby.😢

      • Debby says:

Our Little Girl 1935 refers to May and September Saturday’s.

      • Rose Ann Bacher-Giallombardo says:

Thank you Susan, Kathiellen & Debby. I will try to find her movie: “Our Little Girl” from 1935 when she was wee.
I believe that our country needs another little Shirley Temple to ease all the pain, suffering, sadness & to bring everyone HOPE. If only your boy Jack could talk, what would he say to cheer us up? I think he would say: “Chin up, BE OPTIMISTIC” 🙂 One of Shirley’s uplifting songs.

  26. Pamela Burkham says:

How appropriate that your latest blog comes on a Sunday – a day of blessings. I know much thought was given to choice of curtains and believe it or not – this was my favorite. My heart is smiling. Your blog always comes at a time when I need to reflect on my many blessings and today is no different. Hugs and Blessings!

  27. Patricia Edde says:

First of all my thoughts and prayers go out to all who are suffering so much because of the storm and it’s still not over yet. May they all have as speedy a recovery as possible and may God bless them all and the dear animals who are also feeling the heartbreak of it all.
Oh Susan, it was so good to see a new post! I know that you have your own life and much to do in it and that I must practice patience while you live it, but is the very best thing to see what you are up to. You and Joe are such busy bees that it makes me want to also let my home know how much I love her – she with her pine furniture, wood floors, floral chairs and wallpaper, a soupcon of lace and the many treasures that I have accumulated over time. I love looking out of the back windows past the deck to the maple that I had planted this year and to all of the birds visiting the feeders and the deer who come later and finish off the seeds. I am looking forward with all my heart and soul to Fall but just yesterday it was 93 degrees in Decorah. With climate change, Fall doesn’t last as long here, but I cherish any and every bit of it that shows it’s lovely face, but back to YOUR beautiful home. Could you share the brand and name of the color you used in your dining room? I want to paint my entryway pink and yours is the exact color that will show it off. I moved to a small condo due to a bad knee and back but I continue to make it as cozy as possible. This winter may be Sam’s last and I want to spend the time holding him close and keeping him warm and safe. I know many people can’t understand loving an animal so much but they are always there to greet you and love you no matter how you look or what kind of mood you’re in. They’re a great big ball of unconditional love that fills our hearts and souls with so much joy. I can’t imagine a world without them (be they dog, cat, horse, goat, sheep, hedgehog, etc).
I am looking forward to the pictures of your home after all of you and Joe’s hard work and your new book whenever it comes out and hopefully a movie (fingers and toes crossed). Would you ever consider writing a teeny, tiny book, nee pamphlet giving the areas (and places to stay, visit and eat) that you have visited in Great Britain? I, and I suspect most of your girlfriends, are just plain old country girls who don’t want London so much as the dappled green, sheep filled areas. Just a thought since you don’t have that much to do, she said with a twinkle in her eye. Anyway, love you to pieces Susan and am so very grateful that you have chosen to share your life with us. Toodles.

    • sbranch says:

Love your words Patricia … I’ll be sure to include places to stay, visit and eat in the new book! There are lots of them!

    • Betsy Brunette says:

Patricia….your heartfelt words have touched me. We are in the sundown times with our two puggles who are 15 and 14 and I can’t help but wonder what life is going to be like when they are no longer a part of the daily routine and commotion.

Your comments about looking out back and appreciating all of the beauty in your backyard resonate with me too. I thank my parents for nurturing that in me but also thank God for his infinite creativity.

I’m sure that your condo will be a smaller, yet just as wonderful, as your house was. Sounds like you have the knack for making things very hospitable.

  28. Jane Alexander says:

I was just thinking yesterday that it is time for your blog! Then, here it is today. I admire you so much by all the ways you do so much. You blog delights me. I love your painted walls and flowered and lace curtains. Etc. Etc. Etc. But my home does have a lot of inspired touches from yours. I had a church coffee here for about 30 ladies, and they loved the way our home is cheerful and cozy. I am so thankful you help to inspire me! Have a lovely trip to California, and a grand Oct!

  29. Ann Woleben says:

What a wonderful surprise to find your post this afternoon! The chosen fabrics for the living room and dining room are beautiful and welcoming. Fall cleaning and decorating – most therapeutic! We are giving thanks here in Virginia as Hurricane Florence bypassed us and we are praying for those who were in its path – more devastation in our beautiful country. Many will not have the fun of preparing for the fall season. This is a time to share our bounty. Blessings to you and Joe as you travel to California~

  30. Patty in Redlands says:

    🌟ENCHANTED!🌟
    C’est magnifique!

And I love seeing your flowery fabrics, beautiful walls, sparkling glassware, autumn decor, and adorable kitty! Thanks for catching us up, Susan! Now I’m looking forward to Twitter on the Twain, my new SB cups, the new book, AND your movie!! You make life beautiful!

    🍁🍂❤️

  31. Alice Fornuto says:

I’d SO love to start decorating for autumn in earnest, but here in Rochester, NY we have temps in the high 80s — a good 15° above normal. I hate to wish my life away, but as fall is my favorite season, I sure would like it to feel like that around here!

  32. Karen Gaudiosi says:

Your curtains are going to be beautiful! I’ve been painting in my house too the bathroom is a pretty spring green color with pink on the shelf and counter top, my kitchen is a beautiful yellow always wanted a yellow kitchen it seems to bring the sun inside! Maybe it’s being true New Engladers that we cozy up our houses! Will you do another blog before Halloween?

  33. Conno says:

Susan, I returned home from a trip to England in the eighties with the same curtain dreams as yours, lol. We had some lovely ones made by Laura Ashley, remember her stores? They were so difficult to care for that after a trip to France, a few years later, we replaced them with easily washed lace curtains like those we had seen there. They remain in those two rooms today. I am older now, and at least I can take care of them easily by myself, a necessity as sadly, my husband has since passed away. But I guess I am just a curtain dreamer, as you also seem to be. I know you will love yours, as did I, ours.

  34. Pam Hutchinson says:

Enchanted is one of my favorite words! Leaving Friday to see my Grandchildren and I always
have word of the day for them. That will be the 1st word!
I will see you at The Apple Farm.

    Pam

  35. Trudy says:

Love the curtains you have chosen–they are looking like the ones we had in our bedroom at home. I have them still here in my home!
Have a save journey and enjoy your trip.
    Gretings,Trudy from the Netherlands

  36. Lisa G. says:

A quote from yourself! Is that a first? (and, why not?) About cats wanting to lay on the most important thing: Yes, they do! Our Sweetie always has to step on my little radio, which often is on its side on the bed; she jumps up and changes the station – at the moment when I’m waiting to hear what they’re going to say next.
Or, I go in my room and find she’s turned it on and is “listening” to the Red Sox game.
Too many things to comment about – the curtains will be beautiful; I love the green ones with the ball fringe! And your pink dining room looks great – I keep seeing pale pink rooms these days online – it’s a thing now.
I really admire your industry. I find the humidity keeps me from wanting to do fall cleaning, so I’m waiting for the Septembery air and the breezes. But it’s good to have a good example before you, so I’ll remind myself on my days off of how organized you are, and perhaps that will spur me on. 🙂

    • sbranch says:

I’m no good in humidity either Lisa, had to work around it . . . we’ve been getting some lovely days just lately! Making hay while sun shines!

  37. Marie (Williamsburg, Virginia) says:

~Sweet Susan~ you make me yearn for drapery once again. My mom was a drapery gal. So I did the same for years…until I went “cottage and simple.” LOVE your selections!

Thanks for this heartwarming post. Just what we need to read with so much going on in our world today.

Just put my “Autumn” book out yesterday morning. I’m Autumn-izing my house this week. Talk about a simple pleasure. 🙂

    Bliss!
    Marie

P.S. Jack, can you be any cuter?!

  38. Trudy says:

Love your new curtains –they are looking simalair to the ones we had in our bedroom at home. They are still with me in our home today!
Beautiful picture of Jack stretching and the ones watching you while you are doing your gym.
Have a save journey and enjoy your trip.
    Greetings, Trudy from Holland

  39. Hillaire Gallagher says:

    Susan,
    Happy Sunday…
You and Joe have made such a lovely home…..you are such a home body….love it!
Thanks for sharing your ideas …enjoyed the samples….too!
I agree with Bridget …the story of how you and Joe found this house would be great one ! I am so excited about the new one ….”Enchanted…”
Have a wonderful journey to California…you both are on the go so much…enjoy keep us posted
    Lots of love..
    Hillaire

  40. Mary says:

I see it too. The nights are getting longer but the days are ablaze with the approach of autumn. Bittersweet has begun popping it’s yellow casing and revealing bright orange pods. Sunflowers are still screaming with their golden color “look at me, look at me”. Sugar maples are hinting that fall is not far off. These are definitely blessings all around us to enjoy.
I love your home’s new makeover, inside and out. With your love, care, and work she will continue to be a beautiful “young” lady.
See you soon in West Falmouth
    Mary

  41. Sheila says:

  42. Sherrill Kerbaugh says:

Today’s blog is very inspiring … it has awakened that very special place in my heart for everything “Autumn”. Time to fall clean and make the house even cozier for those cooler months right around the corner.
Love your new decorating projects … lovely, soft colors.

  43. Hillaire says:

    Happy Days (Sunday)
    Susan,
Lovely choices for your home…love the pink and the floral curtain materials.
I agree with Bridget that the story of this house with you and Joe would be great….

  44. Dayna says:

Enchanted……it’s perfect. Can’t wait to get lost in its pages!

  45. Terry says:

    Hi Susan!

I love the name of the new book! I love the photos of Jack! He makes me smile. I love your flowered curtains! I didn’t vote on Twitter, but I would have voted for the one you chose. I love it because of the touches of blue too!

I just retired from 29 years of teaching, and I have a job with a children’s ebook company working from home. I am trying to settle into a new routine. It seems I keep changing it each week. I haven’t found my sweet spot yet. You are such an inspiration for loving every moment at “home sweet handmade home.” I am going to pull out my copy of your Autumn book and fill myself with inspiration. Thank you!

Have a wonderful trip to CA! My daughter lives there now. She’s in the San Francisco area. My husband and I hope to drive across country to visit her next spring. Fortunately she gets back to the east coast frequently.

    Enjoy your week!
    Terry

    • sbranch says:

Happy retirement Terry! I imagine it will take a little time to figure things out after 29 years! But you will . . . xoxoxo

  46. Kelly Houlton says:

Thank you for bringing us into your luv-lee home, Susan, and showing us how much work – a genuine labor of love! – you both put into it. (Jack as “Mr. Adorable” #1, Joe as Mr. Adorable #2, and you as Ms. Adorable!) I shared your last quote with my husband and told him that that was what your work is all about: peaceful quietude, coziness in all its forms, and genuine appreciation and sweetness. You calm my soul girlfriend 🙂

  47. audrey B says:

I just adore that tiny Jack Kitty doll with tiny quilt. I can hardly wait to get my hands on them. The house refreshing looks marvelous, you will enjoy your trip, but returning to a fresh and lovely home will be heavenly. Lucky you, a beautiful autumnal season awaits.

  48. Karen Bowerman says:

Lovely blog as usual. Love seeing all the little pretties in your home and pictures of Jack. Autumn is my favorite season and I am feeling the need to clean and nest as well.

  49. Deb Huch says:

Fall is a beautiful time of the year! My bucket list does contain traveling cross country on the train. Every time you make the trip reminds me of that. I love the updates you are making to your home. Very clean and fresh.

  50. Nonni says:

    Hi, Susan!
Gosh, I’ve only ever been some huge number like #756 or #1,376 or some number there abouts when I’ve plucked up the nerve to add my two-cents-worth, ha ha! I’m feeling darn special there’s only 5 comments so far ahead of me. Well anyway, here’s my two-cents-worth…are you ready? Are sure you want to say “Enchanted” and not “Enchanting”? Enchanted sounds a little like it once was. Enchanting sounds like it still is. An ‘ed’ is always past tense, right? Like I said…this is perhaps only worth two-cents. Love the curtain material in living room with the shade of green walls. Spot on! See ya, love ya, bye!
    P.S. Loved Jack’s good bye.

    • sbranch says:

I’m thinking, without saying it all, “Enchanted England.” That sounds right doesn’t it? As in England, Wales, Ireland, and Scotland are Enchanted. Which they are!

  51. Cindy B. says:

In the throes of Fall Housecleaning too! There is a sense of satisfaction that looking at a room and knowing that EVERY surface has felt your mop, dust cloth, polishing cloth, wet rag……well, it’s right up there with landing on the moon, taking a gold in the Olympics or maybe just being pleased with a job well done.

  52. Barbara Lyons says:

You have no idea how timely this blog post is. I’m not decorating for Fall this year as my husband and I are making a major move to the city to live closer to our daughter and her family. This move is bittersweet as we have lived here for more than 40 years, worked and made friends who feel like family. But the sweet, is so very sweet, as we will be so close to our daughter, her husband, and our adorable six year old granddaughter. I have only followed your blog for a couple of years so I am reading your other posts from the very beginning, and getting such a wonderful feel for how I want to make my new home cozy and welcoming and a place where we will create new very special memories. Thank you for doing this, sharing you, your thoughts and ideas about how to create a home with a sense of welcome. Today’s post reminds me of the Autumn decorations I’ll put up in a year in my new home, and to pull out linens, baskets, and cookbooks to create a haven in my new city. Thank you dear girlfriend. I’m glad you’re coming with me! 😉

    • sbranch says:

Hard to leave a loved place, but when you think the way you are thinking, it’s SO exciting to make a new place cozy with your favorite things! Plus family! It’s a win win! xoxoxo

  53. Tara Dollins says:

  54. Vickie J Getty says:

That kitty boy is such a sweetie. I would happily housesit for you in order to get to spend time with Jack! I have references!!!!!

If you don’t mind sharing – what color pink is that for your dining room? It is luv-e-lee!

Love the idea for the 2020 calendar. You take the best photos! Even when moving and through raindrops on the window of a vehicle!!

Happy September Susan, Joe and Jack. Safe travels in October.

    • sbranch says:

Oh I forgot to put up the paint color … it’s not a name, it’s a formula … I’ll try to remember to do it next time! Sorry, and thank you Vickie!

  55. Kristina says:

You have been nesting! I love, love, triple love the pink dining room walls! What a lovely backdrop for a dinner party. I found the first red leaf on our lawn today, on this 90 degree windy day! Our hay is drying so quickly in the field that it’s almost too dry. I look forward to your new calendars and Twitter from the Twain! Happy September!

  56. Lillian Olmstead says:

    Hi Sue,
Happy September the most beautiful time of the year, garden plenty, peaches and pears and apples and golden rod and wild asters everywhere and then Autumn leaves. You’ve said it all. Love your new curtains.
    Happy traveling,
    Lillian XOXOXO

  57. Brenda says:

I love the paint and fabric you have chosen…So soft and romantic! Hurricane Florence has worn our southern hospitality thin with her extended visit. I hope she doesn’t bring her leftovers up your way! After she leaves, hopefully we can enjoy the first hints of fall : ) (Sorry if this shows up twice, it didn’t seem to send the first time.)

  58. Shannon(Pennsylvania) says:

When I count my blessings, I count you twice!❤️❤️❤️

  63. Carolyn Rector from Ohio says:

Always love to hear from you in a new blog post. Your energy amazes me, must be all that walking. Have a great trip to California. I will follow you on twitter, and by the way I love the pink!

  64. What a beautiful post, and the end was as exciting as the beginning. Sometimes, I feel like your posts are a mini vintage Victoria magazine (vintage being Nancy Lindermeyer years) … filled with beautiful images current to the season, lovely artwork, beauty or decorating hints and tips, delicious recipes with photos to match, wonderful articles about faraway places and historical sites, and lovely quotes from great minds past and present. I always looked forward to the day of the month when Victoria would arrive because it was like greeting a friend… a true friend who “got” me… who knew the things I would like to see, to read, to ponder. And that is how I feel about you, Sue. You just seem to know what we need to read, see, and ponder… even when we can’t really articulate it. You begin by giving us beauty, fill the middle with all the things our eyes and minds are looking forward to (though we may not even know it) and finish with a beautifully wrapped bow (in this case, the news about movie and book!) just as those Victorias finished with a “Chimes” piece. Aren’t we the lucky ones to have you and to benefit from all the loveliness you share? Yes, yes we are.

  65. CarolK says:

Thank you, I needed that. Now I’m inspired to Fall clean the house and decorate for Fall and cross my fingers the cool weather is right around the corner. Jersey Hugs………..

  66. Patti Gill says:

Oh my gosh, I love the new book title. I want on the pre-order list!
Life is enchanting in and of itself! Can’t wait to see all the enchanteds you are going to give us from a special part of this world of ours!

  67. Karen Saunders says:

Your lucky Susan…..I don’t think my hubby would let me paint a pink room…maybe my studio!!! However….it looks absolutely lovely!!!!💜💜💜💜💜

  68. Georgette P says:

I discovered you in Amazon. I read all 3 of your books. Bought “A Fine Romance”, then took out the others from my regional library. Loved them. Like you I like everything English. Also love your blog. Can’t wait to read your next book. I’m a 75 year old widow with college age grandchildren. Love to garden (not at the moment as it is way too hot in north Florida), paint, read, feed the wild birds and play with my little dog. I have travel to Europe a few times, but have not been to England for years, so thru your book, I felt like I was there. Your life seems so idyllic. I wish you the best and can’t wait for your new book.

  69. Judy Garland/Martinez says:

  72. Susan Eyerman says:

Oh my, Susan. This is my first edition since signing up to receive them. I am totally amazed at the content and plan to savor each section. Very interested to know about you. Just a side note, we are planning a “Friends Forever” trip to Cape Cod very soon and hope to make a side trip to Martha’s Vineyard. I see we share in the love of many things, especially our homes. Thank you for this lovely place to rest and savor the seasons. It will take me many visits to see all your news. Blessings, Susan

  76. Anne Steirer says:

If I ever had to evacuate due to an emergency, Susan Branch cookbooks and my Susan Branch calendars that I use like a diary would be among the first things I’d pack. Also my Susan Branch books that I read and felt comforted by your words when I was so fatigued during cancer treatment. I am just fine now and I wish you safe travels on your CA trip. You are very special to me.

  77. Susie J says:

What a lovely read for a mid- September Sunday. I am doing lots of deep cleaning and painting, too, so it felt good to know I’m not alone. Cannot wait until Enchanted is done and available. And you reminded me to go down and get Autumn off the bookshelf for s good perusal this evening. Thank you for such loveliness, Susan. Reading your blog takes me away from the confusing and cacophonous place the world is just no – to a little piece/place of peace.

  78. Janice says:

If ever I feel it is a bad day, or hear a sad word – I will think of
Jack on top of that ladder with his precious Joe beside him. He is
such a remarkable, darling cat! I just love him to pieces.

Thank you Susan Branch for your precious words and stories.

  79. Jan Martin says:

  81. Diane Scharf says:

    I smell fall coming.

  82. Mary Fasold says:

Sending you a warm hello from Bird in Hand PA! My husband and I find ourselves drawn here at least twice a year. The Amish buggies clip- clop past the inn where we stay. This time of year the fields are turning brown, bales of hay abound and the pumpkin population is greater than the number of tourists ! It’s the perfect time to really soak in all the beauty of this special place. Hope you and Joe have had a chance to visit this part of PA ! Love all your house fixing choices….and do hope that Jack has lent a paw in all the work! Best to you and Joe as you settle in for the holidays and the cold winter ! Mary & your old friend…Polly Esther the cat!

  83. Marigold says:

What a lovely way to end a lovely day. The prayers for those suffering in the hurricane. The lights dancing on your walls. The Man cheerfully going about the needed/wanted redecorating which he knows will make The Woman of His Dreams so happy. The Cat supervising. The autumn goodies turning your home into an explosion of color. All the new products on their way to homes here, there, and everywhere. Excited to know that the movie is still under consideration. And the new book — a title! at last! Thank you, Susan, for being you and for blessing the world with your love and your talent.

  84. Carla says:

Susan: Where ever did you find the white house with the green(?) roof that sits upon a table in your living room? Love it, and all of your new decorating!

  85. Carla says:

Susan: Where ever did you find the white house with the green (?) roof that sits upon a table in your living room? I love it, and your new decorating.

  86. Lorraine Macholz says:

Almost Happy Fall! Such a pretty time of year! Love the change of seasons! Each one unique in its own way! I love Love LOVE the new curtains! Happy for you!!! Love the new title of the book, can’t wait to read it, along with shopping once the new items are available. Safe travels to SLO! Have a great time~! Again thanks for allowing us to step into your wonderful world! xoxo

  87. Dotty Reehling says:

I always read your blog slowly as I do not want it to end. I am that way with books I love. In fact stopped one once until her next came out. Thank you for being a blessing to all of us. Have a lovely adventure on the twain.

  88. Marigold says:

Doesn’t look like my first longer comment was received, so this shorter one will have to do.

So excited about the movie and the new book and all the new products you’ve been working on.

Love your beautiful heart, Susan. Thank you for sharing your life and times with us.

  89. Sue Ellen says:

Thank you for this delightful “love letter” sharing what you have been up to since your return chez toi. I too love your choices of paint colors, fabrics and the sweet new items you’ve designed. I am concerned that the pitcher with the words “Life is Good” might cause some problems as that phrase I thought was trademarked. Perhaps I am wrong but this is what I’m referring to: Life is Good®. Anyway, your designs both interior home and crafting products are spot on as usual.
I too am eager for the cool, crisp autumn weather to arrive – my favorite season. I have spent the past 4 weeks also cleaning but not in preparation for fall but due to an infestation of fleas brought by a dog sitting client who I cared for 17 days and the day after he left the fleas began to dine on me! This has been an immense task to rid my house of these prolific and irritating as one must daily vacuum the entire house as well as launder in hot water all the items they could access and spray insecticide both within the house on carpets/floors as well as myself and my son so we can stop being bitten. I am finally seeing a great decrease in the numbers of “tenets” that took up residence here and hope to send the last of them packing by the end of this month! Then I can focus on the normal fall cleaning and decorating!

Prayers of courage, strength and comfort to all affected by “Florence” and thanks to those who have helped the residents during this critical and devastating event.

Best wishes Susan to you and Joe on your upcoming train trip and may you have a blessed autumn season especially with your CA family and friends.

  90. Linda dolhay says:

Dear Susan, thanks so much for bringing such cheer and love in your blogs. It really is something to read and experience. #movie! Book, Enchanted! Thinking on Stevie knicks song. Then I’m hoping u have listened to Paul’s new album…..divine and a great way to start out this time of year. Thanks for helping push me, guide me , to make this a cozy fall for me and my sisters, the last of our family. Your husband s great and needs to be cloned, and I’m in love with Jack. Truly. Again, thanks for sharing you. Lin

  91. Becky Daugherty says:

Susan, I’ve just finished reading this post. Your post was the icing on a wonderful day for my husband and me. Today, September 16, is our 57th wedding anniversary. 57!!! years!
We have a delightful family for which we are eternally grateful.

And then I check my mail and there you are with your most wonderful home.
I, like you, love to change my home with the seasons. I confess I don’t do it as often as I did when I was younger. I love opening the boxes with all my favorite things that I’ve collected through our 57 years of marriage. My heart is full of delight as I remove the tissue paper and inspect them everyone.

I have my seasons mugs, my calendars for 2019 and now I wait, patiently, for your new book, Enchanted.

  92. Sue Ellen says:

Oops year forgot one more question!
I have long admired the attractive granite bird bath in your yard. Can you share where you acquired it from? It is so perfect for the birds as it appears to have a shallow depth for the water as well as the surface being anti-slip for them. I would think it can remain outdoors all year since it is such a thick slab of granite.
As a “birder” I’ve hunted for a similar bath as I provide “bathing” spots in my yard year round using heaters to keep the water defrosted.

    • sbranch says:

It was a gift from a guy who works with granite and a good friend of Joe’s, for his 40th birthday, and I know you “can’t take it with you” but if I could take anything (besides people and pets!) it would be that birdbath. Kindred spirits!

  93. Merci Schon says:

My, but you’ve been busy! And your Joe! Interesting, you say you clean in the Fall, I do also, probably because I get so excited about the Autumn and Winter months; beautiful colorful leaves, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and then the chill, snow and Christmas! What’s not to love! I love the pink you chose for your room and the curtains that will hang on the windows. Looking forward to the new little courage vases. As for all that’s going around us I truly believe we are still there for each other. This too (our present politics) shall pass, as the saying goes. Continue on dear girlfriend, stay happy, I definitely do, life is too short not to be happy!

  94. Barbara B. says:

    Susan dear,
I LOVE your blog, makes me smile and warms my heart EVERY TIME!
By the way, I have the same fabric that is on your new valances/”pelmet.” The ones Joe and Jessica installed. I bought them already made, they came in two different colors. Great quality, love them as well.
You are so sweet, I am happy to hear from your blog today, you made my day.
I have all your books and calendars etc … seem like I cannot get enough. 🙂
I have decorated for fall and enjoy looking forward to my favorite season.
Your music is always a wonderful choice, I love the old music.

  95. Judith Jackson says:

I love your pink walls, too. Thank you for the fall post, my favorite season in the mid south! Thank you for the sweetest pictures of Jack💕💕. I think you could sell notecards with his sweet pictures on them. I am so looking forward to Enchanted!! I spread word of your books to all my friends. Dreaming of a perfect Autumn!
    Love, Judith

  96. I am twiterpated with your Jack ♥

  97. Lauri from Virginia says:

I love the name of the new book!! I can’t wait to read it. Love, love, love the Jack stuffed doll and quilt 😍. As always, thanks for your lovely post.

  98. Linda G says:

Dear Susan, would you be able to share the name of your curtain shop in England? Every curtain I have purchased was from The Curtain Shop located in Stockbridge,MA. They finally closed the shop which broke my heart.
Your welcomed letter today has calmed my soul after waiting for Hurricane Florence to hit us in the Charleston S.C. Area. You have brought me inner peace. Thank you

    • sbranch says:

Broke my heart too … yes …Amazing site: CurtainsMadeSimple.co.uk I hope Florence lets you off easy. xoxoxo

  99. Maureen from Long Island says:

Oh, Susan, your dining room and living room will be to-die-for! Love the pink and the green and the floral draperies you’ve chosen! How delightful! In this era of farmhouse decor influence, I find your homey English country style refreshing and encouraging! You will find the Apple Farm Inn a little bit of heaven. I loved it. Have a great time!!!

    • sbranch says:

I’ve been before which is one reason I’m going back. Love it and love the people who run it! Thank you for your sweet words Maureen, happy day!

I just finished radiation treatments and my Doctor asked me what I was going to do now that I didn’t have to go to the hospital every day (for 30 days). I told him I was going to do my Fall cleaning and he gave me the same look my husband gave me. Nothing makes me happier than a clean house. It starts tomorrow!
